April Showers for Your Pages

A BIG WELCOME BACK to Krystal Hartley! I love Krystal's foundation of shabby and mixed media that can always be found in her collections! She does a great job of bringing in elements of other styles which create some beautifully eclectic kits. Her style is definitely "Krystal" and something I love to look at and create with. It was so fun to visit with Krystal and hear her share about her life in Texas, her history in digital scrapbooking and design, and how some of her products were inspired; including her contribution this month. You can listen below (on the site), Download here or Subscribe in iTunes and leave comments or ask questions on this show's post.

Let’s take a closer look at "April Showers" that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! Name
I'm a 42 y/o WAHM in Dallas, TX. My husband Michael and I are approaching 20 years of marriage, and we have an 18 y/o daughter in college and a 13 y/o son. We also have a cat who drives me up the wall when my daughter is away.

If I'm not buried in Photoshop, you can probably find me doing things with Michael. We like to play World of Warcraft, binge watch series on Netflix, or just hang out and chill.

Lately I've enjoyed creating unique covers for my Facebook pages. I pen a little abstract poetry and then work with colors and imagery to go with them. I'll even usually put up a coordinating profile photo for a bit. Of the three I shared, the first 2 were just me getting creative inspired purely by the words. The third was one I created using my There She Goes kit, a kit that was heavily inspired by my daughter leaving for college.

started
I started scrapbooking in 1996 when my daughter was an infant. I needed a way to organize all the memories, photos and "stuff" that didn't go in the baby book. I stumbled across scrapbooking through a church event. Even though I had not previously been a crafty person, I found out I was pretty good at it and eventually made a business out of it.

I didn't realize that I was already dabbling in digital scrapbooking in 2000 when I printed out clipart for my son's first album. It was a search for specific clipart in 2004 that brought me to my first digital scrapbook store, but I didn't really convert until a couple of years later. I really don't know how or why I started designing...I guess it just felt like the thing to do as I learned my software. It almost seems silly now, but I'm glad that I did. It was late summer 2007 when I learned that there were lots of stores and communities for digi scrappers, and I found a designer contest browsing forums. I won (yay!) and the rest is history. I landed my dream job at Sweet Shoppe Designs in the spring of 2009.

inspired
I'm inspired by lots of things. I might want to create a mood, play with certain colors, connect to song lyrics, or design something I specifically need to record my own story.

tools
Computer: I'm using MSi GT70 laptop. Windows 8 Intel i7 3630QM CPU @ 240 GHz 16 GB RAM 64-bit Operating System
Program: Photoshop CC Illustrator CC
Camera: I use my iPhone 5 for most everything. I have an old Nikon D70 but I rarely ever use it.
Anything Else: I have an Intuos 4 My scanner is Canon 8800F that I use to scan in all my mixed media work to make overlays, brushes, etc.
tipstricks
More and more we are using our smart phones to capture our memories. One of the newer photography apps that I just love is PicTapGo. And if you do absolutely nothing else to your photos, you will probably at the very least want to pull them into that app and use the Lights On or Brightside filters to lighten your pics. It makes such a huge difference!

And one other tip...if you aren't already doing this, make sure to select the appropriate resampling option when you resize your images in Photoshop. The newer versions of the software have built-in processors to sharpen when you shrink things and to preserve details and reduce noise when you enlarge them. So just double check to make sure you're getting the best results when you resize!

Right now I'm loving my Mixed Media Mashup line. I've release 10 packs so far. It was one of those ideas that just came to me...as I was trying to fall asleep. I actually jumped out of bed and got on my computer to make the first one right then. I think they are super versatile and are huge time savers for those already experienced with art journaling and are so easy to use for those who find abstract messes a bit of a challenge. I love that you can use the same template an infinite number of ways and it never looks the same.

I think this is a very "Krystal" sort of kit. It has vintage elements and little bit of ephemera; it has an art doll and other painty, stampy elements, and it has pretty florals and shabby textures. The colors are light and happy and gender neutral. Layouts by my creative team and other scrappers are so beautiful and continue to sell this kit.
