I am Fayette Terlouw and designed in the craft/tole painting industry for years under the name of Fayette Skinner. I recently met one of the ladies on my creative team, and she about died of shock when I told her this...she has all of my tole painting books, and didn't know that I was “that" Fayette :)
I live in a little town called Garland in Northern Utah (and when I say little...I mean it. I think we have a population of 2,000 here! I love it!) I have been married to a wonderful Dutch guy named Kees (pronounced “Case") for 12 years. We have two daughters, one son and six grandkids that we adore! My dad lives with Kees and I – he suffers from Parkinson's Disease and Macular Degeneration, so I have the opportunity to “give back" to him – a great way to thank him for being a fantastic Dad!
I graduated from Utah State University with a BS in Business Education. After working for several years, and having my second daughter, I decided that I wanted to stay home with my kids. So, I began doing crafts and selling them at boutiques & craft fairs. I soon turned to designing, which opened up a whole new world to me...literally! I've had the opportunity to travel around the world and teach scrapbooking and tole painting classes – my favorite trips were to China and Australia!
I LOVE digi scrapping – much easier to clean up from! I create all of my own Quick Pages – I love working with my kits before I release them...sometimes it leads to additional elements. It always gives me a good feel for the kit!
SUPPLIES: Blue Skies Kit.I have been a “doodler" all of my life. From volunteering for any art projects in school, to painting the windows in my parents’ home for the holidays…I’ve always dabbled in art. My love of art became less of a hobby and more of a career when I fell in love with tole painting. I began designing and publishing my original tole painting patterns in 1992 through Provo Craft. Even though my first love was painting, my move into the scrapbooking world was a natural one. My publisher invited several designers to produce a line of papers and stickers…that was in 1996. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to design more paper scrapping products than I can count! I've also designed porcelain and resin figurines, pewter designs, counted cross-stitch patterns, stamps, and clipart cd’s. I began “moving" into the digi world several years ago (although I really resisted designing on the computer – that didn't seem like “real art" to me at the time. (Ha! See my “Digital Diva Layout" ) My design partner, Annette Ward, and I decided to take the leap and make digi designing as The “Ettes" our full time pursuit. That was over two years ago and we haven't looked back (we do still design products for the paper scrapping industry occasionally)! It’s been exciting, and very fulfilling to make a living doing something that I love so much. Although I rarely design anything with a paint brush in my hand anymore, I still love the entire design process. I love working on the computer with the graphics programs, learning new things, and seeing just what interesting designs I can come up with. You may wonder why I design under the name “The Ettes". Well, here's the story: Several years ago, Annette and I worked with a great sales rep. He grew a bit weary of trying to keep our names straight, so he decided that he would simplify things for everyone and just call us the “Ettes". You know…AnnETTE and FayETTE…our names both end in “ETTE". It made sense to us…and well, it stuck. We’ve been designing under our adopted name ever since. We even call our designs “Dig-ETTE-al Kits" Cute, huh? I'm inspired by everything...my grandkids, nature, magazines, billboards...sometimes just seeing two or three unusal colors together can inspire me – just anything that triggers that creative side of my brain! COMPTUER: I use a Windows PC with 8 gb of ram PROGRAM: CS4 - Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. I create all of my hand-drawn elements in Illustrator and LOVE giving them “life" in Photoshop. CAMERA: Canon Rebel XT...love it!
ANYTHING ELSE: I do a TON of my drawing with my Wacom Intuos 3 Tablet. It was a bit hard to get used to, but now I couldn't design without it! I also use a scanner – I still love to doodle on paper. So, I scan my doodles and do it digi style! I'm going to tackle extractions one of these days....in my spare time!Save, SAVE.....and SAVE OFTEN! I can't shout this loud enough! Make it a habit. It's painful when you lose a project because your program crashes or the power goes out. Yes, I have learned the hard way. I only lost things a few dozen times before I finally learned – grin! It's been ages since I lost anything...it's finally a habit with me...knock on wood! It's so hard to pick a favorite..it's usually what I'm working on. But, I do have to say that I'm totally in love with my “Little Moments • Big Memories" designs...I went a bit crazy with those little stick kids, and built an add-on kit of just stick figures! Zoo Crew – my customers tend to love my goofy little creatures in this kit :) Here are some of my favorite products by Fayette: Here are some more inspirational layouts using Fayette’s products.
