IN THE DESIGNER’S STUDIO WITH CHELLE’S CREATIONS

ChellesCreations

I am so excited to have Chelle’s Creations in THE DIGI FILES this month! I had been watching her store for several months when she sent in an application. Chelle creates wonderful themed kits that are still versatile enough to have many scrapping uses (as you will see below). I really love the balance she has between doodles/drawn elements AND the real ones. Let’s take a closer look at Bug Catcher:

folder

Many of my team members have commented that the alpha in “Bug Catcher” is now one of their favorites! You can get the alpha and this entire kit as well as 6 other large contributions for only $5 in THE DIGI FILES. Each contribution has a minimum retail value alone of $5 and you get them ALL for that price! Take a look at the fun my team and I had using this kit:

I love using journaling elements and making my text look like I wrote right on the lines. In photoshop and photoshop elements you can adjust the spacing between the lines by adjusting the leading. It’s a little like single space or double space in word processing, only much more accurate.

First…I type my journaling in a text box with the same number of lines as my journaling element. Then with all the text highlighted, I experiment with the number in the “adjust the leading” box until the text sits exactly on the lines.

You can find a tutorial with screenshots on this here

I’ve been scrapping forever. In my first scrapbooking class I was taught to mat my photos with construction paper and attach them with rubber cement. LOL! Over the years I’ve filled 45 albums…but most are one copy for the family and one copy for each of my children. Yes, that was very time consuming with paper scrapping. About 7 years ago I became disillusioned with scrapping trends…it seemed to be more about putting a lot of “stuff” on the page than about the photos and the story. I didn’t scrap anything for two years. When I came back to scrapping a few years later, I did printed books with just pictures and story and a few basic papers and elements I’d created myself. Then two years ago I accidentally stumbled on ScrapMatters and found that I could BUY digital scrapbooking supplies. I was in heaven. But I still liked creating some of my own papers and elements. In 2009 I competed in ScrapMatters’ DesignStar competition and was offered a design position there.

inspirestocreate3

My photos are my main source of inspiration…I usually design kits that I need to scrap my own photos. But I see ideas everywhere…”check out the pattern on those shoes…that would make a great paper”. LOL!

toolbox3

I design on a MacBookPro with 4GB Ram. I design primarily with Photoshop CS4. I’m still learning to use my Adobe Illustrator CS4 and my Bamboo Fun Tablet. I use my Cannon CanoScan 880F to scan doodles, things to extract, and pre-digi photos. I’m still learning about using my Nikon D5000 in manual mode. LOL!

I always seem to like my most recent kit, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be “Sunny Side Up”

In The Designer’s Studio With Danielle of Something Blue Studios

Today will mark one of those bigger changes that will be happening this month.

After the results were in from our survey this fall and I saw the things you wanted to know about our contributors, “In the Designer’s Studio” was born.  It reminds me a bit of that show “Inside the Actor’s Studio” where an interviewer asks standard questions to Hollywood stars.  The questions below are the questions you said you wanted asked, along with a few other suggestions you had. 🙂 I hope you enjoy these new designer features! 🙂

I am so excited to have Danielle of Something Blue here with us this month!  Danielle is one of those designers that I remember from my early days in digital.  She has some great digital products and she is also the home of those very cool magnets you might have seen around!  I love that her designs are always unique and fresh and INSPIRING!

Here’s a closer look at Danielle’s contribution to THE DIGI FILES this month:

2DesignerTips&Tricks

There are a couple of tips on my blog, and here is  a Photoshop tip from my newsletter:

I learned this tip at Photoshop World and wanted to immediately kick myself for not knowing it sooner. So, you know how when you’re trying to use the Elliptical Marquee tool (or the rectangular one – but that’s easier) to select something, and it never ends up where you need it to be? So what do you do? If you’re like me, you start over, or you keep the selection and then use “transform selection” to tweak it. No more! Try this: While you’re dragging that marquee tool, hold down the space bar. Now you can move the selection AS YOU’RE SELECTING IT! Wahoo! Add the shift key to the mix and you’ve got perfect circles, wherever you want them. Hooray!

3HowItAllStarted copy

Mine is a long convoluted story, but basically I was a Photoshop lover who enjoyed making stuff to “decorate” my photos with before I printed them. I had never heard of digital scrapbooking. One day in summer 2004, a Google search led me to a post about a contest for a Memory Makers Digital Scrapbooking book, and the rules were that everything had to be computer generated. I said “I can do that!”, and so I made some papers and doodads and created a page to submit. It was accepted for the book, and I was hooked. Unfortunately I was only hooked on the contest/publication aspect of it all, and so all of my early pages are not really dear memories but just pages thrown together based on what I thought that particular contest or magazine was looking for. Doing all that led me to some great opportunities, but I don’t submit stuff anymore. I just design because I love it, and scrap if I feel like I have something real to say. And if there’s time. 🙂

4InspireToCreate copy

Everything I see. And magazines. I’m a magazine junkie. It’s a sickness.

5toolbox copy

I have a Dell PC, and I’m running whatever came before Vista. I have no idea how much ram, but I know it’s not nearly enough and we’re looking into another computer as I type. I’m lucky I even know what ram means. Ask me anything about Photoshop, but don’t ask me about a computer’s innards. No clue whatsoever.

I use Photoshop and Illustrator. Both CS3 right now. I don’t feel the need to upgrade to 4. I think I’ll wait for the next round.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT, and that’s good enough for me as I have no idea what I am doing and just shoot on automatic most of the time.

I could not, no way, no how, design without my Wacom Intuos tablet. How did I ever live without this thing?? And I so love my scanner – the CanoScan8800F.

I would have to say my Love Story kit. My most recent thing is almost always my favorite.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT – NANCIE ROWE JANITZ

Spotlight-Nancie

I am really excited to have Nancie, founder of ScrapArtist, here with us this month!  I’m not sure I will ever forget the day I was cruising through the freebie gallery at ScrapbookBytes and saw her work for the first time!  I loved it!  She was a new digital designer (for scrapbooking anyway), but I wanted MORE! Not long after that, I saw call for a new site that hadn’t even launched yet, ScrapArtist and realized the owner was also the owner of those freebies I loved.  I immediately sent in my application and was thrilled when I was chosen for the ScrapArtist team (she was the only designer there at the time).  Here is Nancie’s contributions to this month’s THE DIGI FILES:

question1

When I first started scrapbooking, I joined an Art Inspiration challenge at Two Peas in a Bucket. We used beautiful pieces of artwork from Art.com as our inspiration. After running back and forth to the scrapbook store to find supplies to do the challenges, I realized I could more quickly create my own “backgrounds” using Photoshop. I loved working with brushes and different colors and textures. From there, it was a natural progression to creating digital papers and elements.

question2

I started designing in 2004

question3

Mostly a designer – not much time to scrap lately!

question4

More than I want to think about! LOL! With running SA that is most of my time now unfortunately, so I don’t have much time to design for myself anymore or to scrap. I miss it!

question5

I think it is my Digital Distressing Kit. The reason is because scrappers can use it over and over, plus it includes a tutorial which I really enjoyed creating and hope to do more tutorials.

Sponsor Spotlight – Wild Dandelions

Spot Lit Wall

I first discovered Wild Dandelions (a.k.a. Meghan Mullens) when Digi Scrap Addicts was running their “So You Think You Can Design” contest.  There were a few designers from that contest that I wasn’t familiar with at the time, and I followed them through the contest (and downloaded).  I was so excited when I saw WILD DANDELIONS debut at Scrap Orchard!  Here’s a look at what Meghan contributed to THE DIGI FILES 10:

question1

Designing just seemed like a natural progression for me as a scrapper. I had ideas and teamed up with my friend Kristin and created a collab with her quite a few months before I ventured into taking designing seriously. When I became serious about designing I paired up my dear friend Tracey Howard under the name Wild Dandelions. We were taken on at Scrap Orchard in June of 09 and both continue to sell there under our individual names.

question2

Dabbling since mid 08 and seriously since early 09.

question3

Definitely both! I think I’m a scrapper first and foremost.

question4

Well I’m on the computer way more than I should be but I’m easily distracted 😉 I’d say about 20-25 hours on a busy week!

question5

Well, I love collabing on kits…just the whole process is fun to me. I love seeing other ideas based around the same theme and working with people I consider friends. I can’t choose a favorite product though..I have a few! Apple Blossom with Kristin Cronin-Barrow, 10 Things with Traci Reed, Wonky with Kami Leonard and Tracey Howard. I love them all!

question1 It is really quite simple. I am a traditional scrapper gone digital scrapper, who determined I could teach myself to design digital products.

question2 I have been designing for 2 ½ years, (wow did that go by fast).

question3

I am both a scrapper and designer. However, I find it difficult to balance scrapping with designing. Designing keeps me really busy and that I consider a huge blessing. I find now I have to schedule time to scrap. I grab the moments when I can.

question4

Ok this was a reality check! I am still trying to approximate this but I would guess somewhere between 20-24 hours. Give or take and some weeks it is more depending on what is going on for that month.

question5

Oh dear, that is a really hard question. Hmmm…I would probably have to say…..my Kaleidoscope Collection. I think it is because I am a color lover!
