Bella Gypsy Designs is Lena Gardner and Tabatha Reed. They are sisters and best friends, but for the last 11 years they’ve been business partners as well. Lena lives in Lexington, KY, and Tabatha lives in a small town 90 minutes away. Lena is married and has 3 kids, aged 16, 10, and 8. Tabatha is engaged and has 6 kids, aged 13, 12, 8, 5, 3, and 2. Aside from family cookouts and holiday engagements, they have 9 birthday parties to throw every year, so even without much effort, they get to see each other often!

I just loved this chapter in our design story. Tabatha and I were playing more with muted pastels and it was trendy without being too much, you know? I never want what we create to look dated. I created this layout in a matter of 20 minutes, and when the layouts create themselves, it’s a win.

SUPPLIES: Hello Sunshine by Bella Gypsy

Tabatha started designing before Lena did, but just barely–she had been scrapping for a few months and began tinkering and designing about 2 months before Bella Gypsy was born. She was still a brand new designer when Lena got interested as well and they worked together to create a brand for the both of them to love and create with. Lena learned to design by watching Tabatha, and it was actually a few months before she ever created her first layout.

Is it hokey to say Instagram? It’s my favorite social media platform, and it’s filled with beautiful things. When I open the app and see gorgeous landscapes, cute kids, and other photos, it makes me want to make kits to go with them!

Computer: Tab is working on a custom built desktop with a solid state HD plus a 2TB HD, 16 gigs of ram. Lena’s working on an HP desktop with a 1TBHD and 8 gigs of RAM.

Program: They both use Adobe Creative Cloud and design in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Camera: They have the same type of camera and primary lens–Canon Rebel T2 with 50 mm 1.4 lens, but Tabatha also uses a 35mm lens sometimes so she can catch her larger group of kids in the shot! Honestly though….iPhone most of the time for both of them.

Anything Else: Lena uses a Wacom Intuos tablet.

If you’re in a scrapping rut, pick up a glossy magazine! On anything. I get a ton of magazine subscriptions and when I’m feeling uninspired I flip through them. A graphic headline, gorgeous colors in a decorating spread, you name it. Something about the tactility meets creativity just does it for me.

I went on a bit of a food bender this year. For a bit I just did kits about food. Fries Before Guys, Sous Chef, and Ice Cream Dream. I was on a roll, and don’t even ask about the upcoming food kits I have planned.

Fries Before Guys is just so *us*. It’s a bit irreverent, a bit silly, and fun. And yes, oddly specific. But let’s face it–most of us have Happy Meal pics somewhere. I had a blast creating it. And the ketchup & mustard alphas took me forever so it was a labor of love.

This was one of our most popular bundles this year and you already know why. It’s silly, and funny, and relatable. Imperfect people unite! I remember seeing a pop of black in a painting while walking down the hall at the hospital of all places. I knew I had to create something like it soon. And then the meh-ness of the funk I had been in collided with the palette inspiration and the final product made me happy.
