The inspiration fort his artwork was the quote from Anaïs Nin, that I used on the layout. At the time when I made this collage, it was very applicable to me, I was going through some major changes in my life. I was also inspired by the amazing work of Luis Falero Ricardo. The girl that comes out of the flowers is from his painting ‘L’étolie perdue’.
The Blend Modes are my favourite Photoshop tools and I have used A LOT of them on this image. I did a lot of extractions as well and have used many textures.
This piece was turned into a in a step-by-step video tutorial for one of Sebastian Michaels Awake classes and it was featured in Somerset Digital Studio, the Spring 2016 edition. I’ve printed this on a canvas and it’s hanging in my living room.

started

I have always been very creative. As a child I was always drawing, painting, making things with paper, crocheting and knitting clothes for my dolls. However, at the age of 18 I was advised to go for an administrative & language education, because a graphic design education wouldn’t give me a decent job – so they said.
I did however take evening classes in graphic techniques (aquarelle, etching, linocut and more of that) for 4 years.
I discovered Photoshop in 2007 when I finally decided to go for that long lost dream and enroll for a graphic design course. Then I discovered the exciting world of digital scrapbooking in August 2011, while looking for images for my end assignments. I fell in love immediately. I guess that the idea of being a designer one day started there. My love for digital scrapbooking and my passion for Photoshop were the perfect combination.
One year later, in 2012, I applied for a designer position in two stores. I chose a small Dutch store to begin my journey as a designer but it didn’t turn out so well. I was feeling very insecure about being a designer and I guess I just wasn’t ready at the time. I still had so much to learn.
It was in the spring of 2015 that I really did get started, professionally. I started selling my goodies in an Etsy store from two fellow Belgians, and 6 months later I had two stores, and I went solo on Etsy. I’ve been selling at The Digichick since February of this year.

tools

Computer: I work on a HP computer and I have Windows 8.1. By the time you’ll read this, I’ll have upgraded to Windows 10, it is scheduled for this week. I worked on a Mac during my graphic design education but I just couldn’t get used to it.
I have 6 TB of space on my computer and a 8 GB RAM memory. My monitor is a rather small Packard Bell screen. It’s probably 6 years old already, I’d love to have a bigger screen someday.

Program: I work with the Creative Cloud and I use Photoshop nearly every day. Next to that I also use InDesign and Illustrator. I’m not very fond of Illustrator, it’s not as intuitive as Photoshop, but sometimes it does come in handy.
I also use the regular Microsoft programs like Outlook, Excel, Word and – every now and then – Powerpoint. And WordPress, for my site.

Camera: I’ve had my Nikon Coolpix P510 for three years now. I probably don’t use all the features that it has but I do play around with the settings when we’re on vacation. The Coolpix P510 has an amazing 42x zoom, a zoom that goes even wider than the standard lens in a DSLR.

Anything Else: No tablet… I do have a Huawei smartphone but I don’t often use it. I am sure that I’m a huge exception but I don’t see the point in using my mobile all the time. It is far too complicated for me as well LOL. I often have to ask my daughter for advice.

tipstricks

The Blend Modes are my favourite tools in Photoshop. There is no limit to what you can achieve with those. I usually go through of all them, I don’t always know what Blend Mode will give what result and I love surprises! Try it yourself! If the effect is too strong, try lowering the opacity or masking out certain areas where you don’t want the effect to be applied.

favorite

Picking one favourite product was not easy… but I have chosen ‘Things To Do In The Garden’ Collection because it was the first collection where I’ve actually started to make drawings for. A lot of those illustrations were added to the collection and some of them were used on the patterns and mixed media papers as well. I picked the colours from a fashion style sheet but tweaked them a bit.

popular

I have four stores and they all have a different target group. The most popular products are not the same in my stores. But looking at sales and numbers, I’d say that the Wonderland Collection is probably the most popular in general. This huge and artsy collection was inspired by the story of Alice In Wonderland but I’ve given this a very personal touch. Not the standard Alice colours, patterns with a little extra, a lot of paint and artsy things, touches of gold… Maybe that is why people like it so much. But the story of Alice is still very popular, although this story was written in 1865.
