Name

Hi! Iʻm Brook. My husband Aaron and I have 2 kids (Ben & Grace) and live in sunny South Florida. We home school and can often be found staring at bugs, exploring the local zoo, chilling at the beach and drawing together. We are an artsy-farty family. Loud, funny and honestly… a little weird. But we like it. We have a talkative budgie named Kevin and a Betta fish, Gilbert.

This past year hasnʻt been a good one for me when it comes to getting layouts done. I just never had the time to devote a single page to each memory we made. And pocket-style scrapping is not my cup of tea… so I designed some of the Pile Up templates to help me get all of my square Instagram photos scrapped! A few weeks ago I printed an album out and these layouts with stacks of photos are absolutely my favorites to look at! So many wonderful moments all piled up. 🙂

started

Aside from the embellished photo books I made as a child & teen, I officially started the hobby of scrapbooking with a trip to a local store that carried Basic Grey which led to an addiction and eventually a design team spot on a popular online paper scrapping kit club. As digital scrapbooking began to increase in popularity, I tinkered with it a bit using mostly freebies. Having worked in Graphic Design before having my kids, I knew Photoshop well and was thrilled to be using it again. It opened up my eyes to the possibilities of digi! I was hooked.

I took a brief hiatus from scrapbooking and when I came back I was 100% digi. I discovered the Sweet Shoppe and loved their designs. Over the years I became a SugarBabe and started realizing my potential to be a designer. Thankfully, Robin and the other designers at SSD believed in me and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime!

inspired

I am inspired by so much! I am in love with color, and lots of it. The outdoors inspires me… fresh air & sunshine. I also absorb vintage & modern children’s illustrations, artists like Mary Blair and Gyo Fujikawa, fabric and quilting patterns. I also adore classic stories like Alice and Wonderland, Heidi, the Jungle Book, and the Wizard of Oz. The wonder and imagination in those books has inspired me to create.

I’m not sure I could design without listening to music… I like a variety of stuff, but I lean towards music I can sing to. My favorites lately are Christian worship music by Hillsong United, for King & Country, and Lauren Daigle mixed with stuff like Purity Ring, Celtic Women, and random movie soundtracks.

tools

Computer: We have a PC that’s running Windows 7, it has about 16.0 GB of RAM and a processor that’s 3.60 GHz. 64-bit operating system. I have dual monitors (one is 24″, the other is 19″) and a black keyboard that is quite clickety and clackety. I also have a little laptop computer that I use when my husband is using the desktop… but itʻs not my fave.

Program: I use Adobe CC. I create patterned papers and illustrations in Illustrator and create everything else in Photoshop.

Camera: We have a Canon Rebel Xti, but I hardly use it. I prefer my small and incredibly powerful mirrorless Sony RX100 camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 and takes good photos, too.

Anything Else: I use an Epson Perfection V500 PHOTO flatbed scanner for scanning my doodles and items I want to extract. We have a wacom tablet, but I can’t get used to it so I just use my mouse. For doodling I use Sharpie Pens and Prismacolor colored pencils on white printer paper.

tipstricks

2015 was a stressful year for me. It was hard to SEE the good things in my life, I was so focused on the stress of everyday life and just going, going, going. Work, work, work. I didnʻt get many layouts scrapped and I didnʻt often reflect on the most precious moments we shared through the year. They got forgotten. That made me sad!

If I have any advice this year it is to stop and get it scrapped… just pick a template or let yourself be free to keep it simple – whatever you need to get the job done. Type a few memories in a document and save them so you donʻt forget. Take pictures (who cares if they are perfect). And PRINT ALBUMS.

Printing a book of my scrapbook pages made me feel so much better about my memory-keeping. I havenʻt printed layouts in ages… and one day in January I just did it. I didnʻt care if I had an entire consecutive year scrapped. I didnʻt care if the pages were in order. I just clicked order with haste and 7 days later the 4 of us were huddled together on the couch pouring over the book with the warmth and love of times remembered. *grin* Iʻm so glad I did it… and in 2016 I plan to print a book every 3 months to get through the stash of unprinted layouts on my hard drive.

I had a blast designing this kit! After seeing the Jurassic World movie I knew I had to make a fun dinosaur kit. I felt inspired throughout the process. It was fun scanning stuff from home (like my kids toy dinos and a fossil tooth) and creating the illustrations and elements with input from my kids. Boyish kits donʻt come easily to me, so I was thrilled with the result and yeah… proud of myself. Iʻm new enough at this that I still have those moments of WOW I am doing this. I can do this! This is my dream job.

This pack of templates (and her sister packs which Iʻve bundled together) have been a hit in my store this year. Sometimes when Iʻm creating templates I wonder if Iʻm going too far… too funky with the colors, too messy with the cuts, or crazy with the shapes. LOL But this pack got lucky. I was having a good day at work, I guess. These templates are a great mix of ʻhey, look at me, Iʻm differentʻ and ʻyou could totally use theseʻ. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
