Gratitude Journal {week nine}

On Sundays this year at The Daily Digi, we are going to be sharing a FREE weekly gratitude journal spread. These pages are a place for you to record little memories you don’t want to forget, little reasons to be grateful. Each week their will be a gratefulness quote as well as a few photo spots.

You can use these FREE pages in a number of ways:

1) As digital scrapbooking templates. The download will always include .psd files for both 2-page 12×12 spreads as well as 2-page 8.5×11 spreads. You can add your own papers and elements and scrap ’till your heart’s content! (This is also a good option for those of you who get twitchy because I started the week with Friday. Since January 1 is a Friday, I like to start each week that way, but you may not! Feel free to adjust as needed!

2) As a digital journal. Keep the colors and text just as they are. Simply flatten the layers and add your notes of gratitude. Easy peasy!

3) As printed pages. Print out and write on them the good old-fashioned way. There is a .pdf file included for printing two letter-sized pages. Print your photos and attach!

If you have missed previous weeks, grab them HERE.

_____

If you have used the templates or print-outs, we’d LOVE to see them! Share a link in the comments or EMAIL ME . We just might feature your page!

Be sure to be back next week for your next FREE journal template!

“Beautiful” Locations for Taking Photos

It’s that time of year again! The chilly days will start to be outnumbered by the warm spring air. Families who have been huddled inside for months avoiding the winter weather are ready for evenings to be filled with long walks in nothing more than a light jacket. Spring is getting ready to be sprung and I can’t wait! And neither can my camera!

It’s easy to peruse Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest and be in awe of the beautiful photographs we see (especially in April when all the Texans start posting their bluebonnet pictures!) It is also easy to be envious of the gorgeous locations others seem to have when all we have are ugly woods, public parks, and streets strewn with litter.

One thing I have learned over the past few years is that “beautiful locations” for photos depend very little on the location itself and much more on these three things:

1) Being able to see beauty where others cannot. It’s the potential for beauty we need to be able to recognize.

2) Knowing how to work our camera and lens(es) in order to maximize a situation/location

3) Editing that starts before the shutter is even clicked. Having a vision for the final image will help you know how and where to shoot as well as how to edit.

It is my belief that you can take gorgeous photographs almost anywhere!

A few weeks ago, we had an unseasonably warm evening. It was bliss! Our whole family took advantage of the rare evening and we grabbed scooters and ripsticks and bikes and meandered down our street. It felt so good to be outside with my family, enjoying our time together and being with my camera again.

We got to the end of our street and we were preparing the turn around. That part of the road hasn’t been built on and the lots tend to be overgrown and covered in trash. I could see the sun starting to set behind the trees and I knew it was the perfect place to snap a few pictures. Ugly as it first appeared, I saw something beautiful. I asked my seven-year-old to let me take a few pictures. She thought I was crazy, but she agreed. And I was right. Trash and overgrown weeds aside, it was beautiful!

(I’ve included the before and after so you can see the role that editing takes. My goal in editing is to make the final product match the vision I had before I clicked the shutter.)

I did this same thing in the summer of 2014. Someone I know and love had a real habit about complaining about where she lived and how ugly it was. I had always loved her home and street and so I took my camera out one morning to show her that beauty is everywhere, if only we open our eyes to see.

The first photo is the pullback shot, the “ugly” scene we dismiss as unworthy to photograph. The second (and sometimes third) photos are my shots in that exact location.

So as you contemplate getting outside more with your camera, try to see each location with a new set of eyes. You’ll be surprised that with a little know-how and a lot of vision, you can create beautiful images anywhere!

Acrylic Paint on Canvas – Michael Myers Portrait

started

I began my design career by editing friends’ photos and creating Baby Center forum signatures. From there, I decided to try out designing my own products.

inspired

My main inspiration is real, everyday life. The ideas for a lot of my products are born from my need for product to scrapbook my own family photos.

tools

Computer: I work on a 13″ MacBook Pro with 8G of RAM and am running Yosemite OS X.

Program: I use both Adobe Illustrator CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6.

Camera: I sometimes stick with my trusty old Nikon D90 but other times scrapbook photos from either my iPhone 5S or my boyfriend’s iPhone 6 Plus.

Anything Else: I currently use Wacom’s Bamboo Fun Pen And Touch 6×9 Tablet.

tipstricks

Recently, I scrapped a page that included journaling in my eight year old’s own handwriting. A great way to achieve this is by photographing or scanning your child’s handwriting and creating a Photoshop brush out of it.

tips on creating your own brushes.

Adding Emphasis with Frames and More!

Adding Emphasis with Frames and More!

I love blocked pages, especially for multi-photo designs. They usually come together easily and each little block is an opportunity to show off something – whether it is a photo, journalling, paper or elements.

To add emphasis and highlight aspects of this page, I used some common framing techniques and products.

Supplies: Life 2016: February by Melissa Bennett, E.Z. album v.9 by Erica Zane

Frame

First up is, of course, the ever-popular frame! Often seen framing photos, it is equally useful at framing paper and as a layering piece in clusters.

Mat

Matting layouts on cardstock is an easy way to frame the page and put focus on the central design. I often create a double-mat to really add emphasis, but on this page I went with a single mat.

White Stroke

Adding a white border around pictures is my go-to way to help them stand out against the background.

Thin Border Outline

The line border around the journalling adds interest to an otherwise plain piece of cardstock and it is a quick finishing touch.

Stitching Frame

On this page, I used a purchased template with a stitched border. It beautifully separates each part of the grid.

That’s five different ways of adding emphasis to a layout! What are some of your best tricks for making parts of your layouts stand out?

Finishing Touches in a Flash: Using the PSE Favorites Panel

Do you find yourself reaching for the same styles and shadows every time you open Photoshop Elements?

Make it easy on yourself and set up some favorites.

When you are working in Expert mode, there is a favorite panel on the right hand side of your screen. It comes pre-loaded with some favorites, but you can remove them and add your own.

Here’s how to use favorites:

  1. To add an item to the favorites, simply click with your right mouse button (or Cmd+Click on a Mac) and select Add to Favorites.
  2. To remove an item to the favorites, simply click with your right mouse button (or Cmd+Click on a Mac) and select Remove from Favorites.
  3. To view your favorites, click on the star icon at the bottom right of the screen, or the favorites tab (if you are using the custom workspace).
  4. To apply a favorite to your layout, just double click on the icon.

Remember, if you are using the custom workspace mode, you can drag a panel out of the Panel Bin if you want to remove it from the Panel Bin and keep it open.

Favorites in Action

Here’s my page, almost finished.

I used my favorites to quickly add:

  1. A title with Anna Forrest’s script/action
  2. Added borders to my photos with Wendyzine’s styles
  3. Added a low shadow to the paper elements using One Little Bird’s styles
  4. Saved it for the web and as a high resolution jpg

You can see it’s made all the difference, the layout looks much more finished and are ready for printing!

Favorites make it quick and easy to get those pages done!

Name

My name is Willemijne and I live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne Australia with my amazing husband Peter. We both grew up in The Netherlands, but after we finished Uni we decided to go on an adventure and explore a new country. We moved to Australia for ‘at least a few years’ and that’s now over 5 years ago. We love this beautiful country but still also really miss our friends and family back home.

Peter and I love to go hiking! Whether we go for short walks on the weekend or do overnight hikes on holidays, it is something we spend a lot of time doing! It’s a perfect way to enjoy nature and explore the beautiful scenery of Australia. So when I designed the Take A Hike collection, I had to scrap with it! This is from our trip to the Northern Territory.

started

I once made a paper photo/scrapbook of our trip to Morocco after a friend showed me her scrapbook. I had never heard of it before but I immediately loved it! When looking for inspiration online I discovered Digital Scrapbooking. I did a few projects but soon started designing my own things and it turned out I loved that even more than scrapping. It took a while before I found out there is this huge awesome community behind it and I am so glad to have been part of it ever since! Designing truly is my passion!

inspired

A lot of things around me inspire me, but I think color might inspire me the most. I love beautiful color palettes and they can make me so happy and eager to design new product!

tools

Computer: I have a Windows HP laptop, Intel Core i5 with 8Gb RAM but I am looking to buy a new one in the near future.

Program: I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator

Camera: A Canon Powershot SX20is

Anything Else: Two of my other ‘designer tools’ I can’t do without are my graphics tablet and my Epson Perfection scanner

tipstricks

I think one of my favorite little ‘tricks’ is to press down the Ctrl button and click on a layer in your Photoshop document. That way that layer is immediately selected in the layers panel and you don’t have to go looking for it. I use it all the time while designing as well!

favorite

I always find this a difficult question and it changes quite often, but one of my favorites must be Perfect Pear! The colors are so beautiful and I love the little spin on the theme. It makes it perfect for Fall, love and everyday pages!

I have always loved musicals and Peter and I even worked in the theater for a while when we first arrived in Melbourne (and got to see a lot of shows!). The Lion King has always been one of my favorites and I saw it in The Netherlands years ago. After seeing it again in Melbourne I got inspired by the beautiful colors and designed Animal Kingdom. I think it’s so popular because it can be used for everything from Disney, to zoo, to outdoors adventures.
