Gratitude

As you start a new week, I want to encourage you to think deeply on this quote. It’s so easy to overlook the everyday things in our lives due to the sheer fact that they are always there. Our family. Our home. Our safety. Our freedom. Our health. Our potential.

But what if these things disappeared? What we once took for granted would become the thing we longed for most.

Gratitude is one of my favorite by-products of photography and scrapbooking. Taking the time to notice and record the everyday mundane parts of life reminds me of how blessed I am. Despite the pain, despite the struggles, despite the uncertainties of life, there is so much to be grateful for.

Here in the United States, we’ve just finished up a holiday that calls us to be thankful. As we now rush full speed ahead into the Christmas season, let’s not lose sight of what is truly precious. The things you long to buy this year will be the things that are cluttering your house next year. Don’t let them consume you while you miss seeing the things that most deserve your gratitude.

Use Two Templates Side by Side

With the holidays just around the corner you will be taking lots of photos!

When it comes to scrapbooking, the fashion for single pages, mini-albums and phonebooking leaves many of us more prolific photographers wondering how to fit all those photos into our albums. Sometimes there are just too many great photos to fit on just one square layout. If you’ve ever felt cramped for space, I’ve got a solution for you!

I’ll show you how to make a DIY two-page layout, from two different templates. In my example I’m using Anna Aspnes Arty Template Multipack 5.

  1. Open one template (aka Right hand Template)
  2. Save as a new PSD file.
  3. Click Image > Resize > Canvas Size…
  4. Fix the template to the existing canvas to one edge by using the Anchor squares.
    canvas size

I wanted the first template I chose to be on the right hand side, so I clicked on the center-right square.
  5. Click Ok.
  6. Open the second template (aka Left hand Template).
  7. Select all layers.
  8. Layer > Duplicate Layers
  9. Select the PSD you saved in step two (Right hand Template) as the Destination Document.
    duplicate layers

In my case I also moved a few layers on the template and even added a couple more photo spots by copying a few layers to make the whole page seem more balanced. Now it’s time to scrap!

TIP When you duplicate the layers from Left hand Template they will be placed into the double-page spread on the left hand side. I like to start with the right hand page in the first step to avoid needing to move the template layers after step 9. If you forget, don’t worry, just move the selected layers right away and it will move only the newly duplicated layers from the second.

How To Save a Two Page Layout for Printing

Did you know that many photobook printers now allow you to spread your photo across two pages? Adoramapix, Snapfish and Shutterfly all now have this feature.

But if you want to print your layout as two square layouts, you’ll just need to follow these steps

  1. Go to the Image Menu, then click- Resize then Canvas Size.
  2. For the left hand side – change the New size width to 12 inches.
  3. Under Anchor, click the left arrow so that it matches the above – this means it will cut off the right hand edge.
  4. Click OK to apply the change in canvas size.
  5. Click OK to warning message – we want the clipping to occur.
  6. Save As… to save this end result as a JPG file (not over your original! Please!)
  7. Open up original saved PSD file and repeat for the right hand side – this time setting it to anchor on the right.
  8. Then upload the 2 new photos and place them each in a full page template.

Turkey Cake

Last Thanksgiving, my Aunt and I agreed to share the cooking of the meal. I would make our family’s favorites and she would bring some of her and my uncle’s can’t-have-Thanksgiving-without foods. We had a feast! Roasted Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, homemade rolls, cranberry sauce, corn, and more.

My aunt also told me she would bring a dessert, but that it was a surprise for the kids. After taking a break and cleaning up the meal, my aunt summoned the kids to the kitchen and she told them a story:

“Your mom and were splitting up the meal, deciding on who would cook what. Apparently I was supposed to bring dessert but I got it mixed up and I brought another turkey. I feel bad, but I don’t want it to go to waste. So, who’s hungry?”

The kids, bellies already full, looked forlornly at my aunt who then proceeded to uncover her “turkey”. It looked like the real deal!

Upon closer inspection, things didn’t look quite right. That skin was looking mighty pasty!

We decided to carve it up and see what was going on…

To the children’s delight, inside this “turkey” was a cavity filled not with stuffing, but rather, CANDY!

Needless to say, the kids were no longer full and were begging for another piece of “turkey!” Such a fun dessert. The stuffing looked so real and the spinach and cranberry bed which were real, gave it an authenticity beyond compare.

Easy Thanksgiving Banner

Last year on Thanksgiving, we were staying in a fully furnished rental house. As appreciative as we were, I lamented not being able to make it my own. The decor wasn’t really my style and there wasn’t a lot I could do about it.

When it comes to the holidays, I really like to make things pretty. For Thanksgiving, we were having guests over and I wanted to add a few personal touches. I didn’t have a lot to work with, but I haven’t let that stop me before.

I decided to make a quick Thanksgiving banner to hang over the table. I didn’t want the day to just be about turkey and stuffing. I wanted a visual reminder of all the things I am thankful for.

So, I went to my photo folder (where much of my thankfulness resides!) and I picked out a few favorites, all representing things in my life I am grateful for. I printed the pictures, attached them to square pieces of burlap, and hung them from a string over my table. It didn’t take more than an hour, but we left the banner up for weeks, an ever-present reminder of the blessings in our lives.

What about you? Do you have any special Thanksgiving decorations or crafts?
