Hi! I’m Yin, of Yin Designs. I am a wife of twenty one years to my husband (and friend of thirty years) and mom to boys who are now eighteen and sixteen. We live in tropical Singapore, a very cosmopolitan city and I love the similarities and diversity I see in our lives, stories and layouts in the scrapbooking community across the world!
The phase of life I’m in now with nearly out of the nest children determines a lot of what and how I scrapbook and share. Teenagers don’t like their photos taken nor their lives shared online! No matter what, scrapbooking my memories comes first for me, and all my templates are created from my own layouts. It’s unbelievable that I’ve been blogging nine years and the store almost as long! I think our lives and stories and adventures keep inspiring layouts and hence templates, while the store keeps me motivated to be consistently working on new layout ideas. I love doing this!

We have a tradition of writing Birthday prayers for our sons every year. A few years after I started scrapbooking I made these into layouts for each of them. When they are twenty one I plan to bind them into a book as a present. My husband and I take turns to write each boy’s prayer every year, we tell how much and why we thank God for them, our hopes and wishes and prayers for them, in the form of a letter to them.
Both boys’ birthdays are in January, 3 days apart, and it is wonderful to start each year and birthday with such a keepsake. Usually I add a few photos of each of them in the layout, from when they were young or current ones. In recent years I take the opportunity to play with an artsy style, and these layouts are ones I really treasure!

I have always been memory keeper. But a trip to our local library where my husband passed me a copy of Creating Keepsakes, started me on scrapbooking as we know it. Within a year I had discovered digital scrapping, loved it so much and jumped in with both feet! At first I even designed kits but very soon decided time for my own layouts is more important. At that time I started sharing layouts on my blog. From a few requests for templates came the blog store. And to this day I make my layouts, and turn them into templates.

Almost always, my photos and the story I want to tell, or capture. My starting point is always selecting the photos and laying them on a blank page. Color choice is very key to my layouts, usually a neutral background and one or two accent colors is chosen that will highlight the photos and unify the layout. The story too determines the style I’ll go with, for example, for our trip to London, we wanted to convey the quirkiness and funkiness of the city so I went with that as the theme for all my layouts. I used paints, hand drawn elements and doodles on black and white backgrounds. Such fun and I loved the look!

Computer: I’m on a Toshiba LXb30 (with built in 24″ monitor) running on Windows 7 with 16 GB RAM, and 1 TB memory.

Program: I sometimes use Adobe Illustrator using a Bamboo tablet, and am now on Adobe Photoshop CS6.

Camera: I use my iphone 5s almost exclusively now! Our travel photos are mostly captured by my husband using his Canon S90 for years. He finally upgraded to the Canon S120 a year ago but lost it on our trip to Taiwan (that’s another story which you can read on my blog!). He just got himself a Canon G7X and loves it now.

Anything Else: nope 🙂

Really, I don’t use much fancy techniques so let me just share how I stay motivated in my scrapbooking and finishing those projects! You know travel albums are my thing, but it can get draining in the middle of a 100 page book, and it also used to take me ages finding the perfect background and embellishments for each page – I mean, we are spoiled for choice!!
Now before I start each book, I plan and choose a theme first. For my London book, it was to be fun and quirky with black and white backgrounds and artsy elements. For my Taiwan book (like the template included in this month’s Digi Files), it was black background, straight linear style with word art, some buttons, ribbons and Font for titles. For my P365 month in review pages, it is always graph paper background with alpha for the Title month. For my Hawaii album, it was wood backgrounds and realistic 3D embellishments that look like they were placed on the wood together with my photos. You get the idea!
Once decided, I first go through my stash to pick out all the backgrounds and embellishments for that project and copy them into a new folder. I will stick to these throughout my layouts and they move much faster, and also flow better with a united theme. I found that 90% of the time I am able to stick with the pre-selected supplies, and you can imagine how much faster the pages flow!

This is a difficult question! I really like my album sets that are built on a particular concept, and these five sets were built on the theme of a giant photo taking up half a double page. They are from my Vietnam travel book, and the entire album was laid out this way. I was not sure at first if I would find enough great photos to enlarge, but the challenge proved to be so fun and the album beautiful!

I have to say, since 2012 these sets of Bi-monthly (or Half Monthly) templates have been my most popular products. They are Yin Templates sets 290, 317, 380, and 431 (added this year), with a total assortment of 32 different templates, each featuring 15 or 16 photos, making up a month of daily photos.
I have been using them for my own photos-a-day layouts, helping me document each month and whole years (since 2012) easily and happily. You can read more of my process on my blog, but basically I take a picture on my phone, save them on one of the 365 apps. At the end of the month, open two of these templates, slot all the pictures in, add some embellishments, month in review journalling, and I’m done. It takes me about two nights a month. Judging by their popularity, I think many others are feeling the same way about documenting their days!
