6 Unique Photoshop Elements Features (That Photoshop CC Wishes It Had)

Every time you open Photoshop Elements and head straight to the Expert Mode, you overlook dozens of shortcuts that could save you hours on your photo editing. Today, I’ll dive in and show you some of features in Photoshop Elements that are not available in Photoshop CC.

Photo bin PSE14 photo bin

Drag and drop from the Photo Bin in Photoshop Elements 13This is the feature Photoshop Elements users know and love – but today I’ll share with you a few extra tips to unleash the power of the Photo Bin!

But first, what is the Photo Bin? The Photo Bin (also called the Project bin in PSE6-10) located at the bottom of the main Photoshop Elements window.

The Photo Bin will show all your open files, or a selected album from the Organizer.

With the Photo bin you can:

PSE14 auto show tool optionsIf you have a recent version of PSE and the tool options keep covering the photo bin, you can turn that off by clicking the Auto Show Tool Options in the menu to the top right in the tool options panel. At any time you can click the Photo bin button to show it again.

I have both PSE and PS installed on my computer, and the easy access to albums and open files is the number one reason I keep turning to PSE every time I want to scrapbook!

Quick Edit Mode

IPhotoshop Elements quick edit modef you’ve ever been confused about what adjustment layers to add to which photos (or if you don’t even know what adjustment layers are) you will love the Quick Edit mode in Photoshop Elements.

The Adjustments panel in Quick Edit mode takes the most common photo fixes, like exposure, lighting (levels) and color adjustments and puts them right at your fingertips. Just work from top to bottom using the preview images and sliders to get your photo looking good.

Photoshop Elements Quick Edit Effects ModePlus, there are over 50 custom looks you can add to your photos in 10 different categories in the Effects Panel – think of them as Instagram filters, Lightroom presets or Radlab looks. Photoshop Elements does all the hard work and you just click on the look you want, drag a sliders and off you go!

There’s also 10 textures and 10 frames to choose from in the remaining tabs.

If you are new to the quick edit mode, I show you how to use it in my class, Fast Photo Fixes.

Guided Edit Mode

Photoshop Elements New Guided EditsThe Guided Edit mode walks you through more advanced photo editing scenarios with a combination of instructional text and tools.

There are 40 guided edits ranging from Photomerge Group Shot (where you can merge multiple photos to make sure *everyone* is looking at the camera!) to fun edits like the new Speed Effect.

Photoshop Elements 14 speed guided edit

That said, Photoshop CC users do have access to one Photomerge, the panorama (head to File > Photomerge… to try it in PSCC).

One of my favorite guided edits is the Restore an Old Photo.

If you have Photoshop Elements, you really should take the time to try out out guided edits. You’ll find that there’s a lot creative and useful edits there.

Create & Share

At the top right of the Editor window, there’s two features that are often overlooked. The Create menu helps you, well, create custom projects. The share menu allows you to quickly and simply share your work online.

Photoshop Elements Create menuCreate

The Create menu contains a treasure trove of options, everything from printing multiple photos, to calendars to a Facebook cover.

One of the little known features of Photoshop Elements is the ability to create a whole album within a PSE (Photoshop Elements Project) file. 31 styles of Photo Books are available, and you can also delete the existing designs or create your own using the Advanced mode. You can export your photobooks at 220 dpi as a JPEG, TIFF or PDF. Depending on where you are in the world it also interfaces with photo book printers, such as Shutterfly. This is a great stepping stone for the newer users who want more flexibility than an online photobook creator and aren’t ready for the complications of handling lots of individual files.

Why not take a look at the create menu today!

Share

Photoshop Elements Share menuThe share button makes it simple to share your photos online with Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Just a little something to make your day easier.

Organizer

Lphotoshop elements organizer adaptive gridong before Lightroom was even a twinkle in Adobe’s eye, PSE users had the powerful, automated features in Organizer to make managing photos quick and easy.

The Organizer has come a long way since 2003, and with each version it becomes easier (and faster!) to work with a large library of photos or digital supplies.

Your people are recognized, everything is popped neatly onto a map and your events are easy to find and label. All you need to do is select your photos scrapbook!

I could write pages about my love for the Organizer. Oh wait, I already have!

You can jump into Organizer with my two Get Organized classes here at the Daily Digi.

If you want to learn more about organizing your photos to make scrapping easier, you’ll want to join me for Get Organized: Photos. In five 15-minute sessions you can get a handle on your photos and set up a system that works for you!

Get-Organized-Photos

Get Organized: Supplies will teach you the quick and easy way to get your supplies under control. Inside Get Organized: Supplies there’s a worksheet to help you decide what organizing system will work for you and I’ll walk you through the process step by step. Tame that shopping addiction and use all the beautiful products you’ve purchased with Get Organized: Supplies.

So Photoshop Elements lovers, what features keep you coming back?

Placeholder Text Is a Surprisingly Useful Tool

Placeholder Text Is a Surprisingly Useful Tool

I love journaling on my scrapbook pages. In my pages, I try to link stories to photos. I also make pages without photos just to capture a special memory for my family. So why do I sometimes add placeholder text on my pages instead of real journaling?

Reasons to Use Placeholder Text

There are two reasons I like to use placeholder text.

First, I will use random text when I don’t want to share my journaling publicly. If my actual journaling has a lot of identifying details or is very person to me, I will use random text on the version that I share in public scrapbooking galleries.

The second reason I use placeholder text is during the page creation process, to help me add text as a design element on my scrapbook pages. When I am trying to find balance on a page, I like to visualize how the journaling is going to fit into the design. If I’m not ready to write the journaling yet, I’ll use placeholder text so that I can test different fonts, text sizes, line spacing, et cetera.

Lorem Ipsum

Perhaps the most common placeholder text is called Lorem Ipsum. This is a piece of scrambled latin text that has been in use for many years. This is what I use as placeholder text on my pages.

Lorem Ipsum has words and sentences in a variety of lengths. This is important in design because it approximates actual writing. Take a look at the example text below, with one side showing a repeated sample sentence and the other side showing Lorem Ipsum. Both paragraphs are in the same font, weight, line spacing, and paragraph alignment. But, the Lorem Ipsum text more closely resembles what the actual paragraph will look like once real journaling is placed there.

For a long time, I’ve kept a copy of Lorem Ipsum in a text file on my desktop. Then, whenever I need text to work with in a design, I just copy Lorem Ipsum and place it in my Photoshop document.

I recently learned that Photoshop can do this automatically! With the text tool active and using either a line or text box, select Type>Paste Lorem Ipsum from the menu.

Paste lorem ipsum

With the Lorem Ipsum text in place, it is easy to play with the font, font size, line spacing, et cetera.

Due to the Rafflecopter outage earlier this week, we’ve extended the following giveaway through 10am 10/29/15, EST.

started

I started digital scrapbooking in 2009 and just fell in love from the first. Then I tried designing my own stuff. I didn’t take a course or class, just trial and error. All my books are my best teachers ever in digi designing. My skills improve little by little to get me where I am now.

inspired

Everything… it can be what I feel, it can be my journey, or simply a color combo.

tools

Computer: Computer: I am using AMD Phenom 3.4Hz (little bit old), 8GB memory, and using windows Vista 64 bit.

Program: Adobe Photoshop CS 6 & Illustrator CS 5, that’s all that I need to scrap!

Camera: Just a pocket camera, Casio exilim 🙂 still use this

Anything Else: Have a Bamboo wacom tablet for doodling and create handwriting font. (I am sharing my font for free at my blog if you want to collect them 😉 )

tipstricks

If your favorite font doesn’t have bold type, go to the blending option and give it stroke with the same color you use to the font 1px (or to suit to your project) 😉

Photography is the Only Language

I read this quote a while back and it has stayed with me. It is oh so true! I love to communicate in words, but my photographs allow me to communicate without words, in a way that anyone can understand. This begs the question,

“What do we want our photographs to communicate?”

Look at these photos from Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/explore/)

These photos were taken all over the world. And yet, we can understand them. We can draw inspiration, meaning, and emotion from them. They communicate.

This makes me think deeply about my photos, even just the simple snapshots of our daily life. What do they communicate? What do I want them to communicate? If they don’t communicate what I want them to, what could I do differently?

What about you?

My Secret Weapon

Supplies are from Oh Snap! by Shawna Clingerman and Libby Pritchett

One of the questions I am asked most is how I get my kids to cooperate for the camera. Many people lament, “My kids just won’t do what I want them to do!”

I get it. I really do. But my kids are usually willing to work with me for pictures without too much trouble. Here are some of the ways I make it work.

1. My kids are used to the camera. I have it out all of the time and it is just a part of our daily life. If that isn’t the case for you, it might take a while for them to get used to it.

2. I rarely ask them to pose for me. I want pictures of my kids just being themselves. I know that when I am old and grey, I won’t want to remember the posed and “perfect” photos nearly as much as I want to remember the real and spontaneous. I don’t make my kids say cheese.

3. I don’t (usually) get upset with them, stressing them out with, “Say cheese! Turn this way! Turn that way! No, not like that!” Who would want to have their photo taken if that was what they were going to get?

4. My secret weapon: “If we get one like mom wants, we can do photos any way YOU want.”

(note: this works best with the ten and under crowd!)

Occasionally, I do want a traditional photo with them looking at the camera. Sometimes this is because I just want a photo of them and sometimes it is because I am practicing a certain skill/technique with my camera and I really need someone to model for me. If I want to work on getting tack-sharp eyes, I need a child willing to cooperate long enough and sit still enough for me to practice! So this is what I do:

I tell the child that once I get the photo or two I really want, I will take any photos of them they want. And I mean it! They often drag me all sorts of places and make all sorts of silly faces and poses. But they love it! They know that if they give me a minute or two of cooperation, they will get me for as long as they want. They love having control over the situation and they are thrilled that I would take pictures of all their silly antics!

Here are some examples from a few weeks ago:

1. I asked my seven-year-old to stand/sit in the woods while I played with the sun and sun-flare. She wasn’t thrilled (Her siblings were rip-sticking) but I told her we could do anything she wanted afterward. I got these:

And then, for some only-a-seven-year-old-would-understand reason, she wanted me to take a picture of her drinking her root beer (a rare treat in our family). Done.

I wanted a sweet picture of my four year old because I loved the new dress she was wearing. I told her once I got a good picture of her actually looking at me and smiling, she could make whatever silly faces she wanted. Win-win.

Learning well from his sisters, after asking my little man to take a picture of him on the picnic table (jn all his messy-faced glory), he then wanted me to take “more pictures!” I was happy to oblige!

Letting kids have some control over the pictures really goes a long way in helping them cooperate. And I have sneaking feeling that the ones the kids direct just might turn out to be your favorites!

started

I was a paper scrapper for a very short time when I began looking online for ideas. I came across a digital scrapbooking site and decided to give it a try. The more I became familiar with photoshop the more confident I was that I could design my own kits and my designing career began in 2008.

inspired

There are so many inspirations in the world! I can get inspired by a colorful shirt, a theme, browsing pinterest and so many more things.

tools

Computer: I am running Windows 8 operating system with an Intel Core i3 preocessor, 6GB DDR3 Memory and an Intel HD Graphics.

Program: I am using Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6. I do have ArtRage in my laptop that I use every great once in a while.

Camera: Canon EOS XSi SLR

Anything Else: I have a small bamoo tablet that I use in Illustrator for drawing/doodling and a Canon Canoscan 9000F Mark II scanner.

tipstricks

I would just encourage you to step outside your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to try new things. If you’re a minimalist scrapper, try adding tons more elements, brushes, etc. to your layouts, try art journal type pages or even try your hand at hybrid. You never know, you may just fall in love with something new.

My most popular product, much like my favorite, was inspired by the colors and versatility of use in the theme. It’s all about This Life and can be used to record memories from the new to the old, children and adults alike. The colors are soft but sophisticated with the charcoal grey and that’s what I really like about them.
