Searching For Slideshow Apps

Recently, I was asked to create a slideshow for a family memorial service. I sat down with my pile of scanned and digital photos and set to work. I started with Open Office’s version of Power Point, but I couldn’t figure out how to export the file in a format that would work on any system. Since I wasn’t super familiar with Power Point, I felt like I was spending more time teaching myself how to use it than actually creating the slide show. So I moved on.

My next stop was ScreenFlow, a video editing App. ScreenFlow works great and has tons of options, but I would have to manually place, position and time each photo and transition. That was clearly going to take more time than I had.

That brought me to Google’s doorstep. I found a few online options, but I didn’t really want to be uploading pictures sent to me from other people to a website I didn’t really know much about.

However, not all was lost as that search led me to Lightroom. Lightroom was a great option, but because many of photos I had were emailed from other people, or scanned, they weren’t really sorted or even imported into Lightroom. To use them effectively, I’d have to sort them into the right folders on my hard drive and then import them. Finally, I’d need to add them to a collection in order to work with them.

The slideshow interface itself seemed pretty easy to use, but it lacked the transitions I was looking for.

Finally, it occurred to me to try the new Photos App that appeared in the last Mac OS release. Since I hadn’t used it before, I had to import the photos and scans I wanted to use. That was easy enough. I exported all the digital photos I needed that were already in Lightroom to JPGs and stored the copy in the same folder as the scans and other photos that had been emailed to me, and got to work.

Here’s a brief overview on how I created the slideshow in Photos.

1) Launch the PHOTOS APP.

2) Click the PHOTOS TAB and choose one of the file import methods. I opted to simply drag and drop the JPGs onto the open app window. 100 photos imported in just a few seconds.

3) Select ALL IMPORTED PHOTOS by using the CMD+A keyboard command.

4) To start a new Slideshow, click FILE>CREATE SLIDESHOW and give it a name.

5) You’ll be moved over to the PROJECTS tab to begin the Slideshow. Your Title is automatically placed on the first slide. You can remove that title if you want. I ended up creating my own title page in Photoshop and imported it as a JPG to serve as the first slide. To remove the text, right+click the Text Thumbnail on the bottom and choose DELETE.

6) Before rearranging the photos, choose a THEME. Click the SLIDESHOW icon on the right of the screen to show the available choices. Some of the options look very similar until you press PLAY to preview the transitions. I love the Vintage Prints option which I chose for the memorial service. Magazine and Origami are fun choices as well.

7) Choose your MUSIC.You can select a built-in ditty or any song in your iTunes library. You can add multiple tracks if your song isn’t long enough for your pictures.

8) Click the CLOCK icon to set your music OPTIONS. You can opt to fit the slideshow transitions to the length of music or set an exact length of the slideshow.

9) Now it’s time to tweak the photos. Depending on your template, you may have several photos on one slide. You can drag the images around into a different order and the Photos app will automatically adjust the template it uses for each slide. This can get a little tricky. Sometimes, Photos insists on placing certain photos on the same slide and you cannot really control it. That was the only frustration I had with the app. I sometimes had to reorder images slightly differently in order to get the images I wanted on the same slide to stay together.

10) Preview your slideshow by pressing the PLAY button. If you’re happy, click EXPORT and choose from 3 different sizes (480p, 720p and 1280p). You can also choose to automatically send a copy of your movie to iTunes to sync to your devices if desired. Export can take a while if you have a long video and choose the highest quality.

Want to see a video I made about my trip to Italy last summer? This one took about 15 minutes to make and it’s about 2 minutes to watch.

(Enter the password below, then you may have to click the Title on the image to open the video in a new window.)

PASSWORD: ITALY

If you make a video, share it in the comments!

Bonus Tip:
To create multiple photo libraries, hold in the OPTION key while launching the Photos App. You’ll be prompted to choose an existing library, or create a new one.

Name

I am Elif, the designer behind Sahin Designs. I live in Turkey. My favorite season is Autumn and if the season is not rainy there is no person happier than me! I have brown hair, brown eyes, and I look younger than I actually am. I wonder if this is a good thing at all! I love all type of crafts and can’t get out of hobby & pen shops; love poems and good quotes, love to stash pieces of papers, fabrics, and ribbons. I am an aunt for two years. Despite that I love my nephew very much, I still find having a child as the craziest thing in the world!

layout

This is my first print project. I made it to record my nephew’s first autumn memories at my old college campus. I love this project because it is an autumn album and filled with dried leaves, fall colors and lots of journaling. I tried to match the pages throughout this project so I could catch harmony. I noted a lot of things while making it and actually post about this process on my blog in two parts (
Part IPart II)
Though I forgot about using one or two matching fonts for journaling and titles so I needed to review it before I printed them out.

My adventure with digital scrapbooking started at Pixel Scrapper more than a year ago. Before, I never made scrapbook digitally or on paper. But I am a quick learner and since I always love designing I became “scrap addict” rather quickly. I attempted to make paper scrapbook twice but those experiences didn’t turn out well so I decided to keep designing digitally.

inspired

Anything can be an inspiration for my projects. I love surfing on Pinterest and I can be inspired by a quote, a color palette or a photo. But most of all, and weirdly, Etsy newsletters are like my mood board. There are lots of inspiration to take from those hand picked crafts.

tools

Computer: I am using an Asus laptop. It runs on Windows 8 but I do love Win7 much more! It has 8 GB RAM, 1 TB built in hard drive, 15,6 inch monitor size and has great display quality.

Program: I am heavily using Photoshop CC for designing. And also Illustrator for drawing illustrations and I am practicing hand lettering on it.

Camera: I have a Nikon D3100 together with 35mm lens. This is my first DSLR and I am still using it.

Anything Else: Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch. I don’t know what I would do without it!

tipstricks

When you work on a multi layered file in Photoshop you can hold down alt and click on the eye icon of the layer you are working on. This will make other layers invisible and you will work on a clean background.

Down the Aisle was my dream kit that I always want to create. I imagined it as dominated by green and white because I am dreaming a spring wedding for myself. And it was my sister’s request to include so many flowers. Indeed I designed Down the Aisle first and foremost for “my wedding”. I am not married yet, but I can say that this collection is what I am going to scrap my wedding with 🙂

I haven’t thought what is the most popular kit of Sahin Designs until you asked this question! Well, when I take a quick look at the shop statistics I can clearly say that “A Little Sparkle” is the most loved collection by my followers. People always love red-green-gold combination and I used it a lot in this kit.

Inspiring Words: September 23 {free printable}

It’s time for another free printable. I’ve had so much fun creating and sharing these with you. Printing all of these about and packaging them together would make the sweetest gift for someone. I think I will do it!

I love this quote so much because I am so much of someone who second guesses themselves. I make a decision and then get scared when I think of all the “what it?” questions. I then stall. Then I stop completely. I need to remember that stepping out doesn’t cease to be scary once you do it. But if you dig it up in fear, it won’t ever grow.

Click HERE to download the card. Once you are in Dropbox, right click and choose download. Resize if necessary, print, write, and send! It only takes a few minutes to brighten someone’s day or to give yourself the reminder you need.

And if you missed our previous freebies, you can grab them now!

Top New Features Photoshop Elements 14

The newest version of Photoshop Elements is here and we are all eager to see what’s new.

Photoshop Elements is designed as a consumer level photo editing program, so many of the new features are focused on the photo editing side of things. Each year a new version brings a variety of new features that scrapbookers will appreciate.

In today’s post I’m sharing my top new features in PSE14 for scrapbookers. Take a look through and see if the feature you are wishing for is there.

Auto Haze Removal

Have a foggy, hazy image? Just apply the brand new
Enhance > Auto Haze Removal. I’ve found the results from Auto Haze Removal excellent and super speedy!

For more control you can use
Enhance > Haze Removal…

Even washed out images will benefit from a quick dehaze. I’m sure you’ll find yourself reaching for this command every time you scrap!

Precise Selections using Selection Edges

In the last version the
Refine Selection Brush made extracting and selecting specific parts of photos and supplies a breeze.

In Photoshop Elements 14, there’s now the ability to further refine selections with the selection edge cursor. Selection edge cursor
Photoshop Elements 14 selection edge cursor will appear when you move your mouse over the edge of a selection and you can paint over the edge and Photoshop Elements will do all hard selection work for you. You can see the results in this picture of my daughter Emily’s fine curly hair.

Auto Smart Looks

If you have ever lusted over RadLab or Lightroom, you’ll love the Auto Smart Look options in the Quick Edit mode. With the click of a button you can create a professional look for your photo. Photoshop Elements works out what kind of photo you have open and suggests some looks to make your photo pop.

It’s instant and I’ve found myself reaching for the Quick Edit mode more than ever.

These new edits are just some of the 50+ Quick Edits built in to Photoshop Elements.

New Guided Photo Edits

Need to get a similar look for a group of photos? Don’t worry about copying and pasting adjustment layers, fiddling with settings. There’s an array of new guided photo edits and a new-look interface in PSE 14.

Guided Photo Edits are one of the overlooked features of Photoshop Elements. Most scrapbookers I know head straight to the Expert mode, without realising the shortcuts they posses.

Guided edits combine the power of Photoshop Elements with step by step instructions. In PSE14 there are three new guided edits:

Speed: Easily add some Motion Blur to your photos.

Photomerge Compose: Walks you through the process of extracting an object out of your photo so you can use it in another image.
Resize: Walks you through resizing your photo for the web or for printing at standard sizes.

You can learn more about guided edits
in my Fast Photo fixes class.

Organizer: Face Recognition Hyperdrive

Now Photoshop Elements automatically stacks similar faces together before you even name or tag those faces. Face tagging now take just a fraction of the time!

Photoshop Elements learns and improves its face recognition the more you use it, so face recognition and tagging is a breeze. (And handy for scrapping photos of those elusive family members who seem to escape the camera!)

You can also click on the Named icon and quickly check suggested photos to confirm if the faces Photoshop Elements has recognized are correct.

In the Organizer, a lot has improved. Every version Adobe makes some improvements to the performance and I am covering several of these new features in
my post at Digital Scrapbooking HQ later this week.

See it in Action

I have recorded a demo of these features and more!

What feature are you looking forward to in Photoshop Elements 14?

CREDITS: Tangie Baxter Collage Sheet Workshop #10

started

I have been paper scrapping since I was about twelve or so! Then I got to that stage of my life that I sort of lost interest in and became a collector of scrapbooking supplies, but never did anything with them. Then I came across art journaling in 2003 and fell in love but didn’t make it a priority in my life until much later. In the spring of 2007 I found out about DIGITAL scrapbooking. I can STILL picture me sitting there with a silly grin on my face not believing what I was seeing! It was love at first pixel and I knew it was for me. I immediately bought Photoshop CS2 and cried myself through learning how to use it. I can laugh about it now, but there weren’t many resources on how to use the program for digital scrapbooking back then. By the fall of 2007, I opened my own store and was determined to quit my day job! Somewhere in the fall of 2009 I realized I could combine my love of art journaling with digital and my life has never been the same since then! The last EIGHT years have been some of the most amazing of my life and I’m so grateful each and everyday that I was led down this path in my life and I’m ecstatic for the future.

inspired

I’m really, truly grateful for the creative vibe I’m connected to in the world around me. I feel inspired by everything (as long as I’ve gotten enough sleep!). Pinterest is a great way for me to try and capture some of these ethereal thoughts and feelings into pictures to inspire me again later.

tools

Computer: I’m still working with my same computer, it’s been a long road together so far! It’s an HP 570f, it has a AMD II 1090T 3.20GHZ processor; 16 GB of Ram and a 2TB hard drive with windows 7-64 bit. I also have two HP2711x LED 27 inch Monitors which I adore!

Program: I use Photoshop Creative Cloud, Artrage, 7zip and Renamer by Den4b

Camera: An iPHone 5! I have given up on trying to be a photographer (for now) and just enjoy my life through the lens of the camera phone that goes with me everywhere.

Anything Else: I’ve got four 2TB external hard drives (various brands) that still don’t seem like enough storage..

tipstricks

Don’t be so hard on yourself. This may apply a bit more to art journaling than scrapping but so many times we get so caught up in the end result that we forget that is is the process that really matters. Using our creative energy properly literally heals our bodies, makes us smarter and lowers our stress! Learn to really enjoy the fact that you get to be creative and just enjoy the experience.

favorite

It’s a whole new workshop experience. I wanted to create an environment of learning and excitement. I wanted people to feel my passion for art journaling, see me working a lot more in my journals and get to play with my art work in real time! I wanted to wake up one morning with an awesome idea for a 3 day workshop and we can be working on it that weekend! If I paint something I love in the studio I can run to my office and scan it for you to use. We have an amazing time in the Emporium!
