Supplies: Narrative by One Little Bird Designs

Full disclosure: I will spend National Scrapbooking Day and the whole weekend shopping the sales, downloading and organizing my new goodies. I’ve already got my wishlists started and I’m ready for it!

But, in the lead-up to National Scrapbooking Day, I’ve been a busy scrapper, making page after page. That’s the best way to celebrate – especially while binge watching Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve been having a blast!

I’ve made a bunch of pages, mostly cluster style, and enjoyed the challenge of working with so many layers and resizing things to get it all just so. It’s creative fun! I made them using products that won’t be released until this weekend though so I can’t share them…

Which means that for this post, I set out to make a page that I could share! I came across a photo of my little big boy on the swing that was just calling out to be scrapped. I didn’t want to embellish it or hide it under leaves and stars and ribbons. So I made this super simple page with just a few papers and word art and lots of journaling. The photo is prominent and it makes me smile.

Supplies: Narrative by One Little Bird Designs (past Digi File contribution)

It’s funny that the one page I made to share is so different in style from the other pages I’ve made this week. There are many ways to approach scrapbooking and none of them are right or wrong – it’s all memory keeping and it’s all good. That’s why I love this hobby!

So, whether your style is full of luxurious layers or pared-down minimalist, or something in between, I hope you find the time to celebrate this great hobby of ours by making a page (or two or ten)!

A Big THANK YOU to our APRIL DESIGNERS

I just want to take a few minutes to give a huge thank you to our April designers. Without the designers donating their time and talent, The Daily Digi wouldn’t be able to bring you great products, news, and information.

When it comes down to it, for me, digital scrapbooking is about cherishing my family’s memories. And each of these designers has helped me do that. So from the bottom of my heart, I want to say THANK YOU for your creativity and the way it has helped me capture my family’s special moments.

We had seven amazing designers this month and I created a page with each and every one of their kits.

Name

Hey TDD readers!! I’m Meg…a 38yr old (wow where has time gone??) WAHM living in Georgia. I’ve been designing since 2009 and have called Sweet Shoppe Designs my design home since 2010 🙂

STOREFACEBOOKTWITTERPINTERESTNEWSLETTER

layout

Sadly scrapping has taken a backseat in my life this last year but I’m doing Project Life this year and somehow managing to keep up. I hope to add some digi layouts here and there this year!

started

I started scrapping in 2007. I bought scrap kits to make sigs on a board I was on. I eventually made a layout then discovered a digi home at Sweet Shoppe and have been there since! I started dabbling in designing in 2008 with a couple of collabs with some designer friends. I got pretty serious about it in 2009 (I designed with a friend as a duo then eventually went out on my own) I moved to SSD in October 2010 and am there to stay!

inspired

I am inspired by quite a few things. Since the booming of Pinterest I’ve found ideas in many great messages. It can be a song, video, quote, etc. Pair that inspiration with some awesome colors and a kit is born!

Another inspiration..LIFE in general. My life has been turned upside down the last year and a half and I feel like a lot of my kits lately reflect the space my head is in.

tools

Computer: I use a beautiful iMac..she’s 4 years old and in desperate need of an upgrade but I am still enamored.

Lately I’ve been doing some traveling and designing on a rather old Dell Inspiron laptop that I cleaned off and updated and it’s working beautifully so far.

There’s a new Macbook Pro calling my name though once my “I need a new computer fund” fills up 🙂

Program: Photoshop CS5 on my Imac but I used a trail of Creative Cloud and I see myself moving to that very soon. I love being able to continue working while projects save and to save multiple files at a time.

Illustrator gets opened every once in awhile but I prefer drawing in Photoshop

Camera: Iphone? lol I use my phone for 95% of my photos now. I do have an old Canon Rebel but it doesn’t get brought out much anymore.

Anything Else: I have a bamboo tablet and rely on my Canon scanner/printer occasionally but they are mainly dust collectors

tipstricks

Tips for Scrappers (well and designers!)–Do not force creativity. If you aren’t feeling it put it aside and work on another project. I find when I put something out of my mind I find the inspiration I was lacking in the most unexpected places and times

Tips for Designers–Do a stripe paper first when you design to make sure your colors work well together on paper. That’s saved me many headaches over time once I received that advice.

favorite

Usually my latest product is my favorite.

As I said earlier my designs reflect aspects of my life sometimes and When I Met You is sort of me pouring my feelings out about somebody in kit form.

DesFav

popular

I believe family and getting our memories down is why we all scrap to begin with. A family kit in an appealing neutral palette can never be a bad choice. It’s a little ironic I suppose that I created a family kit for my contribution this month. You can never have too many!

Make Faster Pages with a Template Shape Folder

Make Creating Pages Faster with a Template Shape Folder

Designing my own scrapbook pages is a great creative outlet. When I’m not working with a template, I like the challenge of making a page design work for my photos and the kit I want to use. When I looked over my finished pages, I found that there were some shapes and elements that I was very drawn to using:

  • Rectangles and squares
  • Triangles
  • Circles and half-circles
  • Hexagons
  • Circle and square frames
  • Scallop trim
  • Ribbons
  • Flowers and leaves
  • Buttons
  • Hearts
  • Stars
  • Word art strips
  • Banners
  • Arrows and Chevrons
  • Journal Cards (especially 3×4 size)

So, in order to not start from scratch on every page, I decided to make a “Template Builder” folder and fill it with all of my favourite shapes. Then, when I go to build a page in the future, I can just quickly add shapes from my own shape stash.

These are some of the shapes in my folder:

To make your own shapes, create a new a 12×12 canvas with a transparent background. Draw a shape. In this example, I’m going to use an arrow.

Now get rid of the extra canvas by going to Image>Trim.

Save the file as a PNG to preserve the transparent background. Now it’s ready to be used on your pages!

Here’s a quick template I made using my shapes and then the page I made using it:

Supplies: Sunrise by Kristin Cronin-Barrow

Easy as 1-2-3! I hope this tip helps you to create your own pages, and capture your memories, faster and more enjoyably.
