It’s not often that my children will throw a full blown tantrum while I am holding the camera. I was able to catch a series of photos documenting her over the top tantrum. A side note: she kept peeking at me while I took pictures, to see if I was still paying attention to her 😉

CTRL J is one of my most used shortcuts. It is a keyboard shortcut to duplicate the layer you are currently are on. If you make a selection with the marquee tool, and select CTRL J, it will only duplicate the portion selected.

I just love the colors. I tend to love blue/lime green combo’s, and it just felt complete when I finished it 🙂

I think that it was so popular was due to the color choices. The pop of orange really brought the kit to life.

Framing Paper

Framing Paper

There are some elements that I find trickier to use than others, and photo frames are one of them. I want to try to use them more because some of them are so lovely! I’ve been making an effort to push myself out of my comfort zone lately and work with items and techniques that challenge me. So, this week I took on photo frames.

Keeping in mind that there’s no rule that says that photo frames must be used with pictures, I chose to frame papers. I love the look!

Here are a few recent pages I’ve made with pictures from when my daughter was a baby/toddler:

Supplies: A Beautiful Life: February by Zoe Pearn, Everyday Pocket Doodles 1 by Lauren Grier

Lucky to Have You: For this page, I framed a delicately patterned pink paper that let the “love” word art included in the frame take centre-stage.

Supplies: Butterfly Dreaming by Digilicious Designs

Mady Girl: The postage stamp frame outline was perfect for creating a grid of boldly patterned papers. I saved one spot for journalling.

Supplies: Serenity by Kristin Cronin-Barrow and Studio Basic Designs

My Happy Place: On this page, I did use a frame for a photo, as well as papers. I duplicated the frame 4 times and created a bold visual row across the page. Even though the background is patterned, the black frames are the strongest visual elements on the page.

What elements do you find most challenging to use on your pages?

Six Word Story

Legend says that Ernest Hemingway made a bet that he could make people cry with a six-word story. He won the bet with,

For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never worn.

Now, many people don’t believe that this is a true story, but it’s powerful nonetheless. Six words to tell an entire story.

Brevity is powerful. It’s why social media outlets such as Twitter have such a huge fan base. It’s why editors teach their writers to cut, cut, cut. If we are intentional with our few words, those words can wield great power.

After reading an article about six word stories, it made me think of how I would write my story. Off the top of my head I came up with:

Mom of Six. Tired. Happy.

OR

Hands are full. Heart is fuller.

Clearly, I have some work to do. It’s fun to try, though. I searched around online and found some great six word stories. It’s amazing how powerful (or funny) six words can be.

Born a twin; Graduated only child.

Trying to concentrate. Ooh, a kitty!

Torched the haystack. Found the needle.

The smallest coffins are the heaviest.

Nine month wait. Left hospital alone.

Logged out. Pulled plug. Found life.

Lost in wilderness, he found himself.

Congratulations! Boy or Girl?” “…I’m overweight…”

365 Apples. My annual insurance policy.

“Sorry. Bad hair day. Love, Rapunzel”

Butterfly. Windscreen wipers. Half a butterfly.

Obituary column writer dies. Nobody notices.

Trapped in vinegar. What a pickle!

This got me thinking how this technique could be translated to a scrapbook page. Although I love journaling, there is also something powerful about trying to tell the story with just a few words. I was surprised when a few days later I came across a fairly recent layout I had done. I love that the title — just three words — told the whole story. It made me realize that it really can be done. Rake, Jump, Repeat.

I used my Any Which Way templates from the March Digi Files to create the photo collage.

I can’t wait to intentionally try this technique for my pages and see what happens. What about you? Could you tell a story in six words? How could you work it into a scrapbook page?

Name

My name is Christine and I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland (Australia) with my hubby and 2 young boys. I have been scrapbooking the traditional way (paper) since about 2002, although I’ve probably been doing it in one form or another all my life. I have been using Photoshop for years and made the leap into digital scrapbooking in 2006.

I have always been a paper scrapper, then discovered digital in 2006 just as I had my first bub. A few months later I started designing, and from then on, it’s always seemed like too much digi-scrapping is NEVER enough!

inspired

Everything… music, TV ads, colours, books, magazines, my kids…

tools

Computer: I have a custom built machine from a local computer guy. It runs with Windows 8.1 Pro, 16gb RAM, has 2 solid state hard drives (125gb for most programs & 250gb for Photoshop/CC), 2 x 2TB storage drives.

Program: Adobe Creative Cloud – mostly Photoshop & Illustrator.

Camera: Canon EOS 7D & a nice little Canon point & shoot… however I use my iPhone for everyday snapshots mostly 😉

Anything Else: I use 2 monitors (an Asus 28″ & a Dell 23″), a Wacom Intuos4 tablet, Epson V600 scanner

tipstricks

I carry a little art journal with me everywhere I go because I don’t trust my brain to remember the occasional little flashes of inspiration I have! I then completely plan out my kit while I’m doing something else – like watching TV, watching the kids swim in the pool, or some such activity that allows multi-tasking. Then when I sit down at my computer, I just go for it and my workflow is far more efficient.

favorite

I usually design with quite bright & bold colours, but I really wanted to have a go at a soft wintery kit, and I especially loved the idea of including a snowman. I found it really tough to keep it so ‘light’, but I was so happy with the end result – I literally breathed a sigh of relief when I’d finished it!

This was a project I had been planning for a long time before it came to fruition. I used a broad colour scheme, trying to keep it as nature-based as possible and had an absolute blast putting it all together! The bundle was most popular, I think because each kit coordinated with each other, and the theme is so versatile.

Tech Talk: BLUESMART

We’ve had so much great feedback on our TECH TALK posts that I thought I would continue with them this month. There are so many amazing products available and being imagined! It really blows me away. From self-parking cars to Amazon packages in as little as 30 minutes, the world is changing faster than ever before. I’m not ready to embrace all of technology, but there are some things that just get me excited!

This week’s tech talk is a favorite because of how much my family travels. We’ve moved internationally EIGHT times and we have traveled back and forth between here and Asia countless more. We’ve got the packing thing down pretty well, but we are always on the lookout for ways to make travel (especially with kids) go smoother.

Bluesmart is the world’s first smart carry-on. A digital lock, gps features, built-in scale, and more!

I could go on and on about all the cool features, but the video does a much better job! Here’s to some tech travel!

Name

My name is Amanda Taylor. I live in Memphis, TN with my husband and 2 children (ages 9 and 14). Born and raised in the south, I love hot summers, iced tea, and sweet southern hospitality. I am a caffeine junkie, the dryer is my iron, and to me, Daylight Savings Time is the best holiday on the calendar. I love Photography, it’s what inspires me, yet I have no desire to be a photographer. I would rather just sit and play in Photoshop for the rest of my days. I surprise myself at times when I realize just how addicted to this program I really am. I have recently began teaching Photoshop classes just so I can show others how to really use it to its fullest potential.

layout

What inspired you to create this layout or project?
The photos on my phone are what inspired this layout. After a couple of years now with my kids scattering at the sight of my camera, the phone camera is somehow more acceptable to them and suddenly, I had a huge assortment of great pictures!

What do you love about it?
I love how each of the photos captures a moment we were simply out and about and being us. Even the ones that are posed (the selfies) seem to capture so much essence… it’s the spontaneity, I think. It makes me happy.

Share a tip or anything else you think our readers might enjoy.
Since all of the photos were taken with my phone, they aren’t the best quality and some had a lot of grain. I just tried to embrace it by keeping them small. Making them all that sort of contrast-y black and white seemed to help the grain feel as if it fit right in.

DesignerLO

started

My mother-in-law first introduced me to paper scrapbooking in 2007. I only paper scrapped for about 6 months before craving the versatilty and graphic nature of the digital world. I made a swift and clean transition to digital later that same year. Another 6 months after my entry into the digital realm, I applied for a designer call at Oscraps. When I was chosen, you would have thought I had been elected President. It was that big of a deal to me. More recently, I have entered the world of teaching Photoshop classes at Scrapaneers.com. Being a digital instructor has become my newest passion. It’s probably the most fullfilling thing I’ve ventured into yet in this industry.

inspired

Emotion. Plain and simple. If I am not in a good place emotionally, my designs suffer dramatically. But I have found also it quite inspiring to just sit and browse through dramatic photography. That seems to stir up emotion in me all by itself and most of the time, gets me feeling creative almost instantly.

tools

Computer: I use a (brand new) Dell Inspiron laptop, as my previous laptop just recently crashed due to a big, fat, ugly virus that ate all of my files. 🙁 One of these days, I will have a Mac… maybe when my kids move out and I have lots of extra money. haha!

I now run Windows 8. The new computer came with 8 gigs of RAM and a TB of hard drive space, but I have yet to save one single file to it. I now use Dropbox exclusively for all of my files. I work directly from it and then save directly to it. No more losing years worth of work for me!

Program: I use Photoshop almost exclusively, but do a few things in Illustrator.

Camera: I have a Nikon D60. It’s probably considered a dinosaur at this point, but I refuse to upgrade until I am in a season in life where I can devote real time to learning to use it in a more respectable manner (and not the “point and shoot” approach I currently take. ha!)

Anything Else: I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I’ve always used it for my handwritten word art and doodles. But more recently, my favorite thing to use it for is editing photos. It’s a completely different experience with a tablet… and SO much more fun! The precision it allows you to have is unbelievable compared to a standard mouse or track pad. When I began using it for this purpose, I [quite literally] fell in love with my tablet all over again.

tipstricks

I think my biggest tip would be to learn your program. Besides being AMAZED at how the technology has advanced these days and being blown away by what your program can really do, it saves so much time in the long run when you know it like the back of your hand. Especially if you’re using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. SO many shortcuts and automations available. I use to waste soooooo much time doing things the long way around (the self-taught way). I encourage everyone to set aside some time and really get to know your program… whether it’s through online classes or through Google or Youtube. You won’t be sorry!

favorite

I love the colors and the theme of this kit. Inspired by all the “shiny happy people” I see on Facebook and in my own photos. Seeing happiness is always a joy!

DesFav

popular

I think people just like handwritten words. They seem to be popular for just about every designer who makes them. And it’s so fun because every designer’s handwriting is different so even if 3 designers made a word art pack with the exact same words, they would all be completely different. I designed these word art packs years ago and they are still my best sellers!
