My name is Amanda Taylor. I live in Memphis, TN with my husband and 2 children (ages 9 and 14). Born and raised in the south, I love hot summers, iced tea, and sweet southern hospitality. I am a caffeine junkie, the dryer is my iron, and to me, Daylight Savings Time is the best holiday on the calendar. I love Photography, it’s what inspires me, yet I have no desire to be a photographer. I would rather just sit and play in Photoshop for the rest of my days. I surprise myself at times when I realize just how addicted to this program I really am. I have recently began teaching Photoshop classes just so I can show others how to really use it to its fullest potential.
What inspired you to create this layout or project?
The photos on my phone are what inspired this layout. After a couple of years now with my kids scattering at the sight of my camera, the phone camera is somehow more acceptable to them and suddenly, I had a huge assortment of great pictures!
What do you love about it?
I love how each of the photos captures a moment we were simply out and about and being us. Even the ones that are posed (the selfies) seem to capture so much essence… it’s the spontaneity, I think. It makes me happy.
Share a tip or anything else you think our readers might enjoy.
Since all of the photos were taken with my phone, they aren’t the best quality and some had a lot of grain. I just tried to embrace it by keeping them small. Making them all that sort of contrast-y black and white seemed to help the grain feel as if it fit right in.
My mother-in-law first introduced me to paper scrapbooking in 2007. I only paper scrapped for about 6 months before craving the versatilty and graphic nature of the digital world. I made a swift and clean transition to digital later that same year. Another 6 months after my entry into the digital realm, I applied for a designer call at Oscraps. When I was chosen, you would have thought I had been elected President. It was that big of a deal to me. More recently, I have entered the world of teaching Photoshop classes at Scrapaneers.com. Being a digital instructor has become my newest passion. It’s probably the most fullfilling thing I’ve ventured into yet in this industry.
Emotion. Plain and simple. If I am not in a good place emotionally, my designs suffer dramatically. But I have found also it quite inspiring to just sit and browse through dramatic photography. That seems to stir up emotion in me all by itself and most of the time, gets me feeling creative almost instantly.
Computer: I use a (brand new) Dell Inspiron laptop, as my previous laptop just recently crashed due to a big, fat, ugly virus that ate all of my files. 🙁 One of these days, I will have a Mac… maybe when my kids move out and I have lots of extra money. haha!
I now run Windows 8. The new computer came with 8 gigs of RAM and a TB of hard drive space, but I have yet to save one single file to it. I now use Dropbox exclusively for all of my files. I work directly from it and then save directly to it. No more losing years worth of work for me!
Program: I use Photoshop almost exclusively, but do a few things in Illustrator.
Camera: I have a Nikon D60. It’s probably considered a dinosaur at this point, but I refuse to upgrade until I am in a season in life where I can devote real time to learning to use it in a more respectable manner (and not the “point and shoot” approach I currently take. ha!)
Anything Else: I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I’ve always used it for my handwritten word art and doodles. But more recently, my favorite thing to use it for is editing photos. It’s a completely different experience with a tablet… and SO much more fun! The precision it allows you to have is unbelievable compared to a standard mouse or track pad. When I began using it for this purpose, I [quite literally] fell in love with my tablet all over again.
I think my biggest tip would be to learn your program. Besides being AMAZED at how the technology has advanced these days and being blown away by what your program can really do, it saves so much time in the long run when you know it like the back of your hand. Especially if you’re using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. SO many shortcuts and automations available. I use to waste soooooo much time doing things the long way around (the self-taught way). I encourage everyone to set aside some time and really get to know your program… whether it’s through online classes or through Google or Youtube. You won’t be sorry!
I love the colors and the theme of this kit. Inspired by all the “shiny happy people” I see on Facebook and in my own photos. Seeing happiness is always a joy!
I think people just like handwritten words. They seem to be popular for just about every designer who makes them. And it’s so fun because every designer’s handwriting is different so even if 3 designers made a word art pack with the exact same words, they would all be completely different. I designed these word art packs years ago and they are still my best sellers!
