Perfect Fit

Welcome back to Jennifer Barrett! I simply love Jennifer’s whimsically eclectic, shabby style in her designs! Her products are versatile and so easy and fun to scrap with. It’s so fun to see the unique elements and surprises in each collection. Jennifer does such a great job of including items in a kit that are unexpected. It’s been fun to learn more about Jennifer and her story as a designer in her interview below. Let’s take a closer look at “Perfect Fit” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

My name is Jenn Barrette and I am so excited to be featured here at The Daily Digi! I have been designing digital scrapbooking kits since 2006, and have been proud to call Sweet Shoppe Designs my home since 2010.

I am currently living in Ontario, Canada in the beautiful lakeside city of Kenora with my amazing husband Dave, and my cute but crazy kids Ava and Lilly.

When I am not glued to my computer desk I can be found shopping for random vintage goodies, baking something sweet, listening to bad pop music, or just spending time with my amazing family.

As much as I truly prefer to scrapbook non-themed layouts…I was so happy with how this “event” page turned out! My favorite thing about this page is all the little touches I added; messy paint, doodles, and a few different fonts. Digital scrapbooking is an awesome opportunity to get messy without well…getting messy!

I started collecting paper scrapbooking supplies in 2006 as I was expecting my first child and was excited to document our life with a new baby. I say collecting because I never ended up using any of it. lol A few months later, I bought a scrapbooking magazine for ideas, and inside was a bonus disc for a very simple digital scrapbooking program…and before long I was completely hooked on digital scrapbooking.
My journey to becoming a designer started soon after. I am slighted obsessed with having my photos match the kit I am using and had a hard time finding the perfect match. I started making my own kits in Photoshop to match my daughter’s adorable outfits. I quickly fell in love with designing and started selling my designs at the end of 2006.

Hands down my biggest inspiration is color. I spend hours sometimes just searching for color inspirations and have a secret Pinterest board full of future kit colors. Once I decide on a color scheme for the week either start looking for inspiration for a theme or I just start playing around in Photoshop until a theme starts to develop.

Computer: I use a Windows 7 PC with 12 GB of RAM, to keep up with all the programs I have a bad habit of running all at the same time. I also have a wide screen monitor so I can use the Windows split screen function to surf the web or watch a movie as I design. I am such a multitasker and have trouble “just designing”. I love having a little distraction or two going on around me as I work. Binge watching full season of TV shows well I design makes me happy. lol

Program: I currently use Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 for my designing. For editing my photos I mostly use Lightroom.

Camera: have a trusty old Canon Rebel XS camera, and my favorite lens is my 35mm. Lately I find myself using my iPad mini to take photos when we are out and about.

Anything Else: I also use a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablet for doodly elements and to help with extractions.

I tend to not scrapbook my photos chronologically, so it can be really hard to remember little details from events or day to day life to add personal journaling to my pages. One thing that has really helped me is using some of the great apps and sites out there to keep a daily online journal. I personally use Oh Life ( and they send me an e-mail daily and all I have to do is quickly make a few notes about the day. I can go back to any date that I filled in and see my notes at any time. So, if you find yourself having the same issue, I totally think using these kind of sites/apps is an awesome tip.

I always have such a hard time with this question. lol I think right now my favorite kit is “Wild and Free”. I started out with a general idea of “free spirit” type theme with a bit of a bright summery twist. I always try to create kits that have a variety of uses, so I pictured it being great for summer teenage adventure photos, family trips to the zoo, as well as “all about me” type pages.

My best selling product is my Get Real: Drop Shadow Styles. I actually use them for all of my layouts. I think they have been so popular because they appeal to new and seasoned scrappers alike. They take the guess work out for newbies, and they are a great starting point if you someone that likes to play around more with their shadow work as well.
