Fuss Free

I’m so thrilled to welcome back Cheryl of Fiddle Dee Dee Designs to The Digi Files this month! I LOVE Cheryl’s great ability to create clusters and layers on her templates! She makes it so easy for those of us that have a hard time scrapping that way! I really enjoyed visiting with Cheryl for the Digest episode and hear about how her documenting has changed over the past few month. Cheryl is a digital scrapbooker as much as she is a designer! My name is Cheryl Ashcraft and I’m a native Floridian living in Northwest Florida on the Gulf Coast. My husband Jay and I have been married for twenty years. We have two children ~ Olivia will be starting her senior year and Daniel will be starting fourth grade in the fall. I’m sure some of you know that bone crushing feeling of a child leaving home, and that’s what I’ve been experiencing recently. I know I’ve only got about a year left before Olivia starts making decisions about college and possibly moving away from home. I’ve always taken pictures and recorded memories, but I really feel a huge push to do more with my children and take even more pictures, but with my focus being on small things, like the way their hands look when holding a book, like the curve of their ear while they listen to music on their headphones, or the way our legs look smashed against each other when we’re snuggled on the couch. Never has my hobby and passion and employment been so important to me as now! When I’m not taking pictures, scrapbooking, or designing templates, you’ll find me tending to my home. I love to decorate and keep a quiet and tranquil space for us to have as a retreat. This year I’ve been exploring other sides of my artistry, so I’ve been doing more pen and ink drawings, and have started experimenting with watercolors. I love to read so you’ll usually find me on my phone or Kindle or with an old school book, and every once in a while I’ll still break out my cross stitching.

We are so blessed to leave near the most amazing beaches, and when we can, we head out for even short afternoon trips. We ditch our flip flops in a pile and relax, play in the sand and surf, and just enjoy the beauty around us. I love the photos on this layout ~ it’s what I see when I’m sitting in my beach chair ~ and I love all the painty goodness on the background of this page as well.

I started paper scrapbooking in 1996 when I was pregnant with my daughter Olivia. My mother purchased an 8.5 x 11 album kit for me, and I made some really, ahem, unusual color and pattern choices in those first pages. I moved to the 12 x 12 layout size a couple of years after I started. I ended up switching to digital scrapbooking after I read a tutorial about doing a circular photo collage in PSE. I ordered PSE, followed the tutorial and was hooked. I loved being able to customize my photo sizes instead of having to rely on the standard 4 x 6 photos I always got from my photos. The tutorial ended up leading me to some digital scrapbooking websites that I started exploring. My son was very young at the time and into everything, so paper scrapbooking was a chore. I would have to bring everything out and then put it all back in one session. It had gotten to the point that I just didn’t want to scrapbook anymore. When I realized that I could use PSE to scrapbook, I was delighted! I started making digital layouts in August 2007. I started converting my layouts to templates in February 2010 and began selling my templates at Scrap Orchard in July 2011. I love being able to “work” at something that is a hobby and a passion!

Everything inspires me to create. It’s cliche, I know, but honestly, sometimes it’s as simple as looking at my cat curled up on the sofa near my desk, and I get a warm fuzzy feeling, and I just want to make something! If my templates aren’t converted from my layouts, I’m inspired to create them by looking at ads, billboards, websites, architecture, etc.

I’ve shared my tip before that templates should be a starting point, and that if your finished layout ends up looking nothing like the template you started with, that’s totally OK! On the opposite side of that, it’s absolutely fine if your layout looks exactly like the template. We all have limited time these days, and if using a template lets you make something beautiful with your precious photos and stories on it, it doesn’t matter how you got there! On a more technical tip level, one of my favorite shortcuts to use when I’m using my templates is to press the ALT key and then CLICK on the element and drag it away to duplicate it. It works wonderfully when you need a cluster of leaves or flowers!

I absolutely love my Fuss Free: Drip Drop series of templates. I’m a bit obsessed with paint these days, and I love the look of the paint drops on the background of the templates. I love that there is a lot going on with the templates with the clustering, but that there is also plenty of space on the layout as well.

Right now, my most popular products are my Fuss Free: Torn series of templates. The templates were inspired by an old photograph that had been torn and taped back together. I thought it was an interesting look and one that you don’t always see because it’s messy and imperfect. I think the templates are popular because of the custom shadows as well as the dimensional, “touchable” look of the finished layout.
