Sweet Dreams

I’m excited to welcome back Megan Turnidge to The Digi Files this month! I’ve been a fan of Megan’s since she very first started designing. I think the reason I fell in love with her designs (and still love them today) are the bright, fun colors she uses; the great patterned papers that are easy to layer and scrap with, and the great overall look of her kits! I really had fun visiting with Megan and learning about her, how she became a designer, and some great tips she has for digital scrappers! Listen below (on the site),

Let’s take a closer look at “Sweet Dreams” that is included in

I’m Megan (pronounced “Meeegan”) and I am a 28-year-old work-at-home mommy and wife. I’ve got 2 darling kids (one girl and one boy) and they are my inspiration! I’m a very creative person – and not just with designing and scrapping. I have a passion for photography. I love to craft and create new things. I’m usually the one bringing the handmade burp cloths to the baby showers. In the past two years, I’ve picked up a passion for making yummy things in the kitchen and I have tried countless new recipes from Pinterest in the last year. I just love making stuff – on the computer, at the sewing machine, with my crochet hooks, or in the kitchen! When I’m not busy being a mom or getting creative, I love to read mystery novels, browse Pinterest, and watch lots of Netflix.

I love this cute kid, so it’s easy to love this page. I’ve barely scrapped 5 pages in the last year and a half, so I was excited to get this one done with one of my own kits.

I was a paper scrapper as a pre-teen and teenager. Please don’t ask me to show you any of those pages. They’re pretty awful! I made my first scrapbook for a church project as a 12-year-old. After I married my husband, I dropped $100 at the scrapbook store to get started on my wedding scrapbook. About 2 weeks later, I needed more supplies and couldn’t afford it, so I knew I needed to give the digital scrapping a try.

My husband gave me Photoshop Elements for Christmas and I slowly started collecting (read: hoarding) digital freebies. It wasn’t until I became pregnant with my daughter that I actually started digital scrapping. In fact, I was so obsessed that I started scrapping quick pages for myself so I could add in baby photos once she was born.

I decided one day in the fall of 2008 – about a year and a half after I started digi scrapping – that I wanted to try my hand at design. I sold my designs at Elemental Scraps and in May of 2009, I decided to push myself and took part in the So You Think You Can Design contest at Digi Scrap Addicts. I made it to the last round and was invited to join the team at Scrap Orchard and I was home! I took a little 2 year break from designing, had a baby boy, and decided to come back to designing when he was about 10 months old.

Inspiration can strike in the most random of places. I have drawn inspiration from clothes, catalogs, TV shows, fabric, music… or even just a really great color palette.

Computer: I have a 27″ iMac with 16GB RAM and a 3TB hard drive.

Program: Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Illustrator CC

Camera: I have the Canon 5D Mark II and a single lens – the Canon 50mm f/1.4.

Anything Else: Wacom Bamboo tablet, a wide format printer, and a Silhouette Cameo.

I think what’s been most useful for me in the past when I went to print my scrapbook pages, was to be really organized. If you’re not in the habit of including dates in your file names, start adding them and it will make printing books less of a headache. I keep layouts in folders by year and name them like so: year_month_day_layouttitle.jpg (ex. 2014_02_23_lovethisgirl.jpg). Then your layouts will stay sorted by date and even if you forget to put the date on the layout itself, you’ll always know

Valentine’s Day kits are my favorite! I am always super inspired when creating a lovey dovey themed kit. I love the soft mint, pink, and kraft against the pops of red.

I think Incredible You really appealed to many of my customers because the superhero theme is fun and because it has a girly twist… which I don’t see very often in superhero kits. I was inspired to create this kit because as a toddler, my daughter LOVED superheroes. The first time I let her pick out her own Halloween costume, she picked Batman (really, it was a Batgirl costume, but she insisted she was BatMAN and not Batgirl). Now my daughter is really into princesses, but I want her to always remember that she can always be her own hero.
