I would like to welcome for the FIRST time to The Digi Files Meg of Our Misadventures! Meg truly has a fun template design style with something for everyone! I learned so much by visiting with Meg in her episode of the Digest and was truly inspired by her ‘getting healthy’ journey documunting. It was also fun to get to know more about her and how she decided to design templates. You can listen below (on the site),

I’m Meg, I’m in my mid-twenties and living in Central California with my husband and our furry-babies. I’m the type of person who when they find they like to do something, they totally embrace it… so I have a LOT of hobbies and interests! Mostly, I love being active… traveling, hiking, running… and I love to make things! I’m also a tea addict, so much so that I blog about tea and whiskey with two of my best friends.
I work from home designing, running our small business, and working as a Virtual Assistant to other small businesses. I actually majored in Deaf Education, but I ended up hating the politics of the field and decided to go back to my love of web and graphic designing, and now digiscrap designing!
We had a designer drop out from hosting one of the Get Real Challenges at Real Life Scrapped, so I stepped in last minute with a template set inspired by my word for this year — “Forward.” It’s one of my favorite sets yet, I’m in love with the big triangular pieces!
My page is about one of my reasons for picking the word “Forward” — my fitness. I went undiagnosed with Celiac Disease for all of my adult life, causing my health to disintegrate. Now that we know I’m a celiac, I’m focused on regaining my health and fitness! I try to scrap about this particular journey as much as I can, for accountability!
Growing up, I totally sucked at making almost anything with paper. I did amazing History Day research projects, but always failed at making attractive displays… I just couldn’t get the hang of cutting out the paper mats! I did love making collages for my binders in middle school, with cut outs from Seventeen Magazine. At least those looked good with a bit of mess!
I still wanted to express myself through art though, so when I received Corel’s painting software as a gift one year… I was hooked. I eventually progressed to PSP and then PS, and got into web designing too! One day in college when I was looking for some design inspiration for a website, I stumbled on the Shabby Princess and the rest was history!
A couple years after I started digiscrapping, I decided to start kit designing. I ended up retiring from kit designing at the end of 2012, but found myself still designing templates in 2013, like an addict. I didn’t feel right giving them away as freebies, so I decided I would apply to stores again once I had a stockpile of products. Luckily, Vicki at Oscraps took me in!
Since I’m a wreck when it comes to working with paper, I realllllllly love browsing paper scrapping galleries. Sometimes I’ll like how a paper page has stitching down one side of a photo, and then how another page has layered paper strips on one edge of the layout. I’ll take those two features and see if I can make a digi page with them, and eventually a new template set!
I also get inspired by things I see in real life, it kind of drives my husband and friends nuts when I have to stop what I’m doing to record my moment of inspiration!
Computer: I have a 13″ Macbook Pro running OSx Mavericks, but I hook it up to a 24″ monitor in my office for most of my designing. My husband keeps saying he wants to get me a tricked out Mac, so I can keep the laptop for fun, but he has yet to do that 😉
Program: For designing templates, I use CS5… I decided to stick with CS5 instead of upgrading to CS6/CC because there seems to be some compatibility issues when it comes to saving PSDs for older versions to open. Plus, I stick to using Lightroom for processing my photos… so I don’t really miss the features CS6 has. I use Evernote to record my inspiration and progress when designing, plus it helps organize everything else in my life!
Camera: I honestly like using my iPhone 5 the most for documenting the everyday, but I do have a Canon Rebel T3i for when something special is happening. I’m a total camera geek, so I also have a few vintage TLRs and SLRs packed away 😉
Anything Else: I had the original Kindle Fire, now I have the Kindle Fire HD… but I think my next tablet will be a regular Android. I don’t care for the limitations of the Fire’s version of Android, but I do love having a tablet!
I’m a huge fan of semi-transparent washi tape, I include it all the time in my templates. But, sometimes a kit doesn’t include tape in the right size to fit the design of my page. So, I just clip paper from that kit to the tape semi-transparent shape in the template! Since the paper is clipping to the shape in the template, there’s no need to worry about messing with the shadow like you would with regular semi-transparent tape!
Another trick is — don’t let yourself get wrapped up in trying to follow any preconceived notions about how you *should* scrap. Be it a Project Life album or your average layout — don’t forget that you scrap for you and your family, not for the gallery comments! So scrap what comes to you, how it comes to you. Don’t worry about clustering, or having the perfect photos… just scrap! I don’t have kids, and I work from home — so I’m practically a hermit — but I still manage to find something to scrap about!
“Better Together” was actually one of my least favorite products when I originally designed it… so it sat on my hard drive for a few months. When I was cleaning up my folders, I fell in love with it all over again and couldn’t wait to release it!
I love the way the pages are divided in two, but in a way that joins more than it divides, bringing home the idea of “Better Together.” I also love all the little layered paper pieces.
This set of basic word strips was inspired by my struggle to get and stay fit, to improve my overall well being. I always struggle with finding themed kits for whatever I want to scrap about, so I decided to make themed word strip sets to use with whatever kit I wanted.
Even though I have another set that’s everyday living theme, this set is my most popular by far! It still outsells the others, even though we’re past the time of New Year’s Resolutions! I guess that means digiscrappers are motivated to get fit 😉
