Republic Wireless

(I am no way affiliated with Republic Wireless nor are any links affiliate links. I am just a happy customer and I like to share my finds with others).

Well, we’re back in the States now (after living in Indonesia since 2008) and that means that it is time to get a phone. After enjoying some of the benefits of having a smartphone this past year (check out my article Late to The Smartphone Party), I had some decisions to make.

I wasn’t sure what we wanted to do. We don’t know how long we will be in the States and I really didn’t want to be stuck in a phone contract, nor did I want to pay the crazy high amounts that people were telling me they spent on their cell phone plans. I also had the added issue that where we are living gets dodgy service at best from most carriers.

What to do?

I was talking with a friend and she mentioned Republic Wireless. And I am so glad she did.

Here are the basics:

Republic Wireless realizes that most people spend the majority of their time at home or at work, where they have constant Wi-Fi. So, they created a system that when you have access toW Wi-Fi, your calls, text, and data all come through your internet. When you are out of Wi-Fi range, your calls, text, and data switch to cellular service.

And what that means for the customer is SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS.

You have four different plans to choose from, and they are all CONTRACT FREE. Also, you can change your plan up to two times a month. So, if your needs change, your plan can too.

There is no contract, but you do have to purchase your phone up front. Currently, they have two phones to choose from:

I went with the Moto X and I have to say that I love it. Here are a few things I am smitten with in my first few weeks:

1. The forward facing camera boasts10mp (rear facing is 2mp)

2. With a quick double shake of the wrist, the camera opens, even from a sleeping phone.

3. Touchless controls. I can talk to the phone (using the code words, “OK Google Now” and ask my phone to do all sorts of things…silence, read my texts, set alarms, send an email, start navigation, and more.

4. Auto back-up of all my photos (they automatically are added to my Google Drive so that I have access to them from anywhere.

As for the service itself, I have had no complaints. Both the Wi-Fi and cell connections have been great and there have been no gaps in service as I switch from one to another (like when I am pulling out of the driveway and the Wi-Fi drops and the cell picks up). The navigation works great (which is wonderful since I am new to our area and don’t always know where I am going!) Calls have been clear. Texts go through.

And what’s not to love about spending $25 a month for unlimited calls, text, and data?

And now, to the real reason I need a smartphone…the camera. Other than getting used to the weird orientation (they’re super long), I am really pleased with my photos. I have a number of settings I can control in-camera (including touch focusing). Remember, I have the Moto X, so quality will differ if you choose the Moto G.

So have you heard of Republic Wireless? Would you give up your iPhone to have a great phone and service plan for $25 (or less) a month?

Making Memories: NO MANNERS MEAL

This is my children’s favorite family activity…by far! They love it so much that I included it in my book, More Than a Movie: 50 Ideas for Fun and Frugal Family Nights.

It’s a once or twice a year thing and they beg and plead and wait and beg and plead and wait some more. And then it comes…

The No Manners Meal

And they giggle and squeal and are so giddy they can’t think.

That’s right…an entire meal where the expectation is that they have

It started back in 2007. My daughter, who was then four, and I were making pancakes. I was getting silly and started making long and skinny snake-like pancakes.

And then, on a total whim (you know, this was pre-Pinterest where creativity had to come from within!), I said,

“You know what, Sweetie? This is a No Manners Meal!”

And I grabbed a pancake with my hands and shoved it in my mouth. I took a pancake off of her plate. I talked with my mouth full and she just giggled with glee.

Because it’s so much fun.

And today, more than seven years later, the kids all still love it. To be honest, it’s been a while…maybe a whole year. I think I know what we are doing for dinner tomorrow!

This activity definitely works best in a family that has set expectations for manners and the kids usually follow them. If you are still in the manners training phase, it might not work as well. Because our children are usually very good about putting their napkins on their lap, holding their fork correctly, chewing with their mouths closed, and asking to “Please pass _____________”, getting a chance to loosen up and have fun is great for us all. Because the kids know what manners are, they know how to break them.

While we let the kids talk with their mouth full, sit on the table, grab food off of other plates, etc., we do have a few rules that they must follow if they want to participate:

1. No name calling. We have a zero-tolerance policy in our home for name calling or teasing. Even in “fun”, people can get hurt. We want our home to be the safest place our children know (physically AND emotionally) and therefore, name calling is beyond the bounds of having no manners. We have not and will not allow anyone to call names (we as parents don’t do it all…even things like “slow poke” or “clumsy.”)

2. We can’t be mean. This activity is supposed to be fun and in jest. There is no being mean to people. Each family has to assess the maturity of their kids and whether they can draw the line between having fun and being mean.

3. If someone doesn’t want to participate, they may stop at any time, and the others must respect that. The uninterested individual may leave the table to avoid having a pancake thrown in his face.

4. Be careful about what you choose to serve for this meal. We usually have pancakes or French toast. I am not sure I want want to try this with fried chicken and mashed potatoes!

5 Take the opportunity now, because tomorrow it’s back to please, thank you, using silverware, and keeping your mouth closed.

And here is one of our memories scrapped. As always, a quick and easy page using one of my templates and a kit by Meg Mullens and Heather Roselli at Sweet Shoppe Designs.

If you are new to digital scrapbooking and want to learn more, check out our WATCH ME SCRAP class! In this self-paced video-based class, I will teach you EVERYTHING you need to get started in digital scrapbooking, even if you don’t have a program! I made learning about digital scrapbooking easy and fun!

So how about it? Is your family up for a No Manners Meal?

Easy “All About Me” Pages

Easy All About Me Pages

I keep a separate album for my All About Me pages. These pages are a chance to document thoughts about my daily life, either on current events or from before I had children. My 8 year old daughter loves to flip through these pages and ask about them. And I love chatting with her about my scrapbooking!

Sometimes my AAM pages capture Big Memories — pages documenting things like my graduation from university, our engagement story, stories about trips I went on and our wedding.

But sometimes, I just want to scrapbook a little thought. And it turns out that those are some of my favourite pages! I never feel like I have “wasted” a page on something little. Even if the thoughts or memories are about little things, I think there is value in having my kids read them and, of course, I greatly enjoy the scrapbooking process.

Here are a few pages of little things about myself that I have added to my scrapbook album:

Favourite TV Shows

Catching Up on Shows

Taking Macro Flower Photos

Petal Perfect

Random Thoughts About Home

Happy Place

Tea Time!

One thing I’ve noticed is that I’m often inspired to do these little memory pages when I have a themed kit or word art that sparks my interest. I think that because the kits often inspired these pages, they were quick and enjoyable to make. I didn’t spend hours documenting a big event or trying to preserve a factual account of something that happened. These pages just capture a few little thing that I liked at the time I made the pages.

Do you include little memories like these in your scrapbooking?

Change a Color in a Photo

Have you even wanted to change the color of something your photo?

In Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CC/CS there’s a tool to do just that!

Stacked along with the brush tool in Photoshop is the little known color replacement tool. This tool will take your currently selected foreground color and apply it to your photo as you brush over it.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Choose the color your want to apply to your photo by double clicking on the foreground color swatch foreground-color-swatch
  2. Select the Brush tool brush-tool
  3. Then, from the Tool options (or the fly-out menu in PS or PSE10 and earlier), select the Color Replacement tool Color-Replacement-tool
  4. Adjust the brush size (using the [ and ] keys or the Size slider)
  5. Paint over the areas of colour you want to replace

If you have a fairly good contrast in your image, you won’t need to do much more than just paint over it!

If you find the color isn’t replaced at the edges, just increase the Tolerance value a little. This will allow the Color Replacement Tool to affect a wider range of colors. If you want to be more precise, you can always use a selection tool to select the area to get more accurate results.

The Color Replacement tool uses blend modes to adjust the color, so selecting different modes will give you different results.

In the image below I’ve replaced the mustard shirt Edward is wearing with a forest green color. As you can see, the different modes give different results.

The tool has several modes (which are Color, Hue, Saturation and Luminosity), that refer to the mathematical calculations Photoshop uses to change the colors.

Luckily for us, we don’t have to know all the details of the maths behind these blending modes. A quick experiment (and a click of the undo button!) will help us discover which mode works best for our subject.

Why would I replace a color?

Now that you know how to replace a color, you may be wondering how you would use it.

Although you could go ahead and change the color of your clothes to suit a kit you want to use, there are some more practical uses too.

Personally, I tend to replace colors when the original color is so eye-catching that it stands out like a sore thumb.

In this picture of my daughter, my husband’s football t-shirt has a bright yellow in the team logo that I just can’t ignore. A quick color replacement in saturation mode takes care of that.

Have you ever tried using the color replacement tool?

I’m Kim Lichtfuss from a little town in Southwestern Wisconsin. My ‘partner in crime’ (so to speak!) is Eric, and together we go on adventures in our area – there is always something to see, somewhere to go! Eric loves to take photo’s of everything . . . and I get most of my palettes from those images. I love to work with color! When I’m not designing you can find me in my garden spots, crafting, cooking, reading – and listening to my favorite tunes from the ’70’s.

I started making cards this past fall – and fell in love with the possibilities! Using recycled cardstock, old fabric and lace pieces and a few things printed out from my own products makes for some wonderful one of a kind cards! I like “original” and “one of a kind” things – so making my own cards was a fun project, and something I continue to do. All you need are a few supplies (Mod Podge will be your best friend!) a little time, tossed with some creativity and imagination!

I ‘found’ digital scrapbooking while searching the net for images/inspiration for some web based projects Eric and I were working on back in 2008. I began exploring the possibilities, and although jumping from 72 dpi to 300 dpi was a new experience (who needed files this big??? lol), I kept at it. I can’t even begin to tell you (nor do I want to!) about all the mistakes/learning processes I went through over the years! I joined a few Creative Teams to gain some experience with working with products….to see how things ‘flow’ and work together. This was an invaluable experience! I have been a memory keeper for what seems like forever – starting with spiral notebooks back in high school that I journaled and doodled in, then going full force when my husband died in 1986. I needed a way to keep his memory alive for our kids – who were so very young then (10, 3, 2 and 6 weeks) and would never have a chance to know their father.

Color, music and everyday surroundings! I draw inspiration from photo’s, a book I’m reading or something as simple as a single image on Pinterest.

Computer: Gateway PC , 1.5 TB overall memory, 7 GB Ram, 64 bit, Windows 7 OS. Just one monitor, but its a big old thing – 27″ flatscreen.

Program: I’m still very “old school”. I started with Paint Shop Pro v 9.1, and still use it everyday (although I do have every version after that up to v. 14). It’s a very powerful design tool, and I know it inside and out! I did cave in, however, when I saw all those ‘oh so cool’ styles for Photoshop – and purchased PSE (now version 11). I only use that program for styles/actions and saving templates to tiff formats.

Camera: Just a plain old Kodak point and shoot, but we are currently drooling over a very cool Nikon with some awesome features at the moment…

Anything Else: I have a Bamboo tablet that I use for drawing, and also use Xara Design Pro for drawing.

The best tip I can give anyone is to learn your program – the best you can! There are so many tutorials out there for new ways to do things, new tricks, new addon’s, you name it. Keep current!

Butterfly Kisses is very special to my team and I for different reasons – it came to be when several on my team were going through some very serious personal issues – and was meant to be used to help express the feelings involved with those issues. I choose the colors from a gorgeous sunset image I had on hand – that worked well to help express feelings and emotions. The layouts that came from that kit were awesome…and it will always be one of my favorite products.

Scrap Therapy came to be after a discussion with my Creative Team about how and why we like to create – and how therapeutic it can be. Scrapping can be a great stress reliever! So I put the collection together, using colors my team enjoys – and Scrap Therapy was born. It’s an all-time favorite just because its very versatile, is filled with color and fun elements.
