Welcome to Lahni of Queen Wild Scraps! This her first time contributing to The Digi Files. Lahni does such a great job with her themed kits and it was so fun to visit with her and learn about what inspired some of these themes and kits. We also talked about her life, how she got started in digital scrapbooking and design, and her toolbox. You can listen below (on the site), download here, or subscribe in iTunes:

Let’s take a closer look at “Alchemy” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

My name is Lahni Rawlings and I live in a town just outside of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. My husband and I have been married for 13 years and we have 4 children (11, 7, 4, and 1). Besides digital scrapbooking, I love reading and watching trashy TV. I used to work as a high school chemistry teacher and hope to go back to it one day when all my kids are in school.

This layout was inspired by the photo. My sister-in-law took this photo while my husband was in the ICU after being electrocuted at work. Even though he’s fine now and hasn’t suffered any lasting consequences, it’s still be a tough time for me. I was hoping that by scrapping some of the photos I would be able to start the healing process. This photo was the only one I could even bear to think about creating journaling for so it’s the one I used!

SUPPLIES: Hard Things by Queen Wild Scraps.

I started paper scrapping when I was about 16 or 17. My cool older cousin came to live with us and she got my mom, my sister, and I all hooked. I scrapped on and off until after I had my second child I just gave up. It was just too much work to get it all out and then put it all away again because I didn’t have a dedicated crafting area. I really wanted to try digital but I just didn’t have any luck figuring out how to do it! After my third was born, I just decided that I was going to google and google until I found some information about digital scrapbooking. By that time it wasn’t hard to find information at all and within the week I was completely hooked. It was only a few months later that I decided to try my hand at designing templates and as luck would have it a designer I knew was opening a store. I was one of the first designers to join her there and I’ve been there ever since. I finally got up the courage to start designing kits a few months later and the rest is history!

I’m not really sure. Sometimes it can be a photo of one of my kids, sometimes it’s a customer request. Sometimes just the things that are going on around me will inspire a kit.

Computer: I have a 21.5″ iMac running Mavericks. I only have one monitor but I’m not sure I could handle having more than that! I have 8GB of RAM which is definitely not enough but was pretty much all I could afford. I was able to upgrade the RAM myself in my Macbook but I’ve heard it’s pretty much impossible to do that in the iMac. If anyone knows how I’d love to learn!

Program: I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CC.

Camera: I have a Nikon D50 which desperately needs a new lens so I mostly just end up using my iPhone to take photos.

Anything Else: I also have a medium sized wacom tablet.

Keyboard shortcuts. I save so much time just by using keyboard shortcuts. One of my favourites is using the option/alt key to duplicate layers. When I’m clustering, I just add the flowers or leaves I want to use to the layout once and instead of dragging them onto the layout multiple times I just make sure the element I want to duplicate is selected, hold down the option key and then drag the flower or leaf to a new location. It saves so much time!

Book Nerd. I love this kit. It was inspired by my love of reading. It’s a kit I had planned to do right from the day I started designing. I kept putting it off because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to create my vision for the kit. I’m glad I did because I love it and I’m pretty sure if I had done it back in the beginning I wouldn’t like it very much! I chose the colours by searching for images of books that appealed to me. One of them was of a stack of blue and green books wrapped in brown twine and that is how I chose the colours!

Dazzling December. This kit was the final kit in a series I did for each of the months intended to be used for Project 52/365 layouts. I wanted it to be lots of white and creams with just pops of red and green. Again I found a photo of a Christmas table setting that was all white and just pulled a few of the white from there. To be honest I’m not sure why it’s so popular. Sometimes I have kits that I love and they totally bomb and then I have others that I’m not so sure about (like this one) and they just sell like hotcakes!
