A New Start for a New Year

I am so excited to be welcoming Jen C Designs to The Digi Files this month! I love Jen’s designs that have are modern with a shabby edge. She has some really fun themes and color combinations. It was so much fun for me to visit with Jen about her life as a Canadian living in Ireland, how she started digi scrapping and designing and her contribution to The Digi Files this month. I know you will enjoy hearing her (and her fun accent) in the Digest:

Let’s take a closer look at “New Start New Year” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. My name is Jen – but I design under the name Jen C Designs. I live in Belfast with my husband and our two kids. I started designing 3 and a half years ago while we were still living in Canada. When I’m not designing you can find me, playing with the kids, at work, or just generally making memories! I currently sell at my own personal store, Pickleberry Pop and Gotta Pixel – and love it!

I created this layout as a memory of a fabulous day we spent at the Halloween Carnival last year. My kids loved it! Even though the weather was cold, they had a great time on the rides and with the carnival games!

I started as a paper scrapbooker when I was a child. I always loved taking photos, collecting them into albums and creating keepsakes. In 2010, I went digital because with two small children, time to be creative was at a premium! Never mind the fact that most children make enough mess, it was hard to have my hobby be a messy event as well! At the same time I was creating blogs for friends of mine and literally stumbled into digital scrapbooking websites! I was immediately hooked and haven’t turned back! I am very thankful to the owners of the two sites I work at – Pickleberry Pop (Faye) and Gotta Pixel (Stacy). These ladies have been fabulous inspirations and tremendous mentors to me. This industry is incredibly creative and competitive. I am deeply grateful for all they have taught me.

I love looking at magazines, Pinterest pages, colour swatches, anything! Many times on of my creative team members will have a photo they want to scrap with and so I create a scrap kit around it! Obviously with some of my stores, we have coordinating product events – so in those situations, it’s all about being inspired by the colour first and then the theme comes from it.

Computer: I’m a Mac girl through and through. I have a Mac Book Pro and it’s my third baby!
Program: I use Adobe CS 5 – Photoshop and Illustrator mostly!
Camera: I have a regular and old point and shoot camera. The camera does what it needs to for me – and to dress photos up, there are loads of resources available to produce actions and special effects for your memories.
Anything Else: I use a Wacom tablet – this is one area I’m desperate to upgrade soon! I love being able to draw and extract with a tablet – it’s much easier than with a tracker pad (I don’t use a mouse with my Mac).
My number one tip would be to not compare yourself to other designers, photographers or scrappers. By all means, look for inspiration from others – but never feel intimidated by what others do.

My Story January was my first in a whole series of collections I created in 2013. Essentially, I wanted to help people tell their own story throughout the year. So many kits are very themey. And while, there are themed pieces in each month, my goal was to create a versatile palette that would work across geographic boundaries.
One More Day seems to have really struck a powerful chord with my fans. It was created at a time when things weren’t the greatest. It was inspired by the need to push on just one more day when things get tough. Now, the colours themselves were for a coordinating palettes event, but they really spoke to me and encouraged me to design about the difficult times in life.
