Getting to Know Mr. Awesome

Shawna’s designs get used quite frequently by all of us at The Daily Digi. It seems many of us have a soft spot for her kits.  Shawna is a talented designer that can rock a boy kit as well as those for girls.  On of my favorite things about Shawna’s designs are her fun word art and great uses of type!  There are always some creative sayings in her kits that bring a smile to my face.   It’s great to have Shawna back with us in The Digi Files this month.  Let’s take a closer look at “Mister Awesome” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! Hi there! My name is Shawna Clingerman. I am a mom of 4 awesome boys – who are ALL in school for the first time this year! My oldest is 13 and I have a 10, a 9 and a 5 year old. I have been a stay at home mom for 13 years now, so this is a big change for us – and one I think we are all really ready for. It is the end of an era and a whole new chapter for our family, I’m excited though, to see what comes next. I am looking forward to have the time to grow my business and designing MORE during my quiet time while the kids are at school. My husband, George (I just call him “g”), is the best ever. He is a computer geek just like me: a software developer for mobile apps by day, and a game programmer by night. He has always been a huge supporter of my design work, even if it means he has to help fold the laundry or wrangle the boys. We have been living in Vancouver, Washington, happily nestled in suburbia since our oldest was born and we just purchased our dream home in the form of a huge fixer upper. With the boys and the house and the school and the working, our life is a bit crazy, but it is good kind of crazy so I can’t complain!

I rarely find the time to scrapbook like I used to, but every once in a while something hits me and I just need to scrap it! I made this layout several months ago while we were waiting to hear if the offer we made on our short sale home was approved, I was obsessing and it just felt good to get it out there! Eventually, we DID get the house, and it was totally worth the wait! I will always treasure this layout about our hopes and dreams for this house and I’m so glad I took the time to put it together.

DIY: Collection by Kristin Cronin-Barrow & Shawna Clingerman

I only paper scrapped for a little bit before I got into digital – I was so drawn to the fact that I could do it on my computer with out the mess, and, lets be honest, the freebies pulled me in as well!! As I got more into scrapping, I started drawing out little swirlies on paper and scanning them in, until one day (in 2006) my hubby came home and surprised me with a tablet! It wasn’t long before I was making more than just swirlies and eventually started to put together papers and elements. As a scrapper I had the awesome opportunity to be on the site ct for Sweet Shoppe Designs when the doors opened, so it seemed like the obvious choice to aim for a spot there as a designer. I love the Sweet Shoppe and 7 years later, selling there almost just feels like a part of who I am!

What DOESN’T inspire me to create?? LOL!! I love finding quotes/sayings/songs that kick off a kit idea, sometimes browsing around a color scheme will call to me (thank you Pinterest!). My favorite thing to be inspired by though, is a concept or idea that I personally would like to have a kit for – kinda funny considering I don’t scrap very often, but when I think about it, my favorite kits are often spurred by things that are happening in my own life.

Computer: I’m a windows girl! Although I have Windows 7 right now and I am avoiding moving up to 8 at all costs – I know 8 is awesome in its own way, but I’ve never loved an operating system before like I love Windows 7! I have a hot pink dell laptop (gotta get my pink on in this house filled with boys!) I honestly don’t know how much RAM it has, enough that my husband gave his stamp of approval though! We usually shop the Dell outlet so that I can get an upgrade every few years. I love to work with an external monitor when I can – in our new house there are enough bedrooms that I get a room all to myself to use as a studio so my set up is evolving some, it is very exciting to have my own space!
Program: Last fall I subscribed to the Adobe Cloud and it is amazing! I have CS6 on my laptop right now and I use illustrator a lot as well. I have also downloaded Lightroom and tried to play a little, but I will definitely need to take some time to learn it because I was just confused!
Camera: I have a Cannon DSLR that is awesome but that I need to pick up more! I used to take pictures all the time but with the kids getting older I don’t have as many “photo” moments, plus my cell phone is always with me and I find myself using it more often than not.
Anything Else: I love my tablet and usually use it over the mouse, my current tablet is a the bamboo fun + touch but with the new office space I think I’m ready for an upgrade!
A year or so ago, I took the time to make actions for several of my more common design tasks – copy/new/paste, save for web, save as jpg, save as png, expand/contract etc. I now have keyboard shortcuts for most repetitive things and I love the time it saves me! For photographs, I also made a quick action to simple open a jpg, resize it for my blog, and save – I can’t believe how much more fun it makes working in the long run because no one wants to waste time doing the boring stuff! If you’ve never done it before, making an action sounds really intimidating, but it SO is not, really you just do what you usually do only with the record button on. It is so worth the 5 mins it will take to learn and create actions, trust me!

Hello. Friend. is a kit that still makes me smile when I look at it, I started that kit by drawing the swirly paper pattern and I had so much fun drawing it that I seriously must have spent a full day doodling in illustrator! Sometimes I work to be productive, or to make a product that I think a customer will really love – but that paper I drew just because I wanted to doodle, and I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that kit because of it.
I love to try to come up with a boyish spin on Valentines Day every year since I’m a mom to 4 little men. This year I went with a kit that was all about how much I love those guys and I just love how it came out – I also love to see that boys mom’s everywhere were looking for the same thing <3
