In Honor of Hunter Lindsey

In early 2012, I attended Digiscrapapalooza in Las Vegas. Jenn Lindsey, one of our team members here, joined us there. We spent a lot of time together and Jenn glowed as she shared stories of her family; her boys, her husband, Hunter; how she and Hunter met; what a great dad Hunter was and how she knew he would be before they got married. That was one of the reasons she knew she wanted to marry him.

She shared stories of Hunter’s optimism and his love for running.

A few short months later, Jenn posted in our team forum that Hunter had been diagonsed with cancer and things were not looking good. Jenn continued to document this journey through her layouts. I’m sure you will recognize seeing them in the Playbook or here on the site:

Layout by Jenn. Supplies: A Bushel and a Peck by Meredith Cardall; Spaces (template) by Scrapbooklady Pages; Font: KG Makes You Stronger.

Jenn also set up a blog for Hunter to document things from his perspective. When I saw a post come through my email titled “The Finish Line” a few days ago, my heart sank. But Jenn says that Hunter wouldn’t want people shedding a bunch of tears over his death, rather sharing smiles over his life. So, today, we are honoring Hunter and the memories he made with his family, through Jenn’s eyes:

Supplies: Scrapbook Graphics store collab; Traveling Typewriter font

Supplies: Template by Fiddle Dee Dee; Love You Because by Designs by Kat, All About Me by Scrap Orchard Designers, Journal Away font by Fontologie

Today, as always, our thoughts and prayers are with Jenn, their boys, and their families.  We’ve all been touched and uplifted by Hunter and the life he lived!

All of our love,

The Daily Digi Team & Family

DIY Word Art Strips

I love the look of word art strips, but sometimes the ones that are included with kits don’t say exactly what I want them to say. Luckily, they are really easy to make.

Instructions for DIY Word Art Strips

1. Draw rectangles of various sizes on a transparent canvas using the shape tool.

2. Add embellishments, like little hearts, triangles, chevrons, etc. to the word strips. You can find many interesting shapes in the custom shapes menu of Photoshop.

Leave one strip blank, if you like.

3. Add a text block on each one, in any fonts you like. (The fonts can be easily changed and resized later.)

4. Save the layered file.

Now, when you’re ready to work with the layered word art strips, all you have to do is clip your kit papers to the shapes, personalize the text, and flatten the file. Then it’s ready to be copied onto your scrapbook page. Here’s an example:

Supplies: My Life In Print, a TDD member exclusive kit

By creating your own word art strip template, you’ll always have it on-hand for the layouts you do in the future. This is a great way to get more out of your kits and add a personal touch to your pages.

Phrases To Avoid When Holding Your Camera

Back to school means it’s also time to take your kids’ first day of school photos. Love them or hate them, they are a right of passage.

What can you do to get the best back to school photos? It all starts knowing what phrases to avoid!

Eye squint and an unnatural smile appears.

Most children (and adults) have no idea how to do this when standing in front of a camera!

They may look toward you, but they can’t really see you. And most people are just tired of this phrase.

So bossy. If it works for you use it, but on the first day of school, your subjects may need a little more coaxing!

These words don’t produce smiles that are natural or comfortable. Most children have learned a perfect fake smile for each phrase or they feel pressured to comply. And in my house, that pressure leads to ugly photos.

So what should you say to get your subject’s attention AND get a natural, beautiful smile?

You get one smile point for silly and one smile point for the “uh” sound at the end.

One point for unexpected words producing smiles. One point for uh at the end.

Two points for silly.

Words that end in the “uh” sound create a much more natural expression. Here’s a great video with even more tips on the “uh” sound.

Silly words and phrases help to produce giggles and bigger smiles. Wait for the moment just after the laugh to capture the natural smile that follows.

And if you simply can’t get cooperation, settle for what you can get.

What are your go to phrases to get cooperation and natural smiles? Share in the comments below.

It’s Time for Summer Blossoms

It has been far too long since Wimpychompers joined us in The Digi Files! Christina’s style typically includes some of her very own doodles related to the theme. Many of her kits have some adorable little people that contribute to the theming of the collection.  She also does a great job of including lots of different textures in her kits that add dimension to layouts. I especially love the little touches of glitter that can be found in some of her kits (not too much and not too little).  We are excited to have Wimpychompers in The Digi Files again, she is always great to work with!  Let’s take a closer look at “Summer Blossoms” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Wimpychompers’ contribution:

I am Christina Anderson from the High Desert of Southern California. I have been married over 12 years to my sweetheart, a math teacher (a subject I am more than happy to let him teach… not me thankfully). My oldest son is 9 and has a few special needs but is the most amazing little boy. Our daughter, 8 and son, 5 1/2 are also just special and amazing. I have been designing for almost 6 years now I believe and I am also a business owner of a photography studio opened a year ago. I love being creative and love my family.

I was so in love with this project because 8 is such a special age in our church. Doing a photo session to remember this with her was a blast. Even more special was that the dresses she wore for this session were both sentimental family dresses so capturing them was important as well. We set up the backdrop/lighting/flooring in a small space in my family room and it turned out beautifully. Being a photographer is more than a hobby for me of course but doing it for my daughter was a special project.

I first started out being a siggy designer. I saw one and was fascinated so I found Paint Shop Pro and taught myself how to create the siggies and tags. I loved it and soon moved to writing tutorials for siggies using Paint Shop Pro. After my two oldest were born I quickly learned regular paper scrapping was more difficult as a mother and I was looking for a way to continue scrapping but without the mess. I started digital scrapping when I joined Danielle Corbitt’s CT team (long time ago) and soon began designing as well. It’s been almost 6 years of designing and I am happy to be designing and scrapping.

I love Pinterest, it’s so full of amazing and creative ideas! I also think colors/textures/clothing inspire me. Over the years I’ve learned to be inspired from what’s around me and there is nothing better than when it all comes together.

Computer: I design on a Toshiba laptop but have a huge touch screen that I love and occasionally use as well (although this is usually for photo editing itself).
Program: I design on Paint Shop Pro X4 and Adobe CS3 but recently upgraded to CS6 and am still learning all about it. 🙂 I have Illustrator and Lightroom as well but don’t use those as often for designing.
Camera: Currently a Nikon D5000 but will upgrade as soon as finances allow. I have a battery grip which is awesome (love having extended batter life). I use a 50 mm 1.8 lens on occasion but my favorite is the 55-200 1.8 lens. I do intend on upgrading like I said but for now I use what I have and make beautiful images with it.
Anything Else: I do have the tablet but do not use it as often as I’d like because I’m not as coordinated with it.
I can definitely give a photography tip! 🙂 One of the biggest mistakes we make when we want to look thin in photographs is framing our subject directly at the camera. We stand straight on, smiling, and this in fact makes us wider. A nice trick is to remember to bring one leg back and put your weight on it, one leg forward. Think of it like a ballerina pose, left foot pointed left, right pointed forward (assuming left is the back leg and right is the front leg) and space them apart. It may feel awkward for some people but practice in a mirror and you will see what I mean. Drop your shoulder slightly (the one facing the camera) and stand tall. This will help slim you down almost instantly. If you are confused shoot me a message, I’d be happy to help guide you through this.

This actually surprised me that this is the one I chose but I have to admit this one was one of my favorites. I got the idea to create a kit that represents the 80s and called my sister excited about this adventure. We brainstormed all of the things we loved as children (I was born in 1981 so I was definitely a child of the 80s). The colors were fairly easy to pick out for this, everything in it reminded me of my childhood. It was a blast, it was difficult to finally wrap it up and put it in the store because it just kept getting larger!

The karate kits are such a huge deal! I couldn’t choose just one so I showed all of them but a majority of my color collections are my best sellers. These allow clients the ability to choose what colors fit their team or their kids colors and it’s an amazing seller.

These color collections are inspired because I love the idea of choosing the colors YOU need. I don’t want to sacrifice my layout because my child is wearing blue and the kit only has red. Clients could change colors but it takes time and sometimes doesn’t come out right if not done correctly. These collections simply made it easier for all of us. 🙂

Here are some of my favorite products by Wimpychompers:

Create your own laptop & device skins

skin it

I love that many online companies will let you upload your own artwork to create custom device skins! As long as you are simply creating a skin for your own personal use, most digital scrapbook supply terms of use should allow for this type of creation. What a fun way to use your supplies!

Of course, there are plenty of ready-made options out there as well. It’s so fun to make your gadgets unique with artwork that reflects your personality. My daughter was thrilled to order her favorite Monet painting as a laptop skin. We used and were very happy with the quality and service. They have skins for a variety of products such as; laptops, phones, tablets, and handheld game systems.

photo (2)

Steph has used used recently (after Stephanie Haining talked about them on a Capturing Magic podcast) and thought they did a really great job with her iPhone case. They are Apple only products. Look at this fun case she made for her daughter!

Decal Girl has a really easy to use interface for this and even provides a video overview. You can even order skins for game systems and controllers! I haven’t personally used Decal Gal, but I have seen good reviews from some online friends who liked their products.

Have you ordered any skins for any of your devices? Do you have a company to recommend or any special tips? We’d love to hear about your experiences!

Simple Tricks – Playing with Photos

Have you ever wondered about all the bells and whistles that come with your photo editing software? Oftentimes we’re hesitant to try something new and unknown or we simply have very little time to be experimenting around. I have become very fond of the pull-down menu in the Layers Palette in Photoshop Elements and use these blending modes in my scrapbooking. Below is a sample of some layouts using some of these blending modes:

The blending modes are great when you want to use a big picture without overpowering your layout or even when you want to place text on top of a photo. There are lots of options from personal style to evoking a certain feel to your page.

Below are samples of each of the blending modes using the same photo so that you can easily see the various options. The blending modes show up best when you use a background paper. In this case I used a tan paper from One Little Bird’s kit “Candid” (coming soon to The Daily Digi files!).

In addition to the blending modes, you can play with the opacity by using the sliding bar.

Simple, right? Go ahead and give it a try! Try one of the blending modes in your next layout and see what you think. Go big and have fun!
