Wild And Free Inspiration

I really liked a quote from one of the journaling cards, but I struggled to find a way to fit the card onto my layout. So, using the Magic Wand tool in PSE, and holding down the shift key, I selected all the letters from the quote and copied it onto my layout. The font transferred nicely onto the plain background of my photo.

My tip is a good reminder! Make sure you click “save” every little bit. I was working along at the end of this layout when suddenly PSE crashed. I thought Ugh–how long has it been since I saved? Luckily, it hadn’t been too long and I didn’t have to redo much. Save save save!

When I include a lot of journaling, I usually either type it in a Word document or cut and paste the completed journaling into Word for a spell check. For all the time and effort I put into a layout, I would hate to print it only to find out that I have a misspelled word or typo on the final product!

Violets Are Blue Inspiration

One of the beauties of digital scrapbooking is the ease of “cutting” shapes. For this layout on my daughter’s Bubble Run, I used the elliptical marquee tool to cut the circle. Using my workspace rulers, I dragged the mouse until both the side and bottom were the same measurement. That way the circle came out proportionately perfect. I did the same for the watercolor journal cards.

Sometimes you just have to let the elements lead you.

My husband loves using the PicCollage app when uploading pictures to his social media. It allows him to fit multiple pictures into one square frame. This, in turn, allows me to fit 13+ photos in a template with only 4 photo spots. While the pictures may be small, they don’t overwhelm the page and the story is told. I love using various apps and social media tools to my advantage while digiscrapping!

Summer No More Inspiration

I wanted the little paper airplane to be more dimensional, but not the dotted line that came with it. For a quick fix, I duplicated the layer and erased the dotted line on the top layer and gave that top layer a shadow. I love the lined paper in the background, but in a few places the lines ran through my text. So using the clone tool, I used a soft edge brush and reduced the opacity and then just went over those lines to lessen their impact. Now it’s much easier to read but not too obvious that the lines were altered.

I decided I didn’t want to use layer shadows on my background because I wanted to have the pencil be flat against the layout. The pencil was originally on the striped background paper so I duplicated the tip and the yellow to a new layer and placed it over the red paper. I used the magic wand tool on each color and selected new layer via copy. I then dragged the layers over the red paper.

I like using styles created by some designers to further embellish my pages. On this page, I used an Enamel Style by Mommyish to create the little flowers. All I did was use the Magic Wand to create a flower shape from one of the flowers that came with the kit, and then applied the Enamel Style to the flowers. I duplicated the layers to give them different colors, and easily got a couple more embellishments for this page.

Simply Baby Inspiration

I love the fun alpha included with this kit and wanted to use the letters on the little journal flags. I clicked the magic wand tool on each letter, clicked select inverse, and deleted the background of each letter to easily place them on the flags. It took awhile but was worth it!

This is a really cute baby kit, but I wanted to use it to document year-by-year of my kids together. On the month cards, I used the Magic Wand tool, and selected the black parts of the number (use shift key). Then in PSE I used Select>Modify>Expand and selected 10 pixels. That gave a white border around the letters and picked up the white bits inside the letters I hadn’t previously selected. Then I copied to my layout and gave them a shadow so they’d look like stickers.

Memory Lane Inspiration

I really liked the theme of this kit with this picture but there was no pink to be seen in the kit. So I selected the solid orange paper and used the Hue/saturation slider to adjust the color until it was a pink of my liking. Then I took the patterned papers and used the magic wand to select an orange piece of the pattern. I clicked select similar and then chose new layer via copy, making sure the solid pink layer was highlighted in the layers panel. This made a new pink layer of just the selected shapes. I dragged this layer above the patterned paper and then merged the two layers to make a single layer. I did this completely within my layout so my original patterned papers are not altered at all.

These photos are from before I had a camera. A friend sent them to me at very low resolution via email 15 yrs ago. By keeping the photos small in the layout, I could preserve the quality. There were few photos, so I duplicated some of the photos and layered them so that there appears to be more.

This template began as a two-photo template. But I wanted to highlight the single picture. So I replaced one of the photo spots with the camera. Don’t be afraid to substitute elements for photo spots to give your templates more flexibility.

I wanted to use some foliage to embellish the flower clusters. At first, I hesitated using the leafy one that came with the kit (one that wasn’t drawn). It seemed too large and I thought it wouldn’t look good with the clusters. But then I decided to radically reduce its size, and duplicate it a number of times to use in various places, and it turned out that it really gave the flower clusters a lot more dimension and the fact that it was massively reduced in size doesn’t look strange (as I thought it would) either. So, I encourage you to be bold and try drastically reducing the size of some ellies you use on your page to see what effect it may have. You never know, you might end up loving the results.
