Miss Mint: Regular Gal Friday

DesignerLogo

I’m really excited to be welcoming back the wonderful Miss Mint of Peppermint Creative! I love Miss Mint’s crisp/clean papers and ability to combine doodles with real elements to create a cohesive look. Miss Mint’s themed kits are super fun and well thought out. I think what I love the most about her collections though are the bright, bold, and sometimes, unexpected color choices. Let’s take a closer look at “Modern Mama” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Miss Mint’s contribution:

Name
I’m so excited to be back for a second time at The Daily Digi. My name is Pamela but around digi-land I’m best known as Miss Mint or MM for short. I’m the owner/designer/tech support/customer service representative/social media & marketing manager/regular gal friday behind Peppermint Creative. I live in Toronto, Canada and spent far too much time in front of my computer, which is why when I’m not working or eating you will likely find me at the gym.

I’m probably one of the few designers that didn’t start out as a scrapbooker. Truth be told I’m still not a scrapbooker. I love to design but once in a while I get the urge to make a page. This is my most recent creation using one of our free monthly Pimp My Page Challenge Templates and it just makes me smile. I love the look of the huge bold letters and the contrast of the red and black.

DesignerLO

started
My professional background is in copywriting and graphic design. I worked at an interactive advertising agency for a while and then did some freelance design but found it really creatively fulfilling. I stumbled into scrapbooking by accident about 7 years ago while trying to paper scrapbook a recent vacation. I was immediately excited about the idea of designing instead of scrapbooking and my graphic design background provided me with enough technical knowledge to start experimenting. I started building my website while trying to figure out how to design scrapbook kits and in 2006, Peppermint Creative launched as a hobby but quickly and rather unexpectedly turned into a full time job. Didn’t see that one coming but I’m very grateful and feel very lucky!

inspired
Most often, my team. Seeing their layouts and their creativity always inspires more ideas. They give me amazing feedback and great ideas that push me to create things I otherwise wouldn’t have. Sometimes inspiration is accidental. I start with one idea and the kit/design somehow goes off in a totally different direction that was not planned. That has happened quite a bit!

tools
Computer: It’s official – I’ve been Mac-ified and I’ve gone mobile. In November I bought my first laptop EVER. Very exciting stuff. After years and years on a PC, I tested the waters with a refurbished Mac Pro Quad-Core G5 which I loved but it was pre-intel so there came a point where I either had to upgrade or get a new PC. But I have to tell you, once you go Mac, you never go back! So I coughed up a small fortune for a 15″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display with 16 GB of RAM. I was very worried that it wouldn’t be enough power to keep up with me but so far it’s been amazing. I have a 2TB EHD attached containing all my documents and files and when I’m home I keep the laptop closed and have it hooked up to two external Cinema displays so I still feel like I’m working on a desktop but I get the portability of the laptop. Amazeballs.
Program: Photoshop CS6 and Adobe Illustrator CS6
Camera: Canon 7D with the following lenses: 50mm f/1.8, 17-85mm f/1.4-5.6, 75-300mm f/1.4-5.6 and the 430EX Speedlite External Flash. I also use my Olympus Pen E-PL1 quite a bit but now that I have the iPhone5 I’ve been using that as my camera the most. I am totally obsessed with Instagam. Everything looks better on Instagram!
Anything Else: Wacom Tablet, HP 4850 Scanner, Canon IP4300 Printer and Silhouette SD.
tipstricks
Give any photo an instant frame by adding an inner stroke. I use this trick a lot because I like the look of a clean white frame around my image. It really makes it pop off the background. You can also use this tip on any element to give it the look of a sticker.

In Photoshop, select the item you are going to frame in the layers palette. Double click to bring up the Layer Style box. Select Stroke. Choose your color and your size (thickness of border) and choose either Inside (for a photo) or Outside (to turn an element into a sticker). Select OK. Hooray.

favorite
I’m a little bit obsessed with the entire Life in Pictures product line. This is the Peppermint Creative take on the whole ‘Project Life’ extravaganza. This particular set is a collection of editable templates so they integrate well with an existing album. You can customize them as needed. Visit Peppermint Creative and select ‘Life in Pictures’ to find even more templates, papers, washi tape and my fun new line of Jazzers (elements designed to ‘jazz’ up your daily life albums).

Sunkissed Summer is by far my most popular kit. I LOOOVE this kit but it’s still always a surprise what is going to be a hit and what’s going to be a miss. If I knew the answer they’d all be massive hits! ;) I think the winning combo here is the theme (everyone loves the beach), the calm summer colors and the fun mix of elements. I especially love the lemon and water splashes. One of my most favorite pages I’ve ever scrapped was created with this kit – so there ya go!

What do I do after iNSD?

post insd help

Kate Hadfield all the everydays. LD Elementary font.

Every month in the team forum here at The Daily Digi we check in with each other and talk about what is going on in our lives. This month, I noticed right away that we all seem to be feeling overwhelmed after the recent iNSD weekend. We all did quite a bit of digi shopping and downloaded a lot of digital files and now we are trying to get motivated to organize our new stashes and get scrapping again. My guess is that a lot of you feel the very same way right now. This is the perfect time to rely on The Daily Digi to help!

Get it all downloaded

Be sure that you have downloaded everything you ordered. If you didn’t download the files immediately as you purchased them, log back into each store account and check your order history. Some stores have expiration dates on their downloads so you don’t want to put this task off too long. Here are some resources to help you:

Organize your files

Organization systems range from the simple to more complex. Some scrappers don’t organize at all but just move their purchases to an external hard drive to save space on their main machine. Others might tag their supplies, or use folder based systems to put things away. There is no right or wrong way to manage your digital goodies as long as you can find and use them. What’s most important is to find a system that works for you.

Find inspiration for using your supplies

Don’t just let all those new supplies sit on your hard drive forever, find the inspiration you need to use them! There are so many great resources out there to help; creative team layouts, store galleries, flickr groups, blogs, and more. Of course, we have a ton of ways to help you here at The Daily Digi as well! Try searching through our archives or take a look through our Flickr group for ideas. Here are some other helpful links:

Keep it manageable

If you have a lot of supplies to sort through, try breaking the task up into smaller pieces. Decide to put away 5 files a day until it’s done or turn on the television or listen to The Digi Show to keep you entertained while you get everything sorted out. Don’t forget to reward yourself with some time to play with your new goodies!

Not Interesting Enough?

NotInterest

Supplies: Not Pictured by Allison Pennington, Fonts are Blackout and The Only Exception

We live in a family of daily and weekly routines. I know there are many families like mine, where the day-to-day doesn’t vary much.

From a scrapbooking perspective: What memories should we capture then? Can we maintain momentum on a project like P365 or Project 52? I think so!

I do a weekly double-page spread using the simple gridded style of pocket scrapbooking. Here are some ways that I’ve documented our routines and daily happenings in our family.

Incorporating the Random

I try to take photos most days of the week, but February is historically my slowest photo month. This year was no exception. Some weeks, like the one below, I only had a handful of photos to use. Worse still, I didn’t take many notes about the week – even scanning my email and Facebook and phone didn’t help. I managed to put together this weekly layout by relying on a few random lists and quotes:

2013-02-17-23-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird, Kraft Edition Project Life

I filled out the week with ideas like:

  • Movies I had seen in the year to date
  • A list of 10 movies I love
  • A few random quotes from my kids
  • Noting how much we love pasta in the winter (since that is one thing I did take a picture of during the week)

I don’t take the idea of Project 52 too literally – I scrap a weekly spread, but every photo and piece of journaling doesn’t have to be perfectly tied to the week. If it relates to my life in the general time period, I’m okay with including it. For example, I think there is value in noting the movies I’ve watched to date. It’s not something I want to document each and every week, but a round-up on the occasional weekly layout is a nice reminder for the future.

Rely on Photos to Document the Now

I must have been feeling bad about the general lack of February photos, because at the very end of February and into March, my volume of photo-taking dramatically improved.

2013-02-24-to03-02-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird Designs, Midnight Edition by Liz Tamanoha

2013-03-17-23-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets No. 6 Stitched by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird Designs, Kraft Edition Project Life by Tiffani Smith, Black & White: Labeled by Michele Godin, Date It by Penny Springmann, Doodlings 1 by Emily Merritt, Get Artsy by Jenn Barrette

These were weeks where “nothing” happened – no birthdays, anniversaries, job changes, house moves, babies born, or any other one of life’s major milestones. Just regular weeks in the life of our family.

To document the weeks, I took photos of the little moments:

  • Us on our commute
  • My daughter modeling clothes at the mall
  • The result of a major snowstorm
  • The before and after of cleaning out my pantry
  • A few incredibooth (an iPhone app) shots
  • My kids being silly
  • The messy spots and neat spots in my home
  • Food prepared and enjoyed

I like these pages. They’re some of my favourites in my album because they’re so *us*, right now.

Other People’s Stories

During the week below, I borrowed the photos and story of the hockey game from my husband and it takes up 1/4 of the weekly layout.

2013-03-10-16-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird Designs, Midnight Edition by Liz Tamanoha

My project is about my family, but it’s clearly in my voice. Sometimes though, big things happen to my husband or my children, and I want to share them. I ask to borrow copies of photos from friends and family for situations where I don’t have any of my own and most of the time they’re happy to provide them to me. For journaling, I’ll ask them about what happened and then retell the story on a journaling card. I enjoy how these stories add context to the overall project album.

Note the Little Moments

2013-03-03-09-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird, 4×6 Photo Collages No. 1 by Designs by Lili, Seafoam Edition Becky Higgins Project Life

I won’t always be the mom to two small children. Already I can see that the little baby days went by in the blink of an eye. I suspect the years of raising school agers will go by just as quickly and then I’ll have teenagers. As much as I may wish to try, I can’t stop the clock. The only thing I can do is note the moments and savour them.

Yin Designs: Worth Experimenting

DesignerLogo

I am so happy to have Yin’s Designs joining us in The Digi Files once again.  If you like simple layouts with lots of photos, Yin’s templates are perfect for you! I’ve been using her templates for a long time and the layouts I’ve created with them are still some of my favorites!  I can’t wait to put these Instagram templates to good use to instantly put some of my favorite DSLR photos in the square Instagram shape!  Let’s take a closer look at “Yin’s Instagram Templates 336 to 339 and Double PageTemplates 340 to 341″ that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Hi I’m Yin and I’m a wife, mom, and addicted to creating art and life story telling through digiscrapping! I live in the sunny tropical island city of Singapore in South East Asia and just love how scrapbooking and memory keeping connects with all of us even though we are from diverse cultures and backgrounds. I’m married for 19 years to my wonderful husband who started me on my scrapbooking journey and we have two teenage sons who are sixteen and fourteen. My layouts have evolved with my family from cute pages of my boys and their various exploits and to my teenagers and their adventures, and of course our life as a family. And I have found that I never run out of stuff and memories to create pages for!

layout
During our mid year school holidays in June last year I was inspired by Ali Edwards’ Summer Manisfesto idea and my family came up with our own Holiday Manisfesto and it was such fun intentionally making our holidays count. This layout was designed to capture each manisfesto as they were accomplished and as you can see we had a great time. It was also when I first tried Instagram so this layout was made with those in mind. Same as templates 336 to 339 included in this months’ TDFs! By the way this template is a free download still available on my blog.

started
Literally, we were at our local library when dh picked up a copy of Creating Keepsakes, handing it to me saying he thinks I might be interested in this(!) I was hooked. I enjoyed paper scrapping for a few months, then discovered digiscrapping and loved how easily I can create beautiful pages at minimal cost. At one point I tried designing kits but I was far more interested in creating my own layouts and memories. Soon I decided to make templates out of my own layouts to support my own digiscrapping hobby, selling from my little blog store in 2008, and unbelievably, I am now at Template 341 :)

inspired
Our lives, adventures and photos, of course. And almost anything, from the web, advertisements, magazines, to colors, patterns I see around me everyday.

tools
Computer: I am on a Lenovo idea centre (with built in 21″ monitor) running on Windows 7 with 8 GB.
Program: I only use my trusty Adobe Photoshop CS4!
Camera: For capturing daily memories and moments I use almost entirely my iphone 4 these days! Events and our travel photos are mostly captured by my Dh using his Canon S90. We’ve been on the S90 for more than 5 years and dh is itching to upgrade but the S90 photos are still brilliant and giving us no excuse to do so, lol.
Anything Else: I have a Bamboo tablet which I rarely use though.

tipstricks
I always have tons of photos on my layouts so embellishments are kept to a minimum. Instead I rely on two areas to create interest in my layouts. Firstly, a striking title, and secondly, color coordination and contrast. For titles, the easiest way is to use a combination of an alpha (large and bold) and type (use a contrasting font). Color coordination and contrast is where I think it makes or breaks a layout. I spend the longest time looking for a background that will bring out my photos, and not smother them, nor blending in so much the photos look bland. Usually a neutral background that contrasts with the main colors in the layout works. Sometimes I will pick out an accent color in the photos I want to highlight and pick a background in a similar color or color family to match that. It’s worth the time experimenting!

favorite
This template set is my favorite only because it was based on an album I created for my dh for his birthday. That album is my personal favorite. On the left pages I used coordinating patterned paper with a quote or journaling that said what I felt about each aspect of my man and on the right added accompanying photos. It is a very special book for both of us.

DesFav
popular
In the last year this set of Half-Monthly templates have become my most popular product. I use them and the accompanying Template set 317 to scrap my everyday 365 photos. Each template fits 15 to 16 photos, (half a month), and has space for a block of journalling. I used them to capture the whole of our 2012, and printed them out to slot into my physical Project Life album. (You can see examples on my blog.) I think they are popular because they are so easy to use, and in a short time we can have a summary overview of our weeks and months!

If This Then That

A long time ago on The Digi Show, Peppermint’s pick was If This Then That, IFTTT.com. I loved the idea of the site, but didn’t get around to using it until a couple of weeks ago. But once I got in there, I thought, “Once again, Peppermint’s pick has changed my life.”

With this site, I can set up just about any action to occur when triggered by an event. So far, I’ve set up:

  • having an email sent to me when someone posts on their blog, (that doesn’t have an email subscription available)
  • having a text sent to me when I get an email from a specific email address
  • having a post made to my Capturing Magic Facebook page WITH a picture in it when a new post is made on the site

Some cool things that can be done with IFTTT:

  • if I post a new photo to Instagram, have it sent to DropBox too
  • text me the weather every morning
  • save any Instagram photo I like to Evernote
  • back up text messages to Evernote

You can find recipes people have created by browsing here. What about you? Are you using IFTTT? What are you doing with it?

As you can tell, tomorrow is a big day in digiland – it’s {inter}National Scrapbook Day and it is one of my favorite days of the whole year! It’s all a great big excuse to do some scrapping, share inspiration, and to GO SHOPPING! As always, we have the scoop on where and what the best deals in digiland are and we are here to act as a guide to get you through this holiday with ease.

Your Guide to the Good Stuff:

This is the last chance to contribute to Tangie Baxter’s amazing new kickstarter project in the works. You can read all about it at kickstarter.com and through this special edition of the Scrapbookgraphics Skinny.
