Maya De Groot: Josephine and Her Flying Machine

DesignerLogo

I’m pleased to welcome Maya De Groot to The Digi Files for the first time!  Maya has a very vintage, weathered style that sometimes includes doodles, great type combinations, and great elements that create cohesive collections. My team found they really enjoyed creating with this kit! Let’s take a closer look at “Brocante” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Name
Hi, I’m Maya of Maya de Groot Designs. I’m a 20 year old student from Amersfoort, the Netherlands. I study Architecture at the University of Technology in Delft and live with two other architecture students in a student house in Pijnacker. On the weekends, I go home to my parents and 14 year old brother. My studies take up most of my time, but when I do have some free time I love to have fun with friends, be creative, design and scrap.

I love to doodle and I wanted to make a Steampunk style kit for a long time, so I decided to combine those two. While working on my Zen & the Art of: Steam Machines kit I started playing around with the doodled elements to see if it would work with the theme. I wanted to make it look like it’s a complete background that takes over the frame/picture. I had the elements placed the way I wanted, but I couldn’t think of a title or journaling. So I saved the page and started watching TV. That night the Titanic was on and when Jack started singing “Josephine and her flying machine”, I knew that would be my title. This is one of my favourite art journal pages, since it combines my love for Zentangles, Steampunk and Art Nouveau. A tip on art journaling: I’m really bad at journaling, I just can’t do it. But I love the style of the layouts, so I use lyrics instead. No need to come up with my own words!

started
During the summer holidays of 2005 my niece and I got all excited about making our own jewellery. Two years later, when I was on vacation my aunt bought my niece and me some scrapbook letters, so we could make a scrapbook page about the summer. I got all enthusiastic and told my mom about it, but she wasn’t so sure. I just got all these beads and stuff and she thought: ooh it’s just another hobby. But I really wanted to do this, so I convinced my mom how much fun it would be. We bought lots of paper stuff (only made some pages), because when searching online for paper supplies, my mom discovered digital scrapbooking. We tried and both fell in love with it. That was fall 2007. The very first forum we joined was Oscraps.com and it became our home. My mom and I started as a regular members, soon started CT-ing for Oscraps designers and both became a Site CT member at Oscraps. I love scrapping and one day I just thought let’s try designing. That was a couple of years ago. Just making some freebies, but in the summer of 2010 I decided I really wanted to design and since December 16th 2010 I’m part of the Oscraps design team! And now my mom is even CT-ing for me!

inspired
Inspiration, for me, is everywhere. Magazines, TV-commercials, Ads, Movies, Songs, Architecture, Colour palettes, everything. I just love to get creative with paper and paint or photoshop and combine those in scrapbooking.

tools

Computer: I have a HP Elitebook 8540W ( 15,6 inch, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, IntelCore i7, NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics 1 GB video memory, 4GB RAM, Weight: 6lbs 7.2oz), but I mostly use it for my architecture study (needs to run heavy programs). For designing I often use my parents Acer Aspire 7750 Laptop. (17,3 inch, Windows 7, IntelCore i5, 6GB DDR3 Memory, 500 GB HDD).
Program: I use Photoshop Elements 5.0 to design. I do have PSE9 PSE10, PhotoshopCS5 and IllustratorCS5, but I don’t used these to design much, mostly because I don’t know exactly where everything is/how everything works in these programs. And pencils, fine liners, markers and paint for handmade elements.
Camera: I have a Canon Powershot SX 10IS
Anything Else: LaCie Starck 1,5 TB EHD, Canon CanoScan 4400F, Wacom Bamboo Fun M Tablet.
tipstricks
A tip: don’t be afraid to try something new! There are so any styles and ways to make a page, there’s no right or wrong way. And with digital scrapbooking you can just start over if you don’t like it or use the Ctrl-Z option. Don’t know where to start with a new style, try scraplifting a layout or join a specific style challenge.

favorite
Zen & the Art of: Steam Machines is my favourite product. I loved the style, which I discovered while watching Castle (Season 3, Episode 4). Since the day I decided I wanted to design, I’ve wanted to make a steampunk style kit. The dark colours, Victorian/vintage style and gears. I started on it two years ago and made some parts every once in a while. Last summer I decided I needed to finish it, I did just before my 20th Birthday. So it was a sort of birthday present to myself, to finally have finished this kit. I love that it can be used for all sorts of layouts, Art Journaling, Heritage, Clean, Clustered, Collage. I can’t wait to make a part two (but I guess that will take some time before it’s ready).

Travelers Treasure Box is my most popular product, probably because it has been featured on several sites. And I think because it’s a travel kit and people like to scrap their vacation pictures. (at least that are the type of pictures I like to scrap most). I wanted to create a travel kit, with colours and elements that could be used for any type of vacation I had been to. I started looking at pictures from Rome, France, the UK and Los Angeles and decided on colours that would work for pictures of all of these vacations.

thanks for this wonderful article about Maya. You are so young and already so talented. When I first got a steampunk kit from one of my designer I ct for, I was a little it afraid. It was so different than all those “normal” kits with flowers and so on. But I had also a lot of fun to think a little it more what to do.
