Julie Billingsley: No Longer Daunting

DesignerLogo

I think one of my favorite things to scrap with by Julie Billingsley is her patterned papers! They are super easy to use in a small space, big space, and combine together without competing for attention.  It’s not easy as a designer to get the patterns on papers just right and Julie does a fabulous job. I also love her themed kits and she knocks the boy kits out of the park! I’m happy to welcome Julie back to The Digi Files again. Let’s take a closer look at “Imagine That” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Name
Hello! My name is Julie Billingsley and I live in Oregon with my husband, two sons, and our dog. My oldest son is 21 and in his third year of college and my youngest son is 9 and in fourth grade. You probably just realized that is an 11+ year age difference and think I’m crazy… you’d be right. Just kidding! Honestly, being a mom is the best thing that could have happened to me and the age difference in the boys just keeps me on my toes and makes parenting more fun!

In my free time, my husband and I enjoy taking our dog Maisie for walks. We walk almost 3 miles each day. I also love to read, learn new things, and dream about taking vacations.

layout
This layout is of my youngest son from back in 2004. I had initially disliked the photo because my son wouldn’t look into the camera, so the picture stayed unscrapped on my hard drive only to be forgotten. Then 8 years later, Jady Day Studio and I created this baseball theme collab so I dug around my hard drive, found this picture and realized what a hidden treasure it was. I couldn’t be happier with this layout turned out!

started
I am a designer at Sweet Shoppe Designs. I was so blessed to actually start my designing career there five years ago. I scrapped my heart out at the Sweet Shoppe’s and the Lilypad’s creative teams prior to that. Although I don’t get to do it enough these days, I will probably always consider myself a scrapper first. I believe designing from the perspective of a scrapper makes my product very useable and enjoyable to scrapbook with.

inspired

My inspiration typically comes from my family photos and events. I have been inspired by everything from the colors of a children’s book, to a visit to the zoo, to the shirt my son was wearing. Inspiration is in no shortage, however time to create it all is!

tools
Computer: 27″ iMac with 8GB of RAM and 2TB of hard drive. My favorite accessory is my Wacom Intuos tablet. I use it for everything and don’t even have a mouse.

Program: Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator 5. For Mac apps, I use Better Rename 9 and YemuZip.
Camera: Canon S100 point and shoot and my iPhone camera are my main cameras.

tipstricks
Since I have 21 years of photos of my children, I’m pretty much resigned to the fact that I’ll never catch up. But I have a tip for making scrapping easier when you are overwhelmed with photos and memories. I always had the trouble of wanting to scrapbook, but just picking a photo to scrap was hard when facing the large amount of pictures on my hard drive and in photo bins. That was when I created a folder and put a maximum of 10 unscrapped photos in for each year. Not that the other photos weren’t important, but I said to myself, if I can only scrapbook 10 memories for 1999, which 10 photos would I pick? Then armed with just 10 pictures a year, I could then easily know what kits I was on the look out for. Picking a photo was no longer daunting. Then when scrapping, I can easily go back to my original folders to grab supplemental photos from the same event to add to my layout as well. This technique is how I found that adorable picture in my baseball layout above and finally got it scrapped.

favorite
My favorite kit is a fireworks kit called Ignite the Night that I created because I needed a fun vibrant kit for my Disney fireworks photos. I was a little nervous about the brightness of the colors with the contrast of the black when I picked out the colors, but I love how it turned out. It’s sparkly and fun, and I’ve seen many gorgeous layouts with it!

popular
My most popular product is a tropical kit called Kona Coast. I love the sun-faded beachy colors in this kit. I picked the colors from a men’s vintage Hawaiian shirt. It makes me dream of relaxing on a sunny beach, listening to the sounds of the waves, and soaking up the sun.

Julie and I met years ago at a digi-scrap convention at the beach – what a crazy good time it was… she is as great in person as her design work is on paper! Julie’s kits often make me wish I had a boy but I have definitely bought some more girly ones for my own scrapping of my daughter. Heck last summer I skipped putting any big fireworks in my own kit as I bought her Ignite the Night kit because it was so colorful and well done. Didn’t think I could improve on perfect – LOL.
