If You Ever Crave Chocolate

I never used to have a sweet tooth. I never really actually understood when other women would say that just needed to have some chocolate. It wasn’t that I didn’t like it — it was fine. But I can’t say I ever craved it, or needed it. And then I got pregnant with baby number four and all things changed. Chocolate was a NEED. A real give-it-to-me-or-you-die kind of need. I didn’t worry about it because I knew that once I had the baby all would back to normal and all Twix and Reece’s would be safe once again. Boy, was I wrong.
My baby is now 16 months old and I still crave chocolate. It is better than it was (starving the craving does, admittedly, help a little. But shhh…I didn’t tell you that) but I sill crave it at times. It just meets some instinctual female need, I guess. Me + chocolate = happiness.
So, if you are like me and have ever craved chocolate — I have a treat for you. A few weeks ago I was blog hopping and came across something — and they warned me — VERY dangerous. Very, very, dangerous. Over at the Everyday Celebrating blog they had a recipe for 5-minute chocolate cake. Yes, you read that right. You are just five minutes away from amazingly yummy homemade chocolate cake. You are five minutes away from this:

Oh yea…that’s what I am talking about. A little bit of chocolate heaven in a cup. And it is totally easy! Here is the recipe:
4 tablespoons of flour
4 tablespoons of sugar
2 tablespoons of cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons of milk
3 tablespoons of oil
3 tablespoons of chocolate chips (optional)
A splash of vanilla extract
A coffee mug

1. Add dry ingredients to mug and mix well.
2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.

3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

4. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract and mix again. (Now I realize that the recipe says that chocolate chips are optional, but I am telling you, the are not optional! Well, not for me anyway).

5. Place the mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.

Don’t be alarmed if the cake rises over the top of the mug!
Now you can eat it as is (which is my 9 o’clock snack method) or you can wait for it to cool, slice in half, top with some whipped cream or ice cream and voila!, a perfect five-minute treat. Won’t your friends be impressed when they stop by unannounced and you serve them this!

I’m just exiting my first trimester and SO in love with all things chocolate… I don’t know whether I should thank you for this recipe or not, LOL!
(sigh) I love this site.
I’ve made this cake & it’s so sinful because there is no waiting to bake & frost it like a regular cake! It’s also perfect for my girls, because then there’s no arguing over who has the bigger piece; they’re all the same size!!
omg! u have all of those ingredients right here right now! BUt I dont have a microwaved I chunked it!! might have to buy one now. =)
Great idea, Janet. THanks for passing it along. Someone needs to do a cookbook for solo diners full of recipes just like this.
My Mom gave me this recipe a couple of weeks ago. Can’t wait to try it. Since I’m trying to lose weight right now, I decided to give myself this treat after I reach a goal. LOL, it might not be the BEST reward for reaching a desired weight goal, but I too, adore all things chocolate!
Thank you, this sounds like my kinda cooking (and eating!)
Oh, my. I love chocolate, but the mad-chocolate-eater at my household is my husband. He will freak out with this recipe! Thanks, Janet!
okay, great digiscrapping, evernote, and now chocolate… you are the best blog out there!!!
Holy Moly, Janet. I wish I wouldn’t have read this post. I don’t need any more excuses to eat chocolate or whipped cream or chocolate chips. But you can surely bet I’m going to be trying this.
I’m off to make some chocolate cake!!!
yeah, what she said ^^
I wouldn’t have read this post if I knew what was coming *sigh*
Janet, you’re bad, very very bad….
Oh, I am looking forward to trying this out! Thanks!!
oh my, I’m so looking forward to trying this recipe…
Holy Cow. I am turning off my computer after printing this and making it NOW! I know it’s after 10 pm, but I gotta have it!
THANK YOU!!!
Wow. That was Super Yummy!
I did fresh raspberries because I was out of Chocolate chips and was in a hurry to see how it turned out, and forgot the vanilla, but it was still yummy! My husband even liked it…and he doesn’t care for chocolate cake.
The texture was different than I expected, but I still liked it.
Verdict: 4 stars out of 5!
Oh my. I am really glad I didn’t know about this when I was craving a few days ago! But it’s only a matter of weeks before I’m there again
I don’t really even like chocolate, but I have a couple of days a month when it is all I can do to resist… and most of those times I don’t! hah! We can get Twix bars here in Peru and they are my current downfall in those moments of weakness
I am going to print this off and put it in with my recipes, and hope to forget about it when I’m craving something chocolate, but remember it when my guests pop in. Like you said, I’m SURE they’d be impressed!
Thanks,
Amy
Oh my wow. This looks so delicious I need to try it!!
Wow, thanks for sharing this! It looks delish & seems like something even a total non-cook/baker like me can make! I have a stupid question though (I did mention I dont cook
) What type of flour (self-raising, plain?), sugar (icing sugar, normal coarse sugar?) & milk (fresh, evaporated, sweetened condense?) should we use? Thanks very much!
Janet I love you LOL
Thanks for sharing.
this looks like pure evil, but i can’t wait to try it. cake mixes are fine if you want a lot of cake but this looks fantastic!
Saw this post, had to make it! Thanks so much for this and for the link to the site you got it from. SO, I have a question. mine was a little rubbery. Still tasted good enough for me to eat tho! Do you think I cooked it too long or stirred too much? Any ideas?
Dangerous yes…but sometimes ’safer’ kwim? ROFLOL
THANK YOU!
Oh.My.God. This is like one stop shopping, digi-know how and chocolate all wrapped up in one big fuuzy comfy website. I love you. ;P
When I got to the article on the chocolate cake in a cup you had me hooked! This is the perfect solution for desert for our next family gathering before the Grandkids go back to school. I am now a huge fan of your site. Thank you for this wonderful idea! Taking pics of everyone making their own chocolate cake after dinner will be great and of course once they are on a page we can remember this forever. Thank you again!
Unfortunately my youngest gave this a thumbs down…you just never know with kids, right? ROFLOL
I made this this morning and my first bite was delish…but after it cooled, it was hard and rubbery. I think the difference would be in the wattage of the microwave. The recipe says 1000 watts for 3 minutes…my microwave has more watts than that on full power. I think next time I will use a lower power level…that would probably solve the problem of it being too rubbery. Wonderful though and totally worth some trial and error. Thanks for the recipe!
Tried it. Loved it. Thanks a lot. You Enabler.
Mmm I made this except instead of chocolate chips I used sprinkles & I added hot fudge over the top
I am going to share it with the place I work because the girls would love to make this. Every one of them loves chocolate!
Very good. Tried it this weekend. My parents loved it too. Thanks
