I always feel like I need to have the music playing like they have at the beginning of tip off at a basketball game when we launch new Digi Files! Smile It’s a super FUN time of month for everyone here at The Daily Digi (designers, members, my team, Katie, and myself). I’m pumped up and ready to reveal to you the designers that contributed to The Digi Files #36:

Lauren Reid
Viva Artistry

As always, some of them were new-to-me when I scheduled them; and some are old friends. I’m thrilled that they are here and can’t wait for you to see their work! Most of our members will be busy downloading today (or have already finished). We will reveal the contents over the next month.  Why do we do it this way? Dianne Rigdon: A Kit Is Born

DesignersStudio

Dianne Rigdon is one of those designers that will always have a special place in my heart. She was one of the first designers and digi scrappers that I got to know in digiland in 2004. I remember admiring her designs and her layouts as a brand new digital scrapbooker. She once made some super fun, shabby, paisley brushes that I had requested in a forum and I was over the moon with excitement! Over the years, I have been able to work with Dianne at various sites and projects and appreciate her as person as much as I do a designer. I have always loved Dianne’s shabby, weathered style and it is a thrill for me to welcome her  back to The Digi Files again. Let’s take a closer look at “Be Merry” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I was doing some web design. I was looking for resources (pre-google lol) and I stumbled upon digital scrapbooking sites. One was Scrapbook Bytes. I joined up, signed on, plugged in, and the rest is history. 😉 That was 2004 I believe.

inspirestocreate3
Well I love the process so I can keep coming back to it. What gets me started is just some crazy idea will come into my head – either a style I want to emulate or a theme from a magazine or something in real life. I just sort of get a flash and have to quick write it down and pretty soon, if I have the time, a kit is born. 😉

toolbox3
Computer: I’m a PC. 😉 I have a nice big view sonic monitor and a screamin fast gateway fx.

Program: Still using PSCS3.

Camera: Canon. I hardly take pictures anymore. Why is that? I need to get back to it.

OhLife.com is a great way to keep track of life’s daily stories. I haven’t started using it but I love the concept. You get a daily email and you can quickly journal the highlights of your day. This would make it easier to do a day in the life or a photo a day or whatever projects you want to get involved with. All the extra stuff is stripped away – it’s just about the stories. You could use it as a final product or use it for scrap inspiration.

Ok I’ll pick Summer Livin because I adore this wallpaper I made with it – it’s still on my screen.

Aja Abney: There’s No Pressure

DesignersStudio

Every once in a while, there is a designer that I realize has not contributed to The Digi Files before (I didn’t do designer scheduling the first seven months the site was around) and I am embarrassed that we have not had them. Aja Abney is one of those designers!! She is so talented and her eclectic, whimsical, with-a-touch-of-shabbiness style is super fun to create with! I am thrilled and honored to have Aja Abney joining us in The Digi Files (finally) during November! Let’s take a closer look at “365” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I was a graphic designer for several years when I stumbled onto what was then called “computer scrapbooking.” Pretty soon I was hooked! In 2007, I started playing around with making my own products while I was a CT member at Scrapartist. I began selling there in January 2008.

Only scrap when you really feel like it. Remember that this is really all about capturing moments and moods. It’s for yourself first, and then maybe you share with others, maybe not. There’s no pressure.

I am a mother to 2 wonderful kids, Raphael and Bianca, married since 2001. I was born and live in Indonesia – a country with tropical islands and weather. I started digiscrapping end of 2007 and at the end of 2008 I started designing. For me designing was fun because it feels like working and enjoying hobby both in one shot.

howitallstarted3

When I was a kid I love to do DIY, I love making dolls from fabrics, crocheting, flowers arranging, making ornaments from papers/else and even playing with clays. But it was not continued because of growing up and loss in time being a teenager, having a real life, first boyfriend, go to college, finding a job, being engaged, getting married, having kids etc etc.

But then I was introduced by one of my digi friend, she’s a digital scrapbook designer now and it was the perfect timing as I just gave birth to my 2nd child and had a lot of time for myself due to the maternity leave.

I think the good start of a designer is becoming a scrapper first, because the knowledge and feeling of what elements are preferable, which kind of paper is good to be used really inspired the way one becoming a designer.

I was intrigued by how a designer could make a great paper textured, I used to zoom in everything until 100% and look into details. Then I tried to design with taking pictures of elements and extracted them. Unfortunately I feel it’s not suitable with me and started to learn how to draw with Photoshop and it’s not only fun but soon realizing that it’s my style.

inspirestocreate3

My kids are my inspiration, how they interact with us, how they play with their friends, how they love to read, how they act … is a very interesting subject. And second of all, LOVE is truly a good inspiration to create. It sparks every little of mojo in me.

toolbox3

Glue gun, all size and patterned of ribbons, lots of papers, gift wrappers … Oh I love collecting gift wrappers!

Computer: I used Acer laptop and built in pc at home both has 4GB RAM. The laptop is for traveling only and when I was in undeniable mojo to create. But usually I love to sit at home with my PC because it’s connected with all my tools: scanner, tablet, printer.

Program: I used Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Camera: I used a very basic one, Lumix, but I dream to have 500D one day, when the time is on my side 🙂

Anything Else: I used Wacom Intuos 4 to draw and my scanner is Canon Canoscan 5600F

tipstricks

For Scrapping: shadowing is important for me, it takes time to learn how to do it properly, once you find your own shadow style, stick too it.

Designing: find your own style and try to create as many unique elements as possible so the customers won’t find them anywhere but your store 🙂

I started design in the same time I knew digital scrap. My sister introduced me it. So I started creating elements and papers to use in my pages. In 2 months I had an invite from a Brazilian store to start selling my kits…The store is now closed and I am still here. OH! How addict I am.

inspirestocreate3

My inspiration comes from pictures, music, but most of all from real elements. I make, almost always, my own flowers, ribbons, tags, buttons.

toolbox3

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 with 4 GB and an external HD with 1 terabyte. I use Photoshop CS5, Illustrator and Artrage Studio Pro. I have a Point and Shot Canon S95. I use a Bamboo Tablet to draw my flowers!

tipstricks

I have a tip for designers.. When you apply a PNG pattern in a textured paper, the pattern don’t match the texture. It’s just flattened into the paper.. So before everything I choose a texture that I will use. Save it as a PSD file. Then I click on Filter – Texture – Texturizer – Click on the little arrow next right to the box tex and choose “load texture”. Select the PSD file you have saved. Make the scale 100% and Relief around 6. You will have a PNG pattern with a softly texture. Your paper will be more real!! NOTE: I use CS5 Photoshop…

Literally, we were at our local library when dh passed me a copy of Creating Keepsakes magazine, and I was hooked. After paper scrapping for a few months, I discovered digi scrapping and never looked back! At one point I tried designing kits but I was far more interested in making my own layouts and memories. Then I decided to just make templates out of my layouts to support my own digi scrapping hobby, selling from my little blog store, and unbelievably, I am now at Template 283! I think real life and photos keep happening, and that’s how layouts and inspiration keep happening!

tipstricks
I am often asked – how do I come up with the arrangements of the multi-photo templates? I almost never sketch a layout beforehand. When I open up a blank canvas, the first thing I do is to put into it the photos I would like to include in that layout. Next I re-size each photo, depending on which I want to highlight, different sizes create lots of visual interest! Then I look at them to see if there is a mood/feeling in the photos that I want to portray. For example, is a formal sort of layout required? Then I like to line them up. A quiet introspective type of layout usually work with lots of white space. Was it a silly moment being captured, then the photos can be ‘thrown’ askew on the page for that fun element. Or were they grand landscape photos that beg to be cascaded across the page? Then I get to work moving each photo around according to that overall idea – and it always works!

My favourite product is usually my latest, and I do love this set of simple wide-framed photo templates which I made for the photos I took on my iphone – cropping the photos make them intimate and tell a fabulous story!

Our paths crossed again a while back as she started coming on The Digi Show and I have really enjoyed getting to know her better and working with her. She is an amazing and inspiring artist as well as memory keeper. I am thrilled beyond words to finally have Anna joining us in The Digi Files this month! She is an independent digital designer at Oscraps, while creating digital albums and slideshows for Smilebox, and acting as a member of Wacom’s Penscrappers Panel. Formerly a contributing editor for Digital Scrapbooking Magazine, her layouts, designs and articles have been published in a variety of scrapbooking publications such as Creating Keepsakes and Somerset Studios.

Anna says…

I have always been very interested in art and design growing up and had lofty dreams of becoming a fashion designer, but was persuaded to pursue my linguistic abilities, specifically German and French at the University of Leeds in England. I completed a Bachelors Degree in German Language and Literature but feel that I was destined be an artist. I ultimately found my way back to my passion.

I am very athletic and enjoy lifting weights, swimming, biking and running. I like the simple life and also enjoy a glass of red wine, movies that make me laugh, good conversation and just being home with my family.

I played with paper for the first 6 months but struggled with the clutter in the 900 square foot Japanese apartment that we were living in at the time. Digital scrapbooking was just beginning when I saw my first digital layout with blended photos, words and artistic elements. I was immediately charmed by this medium and knew this is how I could combine my love of both my growing family and creating art. There were only a handful of designers at this time, and the more layouts I created, the more requests I received to make my art available for sale. I started small, and have slowly built up my business over the past almost 9 years, which now promotes a no rules and playful artsy approach to modern memory keeping.

I am inspired by anything that is unique, outside-the-box, brightly colored and just plain fun. I am particularly drawn to modern and abstract art. I adore textures, paint and curves. People also inspire me, especially those that do not just take from the world, but give back to it both in actions great and small. I believe to live fully is to make a mark in this world and I would like to think I make a difference in the lives of others by sharing my Art for use in documenting memories.

Computer: I work primarily on a PC desktop (8 GIGS RAM) built my husband. I also have a MacBook Pro G5 (8 GIG RAM) which I also love and tend to use for non-work related tasks. I like to use both platforms independently of one another. It provides a sense of separation between my work and home life.

Programs: I have Adobe Photoshop CS4 on my Mac and use iMovie for my iPhone video clips. On my PC, I use Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Lumapix Fotofusion for scrapbooking. I also use Adobe Illustrator for designing.

Camera: I have a Canon 20D SLR which I typically use with my 50mm 1.4 or 16-35mm 2.8 Wide Angle Lens. I would really like to upgrade my camera at some point, but I’m very much of the mindset that if it is broken I probably can’t justify it. It’s still so much better than the slew of point and shot cameras I have tried or my iPhone 3 that I use for taking photos on the go.

Anything Else: I couldn’t live without my Bamboo Pen and Touch tablet. I have had various tablets all varying in size and price and I still gravitate to the smaller less expensive ones which are portable and easier to use in my opinion. I also like to use my Epson 4990 photo scanner, which allows me to create digital files from life ephemera and from which I am able to create a variety of brushes for my digital pages.

*Think less and do more*
I think this can be a valuable lesson in many aspects of life but particularly so in scrapbooking. It’s so easy to get caught up in what you could or should be doing instead of actually getting it done. The Art of over-thinking can really prevent you from discovering your creative zone, so next time you start your next layout, don’t think about what you’re going to do. Just play. Let your photos and stories, your digital products and tool, the colors and shapes guide you and you’ll end up at a destination you never thought were possible.

My favorite product is always my latest product but if I had to pick one it would be ArtPlay Palette Poppy. It was created by using my favorite colors.

My name is Mirjam and I have been with my best friend and sweetheart Gurt for 12.5 years now. We don’t have children although I have to say that our dog Yuki comes VERY close. I am addicted to crafting in any way, shape or form and have tried many things but truly got addicted to digital scrapping and designing!

“A Perfect Day”

LOMMOur Summer Picnic by Pink Reptile Designs. It’s a scraplift from someone and I am very ashamed to say that I saved the original layout during a Pinterest frenzy and forgot to save the name of the maker.

howitallstarted3
I have always been very creative, even as a child I would make crochet cup and saucers for my barbie dolls (something my grandmother taught me). I drew, painted, knitted, etcetera. I started paper scrapping in 2004 whilst trying to come to terms with the death of our first dog Kenzo and fell head over heels in love with this hobby because it gave me the opportunity to put all my creative quirks into it. I’ve put handmade knitted items on layouts, I machine stitched, hand stitched and painted on layouts, you name it and I probably did it.

In March 2009 I officially turned digital and I loved having this whole new field of techniques and styles to learn and experiment with! Then in October of that same year the Zig Zag Scrap team gave me the opportunity to even further broaden my creative horizon, this time as a designer. I was over the moon!!!

Although I still need to feel paper and/or fabric from time to time I have to say that I couldn’t be happier with this clutter free hobby! Besides a creative outlet it brought me a whole world of digital friendships too! Friends that I cherish just as much as the ones I have in real life!

inspirestocreate3
Well actually I get inspired by the world around me. Anything can trigger my creative juices: a song I hear on the radio, a pattern on a napkin or skirt, a topic in a magazine or a magazine cover, a conversation I hear, you name it. Pinterest is a favorite source of inspiration at the moment. Tons of inspirational pictures at my disposal with just a click of a mouse. So I guess I should say that ‘everyday life’ is my biggest inspiration. On top of that I get brilliant suggestions on kit themes by my fabulous CT-members!

Computer: I use a desktop PC with a 24 inch monitor, that Gurt built for me personally, with an 8 GB RAM. My 64 bits operating system is running off an SSD (solid state disk) and I have almost 3 Terabytes of internal storage space (2.8 to be more precize) of which I am already using 2 thirds (yes, almost all is taken up by photos and scrap related stuff!).

Programs: I mostly use Photoshop CS5 (64bit) and Illustrator CS5. On rare occasions I also use my WACOM Graphire Bluetooth tablet, a Birthday gift from my sweetie who loves everything that has buttons, switches and a manual! I asked for perfume by the way! LOL

Camera: The camera I use is a Nikon D80 and I love that thing to pieces!!

My tip would be to find out everything there is to know about the PS styles that you buy or have bought in the past. Double click on the effect in the layers palette to open up the Layer Style Meny Box and see what every seperate effect that is used in that specific style, does. Drag sliders from left to right, change numbers and curves. Don’t be afraid because even if you save it, it is only saved for the layer you are working on and it will not change the original style. By experimenting you will learn how to adjust and customize styles and you will be able to create better and more lifelike results. Styles are made for general use and therefore will not look good on EVERY shape or form. By learning how to adjust the default settings you can customize your styles to the way YOU want them to look!

Well I have to say that I love what I made for the Daily Digi, that is definitely one of my favorites, as is “Our Summer Picnic”. I love that it looks so ‘summerlike’ plus I am really please with how versatile it is.
