Tickled Pink: I Am A Font Addict

DesignersStudio

I had been “stalking” Becca Bonneville of Tickled Pink for quite a while before inviting her to participate in The Digi Files. I kept seeing her goodies pop up here and there and was excited when I tracked down her store. I love Becca’s word art and the whimsical style of her designs. Let’s take a closer look at “Find the Joy” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I have to admit that I can get easily carried away with scrapping girly pages. I LOVE girly things and find myself having a TON of pages of my daughter and not as much of my sons. When I created the Beep.Bop.Boop kit I thought it would be great to finally scrap something of my youngest son, Ethan.

Just a tip: When using graphics like the robots in this kit, it is fun to incorporate them in different ways like how I have the robot holding the photo in this layout. It gives the graphic more interest (versus just sticking it on the page) and adds a little fun.

I started digital scrapbooking in early 2008. I have never done paper but was beginning to learn Photoshop when a dear friend introduced me to digi. I was hooked immediately and haven’t looked back since.

I started my adventure in designing when I became a part of the Little Dreamer Designs Apprentice program. The Apprentice experience was a fabulous way to get my feet wet. I was able to learn from one of the industry’s most amazing designers, Michelle Coleman, which was such a treat. After LDD I went to Two Peas in a Bucket and am still a designer there.

I have always been a creative person. I get inspired by everything from print ads to fashion. I love playing with colors and drawing in Illustrator.

Camera: I have a Canon Rebel XSi and I also keep a Canon point & shoot in my bag

Anything Else: I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet but am looking to upgrade to the Intuos.

While it is fun to get caught up in using yummy papers and fabulous elements, don’t forget what using a great brush can add to your pages. Brushes are wonderful for adding some depth to your pages and/or interest behind a photo. Have fun playing with splatter brushes or a fun bubble brush.

My favorite product is one of my most recent kits. I teamed up with the amazing Penny Springmann and we created a fun kit made for the everyday. The kit is using some of the hottest colors for spring (which are fabulous!). It was fun making such a happy kit to capture those everyday moments and to work with not only a great designer but a great friend.

Sunshine & Happiness was my first full kit created at Two Peas in a Bucket. It was a dreary winter in Illinois and I was feeling the need for a little sunshine, thus Sunshine & Happiness was born. I wanted the kit to be filled with happy colors and whimsical elements to help chase those winter blues away.

I’ve always loved arts and crafts and when my daughter was born I decided to dabble in paper scrapbooking but it didn’t really seem to click. I gave digital a try next which I did prefer and I got a lot of layouts scrapped but after about 5 months I started to get the pull towards wanting to actually design the product rather than scrap with it. I released my first freebie in Dec 2005 and started selling in Dec 2006. I love designing, it really feeds my creativity. I’m so fortunate that I’ve been able to make a living out of doing something I love so much.

These days it is all about colour. I’m constantly on the look out for colour combinations that will spark an idea for a kit. Colours can really set the mood and feel of a kit so once I’ve got that in place the theme of the kit soon comes together.

Computer: I just got myself a new laptop. It is a HP Pavilion DV7. It runs on a 2Nd Generation Intel Core? I7-2670Qm Processor, 8BG RAM, 17.3″ screen and has a 2GB Graphics card.

Camera: Canon Powershot A610
Anything Else: I have an old Wacom tablet that is no longer compatible with my new laptop so I’ll be looking to upgrade to a Wacom Intuos4 very soon.

tipstricks
As a designer one thing that I have learned over the past couple of years is the importance of learning as much as I can about design. Learning about colour, patterns & typography and how to use them together effectively. Whilst you should never copy another artists work there is nothing wrong with being inspired by them. So my advise is to absorb yourself in design and art of all kinds and learn, learn and then learn some more. My motto for 2011 was Quality over Quantity.

KsQuared: We Have a Lot of Fun

DesignersStudio

KsQuared is the new brand that was created after Kristin Aagard and Kristen Rice started collaborating and found that they work really well together. They create some super fun and happy collections together. We have each of these designers contribute to The Digi Files before, but this is the first time we have had them join us under the KsQuared brand. Let’s take a closer look at “Sunshine through the Rain” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

KsQuared is a collaboration team of two designers, Kristen Rice of K Studio and Kristin Aagard. Kristen Rice lives in Columbus, Ohio and Kristin Aagard lives in Draper, Utah. We both have 3 kids, a hubby and a dog. And we are both work-at-home moms. We met in 2010 and began chatting online occasionally. We decided to collaborate in May, and created our first kit together, Backyard Adventures. We enjoyed working as a team and felt that our designs mesh really well. So we decided to form an ongoing collaborating team, which is how KsQuared was born. We have completed 4 projects together, and have many plans and ideas for future collaborations as KsQuared.

Kristen Rice: I love being able to scrap multiple photos from 1 day on 1 layout, but it can be so challenging to do. I created this layout when creating quick pages for our Love Lives Here collaboration. I also love to layer elements! I used frames in this layout, but the actual photos were not technically framed with those frames. The photos were cropped square, then I just applied a white stroke to them (which can easily be done with the layers palette under layer styles). If you need help learning how to use a quick page, I have a simple tutorial on my site.

LOMM

Kristin Aagard: I scrapped this photo of my daughter on her first day of first grade this year. I tend to pile up and cluster a lot of elements on a page when I scrap. I love the “load files into stack” script that is built into Photoshop because it saves so much time in loading all of the elements and papers onto my layout. I have a tutorial available on my blog if you would like to learn more about using the script.

LOMMBoth of our pages use our collaborations. Kristen Rice used Love Lives Here and Kristin Aagard used Teacher’s Pet.

howitallstarted3
Kristen Rice: I dabbled a bit in paper scrapping before falling head over heels in love with digi. I digi scrapped for a year before becoming a designer.

Kristin Aagard: I began as a paper scrapper, but switched to digi after about two years. I started out in digi creating photo journals, and then started creating elements and papers for layouts.

We met when we were both designing for After Five Designs in 2010 and we’ve been friends ever since. The KsQuared team and our friendship has been formed through lots of giggly IM chats and emails. We think so much a like when it comes to designing, that collaborating feels natural to us!

inspirestocreate3
We have a lot of fun choosing our themes and colors. We make each other laugh a lot when we chat. So getting started on a new project together is probably more time consuming that it needs to be, but it is so much fun!! It’s always the theme is that kicks things off for us and then we search for a color palette that we both love.

Usually one of us will think of a fun theme based on something going on in our lives, or a holiday or something one of our kids is doing. Our kit for The Daily Digi started off as a St. Patrick’s Day theme, but morphed into a spring kit when we both fell in love with a bright and pretty rainbow colored palette.

toolbox3
Computer:

Kristen Rice: I use Windows 7 on a Dell laptop. Since I am also a full-time stay at home mom, this is most convenient because I can stay on top of my designs while I take care of my home and family. I am looking into picking up a new lappy in the near future.

Kristin Aagard: I am just completely loving my new desktop PC that my hubby built for me in December! I have it set up in a corner of my family room, where I can hang out with my family while I design.
Program:

Kristen Rice: I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for designing. I use Mozilla Firefox for browsing the web, and 7-Zip for compressing and extracting folders/files. I also use Lightroom, and Adobe Dreamweaver for Web Design. I also use Adobe Lightroom, and Dreamweaver for Web Design. To keep my computer running smoothly, I use CCleaner and Defraggler. I use Suitcase Fusion to manage and organize my bazillion fonts. And, to keep from losing anything, I use Carbonite for online backup. For renaming files/folders quickly and easily, I use Métamorphose.

Kristin Aagard: I also use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for designing and Mozilla Firefox and 7-Zip. I occasionally use Art Rage. And I love playing with Alien Skin and Filter Forge plug-ins. I use and love NexusFont to categorize my massive font stash. I use a basic renaming program called RName. I am currently using Mozy for online backup. And I cannot work without Pandora blasting away in the background!

Camera:
Kristen Rice: I use and LOVE my Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi.

Kristin Aagard: I am using a Canon PowerShot SX10IS. And I am super jealous of Kristen’s Rebel!! I most frequently use my tiny Nikon Coolpix, which I keep in my purse. I love having a tiny camera with me wherever I go.

Anything Else: We both have a CanoScan 8800F scanner, which we both love, and use all the time. It’s a great little scanner and we totally recommend it! We also both have Wacom tablets but neither of us uses a tablet frequently, as we both prefer to draw using a mouse.

tipstricks
Each time we start a kit, we determine our light source. When we design individually, we each prefer a light source coming from completely opposite directions. For our collaborations, we usually choose the preference of person who remembers to mention it first!! :)

Your layout will look more natural if before you start adding drop shadows to your page, you take a moment to determine the designer’s light source. If the designer has included any shadows in her element layers, or has included a bevel on her elements, try to match your shadow direction as closely as possible. You can adjust your shadow direction by changing the angle on your drop shadow layer style, or by right clicking on the “effects” in your layer styles and adjusting the angle of your global light. The resulting difference in the shadows may be subtle, but you will have a prettier and more natural looking finished page. For our Sunshine through the Rain kit, we used a 35 degree light source.

favoriteproduct3
Our favorite kit together so far is Backyard Adventures. This was our first collaboration together and we had so much fun working on it! It was during the making of this kit that we knew that we would become good friends and that we talked about collaborate together in the future. Backyard Adventures came about because we both have daughters who can be a little bit of a ‘TomBoy” and we thought it would be fun to create a boyish kit for both boys and girls.

ColorCode
popularproduct3
Love Lives Here is our most popular product. It’s a very versatile kit because everyone has photos of family and home they need to scrap. We have both scrapped with the kit several times, and it is really easy and fun to use.

Scrapbookgraphics: A Community Pool

DesignersStudio

Many of you may not know that Scrapbookgraphics was my digital home for my fonts for a while. One of the reasons I chose Scrapbookgraphics was because of their reputation for quality digital products. I really enjoyed my time there and as a nervous, new Studio Girl was always so impressed with how helpful the designers and staff were. Under Maya’s leadership, Scrapbookgraphics is still well-known for their quality and diversity in styles and I am thrilled to be welcoming them back to The Digi Files again!

I (Maya) had been scrapping using my computer for a couple of years before the term “digital scrapbooking” had even been coined and I was a part of the very first online digital scrapbooking community as a design team member back in January of 2003. Back at that time there were no products available to download to use on our pages, and so whenever we created a scrapbook page, we all made our own backgrounds and elements. Design team members started donating the elements they created into a community pool to share with others. It didn’t take long to realize that the community couldn’t get enough of these elements when almost every page going through the galleries would be embellished with the same group of clips, buttons and bows. And, the community was growing at such an amazing rate that it struck me that there was great market potential.

I launched Scrapbookgraphics in August of 2003 and released my first collection of products on a CD. As an afterthought, I offered downloads of the collection to customers awaiting their package in the mail. This ended up being my inspiration to offer page kits and element packages in the Scrapbookgraphics download shop. Success was immediate and beyond my wildest imagination. I had no idea at the time that my beloved hobby would open the door to a brand new career for me.

The late, great Joseph Campbell said, “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.” I have experienced this truth directly through digital design and Scrapbookgraphics and out of my excitement and gratitude I hope to continue to inspire others to this realization for many years to come.

tip

Do you have a tip for someone that is thinking about selling their designs?
You usually only have one chance to make a good impression, so don’t make your design debut before you have developed the proper skill and understanding of the industry you are looking to become a part of. If I were just starting out as a designer now, I would hold off selling my designs until I had honed my skills and felt ready to present my portfolio to the stores that I held in the highest regard and thought best suited my style. Never be afraid to reach for the stars for fear of rejection, and even if you are told “no thank you”, don’t take it personally. No doesn’t mean that you are not talented or respected as a designer. It is simply just a matter of finding the right store-to- designer fit, and timing.

I can’t speak for the other shops, but at Scrapbookgraphics I am more than happy to consider applications from brand new designers. If I feel that their products can hold up to the quality and creativity of the other designers in our store, and that their design style would be appealing to our customer base, I would be thrilled to help launch their design careers.

However, I do not often offer guided internships, so designers who approach me should already know what is expected of them with regard to quality, industry standards, copyright issues, and have a general grasp of the investment required for self-promotion. I also think it is important that new designers not get accustomed to using a lot of Commercial Use products. CU products can be excellent time saving tools if used properly but generally speaking a designer should have the skill set to make most of those tools themselves and if they do use CU products, they should be altered sufficiently as to be unrecognizable to their original form.

Lastly, I get most excited when I discover designers who have the creativity and imagination to be unique, carve out their own niche in the market.

favorite
It is a little difficult for me to talk about my favorite or the most popular store-wide collaborations because our store collabs are somewhat different than they are at other shops. We have grown to a point where our variation of styles eventually made it very difficult for us to put together a really cohesive store-wide collaboration. We can do it, but we realized that it was much more fun and inspiring for us to work in smaller collaborations of 3 or 4 designers, often who share similar styles but not always. This is how our Studio Mix collections were born. We are mixing and mashing different small groups of designers for each Studio Mix and we have been having a real blast working together this way.

I organize the groups, and then assign team leads for each group. The team lead assesses the strengths of her group of designers and then comes up with a theme, colour pallet and a vision board meant to inspire the collection. And inspired we have been! From the get-go with this project the designers have found it extremely difficult to limit their contributions to a kit sized project and so each kit has a series of add-on packs that we have titled our B-Sides.

So rather than highlighting one product that may exclude many of our fabulous designers. I would simply like to invite the reader to browse our Studio Mixes found in the Studio Girls Collective shop. We would love to hear which designer combos YOU enjoy the most and are always open to receiving combination requests as well.

I am kinda country in the way that I live and I live in Southeast Georgia along the coastline in a touristy town. My family is my greatest source of joy and pride in my life from my husband of 8 years, my 7-year-old holy terror of a boy (Arthur), my 11 month old princess (Esther Rose), and my 9 year old, faithful pooch, Cracker. I live simply on a modest budget but try to provide anything my family needs. I live day to day never knowing what to expect and when life throws me curve-balls, I try to take it with grace.

A few other random bits of information: I am one of 8 children. I have sisters named Hope and Charity. I play the flute, piccolo, viola and a slight bit of piano. I never lived in one place very long as a child and I attended 4 different high schools.

This layout was created because of my obvious love for my children. When I brought home my daughter from the hospital in March, 2011, my son was 6 years old. The very day we came home, he picked her up from her crib and I turned around and heard “Mama, look what I’ve got.” Fear struck my very core as I looked. He had picked up his 5 pound baby sister and I immediately rushed to assist him. He wanted to be able to love her and hold her and he had an immediate bond. When these pictures were scrapped, he already had a place in his heart and I was glad to see that bond forming between the two.

In October 2005, I discovered digital scrapbooking and didn’t have any money to spend so after failed attempts at trying to get on a creative team, I started creating my own products. They were horrible and I kept on. Horrible became bad, bad became sub par and sub par became kinda cute and now I think I have products I can be proud of as I have found my niche. It has been 6 years of designing and I still love it.

inspirestocreate3
My family, they are my inspiration to make layouts so it was only reasonable that they inspired my designs as well.

toolbox3
Computer: I use an PC with Windows Vista (I know I need to upgrade, haha) and I have about 5GB of memory and unfortunately only 300GB of HD space. I really could use more. I back my info up on a 500GB external so I won’t make the mistake of losing everything like I did once before. I also have a 19inch LCD monitor and I don’t think I could stand to have a bigger one.
Program: Photoshop CS3 extended. I love Illustrator too.
Camera: I own a Canon Rebel XT. I purchased it my first year of designing. I still love it.
Anything Else: I use a tablet for everything, included as a mouse. I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet. It was actually a very generous gift from a digi scrapper when mine broke. Probably one of the nicest things someone could have ever done for me.

tipstricks
I always make sure to layer my items appropriately as if the images were real. I consider wordart to be more of a “rub-on” so I always put these wordart behind main images. I then consider my photo placements, any paint, glitter, or 2-d elements I want to add and stitches. I start layering items from depth so that I have a realistic feel to my layouts and the more 3-d the element, the softer and larger the shadow.

favoriteproduct3
Seaside Shanty is my favorite kit because it is both elegant and playful. I had such a great and easy time putting it together and of course the wordart just tops it off. My environment shaped this kit. Since we love on the coastline,we do visit the beach and enjoy everything that comes along with it. Sand, sea, waves and even ocean life. We have swimmed so close to dolphins and we love it.

ColorCode
popularproduct3
When I look at this kit, I remember when I put it together. It just flew together in a couple of days. I was so inspired and it came to life before my eyes. The colors were appealing, the creative whimsical elements and it had a “Fancy Nancy” feel. I really think that is why everyone else likes this kit too. The easier the kits come together, the more popular they are.

Misty Cato: A Great Deal of Coffee

DesignersStudio

Misty was one of the first designers to join The Digi Files when she appeared in the second issue. She appeared a second time with her designs a while back. When Misty said she would love to be a template contributor, I jumped at the chance to have her join us again. Misty is great source of Photoshop knowledge (check out her great tips below) and I really enjoy working with her each time I get the chance! I love the layered yet linear style of Misty’s templates, they really fit with my natural scrapping style. Let’s take a closer look at “Side by Side Templates 2″ that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I love these two spreads because I think I was successful in allowing the photos to be the governing design point. Everything from the composition to the colors, to the element choices were selected based on how they enhanced the photos and story. I think the process led to layout spreads that really captured my son’s soccer season and a special ‘everyday moment’ shared with my daughter.

LOMM
howitallstarted3
I started digital scrapbooking almost seven years ago shortly after the birth of my son. I was looking for a way to document my new baby but I am hopeless when it comes to glue and scissors. Digital scrapbooking seemed like a perfect fit. At the time, designing gave me a creative outlet outside of my new duties as a stay-at-home-mom.

inspirestocreate3
Usually my own photos serve as my inspiration. I usually create templates based on my own pages, or pages i need to get done. About a year or so ago I came to the conclusion that I am happiest about my layouts when the faces of my family and loved ones are big and jumping out at me. Since then I’ve tried to focus on making my photos the center of my pages and commit to meaningful journaling on every page. Most of my templates have a similar emphasis.

My own photos also inspire many of the color palette in my kit designing. I’ve always been a matchy-match type of person, so I want my scrapping supplies to either match or be a nice complement with the colors in my photos. If I can’t find the color scheme and theme I want, I create it.

toolbox3
Computer: I use a Mac OS X, 3.4 GHz intel Core, 4GB RAM
Program: Photohop CS5 and Illustrator CS5
Camera: Cannon XSi
Anything Else:

I can’t even work without my tablet. I think I’ve been through three of them since I started designing. Right now I have a Wacom Bamboo; the little one.

What else? hmm … a great deal of coffee usually helps.

tipstricks
In can be tricky to create readable journaling on a patterned paper. Often I use layer styles in Photoshop to enhance the visibility of my journaling. I’ve put the samples on solid kraft backgrounds so you can see the effect clearly, but I often use one of these methods when I am trying to journal on a photo or paper of varying shades.

TIP 1: Add a Stroke
Adding a stroke places a line around the perimeter of your object. When applied to text, this style thickens the letters.

LOMM

To create this effect, make sure your text is the active layer by clicking on it in the Layers Palette. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Stroke. Use the following settings:

Size: 1 (you can increase this as desired)
Position: Center
Blend: Normal
Opacity: 100
Fill Type: Color
Color: Choose the same color as your text

Click ‘Ok’ to apply the layer style.

LOMM

TIP 2: Add an Outer Glow
Adding an outer glow creates a ‘halo’ of light around your text. This is especially effective when your text is dark.

LOMM

To create this effect, make sure your text is the active layer by clicking on it in the Layers Palette. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow. Use the following settings:

Blend Mode: Screen
Opacity: 100
Noise: 0 (although you can play with this as desired)
Color: I usually stick with the default pale yellow, but you can play with white or other light, soft colors
Technique: Softer
Spread: 0
Size: 250
Contour: leave at the default
Range: 50
Jitter: 0

Click ‘Ok’ to apply the layer style. If you want to make this effect subtler, lower the opacity slider. If you want to create an even bolder effect, apply the style and then duplicate the layer (Layer>Duplicate Layer).

LOMM

TIP 3: Add a Color Burn
Adding a color burn drop shadow creates a darker around your text. This is especially effective when your text is a light color.

LOMM

To create this effect, make sure your text is the active layer by clicking on it in the Layers Palette. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow. Use the following settings:

Blend Mode: Color Burn
Opacity: 100
Angle: any
Distance: 0
Spread: 0
Size: 250
Contour: leave at the default setting
Noise: 0 (although you can play with this as desired)

Click ‘Ok’ to apply the layer style. If you want to make this effect subtler, lower the opacity slider. If you want to create an even bolder effect, apply the style and then duplicate the layer (Layer>Duplicate Layer).

LOMM

The magazine templates are my current favorite just because they are so fun. Every single layout I’ve seen with them makes me smile. My kids love their personalized covers and keep asking me if they can read the rest of ‘their magazines’. When I tell them it’s just a cover, they say I need to write them the rest of the magazine.

ColorCode
popularproduct3
I released these templates over a year ago and was surprised at how many people were looking for layout ideas for big photos. As I said before, pages in which my family and loved ones are looking back at me, big and in color, make me happy and I think that approach resonated with a lot of scrappers. Since then I’ve done two more sets and more ‘Go Large’ templates remains one of my most requested items.

One Little Bird Designs: Totally Random Things

DesignersStudio

Exactly two years ago this month, a brand new designer joined us in The Digi Files. I was surprised, at that point, to find out that Peppermint of One Little Bird had only be selling her goodies for a month and a half, but I knew she was going to be a hit! It has been my joy to work with and get to know Peppermint both here at The Daily Digi and through recording The Digi Show. I am always awestruck by Peppermint’s designs! I love the retro, clean look of her designs and I especially love her doodles and word art! Let’s take a closer look at “Narrative” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

3 Totally Random Things About Me:

1. When I was a kid I could do an almost superhuman volume of sit-ups at a time so my dad would constantly challenge people sit-up contests ON MY BEHALF. Unsolicited contest organization, mind you, with no prize package for the winner. Sometimes he would even have me do them while I hugged a 10lb. free weight to my chest, and it wasn’t until I was an adult and was telling this story to someone that I ever questioned where the free weight always seemed to come from.

2. I don’t eat anything mint flavored. Feels like cannibalism. It’s a good thing my name isn’t Cupcake Granberg, or French Fries Granberg, because that would really impact two of my favorite food groups.

3. I am nerdy for spreadsheets. Man … I love spreadsheets. I was just telling someone a few weeks ago that my love for spreadsheets runs so deep that it would seem to be a foregone conclusion that I still lived in my mom’s basement (I don’t) and had a questionable track record with hygiene (I’m squeaky clean). But THAT’s how much I love spreadsheets.

Inspiration comes from the oddest places, this idea was ignited within me when I saw a Jeep commercial using this “genetically engineered to be legendary” tagline. It was such a strong statement, I had to put it on a page.

LOMM
howitallstarted3
I tried my hand at paper scrapbooking after my son was born in 2000 – I had toyed with it a little bit prior to that but the desire to curate moments from our lives in some way went from a casual idea to a ferocious need after the baby. I didn’t last long as a paper scrapper for a number of reasons, but the primary one was that the cost, the mess and my limited access to cool supplies at the time really kept me from enjoying the process.

I started scrapbooking digitally in 2005 but didn’t really begin participating in the community and scrapping on a regular basis until 2007. In 2007 I went all in!

I started designing in January of 2010 and moved to Oscraps in April of 2010. About 6 months ago I re-arranged our lives by leaving my full-time job and I still wake up almost every morning and marvel at the fact that I’m able to call this my job. Stress and all, my hardest days here are still far more rewarding than my best days anywhere else.

inspirestocreate3
My answer to this hasn’t changed over the years: The Internet. How did people do anything before the Internet? I will occasionally find myself drawn to an ad in a magazine or something that catches my eye at a store. But most of the time? It’s something on the Internet. Doesn’t everything wind up here eventually?

toolbox3
Computer: I have an HP Desktop running Windows 7 64-bit with 8GB of RAM and 3TB of hard drive space (across two drives). I keep all of my product files, photos and scrapbooking materials on the second drive because it makes back-ups easier. I back that drive up in real-time to a 2TB external drive on-site and off-site to CrashPlan’s servers. I have some real trust issues with hard drives at this point in my life! I have dual 26″ monitors, which were my husband’s suggestion when setting up my office and I thought he was just being “a man” about that – but it may have been the greatest idea he ever had in his life (aside from marrying a real catch like me).

Program: Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, ACDSee and Lightroom 3 (for photo organization and some post-processing).

Camera: I have an old-school Nikon D50 and I almost always have my 55mm lens on it and my Nikon SB-600 flash. I know people hate flashes in general, and I’m no exception, but that SB-600 saves my bacon all the time. I bounce it off the ceiling or off a wall and never have any issues with it.

Anything Else: A Wacom Intuos4 tablet.

tipstricks
I use the same couple of Photoshop actions for black and white conversions on my photos without exception and they all create a very classic, cool-toned black and white images. Since I gravitate towards creamy neutrals and warm tones a lot on my pages I like to change the tone of the photo subtly to match my page without abandoning my favorite actions – and the quickest way I’ve found to do this is to add a layer above my photo, sample a warmer tone from my background paper or an element with the eyedropper and flood fill that new layer with it. Then I clip it it (CTRL+G) to my photo layer, change the blend mode to Soft Light (or Color, or Overlay, I try a few) and then I adjust the opacity down to 20-30% until it’s a subtle color cast that takes the edge off my overly cool photo. I like to be matchy matchy like that.

favoriteproduct3
This is like asking me to pick my favorite child (which is one of my primary arguments for only having one!) I really enjoyed the process of creating this kit, though. And I have fond memories of my neighbors watching me wander around my backyard looking for the perfect leaf.

Hands down, it’s the drop shadows! Every time another product starts to gain on them there will be a fresh wave of interest in them. Creating them was the easy part, I couldn’t have foreseen that troubleshooting them for PSE users would be a two year affair. I only recently (as in end of January) managed to conquer Photoshop Elements and offer a way for PSE 7-10 users to get them installed in their own category in the Effects panel. And PSE users around the world rejoiced! (Or at least I assume they did…)

The Hidden Heart: I’m 15 Years Old

That’s a looooooooong story! hehe I have been designing for a little more than 2 years. I guess… =/ And I’m scrapping for almost 3 years! (OMG! I’m doing this for a long time!) Well, my sister, Ju Kneipp, has a friend, Kel (my friend too. LOL), that was starting on digiscrap, and she was invited to be Kel’s partner on a new blog called Boutique Freebies (or something like that), that turned to be Boutique Cute Dolls. They created a lot of freebies and stuff. I had seen everything they were doing and I fell in love with scrapbook and I decided to get in! I started creating some pages and posting at DigiscrappersBrasil, but a few months later I decided to post in other galleries, like MSA, DST, and others. In Feb ’09, I created my first freebie on my personal blog and then I tried a lot of designer calls, or designer challenges (to become a designer of the challenging shop) but I received a lot of NOs! But I didn’t give up! My sister and her friend, Kel, saw my wish to be a designer and invited me to become a designer of Boutique Cute Dolls. I accepted the invite, of course! hehe I created a kit and an alpha and then I decided to leave Boutique Cute Dolls and follow the “solo” career… as Re Kneipp Designs. Then, I tried a designer call of Sunshine Studio Scraps and I received an YES! So, I stayed at SUN for 6 months, I guess, and then I started selling at DigiscrappersBrasil, for 6 months or 1 year, I don’t know… After those months as a DSB designer, I was invited to be a ScrapbookGraphics designer! OMG! That was AWESOME ! After a few months I was uninspired and took a break. A few months later, I sent Amy (A5D owner) an email asking her a spot at After Five and she said YES! And now, i’m designing there (as The Hidden Heart) and I’m loving it! Everyone is awesome at A5D!
inspirestocreate3
Everything! A music, a movie, my friends, my family, my dreams (I create a lot of my kits based on my dreams… or nightmares… LOL), and more… What inspires me to create is life!

Camera: I have a Nikon D3000. Isn’t mine, but I use it! LOL

Anything Else: Bamboo Tablet
EHD (but I don’t use it…)
tipstricks
I have a lot of tips to you give to you! But I’ll give only 2 this time! hehe

1st) The use of shadows! One of the most important things in a page, for me, is the use of shadows. You can use styles or create your owns. But don’t forget to use shadows! hehe To get a good shadow effect on my elements, I like to use a shadows style, then, I create a separate layer with the shadow, and then I improve it going to Edit>Transform>Warp… I use this trick to ribbons and other elements to get a 3D effect. hehe

2nd) If I use a commercial use product in my kits, I try to change it to get more original… I try to give my style in it. I don’t like designers that only change the colors or something…

favoriteproduct3
I like it because it’s a happy kit with a lot of cute animals that I love! I love the colors, elements, papers,… everything! hehe What makes it special is that I made almost everything in it… except the real elements.

ColorCode
popularproduct3
It’s popular because of the colors, the dolls, the theme… What inspired it was the season, winter and the peppermint cocoa! LOL Laurie Ann chose the colors… but everything, including the colors, was inspired in the winter! What makes this product special is that we put all our talent and passion in it… and I think this is being recognized. Thank you all for getting this kit!!!! <3

I wanted to scrap a couple of pages about my kids’ love for their stuffed animals – Max has Giraffie and Zoë has Ellie the Elephant. This is actually the idea that inspired my featured kit – trying to figure out a theme/color scheme that would work for both boys and girls so I could display the pages together in their album. I love this page because the focus is just on this well-loved stuffed animal without a lot of other “stuff”. I do a lot of busy art journal-type pages and ATC’s, so this one was a nice break from that. I’m working on Ellie’s page now.

I started designing scrapbook stuff in 2004, just after my daughter was born. I love Photoshop, and designing fun stuff that I could use to decorate my photos AND sell as well seemed like a pretty good deal to me. I don’t scrap very much at all (not anything I would display in any gallery anyway) so for me it’s really always been about designing and mucking around in Photoshop.

inspirestocreate3
That’s a hard question! I think I just HAVE to create, because it’s who I am. I bet most people reading this can relate. I am not the most prolific digi designer (I’m working on it), but I am constantly busy with other creative stuff in just about every area of my life.

toolbox3
Computer: All I know is I have a computer. Beyond that, I am oblivious. The front of my tower tells me it’s an HP Workstation, if that helps. I have only one monitor but it’s pretty big, so that’s OK.

Program: I’m using Photoshop CS5 Extended. Illustrator too. That’s about it.

Camera: Some sort of Canon Digital Rebel. I’m no photographer, so this works just fine for me. That’s why we have Photoshop.

Anything Else: I could not live without my Wacom tablet!! I also have a lovey and gigantic Epson printer, a CanoScan 8800, and my most recent acquisition is a KNK Maxx die cutter, which is a ton of fun.

tipstricks
I recently went to a Photoshop workshop in Boston and the presenter gave us this cool tip for photographers. You probably already do some version of this but as I’ve said, I’m no photographer so it’s all new to me. I like this tip because we love to travel and always forget where exactly we took the photos. So, what this guy does (darn I forget his name) is at the beginning of a shoot in one place, he takes a photo of his fist in the air. As he’s leaving that place, he takes another photo of his fist. Somewhere in the middle, he takes a picture of a sign that says the name of the place (or you can do what I do – write it on a napkin). If you do this, you’ll not only have a quick visual reference when you’re looking at a zillion thumbnails (the fist in the air is easy to spot), you’ll ALSO know that every photo between the fists is from the same place, which is named somewhere on a napkin or a sign in one of those photos. I thought that was a neat trick.

I really love all of the Altered 365 stuff, but this one is my favorite. The colors actually coordinate with one of our Catwalks at CatScrap – I didn’t even choose them! I just got lucky that they worked so well for this collection. I’ve been doing a lot of ATC’s and I just find that all the little painty doodads in this kit work well for those. I don’t usually go for bright-and-cheery so I’m a little surprised that this tured out to be my favorite. :)

After all these years, my Worn Photo Overlays remain my all-time best sellers. All of them. I chose this one because it’s the one I use the most. but they all are equally popular. The first ones were released in a kit called Autumn Decay in fall of 2007, and people started emailing right away to ask for more of them. Then, Dagmar Neumann stretched one out to place over a background paper (did you know she was the first?), the crowd went wild, and the rest is history. I think that’s a cool story.
