Something cool you really have to see!

Wooden Paper

WOOD-TITLE

Title graphic supplies: The Daily Digi member exclusive kit My Life At Home; font is Courier

In the April 2012 edition of The Digi Files, designer Krystal Hartley included a kit with an awesome wooden paper, which I used on one of my layouts:

2011-08-Home-web

I hadn’t experimented with wooden paper backgrounds very much before but I love the look when I see pages featuring them in the galleries. Realistic wooden backgrounds are a great complement to digital elements and the faux-wood doodled backgrounds are a fun choice for lively layouts.

I found some stunning examples in the galleries of these wooden papers in action:

Enjoy-my-boys

The paint splattered on the wood and the sort of haphazard cluster of papers and elements make this page look casual and almost accidental, even though it is artfully arranged.

Doodled wooden paper backgrounds are a fresh and fun take on the wooden page trend. I love how the wood lines add a sense of movement and fun to this adorable page.

It looks like celeste could have placed her notebook (with the cute dog photo) and set it on the ground and taken a photo of it. This page has such a great realistic feel to it.

I love how the wooden background here is so subtle, allowing the papers and words to be the stars.

The wooden paper background is here, but it is mostly covered. It makes the perfect neutral background for this elaborately layered design. Stunning!

Isn’t this one cool? I love how the industrial staples really look like they could be going into the wood below.

All of the layouts above are linked to their credits.

There are many, many kits available in digi stores that have one or two wooden paper backgrounds included. Here are a few products that are focused on these papers:

I hope that you found some inspiration for using wooden paper backgrounds! Is this a trend that you’ve tried? We’d love if you’d share a link to your pages as additional inspiration for readers. This is such a fun trend!

Using a smartphone to make more time (and material) for scrapping

phones copy

When I can do more on the go with my smartphone, that frees up my time on the computer for digi scrapping! One of the best thing about phone apps is that they let you do complex tasks while you are using your phone.

When I’m waiting to pick up my daughter from class she takes outside of our home, I end up with small blocks of time ranging from 5-15 minutes. When I’m sitting in a doctor’s waiting room I can usually find at least 10 minutes of time. I used to read magazines in the doctor’s office and sometimes I had a few stashed in my car. That was all before I carried a smart phone. Now I kind of get excited when I have a few minutes of waiting time that I can use to catch up on things with my phone.

I seem to always start with my email. I really don’t like it when there’s a red number next to the mail icon so I like to get rid of it by reading my messages. I get a lot of email! Here’s a link to a post I wrote explaining how I deal with my ever-overflowing email inbox. I love powering through emails I don’t need to answer when I’m on my phone. I usually leave the ones where I need to respond with more than one sentence until I can work at my laptop. All no response or short response emails are processed with my phone when I have a few spare minutes.

image

I like to check in on my calendar for the day and be sure I’m remembering everything I have scheduled. I also like to look ahead to the next few days. I use Google calendar for everything, even to keep track of blog posting schedules.

7159951738_bae1059089_b

My next order of business is managing any photos I’ve taken recently with my phone. I have a few favorite apps that I seem to always come back to. We’ve either written about most of these apps here or talked about them on The Digi Show so I’ll link up to all those references for each app. This is one of the best things about having a smart phone – you can take, edit, and upload pictures wherever you are!

7160732338_96297f40cd_b

Photos – comes with the iPhone and the app I use the most because I like to do the simple auto-enhance fix on all my photos. This is the way I edit most of my phone photos because it’s quick and easy! I only use the other editing apps if I have a little more time.

6982530522_b1273ef10b_b

Photo 365 – I love this app (thanks to Steph!) for keeping track of my daily photo project. I add the photos to the calendar in this app whenever I have some time with my phone. At the end of the month, I upload the entire calendar image to my Flickr account.

6982523294_f88361c5fe_b

FlickitPro (the free version is also good) – I’m constantly uploading my phone photos to my Flickr stream with this easy-to-use app. I love to get them on Flickr as soon as possible so I have a backup, and so I can share them with my friends and family.

7160447410_72bdb17013_b

Flickr – I use this app for browsing through my own photos as well as keeping up with what my contacts are sharing. See my post about Flickr to find out why I love the place so much!

7160456978_afb230da31_b

Snapseed – a favorite app of mine for when I want to get creative with my photos. I talked about Snapseed in this episode of the Digi Show because it’s one of my go-to editing apps.

7160485370_d4cf928482_b

Camera+ is another favorite app for editing and creative filters. I’m constantly trying to decide if this or snapseed is my favorite one for filter effects. I guess it’s a tie!

6982529296_443876f3f2_b

Instagram is a new addiction for me. I love to turn photos into quirky little instagram squares and share them in my instagram feed. I also can upload them directly to Flickr (or a variety of social network sites) at the same time. I love the interaction from other instagram users and I get so much inspiration from the photos I see there!

6982527268_91981c6027_b

7160526120_88881dd3de_b

Incredibooth is an app that I use when I’ve got my phone and a few minutes to capture a fun memory. My son and I like to play around with it when we are waiting in the car for my daughter.

7160618052_b0488742a6_c

Notica is an app that I found because of a listener pick from this episode of The Digi Show and I use it all the time now!

7160699138_8bc3e47f1b_b

I like that I can generate journaled images to use later on for blog posts or scrapbook pages.

7149873075_40f321f391_b

After I tackle my photo-related projects on my phone, I give myself permission to do more of the “time hog” type of activities if I still have some time to spend. This is when I delve into facebook, pinterest, hootsuite (twitter), and catching up on blogs with feedly. If I started with these activities during my waiting times, I would never get around to the photo editing and uploading. I don’t feel like I’m wasting time to use these apps because I’m able to gather a lot of inspiration, ideas, and keep in touch with people I care about. I do feel like it’s easy to spend too much time in these apps though so I’m glad that I make myself work through email, calendar, and photo management first. Also, when I use these apps on my phone instead of my computer, I always spend less time. It’s too easy to sit at the computer and hang out on Twitter or Facebook for long periods of time and I’d rather use the time on my laptop for scrapbooking.

image

Of course, I can do even more cool things on my phone like; exploring Daily Digi inspiration, reading, listening to audiobooks & podcasts, surfing websites, and playing games – there are almost endless possibilities! More than anything else, I really appreciate that I’m utilizing small pockets of found time to accomplish many tasks using only my phone.  I sure am grateful for all the apps out there that help me make the most of my scrapbooking time and material!

My Secret Weapon for Using Alphas

image

I love the look of alphas on a layout, but placing them can be time consuming and monotonous! I have a secret weapon for placing alphas that has changed my scrapping life! It’s the Title Builder Scripts by Anna Forrest (for PSE and PSCS).

These scripts work similarly to actions. You install them differently (Anna includes instructions), and run them from a different menu, but once you select them, they do their thing (see the video below). Actions can only include menu commands in Photoshop, Scripts can actually include more. I can’t imagine the brain power needed to make these babies work!

Once the script is installed, I go to Edit> Scripts> AFD Title Builder:

ScreenClip(228)

The following dialogue box opens up:

ScreenClip(229)

I type the word in the title box, navigate to the folder that contains the alpha in the Image Folder box. Then, in the lowercase box, I just deleted the a so only the part of the file name visible is the filename that will be the exact same on each letter. If I would have used capitals and or numbers, I would have changed those as well. Then, I clicked OK and the script did it’s thing. Watch the video below to see the script in action.

Here are a few layouts I’ve used this script on:

Cluster and Paper Stack Templates

Title

As a customer, I am constantly amazed by the creativity and inventiveness of digital scrapbook designers. There are products available now that I would never have dreamed of when I first started digi scrapping in 2006.

One product that I have been enjoying are the cluster and paper stack templates. For some reason, I’m finding it hard to describe them, but I’ll give it a try: they are layered templates where the designer provides the layers for the cluster or paper stack but it is not a “complete” layout on its own. So, the templates are a good starting point for a layout and allow each scrapper to creatively “fill in the page”.

Samples of Cluster and Paper Stack Templates

A “picture is worth a thousand words” so here is a sampling of the cluster and paper stack templates that I found in stores:

Block Templates #12 by Ana Reis

going in circles: clusters

All Stacked Up [Backgrounds Vol1 CU/PU]

Products In Action

The reason I like these templates is that they let me quickly start a page while at the same time giving me enough room to put my own creative touch on the page.

Here’s one paper stack product and a page I made with it:

Stacked: Straight

LittleThings_web3

I used a paper cluster template by Chelle’s Creations (shown above) as a starting point for the layout. I loved that I was able to quickly drop the paper strips onto my page and start clipping papers. I resized some paper strips and removed some layers – they’re very versatile tools.

Here’s another sample:

Quickly stacked 1 templates PU

2012-02-04-WritingValentines-web

For the page above, I started with a paper stacker template by ad77 designs and then added photos and other embellishments to suit the photos. It came together very quickly.

I used ad77 design’s paper stack template again for the following page, where I combined it with a white-space style template by Zinnias and Swallowtails.

2012-02-05-Sweet-web

I think there is a place in my digi supplies for both full templates and cluster and paper stack templates. They are excellent page starters for when I need a little help with capturing my family stories.

Have a great weekend!

iPads, Vegas, and Getting Around

image

A couple of weeks ago, I was able to join almost 100 digital scrapbookers in Vegas for Digiscrapapalooza! Among those there were a lot of members, readers, and listeners to The Digi Show. I was also fortunate to meet our team members (from L to R above) Jenn Lindsey, Katrina Kennedy, and Trina (I’m in the solid black). It was so fun to spend time visiting with my team members about digital scrapbooking, photography, and real life stuff!

I was joined by my real life, digi scrapping friend, Alicia and can you believe, I don’t have any photos of us together!?

I got photos taken with lots of readers and listeners (I’m still hoping they will send me copies…pretty please). One of our readers, members, and listeners was quickly loved by all. Joyce is hilarious and had me laughing so hard, that not only did my mouth hurt, but my whole head! It was a joy to meet and visit with her.

I took Katrina’s photography class and finally, finally moved my camera to manual mode! Woot!

image

We recorded a live Digi Show my last night there. It was a fun show, filled with lots of questions for designers and business owners. I felt a bit frazzled taping the show live, especially with that many panelists. Liz Moss was on the green team with me (a big thanks to Chelle for all of her work on our team stuff) and so I accidentally introduced Liz Albers (Scrapping with Liz) as Liz Moss (sigh).

It was a super fun time and I am so glad I was able to go. A big THANKS to Kami, Mel, and the Scrap Orchard crew for going above and beyond. Also, thanks to Chelle and the rest of the GREEN TEAM! It really is fun to put faces and voices with all of the names!

Yesterday, I sent an email to members that the Playbook is now available in iBooks format! I’m really excited about this addition to our lineup for members. The iBooks Playbook can be downloaded directly in the members area from your iPad and will open directly in iBooks.

We are also working on a Kindle Fire and Nook Color versions.

image

Last week, I shared some tips with our members on getting around the site. These were things that our members had asked for in a recent members survey, but are already features on the site. I figured if our members don’t know about them, then our readers might not either. So, I thought I would share them here too.

First up, I’ve had several requests for an easy way to access the designers features at the end of the month. This will help you be able to get to those designers’ coupons you all love!

ScreenClip2204

If you go to the home page and click on “designers” that will take you to a page that has previews for all of the items included in The Digi Files. They are added as they are revealed on the home page. They link back to the original designers’ features with those coupons at the end.

ScreenClip2273

ScreenClip2266

Another member mentioned that they wish there was a way to see all of the designers that had contributed to The Digi Files in the past. They have come to trust our recommendations and are overwhelmed by the amount of designers to choose from. If you go to the home page and click on “Past Designers” in the side bar, you will find a list of all of the designers that have contributed by the month they were featured (most recent on top). The list is linked to their stores and we try to keep it as up-to-date as possible, but with over 170 different designers, it isn’t always perfect! Winking smile

ScreenClip2213

Someone said they would love a way to pull up all of Katrina’s photography posts. To pull up all of the posts by any author, just click on their name under the post title. I had my programmer set it up so the author names/links come through your reader as well.

ScreenClip2223

We also have all of the posts categorized. All of Katrina’s Photography posts can be found in the photography category. There are a few posts by other authors in that category as well.

ScreenClip2234

From the home screen, if you click on “tutorials” you will find a lot of different topics of posts, tutorials, resources, and information:

ScreenClip2243

One more way you can find past posts, resources, and information is our search tool. We actually have paid for Google to run our little search bar so we can provide you with the best results possible and it does a pretty good job:

ScreenClip2253

Don’t be afraid to click around the site and see what you can find. You just might be surprised what you discover!

Inner Shadow

Title

Sometime last year, I purchased some templates that had a paper cut-out. I thought it was a neat effect, so I made some pages with cut-outs… I loved the effect, but it turns out I wasn’t using the best technique for it.

The “Old Way” of Cutting Holes in Paper

Now, don’t pay too close attention here because I’m going to tell you a much better way after! I used to (1) create a shape, like the rectangle in the sample below, (2) select the shape with ‘marching ants’, (3) select the paper layer in the layer palette, and then (4) hit delete to cut a hole in the paper in the form of the selected shape, and (5) hide the shape itself. It works perfectly fine, except that the cut out hole cannot be moved. So, if the cut-out would have looked better an inch to the left, the “hole” would have to be repaired or, more likely, the cut paper would have to be deleted and replaced with a new paper and the cut re-done.

OldWay

(Note that in this method, the shadow is a drop shadow on the solid paper.)

The “New Way” of Cutting Holes in Paper

One day back in December, I was listening to The Digi Show podcast episode A Trend That Aggravates Me. Peppermint Granberg of One Little Bird Designs made a comment on the show about a better way of doing cut-outs.

Enter the “inner shadow”.

I don’t know how, but I’d never heard of it. Sure enough, there it was in the “fx” menu in the layers palette.

fxmenu

The inner shadow menu looks the same as the familiar drop shadow menu. I copied my usual drop shadow settings and inputted them into the inner shadow menu. (You can find some drop shadow ideas in this section of The Daily Digi.)

Here’s the result:

NewWay

(Note how in this method the shadow is an inner shadow on the rectangle shape, which has the striped paper clipped to it.)

To save time in the future, I saved my inner shadow settings as a style so that I can apply it in one click from now on.

Here is the first layout I made trying this technique. (The cut-out doodle stars have an inner shadow on them.) It was so freeing to be able to move them around the page until I found the “right” spot for them.

2011_5YearsOld-web

This little process change made cut-outs much easier and something that I can quickly try in various places on a page. I love learning new tricks in Photoshop!

PS – The title graphic was made using papers and elements from The Daily Digi member exclusive kit My Life. The examples were made using One Little Bird Design’s kit Narrative.

Using Older Kits

Title

Title Supplies: My Life In Print, a Daily Digi member exclusive kit

When I first started digital scrapbooking, the ability to use and re-use my purchased kits really appealed to me. Soon I became a digital scrapbook supply “collector” and my digi stash grew and grew and grew. Over the years, I’ve purged some of the really old products, like from the time when digital papers had no texture. I’ve kept a lot of great kits from about 2008/2009 and onwards though.

My habit has always been to scrap with my newest purchases first; Unfortunately, that means that some of my older kits have been forgotten on my computer which is sad because they are still beautiful kits! So, I have been challenging myself to scrap with some of these older products.

I’ll let you be the judge, but I don’t think anybody is going to look at these pages and say, “Wow, that is so 2010!” Winking smile

I chose or created some layouts using kits that I purchased at least one year ago for this post. For each one, I added some thoughts about how I worked with the product and I’d love to hear your ideas in the post comments about how you work with your older products!

Using a New Template

2011_Karah_garden-web

Supplies: Green Thumb by Karah Fredericks, Preserved by Zinnias & Swallowtails

Karah Fredricks contributed the Green Thumb kit to the June 2010 Digi Files, making it over a year old when I made this page in October 2011. I paired it with a fresh template and lots of journaling. It’s just a simple page, but the story and photo are together so I’m happy about that.

Using a New (to me) Photoshop Trick

2011-08-07-CloudNine-web

Supplies: Cirque du Ciel by Queen of Quirk, Cranberry freebie by Zinnias and Swallowtails

Queen of Quirk contributed the kit used, Cirque du Ciel, to the July 2010 Digi Files so the kit was over a year and a half old when I made this page. I used lighting effects in Photoshop to add a soft “spotlight” to the design by following the tutorial here.

2007-07-07-Pretty-web

Supplies: Clementine by Susan Bartolini, GWL: Kids by Crystal Livesay

I used that same lighting trick on this page with a kit I purchased on the day my son was born and he’s two years old now.

Shopping on My Computer

2012-02-05-Sweet-web

Supplies: That’s My Boy! by Zoe Pearn, Preserved by Zinnias and Swallowtails, Quickly Stacked 1 by ad77 Designs

On this page I used the kit That’s My Boy! by Zoe Pearn, purchased in 2009, over two years ago. When I snapped the photo of my son, I knew I wanted a blue and green kit to match his outfit. I went through my tagged kit previews and found this kit and thought it paired nicely with the photo. It was a good reminder to check my digi scrap supplies folder!

Going With the Theme

2012-02-SKReport-web

Supplies: It’s Elementary by Dani Mogstad, My Life In Print template from The Daily Digi

The school-themed kit above is one of my favourite kits for tracking my daughter’s school years. I’ve used it several times since I purchased it in 2010 and I’m sure I’ll use it a few more times in the future!

I hope you are inspired to take a look at your own digital supplies and work with some old favourites. I know I had a lot of fun making these pages!

What YOU have learned from The Daily Digi

image

I had so much fun sharing what I’ve learned from The Daily Digi, but I had even MORE fun reading what so many of you have learned! Each and every comment just made me so happy, I love seeing how you have been inspired! Here are a few tidbits of what our readers have learned:

From Sharon S. – The coolest thing I learned in the last year involved double page spreads. As I challenged myself to complete Project 52, which for me included an entire scrapbook album, I kept learning things that made that project easier. From one designer, I learned to flip a template horizontally and vertically to make a second page. But the biggest aha moment came when someone said to lay the two pages out in a single document. What?!? I had been struggling with two different documents, trying to get things to line up across the two pages. The whole project became infinitely easier when I was able to see the whole thing at once. lol! Seems so simple now. Anyway, here’s the first spread I did like that:

6133383788_0f0f02e1d6_o

Papers and Elements: Celebrate, TDD Collab., Sketch: Scrapbook Inspiration, Font: Problem Secretary

From arimacias – I have learned to let go and have fun. some days I am just too busy to do anything other than edit a few photos or power scrap a few pages. it’s all good and it is all ok:)

meandthekidsahlinstudio_1jan12template_PSD (1)

template by sahlinstudio (freebie) kit by DDE via thedailydigi

From Julie Rae – Well, virtually everything I know about digital scrapbooking I have learned directly from TDD or indirectly from a recommended link. How’s that!?! OK I don’t know tons but I have been productive: making layouts, invitations, mini-books (hybrid), cards, templates–it’s been terrific. I have printed dozens of layouts and have several scrapbooks going simultaneously. One of the most important things I’ve learned from TDD would have to be metadata. It’s not flashy, but it is HUGE! If we do not tell our story any other way, we can through metadata. Totally awesome (I say as I stare at boxes of old photos and a thousand digital ones…yikes). Thank you TDD for being here for us everyday, we need you!

image

From Sarah T. – I love looking at all the different styles of scrapbooking, and getting to know the different designers and their processes for scrapping and designing. I like seeing the example pages using product from different designers. It encourages me to try new things. For instance, this year I got to know Anna Aspnes through TDD and the digishow, and I love her artsy style, but it was WAAAAAY out of my comfort zone. I finally just jumped in and tried it after seeing some inspiration, and hearing that “there’s no wrong way to do this” and ‘just try it!!’
Here’s my “artsy” layout:

6345785995_ac9efcf89c_b

link to credits

From Jan in Alberta – The one thing I learned in the last year that I return to all the time is how to create a more effective title. I use the technique from Steph’s post My Favorite Title Trick for most of my layouts. One thing it has led me to do is make my title on a new blank file, essentially designing my own word art. I create a 12? long by 4? high canvas and often put each letter on its own layer. Once I’m happy with letter placement and size. I merge the layers, simply the resulting layer and then follow through with Steph’s title sticker technique. From there it’s a simple matter of dragging my title onto my layout, dropping it, resizing and positioning it where it looks best and giving it a little drop shadow to enhance the sticker effect.

I’ve learned a bunch of other things too, but this is the one that has made the biggest difference in my layouts.

image_thumb2

From Mrs. Hobbes – Seriously, the best thing I learned in 2011 from the Daily Digi was from an old post–Fonts Don’t Float. It has seriously impacted how I work with my journaling, paint splats, brushes, masks, etc so that I experimented more with photo/paper blending, paints, brushes, etc. As someone whom brushes gave the heebie-jeebies for about three years, this is tremendous! :D Thank you so much!

2010_positivechange

From Corey -I’ve learned a lot from The Daily Digi and The Digi Show this past year. One post that really inspired me was Steph’s on Digital Scrapbooking Your Magical Memories. I have been working on a Disney album and that post really inspired me in several ways. Steph also introduced me to Aaron Morris in that post. I loved his Disney layouts and his clustering. As a result of that post, I took Aaron’s class at Big Picture on clustering and have started using clustering a lot in my layouts. And since you need to shadow all of those clusters, I enjoyed the post you did about One Layout Shadowed By Different Digi Scrappers. Thanks so much for all you do. I love this site and the show.

From Michelle VO – I love the Daily Digi and almost always start my day with it. What have I learned?! I decided to go through the posts and look and I came up with a few specifics. Over the past year, I have learned so much but probably the Google Calendar post in January by Steph really impacted my life for the better. All of Katrina Kennedy’s posts are great. I can always use her tips for creating light or making better pictures. She puts the information into friendly terms that I can understand. I love the journaling posts from Katie. She has the neatest ideas for making journaling easy like the calendar as a journaling tool post. The Funtastic Fridays are great because I waste so much time shopping in relation to how much I actually spend scrapping . Friday posts also include trends and happenings like new classes or software product releases not just designer kits. I love the design posts regarding text size or design principles but honestly, it’s the well roundedness of the site that makes it so special and that it is positive and supportive of this hobby and industry. I also appreciate learning about the designers and discovering designers through the Digi Files contributor features. Thanks for a great year and keep calm and carry on ;-)

From Dawn N. – I love the digi show and I can not say enough about all I have learned in the last few months – every year I have created a book for my cheeleaders in publisher, or I have designed invitations, etc… I never realized that was a form of digital scrapbooking… now that I am listening and learning – I have discovered templates, designers, elements, clusters, and well a whole world out there to record all my memories! I love drop box (tip from the digi show) and also Unzip them all – tip from your free e-book. But mostly I love having a ‘go-to’ place each day where I learn something new, something to make my memory keeping easier & more fun.

From Leah – I only started digital scrapbooking after listening to the Digi Show and visiting the Daily Digi for a while – you guys made it all sound like so much fun – once I decided to try it out and downloaded some free stuff, I became a member to build up my stash, and now I’m even making my own elements. Definitely addicted!

There are even more wonderful comments to read if you want to check them out. Everyone who left a comment on that post was eligible to win a gift certificate from one of our January featured designers. I used the random.org site to pick a winner. Congratulations to Dawn N.!
