All About the Cucumber

It was a beautiful night. Our first cool(ish) day in a long time and the breeze and fading sun begged us to have dinner outside. I love our two big picnic tables!

We ate our dinner and talked about memories we have of certain places. It is amazing what the kids do and do not remember. I love hearing all the little details that stick out in their minds. It’s rarely a big Christmas present or a vacation they choose to talk about. Instead, it is all the little moments that make us…US.

And I was reminded, once again, that it’s the small things that tell the majority of our story. Every person, every family — there are little quirks and habits and decisions that shape them into who they are.

My scrapping time is limited these days. I also don’t take pictures nearly as much as I used to. But as I listen to my children talk about all the sweet little details of the years they’ve lived, I am reminded that it is the little moments that make life big. It’s all in the details. It’s all about the cucumber.

It’s weird, I know. But in our family, the favorite snack is — by far — CUCUMBERS. They love them and would eat them all day, every day if I could afford a never-ending supply.

And so, the other day as I chopped another half dozen cucumbers while my two youngest inhaled them, I grabbed my camera. I wanted to capture this seemingly insignificant part of our life because it really is a part of who we are. All those little quirks are.

These are the stories I want to remember. Because life, as quickly as it goes by, is really all about the cucumber 🙂

iPhoneography Upgrade

Apple recently announced the iPhone 7 Plus, featuring two built in camera lenses. You get an upgraded 12 megapixel ƒ/1.8 wide-angle lens alongside the brand new ƒ/2.8 telephoto(ish) lens.

I didn’t plan to upgrade my phone this year, but when I saw the new and improved camera, I knew I had to have it. Thankfully, T Mobile offered a free phone with an iPhone trade-in, with other phone carriers following suit. So I found myself down at the store pre-ordering my iPhone 7 Plus. It’s still a week or two out from being delivered, so in the meantime, I’m reading all I can about the new camera.

This camera is bound to be a huge tool for iPhone scrappers. My biggest problems with scrapping on my phone are 1) the size of the screen. The Plus will hopefully help with that. and 2) the quality of the photos. Even though iPhones have improved so much over the years, the lack of a zoom lens impacted my ability to use my iPhone exclusively. But now, with the ability to have both a zoom and traditional lens in my phone, my DSLR will definitely be relegated to portrait sessions, special occasions and sporting events.

As I anticipate my package, I am soaking up all the info I can find. I thought I’d share some of it with you!

Hello scrappers! I’m delighted to be back once again at The Daily Digi. My name is Pamela but around digi-land I’m best known as Miss Mint and I’ve been the owner/designer/tech support/customer service representative/social media & marketing manager/regular gal Friday behind Peppermint Creative for the last 10 years.

When I’m not busy playing in Peppermint-land, I use my design skills to energize and empower other entrepreneurs within their business by creating and consulting them on branding, promotional graphics and web design/development.

This is a throw back to my awesome 2014 Disney trip with my CT member, Mint Chick Mary Jo. I finally got around to scrapping these silly pictures when I designed the Go Wild Collection designed for those Disney Adventureland pictures. I couldn’t resist.

started

My professional background is in copywriting and graphic design – two skills have come in very handy. I’m probably one of the only designers that is not and never was a scrapbooker. I love to design and let others work their magic with their amazing scrapping skills. I worked at an interactive advertising agency for a while and then did some freelance design but found it really creatively unfulfilling. Then I stumbled into designing scrapbooking products as a bit of a happy accident and loved it. I started setting up a store just to fill the creative void I had been feeling figuring it would be a fun little hobby. In April 2006, Peppermint Creative was born and it unexpectedly snowballed into my full-time job.

inspired

I’m not a scrapbooker, I just like to design so my inspiration mainly comes from my amazing customers and my super talented team. I love that they are not shy about telling me what kinds of designs they want to see. For me, designing is a puzzle you can never solve. There is always more to learn and more to try. With every kit I feel like I always learn at least 3 new things. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shouted at my computer ‘there’s a button for that?!?’ after discovering a hidden Photoshop function that completes a task I’ve been doing in 34 manual steps in just one click.

tools

Computer: I do all my designing on a 15″ MacBook Pro hooked up to two external monitors. I love the real estate of the double big screen and the optional portability of the laptop. Best of both worlds! My newest toys are my Canon iP8720 printer which is amazing.

Program: Photoshop + Illustrator CS

Camera: I have a Canon 7D which I have not been using nearly as much as I should. Lenses: 50mm f/1.8, 17-85mm f/1.4-5.6, 75-300mm f/1.4-5.6 and the 430EX Speedlite External Flash. I also use my Olympus Pen E-PL1 quite a bit but now which is a cross between a point and shoot and a DSLR, which is pretty cool but now that I have the iPhone6 I’ve been using that as my camera most often.

Anything Else: I recently splurged on a very sexy Wacom Cintiq Tablet that has a touch screen and a full display so you can draw right on the screen and see what you’re drawing. It’s pretty amazing.

tipstricks

I don’t know if everyone already does this but I find the History Palette to be a must-have function. When designing or scrapping a page, I’m constantly using the History function in Photoshop to take snapshots of my work if I’m unsure if I like what I did. For example if I design a layout and I think it’s ok I’ll take a snapshot. Then I can go move everything around and see if I like it the second way better. Take another snapshot. You can then toggle between snapshots to compare. I find this helpful because the ‘undo’ function only goes back so many steps. To get the History Palette go under Window>History and click the little camera icon at the bottom on the palette to take a snapshot. Note these are not saved when you save your file so you can’t open the file later to find your history but it’s very helpful while working.

favorite

The Go Wild Collection is my favorite at the moment. I love the wild colors and fun elements. I love that there are so many packs to mix and match. It was originally designed specifically for Disney Adventureland memories but I created a full add-on for all your animal, zoo and safari photos.

Gratitude Journal {week 38}

On Sundays this year at The Daily Digi, we are going to be sharing a FREE weekly gratitude journal spread.

These pages are a place for you to record little memories you don’t want to forget, little reasons to be grateful. Each week their will be a gratefulness quote as well as a few photo spots.

You can use these FREE pages in a number of ways:

1) As digital scrapbooking templates. The download will always include .psd files for both 2-page 12×12 spreads as well as 2-page 8.5×11 spreads. You can add your own papers and elements and scrap ’till your heart’s content! (This is also a good option for those of you who get twitchy because I started the week with Friday. Since January 1 is a Friday, I like to start each week that way, but you may not! Feel free to adjust as needed!

2) As a digital journal. Keep the colors and text just as they are. Simply flatten the layers and add your notes of gratitude. Easy peasy!

3) As printed pages. Print out and write on them the good old-fashioned way. There is a .pdf file included for printing two letter-sized pages. Print your photos and attach!

If you have missed previous weeks, grab them HERE.

_____

If you have used the templates or print-outs, we’d LOVE to see them! Share a link in the comments or EMAIL ME . We just might feature your page!

Be sure to be back next week for your next FREE journal template!

Telling My Story 4

As I mentioned in our first post in this series, here at The Daily Digi we’ve talked a lot about “All About Me” pages. We’ve talked about our fears, we’ve talked about telling our stories, and we have even shared some simple ways to do it.

But the truth is, I STILL struggle with this. It isn’t that I am really afraid (though I might not be excited to share some of the information with those outside my family), and it’s not that I don’t really know what to say (I rarely run out of words!) For me, the reality is I just don’t think about it and therefore I don’t take the time to do it!

And so, in my question of, “If not you then who?,” I realize once again I am my own memory keeper and I am the only one who can truly tell my story. If I want my children and grandchildren to know who I was, what I thought about, and what beliefs ran deep, I must be intentional in writing those things down.

Every week or two, I’ll share a new template with a new question. I hope that these will enable me to tell more of my story and for you to tell more of yours! And I would LOVE to see what you create!

This fourth question makes us take a hard look at our priorities. We are often so busy with to-do lists, never-ending housework, kids’ schedules, and the frantic pace of typical daily life that we rarely take the time to do the things that we say are most important to us. So, when we ask ourselves what we would do with an entire day with no obligations, we can then naturally move on to other questions such as, “Why don’t I ever put that on my to-do list?” Taking time to assess our priorities and assess how we actually put those into practice is so important. If we don’t, we may end up one day asking, “Why didn’t I take the time to do _________?”

P.S. Don’t forget to grab the SCRAP YOUR YEAR class before it’s too late! It’s only $15 right now!

Cozy Autumn

Digilicious Design is one of those designers I will always remember. Her adorable illustrations WOWed me the first time I saw them a few years ago. She just makes everything SO. STINKIN. CUTE. I am so glad she is with us here at The Daily Digi and again and I know her kit, Cozy Autumn, is going to be perfect for all your it’s-still-fall-please-don’t-pull-out-the-Christmas-stuff pages. That little fox is so adorable I might just have to buy a fox costume for one of my kids just so I can use that little guy. What does the fox say?

Name

I’m a work-from-home mum to 2 boys, who are now in Grades 2 & 4. Along with hubby we live in a beautiful corner of Queensland, Australia called The Glasshouse Mountains.
I was completely blessed to join the fabulous team at Sweet Shoppe Designs about 2 years ago, and I have never been happier in my design career.
I’m a very color-orientated person and I loved working with these gorgeous shades of Autumn!
I’m still really enjoying creating themed, cute and colourful collections, and my art journal seems to gather ideas quicker than I can bring them to life! So I don’t think I’ll be running out steam anytime soon!
