I Like to Move It (move it)

You’re welcome. You now have that song from Madagascar in your head. I do too.

Templates are my go-to scrapping tool, mostly because of time. And then there is that little detail that others are so much more talented and creative than I am. The designers we feature here at The Daily Digi always knock my socks off and blow the cobwebs off my scrapping mojo.

In the September Digi Files, Fiddle Dee Designs had some great templates. I decided to open one up and get some scrapping done. I chose a template, a kit, a few photos, and just tried not to overthink it. I knew little people would be waking up soon and I had to scrap while I had the chance. I used a beautiful kit by Zoe Pearn and Erica Zane (a moment of silence for Zoe retiring from designing digital products…), called Bare Feet & Blue Jeans.

Once I had my template open and put a few papers on, I realized that the template wasn’t exactly what I needed. I had a horizontal photo I wanted to use and the main journaling spot was for a vertical photo. Now, if I had looked more closely at the template pack, I would have seen that there was in face another template almost exactly the same, other than the horizontal photo. Oops. Oh well…thankfully, changing up templates to make them work for me is easy.

First, I selected all my layers (select > all) and then I deselected the few I didn’t want to move (the three large papers).

With my layers selected, I moved everything over. I then resized and reoriented my photo spot.

Then, I got scrapping. The kit was perfect for my page…it even had a doily to put where the doily spots are! I grabbed a few photos, pulled my favorite bits from the kit, added a second journaling spot, and fifteen minutes later I was done. Scrapping win!

Create Your First Scrapbook Layout: So Easy A Child Can Do It!

Photograph:
Julian Masters Photography

One afternoon as I was watching
Andrea Bethke’s Haul videos, I asked Emily if she would like to scrapbook…

“Am I old enough?”

“Sure, would you like to use paper scrapbooking stuff or try digital scrapbooking on the computer?”

“I would like to do it on the computer, so then it would be easier to do the writing.” Emily’s just turned seven, so she like the idea of being able to correct spelling mistakes easily! (Don’t we all!)

So it was time to get things all set up for her first scrapbook page. I thought I’d walk you through the thinking behind how I taught her, so you may be able to help a young one in your life too!

Program

Photoshop Elements. If you know me you know that I’d go for Photoshop Elements. It’s my program of choice and I’ve been using it for 10 years now. I just installed Photoshop Elements on the laptop that we share. You can install Adobe software on both your laptop and desktop computer.

Alternative: Use what you know. If you are helping a new scrapper, now’s probably not the time to try to learn something new yourself. Sure, My Memories Suite is about $50 with a coupon, but you want to be familiar with the software before you try to teach it.

Photos

Flickr. I wanted Emily to have her choice of the photos, without risking her saving over my original photos.

Since I use the
Flickr Auto-Uploader and an Eye-Fi card all of our photos are on Flickr as well as on our desktop computer.

So I let her browse my Flickr account in the
Camera Roll view. Each time she clicked on a photo it was added to a bin at the bottom of the screen.

Then we just clicked download and unzipped the photos in her download folder.

Alternative: Simply drag a copy of the photos onto the desktop for your little scrapbooker to use.

Creating the Page

As Emily is new to scrapbooking, I felt like explaining templates would add another layer of complexity. So we kept it simple and just used a
Preset blank page.

  1. Click FileNew – Blank File
  2. Select the size page you want to create from the Size dropdown.
  3. Click Ok. Easy as pie.

Alternative: Try a quick page, or use a template.

Supplies

Content Library: We started by using the built-in content library in Photoshop Elements. Sure, the graphics are not going to be on trend or quite the quality we are used to, but it was super easy as their frames automatically clip the photos.

To see the content library:

  1. Select Expert Mode in the PSE Editor
  2. Click on Graphics

The Graphics panel includes backgrounds, frames, graphics, shapes and text. Each section displays thumbnail examples that you can add. Most sections offer a menu of categories and subcategories. When you add a graphic to the scrapbook pages, it is added as a new layer and does not affect the original image.

As you add the graphics to your page they will download from the internet, but the short lag didn’t bother us.

Alternative: Select a kit and open all the bits and pieces for your little scrapbooker to use.

How To

The elements of a scrapbook page are:

  • photos
  • text (journaling/title)
  • graphics (paper/embellishments)

So our aim for the first page was for Emily to get photos on to the blank page, add frames and some journalling.

To achieve this, I showed Emily just two basic tools. The move tool
move tool and the type tool type-tool.

Her process was:

  1. Click on a frame from the built-in Graphics (it automatically adds the frame in its default size on the page)
  2. Drag a photo onto the gray landing zone
  3. Resize the frame
  4. Resize or move the photo as needed

I also went into the Tool options menu on the right to uncheck
Auto Show Tool Options, so it was easier for Emily to see and drag in photos without having the Tool Options cover the Photo Bin.

Then Emily added a text box for the title. She could have applied a text style from the
Graphics panel too, but she left it plain for now.

The End Result

Here is Emily’s page:

Gotta love Pokemon! Next time I may have to show her
this kit (which may or may not have gone into my collection the day it came out!).

Emily’s already started on another page:

It’s never to early to scrapbook Christmas!

Not Just for Children!

We all talk about supporting our industry, and the best way to do that is to introduce digi scrapping to those around us.

If you have a budding scrapbooker in your life, why not set aside 15 minutes to pull together a few things so you can use to help them create their first page?

I’m excited that I’ll have a little buddy to scrapbook alongside me!

Have you introduced your children to scrapbooking?

If you know me at all, you will know I am a tad obsessed with hiking with my family. I love to be outside and I love to be with my family, and what better way to merge the two? And with all of those hikes in the woods, I can never have too many beautiful outdoorsy kits. And Sunrise StudiosIt Happens kit is going into my folder of kits to scrap with when we go on yet another walk in the woods. I love the blues, greens, and oranges paired with the woodgrain paper. And her word art just makes me giggle So beautiful! We’re so glad to show you all of her amazing designs!

Name

Hey everyone! I’m Emily, and I’ve been hopelessly, shamelessly addicted to digital scrapbooking since the summer of 2012. I live in a little town in rural northwestern Connecticut with my family and our four fur babies – Arwen(my camera-shy pooch), Scrumper Fish(my insane kitty), and the horses, Domino & Dakota! I’m an office assistant at our family owned small business by day, digital designer by night(and early morning and weekend). Besides digiscrapping, I love to read, love putting my headphones on and escaping in some good music, and when the weather is nice, I like to get out there and work! My guiltiest of guilty pleasures is playing Bejeweled and Peggle – it’s kind of embarrassing how much time I can kill playing those games on my iPad!

I made this LO using Journey and a fabulous template from Cindy Schneider – the journalling was something I had written down in my notebook on my 24th birthday, and a lot of the feelings from that day went into the making of the kit.

DesignerLO

started

I dabbled in designing not long after I started digiscrapping in 2012, and over the next couple of years, I participated in various contests and events around digi-land. It was towards the middle of 2014 when I finally got a chance to get serious about designing! In addition to being on The Digichick Creative Team, I was also a CT member for Charla of Charm Box Studios, and one day she asked me to do a collab with her! We were inspired by her youngest daughter, Rebekah – Charla made the Photoshop actions, I made the kit, and pretty soon “Bekah Boo” was born! We released “A Different Tune,” inspired by her daughter Jasmine, later that year. Charla is an amazing photographer, so when she got the opportunity to pursue her dream of doing dance photography, she took it! She decided to hang up her digiscrap designing hat early in 2015, and so I went on a bit of a hiatus from designing after that.

Later on in the year, I participated in a designing contest and actually WON a round, haha! With that came the offer to be a Guest Designer! Woohoo! Well, it turns out that the timing was terrible – there were several technical difficulties with the shop and forums, and it felt like the universe was conspiring against me, LOL! I ended up breaking down and asking Kim, the designer behind Kimeric Kreations and owner of The Digichick, for some advice. After more time had passed and I still wasn’t set up, she asked if I was up to being a designer at TDC! I remember telling her something along the lines of, “Right now, I never want to design again in the history of ever… but give me a week and I’ll be fine,” LOL! She had me set up and ready to go in record time – I swear, that lady is Superwoman! After a few days of frantic preparations, my store opened up, and ever since then I’ve been living my dream of being a designer!

inspired

All of my templates are created directly from my own LO’s – I’m a scrapper at heart, so that influences all of my design work.

When it comes to kits, it’s a combination of feelings and colors – they have to team up together and smack me upside the head. Then a deadline has to kick me in the pants. 😉

tools

Computer: 27″ iMac, 3.4 GHz i7 processor, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB Fusion Drive

Program: Adobe Creative Cloud – mostly Photoshop, though I do use Illustrator for making patterns… and kinda hate it.

Camera: iPhone 6s – I got my mom a Canon Rebel t5 for her birthday, so I’m monitoring her progress closely. As soon as she can turn it on and take a picture in less than 10 minutes, I’m putting her to work, haha!

Anything Else: Wacom Intuos Pro Medium, Epson printer/scanner/cat bed, and a Silhouette Cameo that I’ve had for several months and used once.

tipstricks

I know it’s been said before, but learn your program! Fiddle around with buttons, poke around in the settings(somewhat cautiously, please), and keep learning!

When it comes to drop shadows, don’t be afraid to mix blending modes and change the color of the shadow itself – I can’t tell you what will work every time, but if you mess around with your shadows enough, you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t!

favorite

It’s definitely tough to choose a favorite, but I’m gonna go with Compassion! It came together so well, and I love every page made with it!

That’s a tie between my Drop Shadows Styles and Quaint! It can be hard to tell why some things are more popular than others, but I think Quaint fills a need for a country/small town kit that’s not borderline hillbilly, LOL! No need to go hog wild adding farm animals and scarecrows. I think the drop shadow styles are pretty self explanatory – shadowing can be a pain, haha.

Gratitude Journal {week 39}

On Sundays this year at The Daily Digi, we are going to be sharing a FREE weekly gratitude journal spread.

These pages are a place for you to record little memories you don’t want to forget, little reasons to be grateful. Each week their will be a gratefulness quote as well as a few photo spots.

You can use these FREE pages in a number of ways:

1) As digital scrapbooking templates. The download will always include .psd files for both 2-page 12×12 spreads as well as 2-page 8.5×11 spreads. You can add your own papers and elements and scrap ’till your heart’s content! (This is also a good option for those of you who get twitchy because I started the week with Friday. Since January 1 is a Friday, I like to start each week that way, but you may not! Feel free to adjust as needed!

2) As a digital journal. Keep the colors and text just as they are. Simply flatten the layers and add your notes of gratitude. Easy peasy!

3) As printed pages. Print out and write on them the good old-fashioned way. There is a .pdf file included for printing two letter-sized pages. Print your photos and attach!

If you have missed previous weeks, grab them HERE.

_____

If you have used the templates or print-outs, we’d LOVE to see them! Share a link in the comments or EMAIL ME . We just might feature your page!

Be sure to be back next week for your next FREE journal template

Read what our first participants had to say about the class:

Enjoyed this class very much; Janet does a wonderful job of showing what she does. I’ve had LR for a year now, and after watching her, I feel more confident that I can make a difference with my photos.

I took this class as a Lightroom novice and I marvel at what I have learned in a short few weeks. This has changed the way I scrapbook!!

The class was more than I hoped for. I loved being able to communicate with Janet and other students; The content was well organized, easy to follow and Janet is a great teacher. It’s great getting to keep the content and videos for future reference, too. I’ve already bought another class!

I enjoyed seeing the processes Janet used to edit her photos. This class taught me what to look for and how to fix it.

This class gave me the courage to just load my photos into the LR catalog. All the additional information is icing on my photo cake. Clear, concise information and the downloadable videos are a great help. Because we all know once is never enough. 😉

DesignerLO

Yellow Canary Photography photo shoot- ‘For the Birds’

started

Many years ago I was in forums online and was intrigued by the digital signatures in the bottom of people’s profiles. This was before digital anything was a huge hit and I just had gotten my first digital camera (so what, 11 years ago now). I hunted down tutorials and ways to make it happen for myself, and more or less learned to design. I swore I wasn’t going to be a digital scrapbooker but with two babies I was really losing any hope of getting paper scrapping done anytime soon. lol. I finally caved in and started digital scrapbooking but this was only after I was designing. I have not looked back since then and have been doing this for around 9 years now I believe?

inspired

Seasons, holidays, clothing, textures, etc. There is inspiration all over Pinterest and while my kits rarely have a title I always have an idea of where I want it to go.

tools

Computer: I use an ASUS laptop on my couch… lol. Honestly, I don’t know these things.

Program: Illustrator and Photoshop (both from Adobe) are my go to programs

Camera: I currently use the Nikon D7100 with a battery grip but look forward to upgrading when I complete my degree in the spring. I do love my camera however. 🙂

Anything Else: I do have the wacom tablet but need to learn how to use it better!

tipstricks

Photography Tip- don’t have your subjects stare into the sun. SO many people argue this is the best lighting and for some it might be (especially in beautiful evening lighting). Have them turn away and have the sun behind them if you can, or move them to a shady spot if it scares you (and then the camera won’t be confused on exposure if it is in automatic mode). I always hated photos were we were all squinting, it hurts like heck for those in the photos!

favorite

This is my favorite because I made it for my mom. She grew up with a raggedy ann and andy but due to a fire in their home lost her beloved doll as a child. I have purchased one for her for Christmas one year but of course this kit spoke to me. My grandparents always sang the “I love you, a bushel and a peck” song and my Grandpa even sang it at her funeral so it was sentimental all the way around. I definitely love the colors and everything about this one.

DesFav

popular

This was inspired by the Teal Pumpkin project, one that allows people who have children with sensory/health/allergy problems to know that the house where the pumpkin is placed is passing out things other than candy. This is a huge relief to parents who know that candy would be wasted on their child (my oldest son included).
