Summer’s End

DesignerLogo

I know it is August, but I am having a hard time admitting that summer is almost over and it’s almost time for apple pie and homework. But Summer’s End, the amazing kit by Studio Alexis Designs, reminds us the end is coming. We might as well embrace it. I love the soft and comfortable colors as well as intricate elements such as the incredible dragon fly. Let’s take a closer look as we deny the end of long and lazy days is near. And wait until you see the graffiti pack…oh my!

Barbara and I (Alexis – a.k.a. Lexy) are a design team that collaborate on every collection we produce. We do this via long distance on daily basis – we absolutely love working together!

I began designing 7 years ago, and after 6 months of working behind-the-scenes, Barbara joined the studio in January 2015. Both of us started with paper scrapping, but for me, it was short lived. I quickly found digital scrapbooking about 13 years ago, and have been hooked ever since…we were both scrappers prior to designing, and on several Creative Teams.

inspired

We are truly inspired by all things that are beautiful. Beginning with color, glass, crystal, flowers and lace and always nature. At times, our own vintage photos will provide insight as to colors and style.

Color is paramount in most everything we do to make a kit come together. Although we do some themed kits, most of our collections are created to be versatile for all occasions. Flowers are always key and we rarely duplicate any element so as to provide our customers with variation within their own designs and projects.

tools

Computer: We both run with with OS X – El Capitan, 8GB of RAM and 1 monitor. That doesn’t include about 3 external hard drives (for each of us) to facilitate large files needed for designing and photos. It is so important to have a backup plan for all your photos and purchases.

Program: Barbara and I both use Photoshop CC 2015, I occasionally use ArtRage.

Camera: I have a Lumix – DMC ZS7, and Barbara uses a Sony Cx 6000.

Anything Else: We both use iPads, but do very little design work on them aside from some doodles or searching for ideas to design new kits.

tipstricks

For both of us, we LOVE using filters both in our layouts and in our design work. You can easily change the entire spectrum of things by using that simple little technique that is found in all programs. Also be sure to play with the opacity and masks on papers! You would be surprised how much fun it can be.

favorite

In the Garden: We love the rich colors and textures in this kit… it just screams country summers. This kit is perfect for scrapping layouts for gardening, trips to the farmer’s market, flea markets, picnics, summer country weddings, picnics and parties, and would be great for summer / barbcue recipe cards and layouts.

Again, this was difficult to choose just one, since most all of our collections are popular!

Spring and all things new inspired this one. After a long winter, we were exited to create something without snowflakes! *laughing* We feel many of our customers shared in our sentiment.

Gratitude Journal {week 34}

On Sundays this year at The Daily Digi, we are going to be sharing a FREE weekly gratitude journal spread.

These pages are a place for you to record little memories you don’t want to forget, little reasons to be grateful. Each week their will be a gratefulness quote as well as a few photo spots.

You can use these FREE pages in a number of ways:

1) As digital scrapbooking templates. The download will always include .psd files for both 2-page 12×12 spreads as well as 2-page 8.5×11 spreads. You can add your own papers and elements and scrap ’till your heart’s content! (This is also a good option for those of you who get twitchy because I started the week with Friday. Since January 1 is a Friday, I like to start each week that way, but you may not! Feel free to adjust as needed!

2) As a digital journal. Keep the colors and text just as they are. Simply flatten the layers and add your notes of gratitude. Easy peasy!

3) As printed pages. Print out and write on them the good old-fashioned way. There is a .pdf file included for printing two letter-sized pages. Print your photos and attach!

If you have missed previous weeks, grab them HERE.

_____

If you have used the templates or print-outs, we’d LOVE to see them! Share a link in the comments or EMAIL ME . We just might feature your page!

Be sure to be back next week for your next FREE journal template!

A Little Something

My scrapping time these days is limited. I miss it so much, and yet there are many things calling for my attention and I don’t always get to scrap like I used to.

When I do get the chance to scrap, it has to go fast. I don’t have lots of time to play around with stuff, making sure it is perfect.

And yet, there is something in me that wants to at least like my pages a bit. I want something to grab my attention (other than the photos).

I had a few minutes this morning and I decided I wanted to scrap. I used Heather Roselli’s Creativity Kit (from this month’s Digi Files). It was the last kit I have downloaded, so I just decided to make it work for my photo. I pulled out the darker colors along with the yellow (for a bit of pop) and scrapped away. The layout took all of ten minutes.

Overall, I was happy with the page, but I felt like it was missing something. Remembering something from home design principles, I realized it just needed a bit more color.

In home design, it is recommended to use the 60-30-10 rule.

60% Primary Color

30% Secondary Color

10% Accent Color

And that is what was missing. I had my primary color (the grey and dark blue to meld into one deep color), my secondary color (the happy yellow), but I was missing an accent. Just a little something to make the page pop.

So, I scanned my scrap stash, grabbed a few bits of red, and put them on. It’s amazing how much of a difference a little something can make.

Gearing Up & Winding Down

This is such a strange time here in the US. Some of us are already heading back to school, returning to everyday routines. Others are still in the hazy hot days of summer, hanging on to those last weeks of freedom. Wherever you find yourself, there’s bound to be something from one of our favorite designers to inspire you where you are.

Sweet Little cherubs, soft flowers, and worn colors. It’s like taking a peek into my mother’s and grandmother’s childhoods. Bows and bonnets, flowers and fun. Name

Vicki Stegall is the proud owner of Oscraps.com. Vicki opened Oscraps 9 years ago when she made the transition from a traditional paper scrapbooking to digi scrapping. While Vicki is and always will be a Designer at heart, the responsibilities of running a major digi site don’t leave her as much time for Designing as she’d like. She’s a born and bred ‘Okie’ living in Moore, Oklahoma and really does say, “y’all” all.the.time. She lives with her IT hubby, Anthony and her 15 year old son, Alyx, who is also her primary scrap subject. Someone recently described her design style as Vintage Grunge and she thinks that suits her just fine.

STOREFACEBOOK

layout

I did this layout for a designer spotlight challenge at Oscraps. The challenge was to go wild and pile stuff on a page. I did struggle with this and ended up piling it on but still keeping it clean and simple. What I loved about this was how the challenge and the act of being free with it all ended up inspiring my journaling.

started

I got started paper scrapbooking when my son was born. Before I became a stay at home mom I was very career oriented and didn’t really know what to do with myself at home. One of the ladies from our childbirth class ended up living less than a mile from us and she invited me over for a scrapbooking party. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into but went anyway. Wow, am I glad I did! We started spending most every day together scrapping and crafting while our munchkins played together. One day she called me up and asked if I’d ever heard of digital scrapbooking. I never had, but as she put it, I was better at computers than her so could I check into it. From that day on, I was hooked! At that time, there just wasn’t very much out there. So, I started making my own designs, then sharing them and eventually opened the shop at Oscraps.

inspired

Anything and everything! I really enjoy “found objects” and that’s frequently what I start with. The kits just evolve from that. Being the owner of a large shop, I tend to get caught up in the actual running of the shop – background site issues, customer service, etc. so I don’t have as much time for designing (and/or scrapping), so deadlines and commitments continue to be my biggest inspiration at the moment. That’s one of the things I love most about the 52 Inspirations subscription. It keeps me designing twice (or more) a month!

tools

Computer: Macbook Pro laptop, dual monitors and a cintiq graphics tablet.

Program: Photoshop CS6

Camera: Everyday camera – my iPhone 4s My “good” camera (which I don’t know how to use very well) – Canon EOS 5D

Anything Else: iPad 2, Kindle 1 & 2, and Nook Color (I like gadgets). My favorite is my Kindle. I use it to listen to my books via the “text-to-speech” feature. It takes some getting used to, but I love listening to books while I do extractions and laundry 🙂

tipstricks

To check out the different effects of blend modes quickly and easily, hold down the shift key and press the + or – keys to cycle through the different layer blend modes. This works best with the “move” tool as your active tool – if your active tool is a brush or similar, this won’t work because it will cycle through the blend modes of the active tool rather than in the layers palette.

favorite

I loved everything about this bundle – the soothing colors, the creative outlet of the mixed media papers, the traditional touches and experimenting with something relatively new to me – full size page blend masks.

52 Inspirations is a yearly subscription project that I do with Sue Cummings. We’ve been doing it since 2008 and we have members who have been with us since day one. Sue or I release a mini kit or element/paper pack each week for a year. It’s continually changing and continues to inspire me every week even after all these years. And, it’s a ridiculously great deal for our customers!

I was searching for traditional paper scrapbooking ideas on the web in 2006,when I discovered Digital Scrapbooking and immediately I fell in love with it.
I’ve started as a scrapper but I was tempted to designing since the beginning.
I’ve been designing since 2007 and I really loved every minute of it !!I’ve started by making little freebies on my old blog and tried to learn using photoshop.
It was a big challenge,I’ve worked really hard and one day I decided to try my luck to sell my designs.I still learn new things every day and this is so fun !!
I would describe my style as eclectic because I love so many different styles and I like to cater to every type of scrapbooker, from those who prefer a simple approach to traditional and fantasy.

inspired

I find my inspiration everywhere,it can be by watching tv or talking with a friend it’s hard to really define what’s inspire me because it is almost everything and all the time, sometime I wake up in the middle of the night and I have to write something I was thinking for a kit.
I am addicted to designing embellishments, when I start it’s always difficult to stop and I’ll often spent hours and sometimes even days on one single piece if necessary as detail is really important to me.
When I create a kit I use to start designing a few papers, something like 4 or 5 and after a few elements, after that I’m guided by my inspiration and sometimes I can re start from the beginning when i’m not satisfied with my work.
For example for the kit I designed for Daily Gigi I created 7 first papers but after I designed some elements I decided to re-made all the papers to give you the best choice.
I’m always too hard with myself lol

tools

Computer: I have a PC HP Pavilion that runs windows8.1 64 bits,Intel Core i5 @ 3.20GHz with 8GB RAM and an HP 24″monitor at 16/10 format because I really don’t like to work on 16/9.

Program: I use Photoshop cc 2015,Eye Candy 7 and Artrage 4

Camera: I had a Reflex Nikon but it is damaged now so I often take pictures with an old Kodak easyshare and with my phone.
I also have an old polaroid since I’m 13 years old and it’s still work,I love to play with it.

Anything Else: I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet and an HP Envy Printer scanner

tipstricks

My tip is to backup all my files ,it happened to me 2 times to loose my work when I was a beginner designer,I didn’t had external hardrive and I loose files that I was never able to find again or re create.
Now I have 3 500 gb external disks + 2 16 gb usb keys, I save my work every day and the things I bought ,before I turn off the computer.
I think I’m a little paranoiac with saving files now lol but backup your files is so important .

favorite

I choose my Shades of Autumn kit because it’s about a season I cherish the most and I can resist to the 2 cute squirrels in love !
The colors are vibrant and I love the lights touch everywhere, this kit is really funny and it makes me happy !
