Name

Hi! I’m Kim. I live in a sunny, growing, bustling little suburb northeast of Dallas, Texas with Mark, my hubby of almost 25 years. We have two awesome teenagers, Matthew (17), and Kaylee (14). I’m pretty much a homebody, so when I’m not running errands or shuttling the kids around to school or Girl Scouts or other various activities, you’ll usually find me at my computer, designing … or maybe even scrapping. 🙂

Most of my scrapping is memory keeping, but this page was just creative fun. I was inspired by shadowbox challenges that were happening in The Lilypad’s art journaling forum, so I grabbed some tins and a bunch of alphas and went to town with a favorite quote… “Never look backwards or you’ll fall down the stairs. – Rudyard Kipling” 🙂

started

I never formally paper scrapped. I had basic photo albums that I would occasionally stick other things in, and once in a while I would add titles and captions to photos in those sticky magnetic albums (eek!), but that was about it. I started designing web pages to share photos in 2001 and gradually taught myself how to make some of the decorative bits and pieces for them. I was thrilled when I discovered the digiscrapping world a couple of years later, and my dabbling eventually turned to more deliberate designing. I posted my first kit for sale in 2006, and The Lilypad has been my digi-home for the past 4 years.

inspired

Inspiration can come from anything to a piece of junk mail to a favorite photo. I often start with colors and just see what flows from there.

tools

Computer: My computer is an Alienware Aurora R4 with Windows 7, 16 GB RAM, and Intel Core i7-3820 CPU, 3.60 GHz. My primary monitor is a 27″ Asus MX279. My secondary is whatever the last functional hand-me-down monitor we have on hand, currently a 20″ HP 2009m, but there is a much nicer Planar one that hubby no longer needs just waiting for me to make time to set it up. (Yes, this is the same one I hadn’t set up yet when I was here a year ago.)

Program: I use Photoshop CS6 for almost everything. Once in a while I will open up Illustrator CS4 and play around a bit, mainly drawing things. But I’m not terribly proficient with it, so it’s not too often that I take the time to muddle my way through.

Camera: My main camera is a Sony RX100 II that hubby got me for Christmas a few years ago. It’s a super-duper fancy point-and-shoot. I have a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with it. It takes great photos if you can figure out the right setting, but the menus are much too complicated and the layout of it is not intuitive for me at all. I can’t count the number of times I have hit the power button when I meant to hit the shutter button, turning the camera off instead of taking a picture. So frustrating!

Anything Else: I have a Silhouette Portrait that I pull out once in a while, mainly for cutting out paper flowers pieces. My Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner gets used almost daily when I’m actively designing. And I couldn’t live without my Wacom Intuos Pen and Touch medium tablet – although I’ve disabled the touch part! I also just got a Shotbox for Christmas. It’s very fun and easy to use (if only I could get my camera to cooperate).

tipstricks

Working at a reasonable pace is one of my biggest challenges. I tend to linger endlessly over choosing just the right texture or experimenting with every possible color combination. Forcing myself to just accept the first option I like and move on without exhausting every possibility to see if there’s a “more perfect” choice is hard, but also very liberating.

favorite

All of my products are favorites for different reasons. Some of the things I find most inspirational are those I can touch; I’m always collecting bits and pieces just because I like the texture. The inspiration for “The Key to Happiness” came from a little tub of keys that belonged to my dad. They were from his 20+ years of managing a small department store, and just looking at his handwriting and the logos on all the tags and envelopes as I dug through them all brought back a lot of wonderful memories of the time I spent with him there.

This one is one of my contributions to a Lilypad monthly BYOC (Build Your Own Collab). These collections are always a lot of fun to design and are a big hit with our customers. We’re given a color palette to work with and each of us may create our own coordinating products. I love that Ragged Edges has such vibrant color and great texture and works with all kinds of pages.
