Name

Sheri from Jumpstart Designs here. I must say, when I began my design journey almost five years ago, I never dreamed this adventure would take me to the heights that it has. What began as an invitation from a shop owner to test the waters of digital design, has since turned in to a full-fledged business that has afforded me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and to explore new areas of creativity.
I’ve grown so much as a designer and much of this can be credited to fabulous friends in the industry and meeting other designers who have been willing to share their own knowledge and ideas. I’ve also developed great friendships with so many of my customers that I feel I’ve been adopted in to a huge family of like-minded enthusiasts! I wouldn’t have grown so much without them and fortunately, I get to spend my days (and often my nights) doing exactly what I love. What began as a hobby has now become my career and I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing. I get to work from home in my jammies, while spending a lot more time with my children and three grandsons. In fact, my youngest grandson who is two, is crawling all over me as I write this. LOL
I’ve always been inspired by colors and find that different color schemes evoke different design styles for me. One collection may be bright and whimsical, and the next might be more artistic or grungy. I love watercolor styles, as well as doodling, and you’ll see more of that soon.
I find that I have a ton of ideas swimming around in my head and have recently tapped in to some new ideas that I can’t wait to share with you in the upcoming months. My design style is changing and now that I’ve managed to carve out some extra time, you’ll soon see very new creations as I play with all of my new ideas. My goal is to offer fun, new products and ideas with a signature “Jumpstart Designs” flair!
I have just launched a new monthly series called “Jumpstart Your January” (February, March, etc.). This series will feature more of my recent style with different color schemes each month, but with an overall cohesive style that allows for mixing and matching throughout the year. I invite you to try them out and spend a little time flirting with your own creativity!
Happy New Year and may this season smile upon you with grace and love!

started

I retired from a professional career about five years ago and after retirement, I started dabbling in digi. I avoided it for several years because I knew if I got started, all of my paper scrapping supplies would end up gathering dust (and they are). Once I got started, I was hooked, and soon found myself invited to several creative teams. About a year later, I was asked by the owner of Pickleberrypop if I’d be interested in designing. Me? Seriously? I knew nothing about Photoshop (other than the drop-shadow styles) but dove quickly in to a learning curve. I was fortunate to have a few mentors and now five years later, find myself knee-deep in a fun and fulfilling career of designing.

inspired

I am inspired by colors and feel that my style changes a bit from one color palette to the next. One time I’ll be in a doodling mood and the next time I may be in a grungy, realistic, or colorful papery mood. However, the one thing that never changes is the fact that you will always find tons of flowers and leaves in my kits. I guess that’s because I love clustering with them myself so I tend to create plenty of them for my products. I also try to create each kit so that it includes plenty of versatile papers and elements for every scrapping, in addition to the themed elements. You’ll also find most of my kits to be pretty colorful. No matter how hard I try, pastel colors always end up a little more colorful than intended. I just can’t leave well enough alone! haha

I also enjoy creating products that have an emotional attachment, either for me or for my customers. I’ve had several requests for specific themes and am thrilled when they want it “Sheri style”. You’ll soon be seeing a new collection honoring the uniqueness of children with Autism and Asperger’s (another customer request).

The best thing about this business is that I’ve made so many new friends within my customer base and I truly enjoy taking good care of them.

tools

Computer: PC, Windows 10

Program: Adobe Creative Cloud with Photoshop and Illustrator

Camera: Nikon CoolPix L830

Anything Else: I use a Wacom Cintiq DTZ 1200W tablet. I like the ability to see what I’m drawing as I’m drawing it, and not through the monitor. I’ve also spoiled myself with four monitors (yes, four.) I have a new 32″ and three 27″ monitors, which come in handy when designing and trying to keep up with admin duties, etc.

tipstricks

When working on layouts (or previews in my case), I feel like it helps to play around a bit with different background papers and enhancement elements like background splatters. A layout can be as simple and clean as you like, or as full and clustery (is that a word?? lol) as you prefer, but sometimes, the smallest change can make all the difference in the world. Adding colors that make your photos pop, or adding an inside shadow to your papers, sometimes adds just the right touch.

I also admire those scrappers who really know how to make their photos stand out. Duplicating your photo, desaturating that layer, and changing the overlay mode to soft light, can really help your photos. You can play with the opacity, add extra overlays, and really bring your photos to life. After all, they are the reason we scrap those beautiful layouts, so make the most of them by helping your photos be the best they can be!

Beautiful Spirits Emerge Collection ~ I loved the diversity of this collection as it contains a little bit every style. Realistic, paper, doodles, artistic, etc. The color scheme was a pre-chosen one for a monthly event at our shop. I initially thought it would be a bit tough for me to work with but it ended up being one of the funnest ones, not to mention one of my most popular!

Masterpiece in Motion ~ This was one of my favorites for many of the same reasons. It contained a few different styles and offers a lot of diversity for the customer!
