Another Way to Use Those Journal Cards

Another Way to Use Those Journal Cards

It’s my first post of 2016! I am looking forward to another year of memory keeping. This year I’m not changing much about my approach. I’m still doing both traditional layouts and a weekly pocket album and I’m still doing it all digitally, of course!

I am frequently inspired by digital products. It would be impossible to guess just how many of my pages were created because I wanted to use a great piece of word art or a unique element. More and more I am inspired by the brilliant and creative journal cards that many designers make to accompany digital kits. I often use these journal cards on my pocket pages.

Another way to use these cards is to lay them out seamlessly on a blank canvas in a grid pattern, making a flat background for your page. I love to do this with themed journal cards because it pulls a page together very quickly. Here’s one I did using a kit with a goal / resolutions theme:

(Note that for some of the spaces, I just used card stock from the kit instead of using all journal cards which may have been a bit overwhelming visually.)

There are many different patterns that can be used to lay out the journal cards – it just takes some experimenting until the entire page is filled.

Next I added in some journalling and elements and swapped out one of the paper spaces for a photo.

Supplies: All Year Round: Resolutions by Jady Day Studio and Traci Reed

And that’s it! I used the beautiful cards and made a page in a flash.

Photo Goals for 2016

At the end of 2014, I wrote this post: Photo Goals for the New Year. Writing that post helped me clarify my view of my photography and what I find most important.

And then 2015 kicked my behind!

It was a hard year personally, which is why I didn’t do photo-a-day for the first time in six years. It was the right choice for 2015, but 2016 has brought with it lots of inspiration, ideas, and dreams. I’ll be picking up my camera again in a more intentional way. With that said, here are my 2016 photo goals:

1. MORE PHOTOS OF ME. I am not vain and I do not necessarily like having my picture taken. However, I do want my kids to see that I was a part of their lives. I want to be able to look back on my life—my years as a mother especially—and see the small ins and outs of a life well-lived. With six children, I will spend almost THIRTY years taking care of children on a day-to-day basis. I want photos of what will probably amount to almost a third of my life. I am not looking for posed photos, but of real photos of me doing what I do all day long: the routines, the hobbies, the work, the snuggles. Look for more of this in a post to come!

2. MORE PHOTOS OF FOOD: This may seem silly, but food is such a big part of my life! I cook for eight people every day and often for guests. I love to cook and I love to make food pretty. It’s one of the things I want to remember and I want my children to remember. I want to take more photos of food preparation, of eating, and also of the finished product. I have to ask myself, “How many hours of my life do I spend in the kitchen? Is this proportional to the number of photos I have?”

3. BACK TO PHOTO-A-DAY: I started Photo-a-day back in 2009. I did it for SIX years. Those photos and the little captions that went with them are one of my most precious possessions. In those six years, I captured our real life. The good, the bad, the silly, the sweet, the real, the messy, the joy. I LOVE them. For personal reasons, I chose to step away from the project in 2015. It was a good choice for the year. I still took photos, but not nearly to the extent I usually do. I miss the photos of everyday life and so I have restarted for 2016. Now to get back to remembering to do it! For many years, I barely had to think about it. Now some days I have to spend ten minutes just looking for my camera! Things need to change!

4. CAPTURING THE REAL LIVES OF OTHERS: Like I mentioned above, I love the “real life” photos I have of my family. Those photos will always be more precious to me than the posed images. Traditional portraits have their place and purpose, but it is the “life as it is” that really gets me excited. I want to work toward capturing that beauty and joy for others this year. I don’t do a lot of photography for others, but I want to be more intentional about only saying yes to those people who will allow me to capture the real moments rather than the posed ones.

5. TEACHING OTHERS: Photography has been such a gift to me. It fills my heart and soul in a way that I can’t quite explain. It has taught me gratitude and with gratitude comes joy. Why wouldn’t I want that for others? I plan to find ways to teach other about photography and editing. I want others to be able to pick up their camera (whether a phone or a DSLR), and capture the beauty that is right in front of them. Many people are intimidated when it comes to learning to take better photos. It doesn’t have to be that way. I want to help.

So there you have it. My photo goals for 2016. What about you? Do you have any goals?

Gratitude Journal {week one}

I’ve said it many times…one of the unexpected but all-too-needed benefits of me falling in love with photography and scrapbooking is that they taught me to be thankful.

When I pause, even for the split-second it takes for me to click the shutter button, and really notice what is in front of me, joy comes rushing in.

It’s only when I am too busy to slow down and see all the beauty before me that I find frustration, discontent, and apathy.

Taking photos and recording our everyday memories reminds me—on a daily basis—that even amidst the very real struggles of life, there is very real joy as well. I don’t want to wake up one day and realize I missed the beauty of my life.

There is always something to be thankful for.

On Sundays this year at The Daily Digi, we are going to be sharing a FREE weekly gratitude journal spread. These pages are a place for you to record little memories you don’t want to forget, little reasons to be grateful. Each week their will be a gratefulness quote as well as a few photo spots.

You can use these FREE pages in a number of ways:

1) As digital scrapbooking templates. The download will always include .psd files for both 2-page 12×12 spreads as well as 2-page 8.5×11 spreads. You can add your own papers and elements and scrap ’till your heart’s content! (This is also a good option for those of you who get twitchy because I started the week with Friday. Since January 1 is a Friday, I like to start each week that way, but you may not! Feel free to adjust as needed!

2) As a digital journal. Keep the colors and text just as they are. Simply flatten the layers and add your notes of gratitude. Easy peasy!

3) As printed pages. Print out and write on them the good old-fashioned way. There is a .pdf file included for printing two letter-sized pages. Print your photos and attach!

Be sure to be back next week for your next FREE journal template!

Our members love “Daily Digi Day!” Many of the annual members have already been downloading for a few hours because they get access when the calendar changes to a new month. Here’s what our members said in the comments yesterday:

This is by far the best deal on the planet. If I never spend another dime on supplies all month, I get enough to do all the scrapbooking I plan to do. I will complete my 64th month in January. It’s hard to believe I’ve been a member that long. And, yet, each month it’s totally worth it.- Valerie

Thanks for another terrific year. It was fortuitous that 3 of the designers this month were from Scrap Orchard. I will miss that store and I will miss MLE Card’s contributions to the digital world. I’m glad that Bella Gypsy and Scrappin with Liz have found new homes. Thanks for the kits this month – indeed beautiful! Happy New Year! – Karyn Allen

PS: Congratulations to the FOURTEEN random winners selected from yesterday’s comments, each person won $10 in product from one of last month’s designers. Be sure to check out the Rafflecopter widget in yesterday’s post to see if you won! All winners will receive their prize via the email listed in Rafflecopter within 48 hours.
