Peeking Through

A lot goes into making a good photo. It’s easy to assume that it’s all about the camera. Or the lenses. Or some fancy Photoshop skills. The truth is, there are many aspects that go into great photos and the individual photographer can make use of them in innumerable ways.

As we learn about composition, we become more aware of how set up our shot affects the mood and outcome of the photo. Many years ago I wrote about angle and how much in can change a photo. Other compositional techniques include rule of thirds, visual triangles, and framing.

Today I want to mention one of my favorite compositional techniques, and that is layering. Layering in composition means have specific foreground, middle ground, and background. When we isolate one of the layers, it adds interest and intrigue to the photo.

This is one place having a dSLR and lenses capable of shooting wide open (2.8, 1.4, etc.) However, don’t think you can’t do any of this with your phone or point and shoot. Often, there is a “portrait mode” that allows you to focus on one thing in your frame while blurring out other areas.

In these photos of my kids at the river, I chose to use a layering technique to create the idea that I was peeking in on them…which I was. Sitting back and watching my kids is one of my most favorite things to do. By allowing something in the foreground (in this instance, a bush), I set apart my kids. It’s pretty apparent that there is a tree/bush in front of me.

In the following photos, I took a more subtle approach. I let the branches take on a more wispy nature and in some of the photos, you can barely tell they are there. However, their impact is powerful. I look at these photos and get the sense that I was privy to some secret and magic world of childhood. And that is pretty much how I felt!

I’ve said it many times: the goal in my photography is to capture in a photo what I feel in my heart. Knowing the techniques and tools that are available to us as photographers helps me achieve that.

P.S. For more photos of our beautiful morning, you can see my personal blog.

Name

Hello! I’ delighted to be back for a fourth time at The Daily Digi. My name is Pamela but around digi-land I’m best known as Miss Mint or MM for short. I’m the owner/designer/tech support/customer service representative/social media & marketing manager/regular gal Friday behind Peppermint Creative. I live in Toronto, Canada. I’ve been designing digital scrapbook products since 2006 and am thrilled to still be going at it. What’s not to love about a job that justifies doodling at work? When I’m not working I’m usually either asleep (because it’s the middle of the night) or at the gym. Additional hobbies include: picture taking, guitar playing, trying and creating new healthy recipes, movie watching and procrastinating. Lesser known and non-important facts: I used to be a competitive tap dancer, I don’t like coffee and I like funny looking clouds.

started

My professional background is in copywriting and graphic design – two skills have come in very handy. I’m probably one of the only designers that is not and never was a scrapbooker. I love to design and let others work their magic with their amazing scrapping skills. I worked at an interactive advertising agency for a while and then did some freelance design but found it really creatively unfulfilling. Then I stumbled into designing scrapbooking products as a bit of a happy accident and loved it. I started setting up a store just to fill the creative void I had been feeling figuring it would be a fun little hobby. In April 2006, Peppermint Creative was born and it unexpectedly snowballed into my full-time job.

inspired

I’m not a scrapbooker, I just like to design so my inspiration mainly comes from my amazing customers and my super talented team. I love that they are not shy about telling me what kinds of designs they want to see. For me, designing is a puzzle you can never solve. There is always more to learn and more to try. With every kit I feel like I always learn at least 3 new things. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shouted at my computer ‘there’s a button for that?!?’ after discovering a hidden Photoshop function that completes a task I’ve been doing in 34 manual steps in just one click.

tools

Computer: I do all my designing on a 15″ MacBook Pro with Retina Display with 16 GB of RAM. I have a 2TB EHD to store all my documents and files so I don’t suck up all my laptop space. When I’m home I have it hooked up to two external Cinema displays so I get the real estate of the double big screen and the optional the portability of the laptop. Best of both worlds!

Program: Still rocking it out with Photoshop CS6 and Adobe Illustrator CS6. Can’t live without them.

Camera: I have a Canon 7D which I have not been using nearly as much as I should. Lenses: 50mm f/1.8, 17-85mm f/1.4-5.6, 75-300mm f/1.4-5.6 and the 430EX Speedlite External Flash. I also use my Olympus Pen E-PL1 quite a bit but now which is a cross between a point and shoot and a DSLR, which is pretty cool but now that I have the iPhone5 I’ve been using that as my camera most often.

Anything Else: I also use a Wacom Tablet which I love and my printer died over a year ago and I have yet to find a replacement. I can’t believe I’ve been without a decent printer for more than a year.

tipstricks

Here’s a quick little keyboard shortcut I use in Photoshop constantly. Create a duplicate layer by holding down Cmd+Shift on a Mac or Windows Button +Shift on a PC while dragging your mouse over the layer you wish to copy. Be sure that layer is selected in your layers palette. As long as you’re holding these keys down while dragging, the duplicate will stay in line with the original keeping your copies in alignment. It’s a great design trick.

favorite

I’m totally obsessed with these pocket page templates. Designed to help you get started and inspire fun & new ways to lay out pocket page spreads. They include color coded layers to make it easy to drag card designs from page to page or to re-arrange within your page to customize the layout to suit your needs.

Name

I’m Stephanie and I’m the person behind the Bee Tree Studios name! I live on the East Coast and I also have two little boys who are just the best thing ever! I enjoy spending my “me time” being creative and I’ve always been a bit quirky. My interests range from Ancient Egyptian history to Modern Fashion Design and so much in between! I love creating on the computer as well as reading, binge watching my favorite shows and singing loudly when no one is around. A few years ago, I fell in love again with Disney and with my kids, have enjoyed many, MANY trips to the Happiest Place On Earth aka: Disney World! I’m also not a huge fan of snow, constant rain or oppressively hot weather… which means I’m an “indoor kind of girl”… I’m a walking book of geeky interests and contradictions but I’m certainly UNIQUE!

layout

Being a Disney loving person, I have TONS of photos from our Disney trips! I really love the Blast Off collection and knew it would be perfect for the main photo of this page. My kids LOVE Buzzlightyear, Woody and all the Toy Story Characters. This was the first time my youngest, a HUGE Buzz fan, got to meet his favorite character. My goodness, it was such a process to get the shy boy to take a photo after talking of nothing else for so long but it was so worth it, even if I had to get in the middle of the photo too! It’s one of my favorite photos from that day so I thought it needed documenting!

CREDITS: Blast Off Bundle by Bee Tree Studios.

started

I started playing around in paper scrapbooking about ten years ago but space is limited in a small collage dorm so I looked for other options. A few years later I came across digital scrapbooking, I ended up with Photoshop Elements 6. I was in heaven! I dabbled a little in designing a few things for family but I didn’t really do much scrapbooking. At this time, my oldest child was little so most of my free time disappeared. After my youngest was born, I started taking more photos but didn’t do anything with them. A couple years ago, I rediscovered digital scrapbooking so I dusted off Photoshop Elements and learned everything I could. Within a short time I had mastered the basics. At this point, I learned about creative teams and sent in a few applications. I must admit, my first application was to my “dream team” and although I didn’t get selected, I had found my passion. I landed on a few teams, all of which I enjoyed and I stayed with them for over a year. I also ended up on my “dream team” six months later, when the designer contacted me. I’ve been on about ten creative teams, most for over a year and I’m actually still on few teams, including my “dream team”. About two years ago, I started designing a few free things. I had learned a lot from the designers I worked for and decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 and jump into the deep end of designing! Since then, I’ve been at two different shops and have learned even MORE! I love that I have such an eclectic mix of style loves, I can never commit to “just one look”. Even with my scrapbook pages, some days I feel like creating something more Art Journal-ish, other days I’m feeling Clean and Simple so I run the whole range of styles depending on what I’m feeling like when I sit down to create!

inspired

What inspires me to actually create is the NEED to be creative. I’m not sure how to explain it other than it feels like I MUST create or I’ll explode, it’s an outlet for my feelings, thoughts and energy. It’s almost like therapy and I love having something pretty at the end! As to what things inspire my creativity, well, really anything! I love looking at Pinterest, especially the Graphic Design section. I’ve always loved looking at product packaging, posters, textiles and anything “pretty”!

tools

Computer: I’m currently using a 27″ iMac (late 2013 model) that I got last year! I love it, the screen is HUGE! I’m running OSX Yosemite and the computer specs are: 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 24GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM (until I upgrade to the full 32GB hopefully next year!), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 708M graphics cards and a 3.12GB Fusion Hard Drive. I also have 2 external hard drives that I store all my scrapbook files on because I also have a MacBook Pro that I take with my when I travel! It’s a 13″ MacBook Pro (late 2011 model) running OSX Yosemite. It’s specs are: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics card with a 500GB Hard Drive. It’s a great laptop to take with me but I’m so pampered with my HUGE desktop screen that it takes a bit to get used to switching to my laptop on trips! I also have a DELL monitor that I use as a second screen, mainly for watching show while I work.

Program: I mostly use Photoshop CS6 but I also use Illustrator CS6 as well.

Camera: I use my iPhone 6 Plus camera for most of my everyday photos or quick snaps while traveling. I chose the 6 Plus over the standard iPhone 6 mostly because of the camera upgrade! I also have a Samsung NX1000 for taking “nice photos” especially on vacations! I currently have a 20-50mm, a 50-200mm and a 16mm lenses for the camera too. My favorite is the 16mm lens because it get SO MUCH in the photo!

Anything Else: I also have a new Wacom Intuos medium size tablet. I upgraded from my old white Wacom Bamboo this year! I found that I really needed a larger work surface on the tablet when I upgraded to the new iMac!

tipstricks

One of the things I love is Smart Objects in Photoshop! I’m constantly tweaking, rotating and editing layers so by making them Smart objects, I can stack and rearrange filters, resize, rotate, etc. until I’m happy with the final look, all without destructively editing my layers! A close second favorite tool is the Puppet Warp, it’s amazing the preciseness of that tool! I always love learning new tricks in Photoshop!

favorite

I really love almost everything in the store so it was really hard to choose! I love It’s A Jungle Out There because it’s just so fun with all the animals and safari elements! I love working with themes and my kids LOVE animals so it was quite fun to create! The colors were from pre-chosen Bits-N-Pieces color sets (the mix and match monthly event) but the colors just said Safari to me so that’s what I went with!

Breaking Up Journaling

Breaking Up Journaling

A lot of people find large blocks of text to be intimidating, even in the most reader-friendly of fonts and font size.

From time to time, I do like to do a lot of journaling on my scrapbook pages. How do I keep it from being “too much”? Usually I add headings or bold parts of the text to give the eye places to pause. My most used trick though is to break up the journaling into smaller pieces on the page.

Examples of Pages

On these pages, there isn’t actually a lot of journaling, but by splitting it up on the page, it moves the reader’s eye across the entire design. The journaling is now a design element and helps with the flow of the page.

On these pages, there is a bit more journaling and it is split roughly in half. Now the centre break gives the reader a chance to pause before moving on to the second half.

Do you break up journaling on scrapbook pages?
