I was introduced to my first pixel around the age 10, when my father
opened up an old school paint program on his computer, I was instantly
intrigued by the tiny little pixels making up the images. An eye was
the first image I created with pixels. I had no idea I would end up
working with them as a designer, its a dream come true. I started
paper scrapbooking 8 years ago. I didn’t have much time (or money) for
it, even though I loved the idea. When I started digi scrapbooking I
was instantly in love! Finally I could use all my photoshop knowledge
as a graphic designer for more personal projects. The transition from
scrapbooker to designer came after the release of my first book on
Digital Scrapbooking in 2009. Designing scrapbook products just seemed
like the most obvious and natural step to take.

I used the photo as a jumping off point for the theme of the design. The lighthouse has become a symbol for those who are lost or in a storm and I feel like I’ve just come out of a very crazy time of my life with my faith as strong as ever… this page means a lot to me.

The Makery Collection and The Makery Simplified Spreads are one of my favorite products. The colours are inspired by a pinterest post. This year I’ve challenged myself into fusing my mixed media roots in with my digital collections and I’m loving it! I’ve never been more satisfied with my design work than I am right now.

I think what makes the ‘Make It Meaningful – Collection’ so special is the soft muted colour scheme. I really cant remember where the colour inspiration came from, but I know the water colored lemons I did came from a photo I took of an old plate at a batch in Raglan, NZ. I’m guessing thats what I took the cue from. I remember coming home from that holiday and cherishing the memories and being so happy over the photos captured.

A to Z at The Daily Digi

A to Z at The Daily Digi

I often browse the archived articles at the Daily Digi. There is a bounty of information to be found there. I put together an A to Z of some great articles and categories that I think are worth revisiting.

A is for Actions!Lights, Camera, Actions! shows us all about actions (pre-recorded steps in Photoshop) and how to use them in scrapbooking.

B is for Brushes! – Learn how to create brushes from PNG files.

C is for Contributor Features! – The monthly contributor features are a fun way to “meet” designers and learn some of the best tips and tricks.

D is for Drop Shadows! – We have a plethora of drop shadow articles. One of my favourites is To Shadow or Not to Shadow? where Katie showed us some layouts with and without shadows – and what a difference they make!

E is for Everyday! – Everyday photography that is. We learned how to use Lego minifigures to practice photograpy

F is for Fonts! – I’m an avid font collector. Every few months I like to share a few of my favourites here.

G is for Gray! – Stef showed us how to turn our gray skies blue.

H is for Him! – All about how to get Dad in the picture.

I is for Interesting! – I’m thinking about participating in Ali Edwards’ December Daily project this year… Luckily Katie the Scrapbook Lady shared tips for those of us who worry that our lives aren’t interesting enough for December Daily.

J is for Journal Cards! – I love working with journal cards, and keeping them organized means being able to make the most of the ones that I have in my stash.

K is for Kids! – My daughter is 9 and really wants to start digi scrapbooking. I’ve started her with phonebooking (see below) and we do some really basic scrapping in Photoshop together.

L is for Layout Design! – One of my go-to tricks is to move the entire design around the page.

M is for Masks! Using masks to erase backgrounds from photos is a trick used in photography all the time, but it’s an equally good trick to apply to digital scrapbooking.

N is for Notepad! – How do you gather memories? When inspiration strikes, I need to write things down right away or else it’s gone forever.

O is for Opacity! Adjusting opacity is an easy way to blend items together and mimic velum.

P is for Phonebooking! – Steph is my phonebooking hero. I’m giving it a go with some of my vacation photos!

Q is for Questions!Asking your family questions is an easy way to develop journaling for your next scrapbook page.

R is for Rotate! – Part of the top 10 reasons to love templates, you can rotate them, shrink and expand them, flip them, and move all the pieces around.

S is for Style!Styles are an important Photoshop tool. I use them all the time for drop shadows. I want to use more of them for making titles and simple elements.

T is for Tags!Tags are a key part of my organization system for digital scrapbooking supplies. But there are many other ways to organize – the trick is to find the one that works for you.

U is for Underline! – Making your own journal lines is easy and there are a few different ways to try it.

V is for Volume!Power scrapping tricks can help you quickly make a lot of pages.

W is for Ways to Use Paint!Paint is fun and, in digital scrapbooking, it’s mess-free!

X is for eXcellent Conversations! Scrapbooking fun conversations is easy and special.

Y is for Yellow! Communicating with colour can have a big impact.

Z is for for ctrl-Z! – And all of our other favourite Photoshop shortcuts!

Tips from the Team

CREDITS: Nuts About You by Jady Day Studio (TDF#80); Font: DJB Almost Perfect.

I thought it would be fun interview a few of our team members and find out what their favorites Photoshop tips are! I love learning new ways to do things in Photoshop. I hope a few of these tips inspire you to try something new!

JennieV shared how she likes to make her thumbnails larger in Photoshop/Elements. I love this tip so much that it is one of the first things I always set up in my Photoshop preferences when I get a new version! Click on the contextual menu on the layers panel. Choose PANEL OPTIONS. Then select the larger thumbnail. You can also check “LAYER BOUNDS” option if you want the thumbnail to zoom in on the layer object instead of showing the object in position on the page.

Sharon loves templates and shared her process for clipping photos and papers to template layers.

When you’re ready to clip a paper to a layer in the template, place the paper above the layer and while holding the ALT/OPT key, hover between the two layers. A mouse icon changes and when it does, click between the two layers. You can then resize or move the paper around, without moving the template layer. When the layout is finished, merge the paper and template layer by clicking on the paper layer and clicking CTRL/CMD+E. This reduces the file size in the long run. NOTE: The mouse icon looks different in different versions of Photoshop/Elements. It might look like an arrow, interlocking squares or interlocking circles. The key is to watch it change from a mouse pointer to something else. (CREDITS: Feeling Good Template by Tinci; Shore Thing by Chelle’s Creations.)

Vicki loves her opacity sliders. You can type in a number in the opacity box, or simply drag left to right on the word Opacity to “scrub” the value higher or lower.

LulyG shared the 4 steps she uses when saving her layouts.

1. Save as a .psd file straight from Photoshop or Elements. (NOTE: Or use a layered TIF files to save a smaller file.)

2. Flatten the image. Save as a full-size .jpg.

3. Resize (IMAGE>IMAGE SIZE), change to 72 ppi, 600 x 600 pixels. Then I use
Unsharp Mask and save as FILENAME_web. That keeps me from uploading these files for printing.

4. Finally, in case of disaster, I upload a full-size JPG to Persnickety Prints, Shutterfly, Flickr, Google Photos or another online services. That way if my backup fails, the files are at least available for printing.

Toria shared her favorite keyboard commands. These are some of my favorites too!

B = Selects the brush tool

[ and ] = Makes brush bigger smaller

CMDCTRL+PLUS or MINUS = zooms in and out of the page

Cheryle shared her favorite
shadowing tip using the wave filter that is brilliant. I have to say, I’m going to be making use of this tip myself! It is going to revolutionize the way I do my shadows.

Add a layer style. Then release the shadow to it’s own layer. (NOTE: PSE users can use
a special script by Anna Forrest to do this.) Finally, run the Wave filter (FILTER>DISTORT>WAVE). The result is unique on each item, adding dimension and variety. Brilliant!

Finally, my tip of the day is an easy way to duplicate a layer. Hold in the ALT/OPT key and drag your layer on the layers panel up or down. Release the mouse to drop a duplicate of that layer in that spot. So easy and fast! I hope these fun tips inspire you to learn more about Photoshop.

What is your favorite tip? I’m still amazed that with over 20 years of experience with Photoshop, I STILL learn newer or better ways to do things! Scrap on….

layout

I scrap digital layouts, hybrid layouts and paper layouts. When the kids were younger, I did a lot of digi scrap. No mess and always the possibility to hit save and go. In 2011 I got a Studio place for my own and started paper scrapping again. Paper scrapping balances the time I spend working in front of the computer. I actually only digi scrap when I want the same photos to go to all three kids albums, so I make one layout and print it three times 🙂

DesignerLO

started

I found scrapbooking when I moved overseas in 2000. Back then, I started a blog and created some pixel graphics to decorate it. They got a great feedback and some months later I opened my first digital store. My customers also used my graphics for scrapbooking and I decided to start designing high-resolution graphics in 2007.
I sold my digital designs at Elemental Scraps, Scrapbook Graphics and Two Peas in a Bucket. I do not design digital kits anymore though. Two years ago, I was in the search of Lego themed graphics to decorate my son’s 6th birthday and could not find what I was looking for. I them decided to design the party for my own. From them on I am designing party packages and already have +40 different themes on my store with more to come. If I only had as much time as I have ideas!

inspired

My greatest inspiration source are color and art. I have a sketchbook where I collect photos and color combos that I find in real life and pinterest for all the online inspiration. I love pinterest and I love a good magazine!

tools

Computer: I have a PC with 8 Giga RAM, 2x 1TB hard drives and one huge monitor.

Program: I work with Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4.

Camera: My camera is Nikon D50. I always think about upgrading it but it is really great and somehow I stick with it. I love my Nikon!

Anything Else: I have a wacom intuos tablet and a pen and I can’t use the mouse anymore LOL only the pen. I love to draw and to work with it.

tipstricks

I really love the internet, Pinterest and Photoshop but I am sure to have enough offline time everyday. The time I spend away from my computer recharges my imagination and makes me aware of the true colors around me. I am pretty sure that my flow of ideas never ceases because I nurture a close relationship with some little sketchbooks and watercolor pencils. I can’t recommend it enough.

favorite

I am currently obssessed with cute animals, if you visit my store you will understand what I mean. There is not only a flamingo party (my favorite at the moment), but fox, raccoon, owl, elephant and dog parties as well. I can’t stop.

The most popular parties on my store are the “Born to Build” parties. I guess I was not the only one searching for a preppy building party 😉

I think they are so popular because they are easy to personalize – think about building some favorite sets as table decoration – and because both kids and parents are crazy about the little bricks.

Inspiring Words: August 16 {free printable}

It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with another free printable card! I just love having sweet little cards ready to send to friends and family!

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” — Vincent Van Gogh

What truth!

We always seem to believe that great things come easily for others. We think others are “lucky,” “talented,” and “blessed.” However, I am learning now more than ever that great things happen one tiny bit at a time. Every book is written one word at a time. Every marathon is run one stride at a time. Every amazing life is lived one moment at a time.

Click HERE to download the card. Once you are in Dropbox, right click and choose download. Resize if necessary, print, write, and send! It only takes a few minutes to brighten someone’s day or to give yourself the reminder you need.

And if you missed our previous freebies, you can grab them now!

layout

Every year my family (my parents, siblings and their kids) create a family float for the small parade in our community. We brainstorm about ideas and themes for months and then secretly prepare (sew, build, paint, & choreograph) to surprise our neighbors the morning of the parade. We’ve been doing it for 17 years now and I’ve scrapped the memories every year.
Last summer I created this little sampler-sized kit specifically for these memories. One of my favorite parts is the QR code that links to a video of my son dancing. We didn’t teach him anything, but he’s seen the movie enough times that he did his best Dick VanDyke impersonation and danced his way through the parade route. I love being able to include videos with my layouts using QR codes.
I have a
you-tube tutorial explaining how I did it.

DesignerLO

started

I’ve been scrapbooking forever, & I LOVE it. My first scrapbooks were made using typing paper, with construction paper mats and titles cut from magazines, or drawn on with markers…all held together with rubber cement. (No, really. The first scrapbook class I took…the teacher TOLD us to use those things.)
Scrapbooking has changed a lot over the years, but I’ve always enjoyed creating my own supplies. In my “paper” days, I had a large collection of stuff…not just papers & embellishments, but tons of ink, paint, dyes, fabric, clay, acetate, & other crafty things so I could modify my stash.
Frustrated with too much stuff on layouts (the paper couldn’t support it) and the expense of re-making each layout 6 times (one for me and one for each child) I quit. Totally quit. Sold some of my HUGE stash and gave away the rest. I started printing “plain” hardcover books with just my photos & journaling. Then two years later (2008) while recovering from surgery I was surfing the internet looking for something to use on an album for my daughter and stumbled onto digital scrapbooking. I was immediately hooked.
Just like before I found myself tweaking supplies to fit my needs, so I started putting my collections together, and offering them to friends. After winning a design contest in 2009, Chelle’s Creations was born.

inspired

My memories and my desire to share them. A couple years ago I got so busy with life and designing I almost stopped scrapping. We took our then 4 year old to Disneyland and I was afraid he’d forget about it before I could get it scrapped. So I decided to just do one layout every day until that album was complete. He was SO excited to see it, that I started on another album. Just 1 layout a day. That pace keeps m excited and inspired.

tools

Computer: I have a MacBook Pro 17″ with a 1T SSD and 16 Gigs of RAM running OS X Yosemite. It goes EVERYWHERE with me. But when I am home at at my desk, I plug in either my Wacom Cintiq (combination tablet & monitor) if I’m extracting or embellishing clays or a DELL 27″ monitor for everything else.

Program: Creative Cloud 2015, both Photoshop & Illustrator. I dabble with the Adobe mobile apps, but I am in photoshop & Illustrator nearly every day.

Camera: Nikon D5300

Anything Else: LOVE my Lacie Rugged EHDs. I enjoyed my 2T so much that I just got a 4T.
Canoscan 8800F & a tool box full of clay.

tipstricks

Print your layouts! I know. It doesn’t seem like much of a tip, but it is a REALLY good idea. First, things sometimes look different on the screen than they do in print. You’ll learn if your font size is big enough to read or if that button is now 3 inches across, or even that you don’t really like shadows that dark in print. Additionally seeing your layouts in print is SO motivating! You’ll be excited to get more memories captured! And your friends and family with LOVE getting to see the layouts too!

favorite

SO hard to pick a favorite. Zoo Crew {jungle} makes me smile every time I see it. I think it’s the whimsical way the creatures turned out. The panda looks so huggable…the monkey looks so playful…and the gorilla…he just makes me smile.
