Let Your Colors Shine

card from True Colors: Cards by Kristin Cronin-Barrow and Jady Day Studio

It’s almost a new month. Always hard to believe and yet always true. As you start a new month, I want to encourage you to let your colors shine.

Brené Brown, in her #1 Bestselling book Daring Greatly, says many profound things. My book is filled with probably as much highlighted text as unhighlighted. Steph introduced me to the book and she has mentioned it here before.

I think the greatest thing I took away from the book is a courage to be me. The real me. I don’t have to be what anyone else wants me to be or expects me to be. I am unique. I am loved. I have something valuable to offer.

I’ve spent much of my life trying to look/act/feel like someone else. What I didn’t realize is that by doing that, I missed (and everyone else missed) the opportunity to know me. Whether it is in scrapping, work, family, church, photography, or anything else, there is only one me. I better let it shine.

What about you? Do you feel you can truly be yourself? In scrapping and crafting? In photography? In motherhood? In life?

6 Ways Timehop will Inspire Your Scrapbooking

Have you got Timehop? The Timehop app is a fun way to look back at your social media timeline.

Available on Android and iPhone, Timehop will remind you each morning to look at what you were doing online 1, 2, or even 8 years ago. You can even install their Sync app on your desktop to have reminder from your photo library.

I’ve enjoyed looking at this app and it’s become a wealth of scrapbooking ideas for me!

Here’s just some of the ways Timehop has inspired my pages:

Then and Now

I saved some of my favourite outfits for my little girl Lucy so I’ve just begun spotting photos of Emily in the same clothes, at almost a year older. It was so striking to see the difference in size between the two little girls that I had to include that in my 12 month layout for Lucy’s baby album. See the bottom right pocket? Same windcheater- Emily is 2 and Lucy is 1 those photos.

Photos I’ve Missed

I don’t know about you but with three of four devices that take photos, and little hands who love to take selfies, I’ve often discovered photos I’ve missed. Here’s a page I created of just the photos Emily took one day.

Take a look inside my album to see a layout with photos from my daughter's perspective! #digiscrap #digital #scrapbooking

Happy Memories

Sometimes we take photos in the moment, thinking ‘I’ll want to scrap that!’ and then forget all about it?

2015-03-11 07.57.45

This photos is one of those moments, and when I see this kind of happy photo pop up in Timehop I’ll be keen to sit down and scrap!

Quotables

I enjoy looking back through through the status updates as well as the photos and videos on Timehop. These short little sentences can be great jumping off points or even all the journalling you’ll need for a layout.

When I created this layout, I used one quotable I saw in the app, then browsed around my Facebook feed for more gems to create this layout:

Seasonal Scrapping

If you love playing with seasonal supplies and kits, Timehop is a great way to keep an eye out for photos from the same time last year. When see your first summer barbecue photo come up in your feed, you can go shopping and justify that purchase by scrapping right away!

Just the other day I saw I camping photo in my Timehop and I know there’s a lot of new camping kits out in time for the northern hemisphere summer, so I can easily scrap them now with some of the latest releases. No more putting off using supplies until after the next time we go camping!

Themes through the Year

When you see your photos one day at a time you begin to notice patterns. Some I’ve seen:

  • Babies like pears! I’ve had cute videos of all three of ours eating pears. Maybe I need to scrap that?
  • I take lots more photos when I walk in cold weather!
  • We have lots of backyard picnics.

Take a look inside my album to see my Picnic layout! #digiscrap #digital #scrapbooking

Take a look inside my album to see my Finish layout! #digiscrap #digital #scrapbooking

  • Out house has a lot of light – this is intentional and I need to scrap about how and why we made this house light and bright.
  • Children bringing things inside: sticks, rocks, flowers, weeks, passionfruit. I have a lot of photos of little ‘gifts’ I receive.

Ok, so have I convinced you that you need to run and download Timehop? I hope so!

The Creative Life {free printable poster}

“To live a creative life, we must give up our fear of being wrong.”

I love this quote so much! I spend so much of my time being afraid of failing. My mother tells the story of me learning to walk: I refused to do it for anyone but she would often see me “practice” in my crib. Once I finally performed for others, I could run. Apparently I have never been too fond of this failing thing.

I don’t like to fail. I especially don’t like to fail if others can see. And yet, if I want my creativity to grow, I must be willing to try and expect to make mistakes. Sometimes life’s most beautiful things were from someone’s “mistake.”

I created this poster using Vinnie Pearce’s Watercoulor Papers, part of this month’s Digi Files.

You can download this free printable HERE. Hang it up and remember to let go of the fear!

Once you are in Dropbox, right click and choose download. Resize if necessary, print, write, and send! It only takes a few minutes to brighten someone’s day or to give yourself the reminder you need.

On or Off the Page?

On or Off the Page?

I have noticed that some digital scrapbookers prefer to keep all of their elements entirely on the page. Other scrapbookers scrapbook right to the edge of pages, allowing elements like leaves and flowers to disappear off the edge of the canvas. Personally, I like and use both styles.

Staying on the Page

On the pages below, all of the elements and papers used in the design are kept on the canvas.

The first example is designed around a mat that is slightly smaller than the 12×12 page. On the second example, all of the design is clustered around a central photo collage.

On both pages, all of the elements are shown whole on the page.

Supplies: A Taste of Summer by Studio Basics and Digital Scrapbook Ingredients

Supplies: True Friend by Tickled Pink Studio, Background Noise Vol 2 by Jenn Barrette, {not so perfect} masks #1 by Studio Basic

Off the Page

On the pages below, some of the elements fall off the edge of the page. It’s a creative option available to digital scrapbookers. Although it is less “realistic”, I like the fullness of these pages.

Supplies: EZ Albums v.13 by Erica Zane, EZ Albums v.13 Stitches by Erica Zane, So Routine : The Collection by Amanda Yi

Supplies: Blink of An Eye by Traci Reed and KCB, Into the Woods by KCB, Miss Merry Sunshine by Erica Zane, Background Noise by Jenn Barrette, Extra Extra by Traci Reed and KCB, Dandelion Wishes by Jenn Barrette, Waiting for the Rain alpha by Shawna Clingerman, Mad About Metal Alpha by Shawna Clingerman, Give Me More Arrows by Shawna Clingerman, Social Butterfly by Jenn Barrette and Allison Pennington, Come Together by Melissa Bennett

Do you scrapbook with all of your elements on the page or do you let them go over the edge of the canvas?

Name

I am 39 and I am from Bulgaria. I live in a small academic town on the Danube. It is a quiet and beautiful town with many young people. I have a 8-year old daughter who is my everything.

I work as a full time graphic designer at a Publishing House 16 years now. Digital scrapbooking and designing is not merely a second job for me. It is something I really love, as it allows me to express myself, to give freedom to my imagination, and above all, I do enjoy being involved in it.

As for my free time, mountains are one of my passions. It is such a great source of energy and joy! I also love reading books, going for walks in the countryside, biking with my daughter.

layout

It’s hard to choose only one layout 🙂 I love all of my pages because each keeps some of our memories. This time I decided to feature this old layout. It’s nothing special but when I was browsing my folders last week I found it and so many memories came back. There is no journaling on this page, no date, just the year but this is one whole year of our life in pictures and I remembered so many things. And I decided to do such layout every year – just the year in pictures.

started

I came across Digital Scrapbooking by chance in 2007 while I was reading the posts in a forum. It seemed quite interesting to me and I decided I should have a try at it. So I did and I just got addicted.
In 2011, a van hit me as I was going to work in the morning and I had a leg badly broken. I had to undergo several surgeries. I was bed-ridden for a very long time, and I couldn’t go to work. I spent those endless days at the computer at home while my daughter was at the kindergarten. I scrapped many pictures. I had many photos of my daughter with her dinosaurs (she was crazy about them) and I started looking around the shops for a good dinosaur kit. Then I thought I might try to make my own. So I got to it and made my dinosaur kit as well as some other stuff … it was such a fun! At first, I did not intend to sell them, but then I decided to try out of curiosity and in June 2011, my first kit was released.

inspired

Each time it is something different. Small, ordinary everyday things inspire me the most.

tools

Computer: I work on a PC that runs Windows 7 64 bit, an Intel Core at 2,8 GHz, with 8 GB RAM, 23″ monitor.

Program: I use mainly Photoshop and Illustrator designing my digital scrapbooking products.

Camera: I still don’t have new camera after my old Nikon damaged and last few months I use only with my phone. But I already choose a new camera and I’m going to buy it soon 🙂

Anything Else: I use a Wacom tablet and HP ScanJet scanner.

tipstricks

I love to save time when it’s possible, so here is an easy tip that I use when I design or scrap. It’s about working with text in Photoshop and especially when I design a word art or want my journaling to fit in certain area. When adding text in your layout you don’t need to go to text options to change the size of the letters. Use Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + > to increase or Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + < to decrease size of the selected text until you are happy with the result. This really saves time for me, hope you’ll find it useful too.

favorite

“I Am Who I Am” is one of my favourite kits. Maybe because the inspiration to design it came again from my dearest people – they are all so different from one another with their good features and innocent imperfections, but I love them and I feel blessed to have them in my life just the way they are 🙂

DesFav

popular

I’m not sure but I think Captured is one of the most popular and widely sold of my products lately. May be because it’s versatile enough and can be used with any kind of pictures. Even when there is no story and just a fun or interesting picture that should be scrapped.

Take a {Toaster} Selfie?

I am not sure I can stretch this so much to call this technology, but it’s a fun and silly and actually real thing I couldn’t resist sharing.

The Toaster Selfie

Yes. It’s a real thing. Created by Burnt Impressions, you too can have your selfie on your toast for just $69.95.

I’m not sure anything else needs to be said…other than perhaps we’ve taken this #selfie thing too far 🙂

12 Awesome Scrapbook Pages with MAPS!

I was looking through my layouts from the past year and I came across one from when we were planning our big road trip.

I loved that even though I didn’t have any photos (we were still in the planning stage of our trip), I was able to still document the process. By mapping our trip out online, I just saved my image and used it for my page. It’s even more fun for me to look at now since our route actually changed quite a bit from when I made it.

This got me thinking that I really wanted to see what other scrapbook pages I could find with MAPS! And I found so many amazing ones. Here are 12 awesome scrapbook pages with MAPS!

I love how each of the artists uses maps in new and creative ways. Now I have so many ideas!

P.S. Up, and Away! by Flergs and Wanderlust by Blagovesta Goshea are both great travel kits and are part of this month’s DIGI GAME! $7.50 gets you SEVEN full size products AND the Playbook, our ezine!
