A Time For Weddings

It’s June, and that means wedding season! Summer is such a beautiful time to get married. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing two summer weddings and I have loved it.

With weddings on the mind and on the calendar, I start to feel a bit overwhelmed with the guilt that hangs over my head in regards to my own wedding. Wanna know a secret?

I have been married more than 15 years and I still haven’t done anything with the photos.

It’s time to get ‘er done! My goal for this month is to finally scrap my wedding. Who is with me?

Wanting to get inspired, I asked our previous designers if they had products that would be great for scrapping all those wedding pages. Here’s what they showed me!

This beautiful element pack was part of a BYOC. All of the goodies and inspirational layouts are posted here.

You can also buy the bundle here.

You can see the whole collection here.

You can see the whole bundle as well as some inspirational layouts here.

I think I am going to gather up some of the goodies from above, and then use the templates and process I used for my SCRAP YOUR YEAR class. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the year!

Be sure to check back in tomorrow when we’ll share some wedding page inspiration!

My name is Amber, I am a 40 yr old mom of 4 fantastic kids ranging from elementary to college age. I have been married for 18 years to my very best friend. We work so well because we are both crazy and constantly keep the laughter going. When I’m not designing, I am longing to move back to Tampa – I am a Hoosier right now. You can also find me formulating fragrances and beauty products, dabbling in photography, crocheting, binging on Netflix, cooking gluten free, and just enjoying my little family.

I just love these photos of my daughter when she was 6. The Sweetie Pie Collection was the perfect kit to make a page to capture the feeling of the moment she was so joyfully dancing during her photo shoot.

I got started in digital scrapbooking when looking for photoshop tutorials so I could learn to make my own labels for my fragrance line. I accidentally stumbled upon a digital scrapbook freebie site. I was intrigued with this, because I always loved paper scrapbooking pages but never had the patience to deal with the mess of paper scrapping. I downloaded some some things, and started scrapping. I never looked back. About a year later I was designing in a small store and that was over 6 years ago.

I definitely love color. Colors plays probably the largest part in comprising a design for me. I also love textures and flower patterns are an addiction for me. Plaid is a close second. I find inspiration from everywhere, kids clothing, pinterest, typography, and even seasonal decor and boutiques.

Computer: I have a MSI Apache gaming lappy with dual monitor – I just got my 2nd monitor about 2 weeks ago and I’m in heaven!

Program: Photoshop CC & Illustrator CC

Camera: Canon 5D

Anything Else: I do doodle in the Adobe Ideas app on my Ipad and definitely kick back at night before nodding off and hunt for colors. I hoard color ideas!

Experiment! I have always experimented over the years as a designer. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it was an utter failure! However, constantly experimenting helped me find “me” in my creative style. I think when you are experimenting in making your own pages, you will take a little of this and a little of that and before long you develop your own unique style and look. Plus, it’s fun!

I adore this kit. It’s so rich and earthy yet so sparkly and beautiful. Flergs and I have been making these themes since January and so far, this one is my favorite yet. I love that I was able to paint several unique pieces for the kit as well.

More Confetti has been very popular since it’s release. It continues to sell week after week. What inspired this kit was a wedding inspiration board and the wedding cake had confetti dots all over it in these same dusty pinks, lavender, and metallic gold. I made a freebie out of the inspiration and loved it so much personally, that I made this full kit in addition to it. I think it appeals to the girly girl side in us. It’s great for birthdays or any page that needs some sparkle and pink!!

Repetition Repetition Repetition

Around here, the end of the school year is in sight and with that comes a lot of activities! There are barbecues, play dates, parties, and end-of-year activities. I am looking forward to some lazy summer days ahead!

With that in mind I decided to scrap a little memory from last summer.

Enjoy Your View

Every year we visit with the kids’ grandparents in the summer. The kids love it and I know they’re making special memories. I try to take as many pictures as I can while we’re there. And then, naturally, I scrapbook them!

Repetition in Design

When my life is busy and I don’t have a lot of time for scrapbooking, I find that giving myself a mini-challenge actually helps me focus on being creative which in turns helps me to unwind. I went through The Daily Digi archives and found this gem about the design principle of repetition.

What a great challenge! I chose to pick one shape and repeat it on my page many times. My favourite shape lately is the half-circle so that’s what I used.

I repeated four rows of half-circles across the page. (I offset the rows slightly.)Then I selected all of the half-circles and arranged them on an angle. I like angled pages because it gives a bit of motion and playfulness to the page.

I clipped paper to each half-circle. I only used a few of the papers available in the kit and repeated them all at least three times. I think that on this page using too many papers would have been a bit chaotic, especially since the design is relying on repetition to make it work.

I added a big photo over top of the repeated half-circles and then a floral cluster for some dimension.

Look back on your completed pages — how do you play with repetition in your designs?

Liquify—Your New Best Friend

I don’t know about you, but I hate pictures of myself! I am my own worst critic. But, with my new baby, and the lack of pictures of me as a child with my mom, I have a new imperative to get in front of the camera.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time I ask my husband to snap a picture when I am feeling absolutely gorgeous, and the resulting still image doesn’t capture my feeling. This is when photoshop comes to the rescue. There is nothing wrong with a little light photoshopping! The photo is supposed to capture the moment- and sometimes a small detail can distract from that.

In the example below, I felt like a peaceful, glowing new mom when my one month old was sleeping soundly on me. I asked my husband to grab the good camera and snap a picture. Unfortunately, my head is at an awkward angle giving me a double chin, I wish my hair looked like I washed it, and my tank top is doing something strange. What I wanted to capture was not captured! So it’s time for some editing.

First the easy stuff: I cropped and converted to black and white. But how do I fix my hair, chin and tank top!?
Simple: nudge it with liquify!

Under the filters menu in Photoshop CS, choose liquify (
in PSE, go to filer >distort>liquefy). You’ll be able to push and nudge parts of your image around!

For a more natural nudge, a larger brush (around 200 is my favorite) and a smaller pressure (around 25) yield the best result.

Liquify is also great for straightening out t-shirts or cloth backgrounds. I’ve used it to fix askew onesies for my daughter.
Have fun making your pictures capture your moments!
