Using a Kit on Several Pages

When I am shopping for digi supplies, it’s usually the colour scheme that first draws me in and makes me take a closer look at a particular kit. I check out the detailed previews and creative team sample pages and try to imagine a few different ways that the kit could be used. I look closely at the patterned papers and the elements, looking for versatility and a mix of theme-specific pieces and good general-use items.

With that in mind, I challenged myself to work with one kit and make several pages with it. I chose to use Amy Wolff’s The Whole Caboodle, which is included in this month’s Digi Files.

I made three pages and tried to make them as different from each other as I could.

Many Papers

I made “Giggles” for the May Playbook. I wanted to show off some of the really cool papers in Amy’s kit. I started with a mat of rectangles and then layered on patterned paper cut into triangles and circles.

Photo Focused

On “You and Me”, I picked a recent favourite photo of my husband and daughter. My husband prefers simple pages so I left the photo very large and added just a couple of embellishments. The photo is the star and the journalling accents it.

Lots of Layers with a Template

Additional supplies: The Circle of Life template by Two Tiny Turtles

For this page, I picked a fun template and just went with it! I made good use of the neat flowers and buttons included in the kit, which I didn’t really use as much on my other pages.

I had a fun time with this challenge! Stretching a kit to make it work on three different pages made me really think about how I could maximize the papers and elements included in the kit.

Layer Masks 101

Today’s post is by team member Toria. We’re so glad she could share her expertise with us today!

What is a layer mask?

A layer mask is a Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements tool that allows you to erase and “unerase” parts of an image. The icon for layer masks is a rectangle with a circle in the middle.

Why should I use it for digi projects?

Because essentially, it’s a non-destructive erasing tool! You can change your mind numerous times about your layout and not have to start over.

How do I use it?

Its simple! Just click the layer mask icon on the layer you want to “erase.” Then, using the brush tool, erase and unerase as you please by toggling back and forth between black and white. Choosing black will erase the image, white will unerase.

In the video below, I want to extract this picture of my daughter. I use the selection tool to quickly grab what I want to keep, then choose layer mask. I then can refine my extraction by using the brush tool.

What can I use it for in my digi projects?

  • Extract images
  • Make a composite of multiple images by layering them on top of each other and using the layer mask to erase the bad parts of the top image.
  • Erase drop shadows on elements, so if you move them you do not have to reshadow.
  • Erase parts of scatters/clusters that cover parts of your layout
  • Mask an adjustment layer to apply the adjustment to only part of your image (colorize a black and white image or brighten only part of it)

Our Story

We’re thrilled to have Amy Wolfe back with us at The Daily Digi! Amy was on my very first creative team back in 2006 and it has been fun to watch her scrapping and designing grow over these past nine years. Amy is an incredibly talented designer and her store is filled with gorgeous colors and edgy patterns. I know you all will be thrilled with her kit, The Whole Caboodle, part of this month’s Digi Files. Let’s take a look!

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of
The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Amy Wolff’s contribution:

You can see more layouts created with this kit on our ”
Team Inspiration” page.

Let’s see, I’ve done this a few times now, so you all know the basics. Here are a couple things you may not know. I am an introvert raising one extrovert and two extreme introverts. We’ve been struggling with anxiety in our family for a few years now. It’s not easy, but with help it’s slowly getting better. I live in a town that is growing leaps and bounds, It’s been fun seeing all the national chains pop up a mile away that we had to travel 4 hours to get to before. There is a part of me that would like to move to the country, raise goats and chickens and garden. I’ve even wondered what it would be like to not have internet. Shudder…nope, that’s one thing I will need to keep!

I’ve been designing so long I can’t really remember what it was like as a beginner. I was a paper scrapper first (I still haven’t gotten rid of my paper stash), then a digi scrapper, then designing just fell into my lap. I love it, it’s a great way to be creative and help support my family.

I’m always looking for new trends, design websites, Target, home decor blogs, etc. A quick glance at Target’s apparel or home decor aisles usually are on point when it comes to what is trendy. Even though I’m trying to stay current, I also love classic everyday prints and elements.

Computer: I have an HP computer with 12 gigs of RAM and an intel i5 processor. I’m running Windows 8 but can’t wait for the next version to come out. I have a really big monitor and if I had room on my desk I would like to try having two.

Program: I’m still using PSCS6 although I saw a deal on the creative cloud and I might upgrade to that soon.

Camera: I have an old Nikon DSLR (10 years old) plus the camera on my iphone5

Anything Else: My little bamboo tablet bit the dust a long time ago. I’m tempted to buy a stylus for my ipad and try playing around with some of the new art apps that are out there. I don’t think it will be too long before a small ipad will have the power to run photoshop. Then maybe I won’t need a computer at all!

Here are two photoshop shortcuts that I’ve found recently (you can teach an old dog new tricks!)

1. If you’re working with multiple layers and you want to view one layer on its own, there’s no need to hide all the others manually, simply hold down Alt and click the Eye icon of a layer to make every other layer invisible. Hold down Alt and click again to reveal them.

2. You probably know that Cmd/Ctrl+Z is Undo, but you may not know Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+Z lets you undo more than one history state.

Usually the last product I finish is my favorite, but going back over the past year, this is definitely my favorite along with the matching papers. The color scheme was part of the September BYOC and I fell in love with them. I love how gender neutral this kit is. It’s just full of little bits and pieces that I had fun putting together.

I started putting together these value packs on my solid papers as a thank you to my customers during National Scrapbook Day. They were so popular I’ve done it for the past 3 years. I pride myself on using lots of different textures in my papers, and when you put together an entire years worth, it’s a spectacular collection of paper.

Happy International Scrapbooking Day!

It’s one of the best days of the year! We have whole day to celebrate this hobby we all love so much. For me, this day is always extra special because it coincides with my digiscrapping anniversary. I am celebrating TEN YEARS of digital scrapbooking. Not only have I created thousands of pages chronicling my family’s memories, but also I have made some amazing friends and have enjoyed knowing them all these years and watching their children grow up. Many of us just had tiny babies back then and now those same kids are PRE-TEENS!

Scrapbooking has changed my life in innumerable ways. I have grown in joy, gratitude, and love for the life and lives around me.

Be sure to check out THIS POST for all sorts of goodies from around our community!

I hope that you all have an amazing day, grab some great deals, and scrap your little hearts out! I know I will!
