I’m so happy that Brook Magee is with us at The Daily Digi this month. I remember when Brook first joined the designer team at Sweet Shoppe Designs. I was blown away by her amazing template. She has such an eye for design and color! I know you’ll just love the templates she created for all of our members!

I’m a 34 year old homemaker, work-at-home designer and homeschooling mama of 2 kids, Ben (8) and Grace (6) and wife of 13 years to the handsome & talented Aaron. Our family also includes a chatty blue parakeet & whoodle puppy. We live in the sunny state of Florida.
My hobbies include scrapbooking (shocker!), making art, cooking/baking, shopping at Target, and drinking coffee. I also like to make people laugh, take walks, paint pottery, shop for fabric with my mom, and sing loudly to music in the car with the windows down.
Several of my templates started with one of my old paper layouts. This is one of them. I created this simple layout in 2009 and re-created it in 2014 for my template pack Trifecta 06 – Oops I Grid it Again. I love the joy I feel when I start with something I made from paper because it’s such a wonderful experience to bring those old layouts back to life in a new way. Digi allows me to scrap without limits, which is a whole new experience from when I scrapped with paper products.
I can use as many papers, and as many embellishments as I desire. Sometimes that freedom makes starting new layouts very overwhelming. I like how my paper layouts inspire me to start from a firm, thought-out, restrained, painstaking process and then I get to cut loose on it digi-style.
Aside from the embellished photo books I made as a child & teen, I officially started the hobby of scrapbooking with a trip to a local store that carried Basic Grey which led to an addiction and eventually a design team spot on a popular online paper scrapping kit club. As digital scrapbooking began to increase in popularity, I tinkered with it a bit using mostly freebies. Having worked in Graphic Design before having my kids, I knew Photoshop well and was thrilled to be using it again. It opened up my eyes to the possibilities of digi! I was hooked.
I took a brief hiatus from scrapbooking and when I came back I was 100% digi. I discovered the Sweet Shoppe and loved their designs. Over the years I became a SugarBabe and started realizing my potential to be a designer. Thankfully, Robin and the other designers at SSD believed in me and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime!
I am inspired by so much! I am in love with color, and lots of it. The outdoors inspires me… fresh air & sunshine. I also absorb vintage & modern children’s illustrations, artists like Mary Blair and Gyo Fujikawa, fabric and quilting patterns.
I’m not sure I could design without listening to music… I like a variety of stuff, but I lean towards music I can sing to. My favorites lately are worship music by Hillsong United, Gungor, and Bellarive mixed with stuff like Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Sia, Lorde, and Justin Timberlake.
Computer: Gosh, I have to be honest I didn’t really know this… I had to Google how to even find this out. LOL. We have a PC that’s running Windows 7, it has about 16.0 GB of RAM and a processor that’s 3.60 GHz. 64-bit operating system. I have dual monitors (one is 24″, the other is 19″) and a black keyboard that is quite clickety and clackety.
Program: I have Adobe CC because my husband is a designer also and keeps us current, but despite that I am still using my old version of Adobe Photoshop CS6 & Illustrator CS6. I should start using the CC programs, but I don’t do well with change!
Camera: We have a Canon Rebel Xti, but I hardly use it. I prefer my small and incredibly powerful mirrorless Sony RX100 camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. Since upgrading my smartphone to a Samsung Galaxy S5, I am also using my cellphone as a camera more often.
Anything Else: I use an Epson Perfection V500 PHOTO flatbed scanner for scanning my doodles and items I want to extract. We have a wacom tablet, but I can’t get used to it so I just use my mouse. For doodling I use Sharpie Pens and Prismacolor colored pencils on white printer paper.
Here’s one tip I feel like I constantly have to remember: PUSH THROUGH. When I get scrappers block it’s tempting to delete the layout, start over or stop scrapping all together. But, I now believe the very best thing to do is just push through and quickly finish the doggone layout. Call it done. Good enough. And move on! There’s nothing that irks me more than seeing all the half-finished .PSDs of layouts I gave up on in my folders. My new ‘thing’ is to work hard to finish every layout I start. Just get it scrapped! That way, the memory is recorded and I can print the page. Once it’s finished the irritation over shadows or embellishing, or whatever was bothering me is forgotten. All too often, I get caught up in perfectionism and allow myself to be overly critical of the process. It’s really all about the memories in the photos!
My favorite product is A Little Gypsy, a solo kit I made at the request of my CT member, Alina. I am a bit of a free spirit myself, so this inspiration and carefree color palette was a blast to create with. I went a little crazy with the doodles and flowers. I really love how it turned out, especially when I see layouts people make with it!
This set of templates is one of my best-sellers. It stems from my love of family and seeing everyone’s pretty faces and special names all lined up together. There’s just something about a Family Tree that appeals to me, and I think every good scrapbooker should have one in their albums. This set is special to me because of my big, detailed 12×12 inch tree illustration which gives it a special handmade quality.
