Thank You to Our May Designers!

Another month has come and gone and once again I find myself so grateful for the talent and creativity in this digi community! The designers who allow us to show off their incredible designs are the only reason we can continue to bring you new and exciting content each and every day. Without their contributions, the site couldn’t run. It has always been our hope that YOU — our readers and members — would have the chance to be exposed to the best of the best each month. The designers who partner with us are just that!

Scrapping with this month’s
DIGI FILES was such a blessing. I have SIX new pages because of the time and talent of some amazing designers.

Name

Vicki Stegall is the proud owner of Oscraps.com. Vicki opened Oscraps 9 years ago when she made the transition from a traditional paper scrapbooking to digi scrapping. While Vicki is and always will be a designer at heart, the responsibilities of running a major digi site don’t leave her as much time for designing as she’d like. She’s a born and bred ‘Okie’ living in Moore, Oklahoma and really does say, “y’all” all.the.time. She lives with her IT hubby, Anthony and her 15 year old son, Alyx, who is also her primary scrap subject. Someone recently described her design style as Vintage Grunge and she thinks that suits her just fine.

STOREFACEBOOK

layout

I did this layout for a designer spotlight challenge at Oscraps. The challenge was to go wild and pile stuff on a page. I did struggle with this and ended up piling it on but still keeping it clean and simple. What I loved about this was how the challenge and the act of being free with it all ended up inspiring my journaling.

started

I got started paper scrapbooking when my son was born. Before I became a stay at home mom I was very career oriented and didn’t really know what to do with myself at home. One of the ladies from our childbirth class ended up living less than a mile from us and she invited me over for a scrapbooking party. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into but went anyway. Wow, am I glad I did! We started spending most every day together scrapping and crafting while our munchkins played together. One day she called me up and asked if I’d ever heard of digital scrapbooking. I never had, but as she put it, I was better at computers than her so could I check into it. From that day on, I was hooked! At that time, there just wasn’t very much out there. So, I started making my own designs, then sharing them and eventually opened the shop at Oscraps.

inspired

Anything and everything! I really enjoy “found objects” and that’s frequently what I start with. The kits just evolve from that. Being the owner of a large shop, I tend to get caught up in the actual running of the shop – background site issues, customer service, etc. so I don’t have as much time for designing (and/or scrapping), so deadlines and commitments continue to be my biggest inspiration at the moment. That’s one of the things I love most about the 52 Inspirations subscription. It keeps me designing twice (or more) a month!

tools

Computer: Macbook Pro laptop, dual monitors and a cintiq graphics tablet.

Program: Photoshop CS6

Camera: Everyday camera – my iPhone 4s My “good” camera (which I don’t know how to use very well) – Canon EOS 5D

Anything Else: iPad 2, Kindle 1 & 2, and Nook Color (I like gadgets). My favorite is my Kindle. I use it to listen to my books via the “text-to-speech” feature. It takes some getting used to, but I love listening to books while I do extractions and laundry 🙂

tipstricks

To check out the different effects of blend modes quickly and easily, hold down the shift key and press the + or – keys to cycle through the different layer blend modes. This works best with the “move” tool as your active tool – if your active tool is a brush or similar, this won’t work because it will cycle through the blend modes of the active tool rather than in the layers palette.

favorite

I loved everything about this bundle – the soothing colors, the creative outlet of the mixed media papers, the traditional touches and experimenting with something relatively new to me – full size page blend masks.

52 Inspirations is a yearly subscription project that I do with Sue Cummings. We’ve been doing it since 2008 and we have members who have been with us since day one. Sue or I release a mini kit or element/paper pack each week for a year. It’s continually changing and continues to inspire me every week even after all these years. And, it’s a ridiculously great deal for our customers!

When Inspiration Strikes

When Inspiration Strikes

Inspiration is all around us! The important thing to do is to write down the ideas when they arrive so that they aren’t lost.

Here are nine easy ways that you can capture your ideas so that you can scrap more:

1. Write It In a Notebook

A physical notebook, especially one small enough to fit in your purse, is the easiest and most low-tech solution for saving ideas. Just pull it out and write everything down.

2. Keep a File

You can open a text or Word file on your computer and save your ideas locally.

3. Save It In On Your Smartphone

There are so many apps that you can use to capture your notes. You could use something as simple as the native notes app on your phone. Voice memos are another option.

Notes

4. Be an Evernoter

Steph wrote about using Evernote to organize her notes and ideas. It’s a great web-based tool for saving ideas and has a smartphone app that make it a great solution for at home and on the go.

5. Save it to Google Drive

I use Google Drive to keep a running list of ideas to scrap.

My husband and I also share a few files where we both jot down thoughts about the kids and conversations that we’ve had with them. It’s a resource I’ve used many times to create scrapbook pages.

6. Add Notes to Pictures

I save my photos in Lightroom and add notes to the metadata. Then, when I go to scrapbook the photos, some of the journaling is already done and easy to copy and paste into my layout.

If you’re a Flickr user or use Facebook albums, you can also add notes to each photo online.

7. Pinterest

If you’re inspired by another person’s idea or a great tutorial, pin it on Pinterest. I have pinboards for inspiring layouts, tutorials, journaling ideas, Photoshop tricks, and so much more. It’s a fantastic resource.

8. Use Social Media

I use Facebook to share cute things that my kids say and some of our family activities. I set up distribution lists so that I share these memories with a limited number of family and really close friends, rather than with acquaintances. I reference my posts all the time when I’m making layouts.

9. Collect App

The Collect App lets you save photos and notes about events in your life that you might want to scrapbook. It also makes a nice photo calendar for the month so that you can see your days at a glance.

I’m hoping to scrap more layouts this year than last and my newest project, Scrap With Me, is one way I’m keeping myself accountable to that! I made this layout and recorded my process in a screencast. I’m hoping to explore different techniques, methods and sources of inspiration and share them throughout 2015.

started

I’m a graphic designer by trade, and stumbled across this amazing hobby in 2006. I’ve been digi scrapping ever since! This year, I celebrated 8 years of creating templates, tools, actions and classes for my fellow digi scrappers. I’m passionate about automating repetitive tasks and helping others improve their Photoshop and Lightroom skills so they can capture, record and share their memories. I’m also a huge fan of photobooks and getting pages printed, and a big advocate of backing up your files, photos and layouts especially!

inspired

I love to make the most of the time I have. So much of what you find in my store is designed to help automate or speed up repetitive tasks, freeing you up to do more of what you love and less of the busy work. Whenever I find myself doing the same thing twice, I ask myself how I can automate it or improve the process. I also love helping people, so I enjoy the challenge of a customer request, teaching, and mentoring.

Program: Creative Cloud 2014 (Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat); Photoshop Elements 13; Screenflow 5

Camera: Canon T1i, iPhone 6 and Canon ELPH

Anything Else: Canon Selphy 910

tipstricks

Take the time to sign up for email newsletters from your favorite designers. Most designers offer some kind of extra freebies, discounts or exclusive specials to their loyal fans. If you’re a designer and do not have a regular newsletter, set one up so your fans have another way to stay in touch with you.

Commemorating Memorial Day

For those of us who are Americans, Memorial Day is a day we commemorate those who have lost their lives as they have fought for our freedom. Although we throw around, “Happy Memorial Day!” while we plan for our barbecues and celebrate the three-day weekend, the day is a day to remember the liberty we have is because of those who relinquished theirs. Many men and women have voluntarily put themselves in harm’s way in order that we might be able to continue to enjoy our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As we remember those who have fallen for us, let us strive to honor their sacrifice by creating, enjoying, and remembering a life worth living.
