Technique Talk

Hello! This is my first post of 2015 and I am so excited to start another year of memory keeping!

It’s no secret that I love revisiting baby photos and scrapbooking them. Some of them I’ve scrapbooked before, but that’s okay. I like spending time with these cute pictures!

I found a sweet picture of my son when he was a baby. I scrapped the entire page using the black and white image before deciding that I like the colour version better. That’s the beauty of digital though – it was super easy to swap out and re-save the completed layout.

Forever My Baby

Black and white:

I started making the page with a neutral background to let the design take centre stage. I love how the paper included some paint along the edges for interest.

I added my journaling and title using the Claire Hand font. By blending the font, it allows the texture of the paper to show though. (See the tutorial on Fonts Don’t Float for more on this technique.) I also added staples to hold down the ribbon strip.

I placed a paper strip, some paint dots and a paper element to the bottom edge of the page to ground the design. I added some red washi tape to add more red to the bottom part of the page which links it to the top part of the design.

I tried to use the placement of the red elements to help to establish the flow of the page:

For this page, I worked with Blagovesta’s beautiful Captured kit which was included in the Digi Files #69 and is now available at her store.

I’m so happy with how the page came out and that I was able to scrap this little memory for my son.

Photos in a Series

I like to tell stories with my photos. Although I use a lot of words on my scrapbook pages, I also like to let the photos have their turn to speak. Oftentimes, this is done much easier by using a series of photos rather than just one.

Take these photos for example. I was at a friends house, photographing her newborn, and this sweet girl did not want to sleep. It probably didn’t help that there were 13 other kids in the house making noise and watching the action. The baby was so tired. She had been awake for hours but every time she started to dose, a noise would startle her. I finally asked her mom to hold her and rock her. After a while, the sweet baby couldn’t hold out any more and she succumbed to the sleep she so desperately needed.

These photos were shot over a period of thirty minutes, but they tell a story. Can’t you just see the bewildered and overwhelmed look on the baby’s face in the first photo (and her big sister needing the mama she has had to herself for the past four years)? Then the baby shows just how tired she is. Finally, sleep takes over.

I love it. I love how three photos, placed next to each other, tell a story. Her mom could look at these photos years later and completely remember what was going on. If I had just shot the one of the her sleeping, that wouldn’t be the case.

When you shoot, think about the story you want to tell. And when you create your scrapbook pages, think again about the story. Instead of just using one photo, see how you can place photos together and let the pictures say things so the words don’t have to.

Hodge Podge

Welcome back Etc by Danyale. We’re so thrilled to have this amazing designer back with us at The Daily Digi. I am not sure I have ever seen a designer with more exquisite detail in her patterned papers. Seriously…this stuff is swoon-worthy! One of the things I love about her kits is that because of the detail and variety, they can be used over and over (and over!) Her color choices are beautiful and when I saw this month’s contribution to The Digi Files, I couldn’t wait to bust it open and start scrapping. Let’s take a look at her gorgeous kit, “Hode Podge.”

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of
The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Etc by Danyale’s contribution:

I live along the beautiful Gulf Coast in the Pensacola Beach area with my firefighter husband of 19 years. We have 3 kids (two boys – 29 and 32, and a girl who is 18) and one very silly granddaughter. I live a blessed and loved life in this cozy beach side town and have managed to take my love for memory keeping from a hobby after long days in the ER/Dispatch to a second “career”. Laughter has sustained us through two cancer battles and our love for keeping it real no matter if you are a stranger or long time friend is a family motto. You can find me taking a long lunch in my hammock most days that I am not in a beach chair.

Our son is an Electrical Engineering Major at the University of Alabama. Going from his 2nd year to the 3rd transitional pre-career year, he needed a change to a “real” apartment from the college studio life. This move came with the realization that he is probably in his forever home as we fell in love with this perfect loft overlooking the riverfront area. His time on campus means more to him now, and loving the area is a big part to the change in his life. Journaling is hard for most people/scrappers, but I think it is what really defines memory keeping from creative scrapping. When you sort all those little photos out in a page, it is easy to just journal a note about each one so you never forget what they were about. Not every page needs journaling, but I love to include many pages highlighting moments in our albums.

I started paper scrapping in high school. Those first albums are long gone in a shed fire, but I remember them fondly. When I received a 2nd cancer diagnosis many years ago, I set out to get all those memories into paper albums in case I was not as lucky in treatment that time (I was thankfully). Digi seemed such a great way for me to add in a special tough to my pages when I could find products quick enough in the paper market. I could purchase, print, cut and glue. I was good to go, and created over 30 albums that first year. The kids still pull these out every holiday and giggle like it was yesterday. They find new things in those pages every time. Recently, they found lots of journaled letters I slipped behind some of the pages. Last Thanksgiving was a tear-jerker!
The design process came rather innocently. I did some word art/alpha add-ons for a fellow friend and designer while on her creative team. I was dared by a different designer in the same store to make a mini kit right after opening my own “Etc” store. I was only making add-ons, bits and pieces. I did not even know how to make a paper, but I sat down…then that was it. Now I am still here almost 5 years later!

Everything. The list is probably shorter of what doesn’t inspire me, LOL! A commercial, photo, song, a moment with my kids, you name it. It comes to me sometimes at the most random moments, and I have to jot it down real quick. I do the same thing to keep notes on things my kids/husband may say so I can scrap them. I am guilty of “dream-designing” and have woke up started on a new kit, revised one in progress or scrapped one completely! I have pieces of paper with sketches and notes on the back of napkins and power bill envelopes.

Computer: Old school all the way with my desktop HP Pavilion 2TB Intel Windows 7 w/27 inch monitor. I have about 3/4 of my extra 2TB filled

Program: I primarily use PSE 10 and my Wacom tablet, but dip into CS6 and Illustrator some here and there.

Camera: I use my camera phone more and more since I love to Instagram and this keeps it simple. I do own a Nikon CoolPic P500 that I pull out often enough to kill some batteries. I am on my 3rd set – my husband can’t seem to understand!

Anything Else: I do use my Wacom tablet on a daily basis, even if it is just for a bit or adjustment with something I am creating. I love the ease of that little pen tip to get the details while drawing.

I have always said this and it still has not changed. think if you are memory keeping for the sake of sharing with future generations, then you need to treat your pages as a piece of you life’s memory. Journal, add the date, the people in the photo, the event, everything that makes that photo special. You chose it and that memory, tell it in the honor it deserves.

Upside of Down will probably always be my favorite product as it was co-created with my daughter. This was during a very rough time in her life, and a touches on a subject that many can relate too. The creative process gave her some wings to express herself through the “upside” of depression and counseling by sharing ideas. We really enjoyed laughing through the tears some days when she would have good or bad moments and we would both say “put it in the kit”.

Prior to 2014, my favorite product and most popular would have been one in the same. When I was creating Shabby Boho, I knew that it was going to resonate with many scrappers as it just has a bit of everything for anyone sharing my love for the shabby gypsy style of current trends. It brings back a touch of the 70’s that I grew up in, but with a modern touch of colors. Mixing that old with the bold is style I think that most would say is definitely me, aka Etc.

Inspiration for Your Week

For the month of January, our UnDigi posts will be quotes. I love to get people thinking, I love introspection. I think that as memory keepers we do a disservice to ourselves if we leave out massive parts of our life stories. What we think and feel are just as important as the happy Christmas pictures and the exotic vacation photos.

As you start your week, think on the words above for a while and ask yourself some questions:

  • What have been the greatest influences on your character?
  • How has suffering in your life strengthened you?
  • Have you experience success in areas that you know would have failed had you not persevered?
  • Knowing that often good things come through trials and suffering, how does it change your perspective on personal hurt or hurt on the part of your kids, friends, or family members?
  • If someone like Hellen Keller could see all the good that comes from adversity, what can you see that comes from your own?

Phonebooking 2015 – Mobile Memory Keeping

Just over a month ago, I challenged myself to complete a December Daily by creating layouts on my phone. I asked our readers to join in with me and it really was a “DecemberSuccess”!

We’ve had almost 700 layouts posted using the #DecemberSuccess tag on Instagram:

I’ve found over the past few days after Christmas, that I’ve missed creating these pages. So, I decided I wanted to continue and try and do one layout each day during 2015.

I decided on using the tags #MobileMemoryKeeping and #Phonebooking2015 and would LOVE to have you join me again!

Kami from Ziggle Designs has agreed to create dated journaling cards for each day of 2015:

You can download the verticle cards here and the horizontal here.

I learned so much about different apps and processes from our readers that participated! I learned from @shannonkay that I can add digital elements to a paper and create my own journaling cards using Photoshop Touch. I can even drop shadow the elements!

@nana_vg creates her layouts using the Project Life App and then exports them without journaling. She will then open them in Photoshop on her computer to add journaling (so she has more font choices), and add some digital embelishments.

I also learned from @shannonkay that you can add a video to a photo or journaling spot using the Diptic Video app.

I probably won’t post every single day on Instagram, but there will be some and you can search on the #Photobooking2015 and #MobileMemoryKeeping tags to find more ideas, tips, and inspiration from our participants.

I will be posting here each month with download links for the journaling cards and including some app suggestions, ideas, and tips!
