I love the detail she puts into her elements design and variety — it makes scrapping so much easier! When I first saw Sherrie’s kit for The Digi Files, I was ready to break open Photoshop and get started. Let’s take a closer look at “Life Unfiltered.”

Name

Hi! My name is Sherrie. I’ve been married to my wonderfully supportive husband, Scott, for 13 years and together we have 2 amazing children ages 13 & 14 and I’m fortunate to be step-mom to Scott’s handsome 19-year-old son, as well. We have no shortage of furry faces in our house, as we all play human servants to our dog Ajax and our 4 cats, Jasmine, Stash, Leanan and Isis.

layout

I originally scrapped this layout to include as an example layout on a product page and it quickly became one of my favorite layouts. I took the photo years ago when we were on vacation, and I was lagging behind messing with something in my bag. I looked up and saw these three engaged in conversation and the moment just struck me as beautiful. I love that I was able to grab my camera and snap this shot without them noticing. The “fly on the wall” photos are always my favorites. So, when I scrapped this, it brought that feeling right back again. I think that’s one of the most gratifying parts of being a scrapper.

started

I started paper scrapping back in early 2000. It took me a few years, but I moved to digital in 2005 when I had two toddlers who loved to get into everything and no dedicated scrap space. By late 2005, I was experimenting with creating my own digital supplies and I was selling in my first shop by early 2006. When I realize that I’ve been designing for over 8 years, it kind of blows my mind. It certainly doesn’t seem like it’s been that long!

inspired

So many things inspire me, but nothing really gets my creativity going like a beautiful combination of colors or the essence of a theme.

tools

Computer: I use Windows 7 desktop (I’m anxiously awaiting Windows 10) with a 1 TB hard drive, 16 GB of RAM and dual monitors.

Program: Photoshop CC 2014 and Illustrator CC 2014

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel Model XSi & Nokia 928

Anything Else: Wacom Cintiq

tipstricks

Becoming comfortable with my own scrap style has been a very powerful thing for me. We all seem to develop a type or style and I encourage everyone to embrace that and become comfortable in their own “scrap skin.” Trying out new styles and techniques are great ways to grow creativity and skills, but it should never lead to comparing layouts or style to other scrappers in a way that is negative. Spread your wings because learning or trying something new makes you happy, not because you think you need to scrap a certain way. The fingerprint of your own unique style is part of what makes your layouts so special.

I really love the warm, homey feel of this kit…and I’m a sucker for anything that has anything to do with autumn. I’d had the color palette in my idea file for a long time, and really enjoyed creating with it.

.I have all those Disney lovers out there to thank for making this product so popular. Several scrapping friends who are regular Disneyworld and Disneyland vacationers inspired it, and the colors were chosen because they felt so “classically Disney.” I think everyone loves a good Disney kit.

I am a huge believer in journaling on your layouts and of scrap therapy. This layout was created for a journal challenge I was hosting about the happy and sad times of our lives. I love it because it details in words and images the personal journey I have made from the sadness of losing my husband to my current state of happiness. Even though I shed a few tears while creating it, I loved working with my own products to tell my story. This layout is a complete expression of who I am. I encourage everyone to do more layouts about themselves and their stroy, not only for the therapeutic benefits, but for your children and grandchildren. Sharing your story with them is one of the most precious gift you will give them.

started

I’ve always been a record keeper, but I didn’t start scrapping in the true sense until after my first trip to Disney in 2001. Even though I was an adult and a mom, the magic of that trip was something I wanted to capture forever. That started me on a serious scrapping habit and my son has the albums to prove it.

In 2007 a genealogy friend of mine showed me a digital layout. I knew as soon as I saw it that I was going to learn how to do that type of scrapping myself. I tend to jump into every creative thing I do with both feet, so the first thing I did was buy a graphics program and the second thing I did was to start a website with two friends on MyFamily.com for other genealogists who wanted to learn to scrap their family story. I really didn’t know what I was doing, but I am good at organizing and planning, so we were all able to learn together. Early on, I put a challenge system in place for the ladies and needed prizes to give them, so I started creating little freebies. Before long I was creating full kits. I loved doing it and wanted to try my hand at it in a larger sense, but was too scared to put myself out there.

In 2011 one of my partners on the site gave me a blog for Christmas and pushed me out of our safe little nest, telling me to go chase my dream. It was the best gift I ever received

inspired

I have always been crafty. Even as a small child, I would recreate things that I saw in a book or magazine. Honestly, I have to do something creative every day to be happy. It’s just who I am.

My biggest source of design inspiration is words. I love words, poems, quotes, lyrics, titles and all it take is one little word to get my creativity flowing.

tools

Computer: I do most of my design work on my Dell Inspiron 560 with Windows 7. I have 6 GB of RAM and one big ol’ monitor. I also have a laptop that I hardly ever use as I don’t feel like I am seeing all my colors correctly with it.

Program: I started off scrapping and designing in Paint Shop Pro and I still go back to it for some things, but I mainly design in Photoshop CS5. I’ve only been using Photoshop for a little over a year now and still have a ton of things to learn, but I love it.

Camera: Did I mention I was a horrible photographer? I have a little pink Kodak Easy Share M341 that I carry in my purse every where I go, yet I usually forget to take any photos. I think that’s probably why I think journaling is so important.

Anything Else: Not at this time, but I do have a Waccom Tablet in my cart at Amazon.

tipstricks

It embarrasses me to say it, but I don’t have that many tips or tricks to share. I am a horrible photographer, I am not naturally gifted at anything and I tend to do everything the hard way. Honestly, it is a good thing that I am not easily discouraged or I would never have gotten anywhere in life. So I guess my only trick is sticking with things. I’m always telling my son that no one starts off being good at anything. It takes time, dedication and hard work to be good at something, but if it that something makes you happy, then it is worth every minute you spend getting good at it.

favorite

I love my Positively Kit for a number of reasons. First, the colors were originally chosen for a group project and I really didn’t like them so I didn’t do anything but the word art for the group. However, I loved the word art and was determined to build a kit around it, so I stepped out of my comfort zone and went for it. Since I am a total control freak, stepping outside my box was both frightening and liberating. Those feelings, combined with the uplifting message of the kit, made the entire creative process so much fun for me. Usually I am full of angst worrying about every detail of a kit, but with Positively, I just felt good.

DesFav

popular

So Long Summer has been my most popular product to date. It was inspired by those end of summer days where things are starting to cool and slow down. The colors are traditional autumn tones that never get old. I don’t have nearly the word art in this kit that I normally do which worried me because I get the most compliments for my word art, but it has sunflowers and I think everyone loves sunflowers.

How Many, How Much

Another quote to get your week started.

I don’t know about you, but I know I LOVED Shel Silverstein as a kid. And even at age 37, I still love his poems. My favorite line in this one is,

How much good inside a day?

Depends how good you live ’em.

As we start a new weeks, let’s agree to live ’em good. Let’s slow down and be present. Let’s enjoy our TODAY rather than regret yesterday or worry about tomorrow. Today is what we have right now. Embrace it. Live it. Capture it. Remember it.

From October thru December is my most FAVORITE time of year. The weather the holidays and ahhhhhhhhhh the baking!! Cooking is NOT my favorite but baking and sweets?! I can NOT live without. I decided to create some adorable little cooks/bakers. I absolutely LOVE the way they’ve turned out!

started

I have been scrapbooking pretty much since my freshman year of college. My roommate’s aunt owned a major stamping company based out of Kanab, Utah which was just a short distance from where we lived and were going to school. I’ve always loved to take pictures so adding stamps to my sorry scrapbooks really spruced them up quite a bit. I stuck to paper or traditional scrapbooks for a very long while. I refused to even use a digital camera until 2005 when my 4th and last child was a year old. Soon after I created my first digital page. It took over 8 hours. I swore I’d never do THAT again!! But it was too late, I was hooked. So after 21 traditional albums and 15 years of paper scrapbooking I went completely digital. 2 years later I started designing my own products.

inspired

In college I studied Early Child Development. My preschool students and my own children have always been my inspiration. I love bright colors, simple shapes and storybook creatures. Looking through my store you will notice a nursery rhyme trend in my designs.

tools

Computer: My husband is my tech guy. He keeps me up and running top notch. He just updated my computer to make things run a lot faster. Don’t ask me what though, because I have NO idea. Something about a Solid State Drive and extra RAM. For at least 5 years I have been creating on dual screens. I use PC with the most recent PSCS. Learning new things is hard for me or I am just lazy. So I just keep doing my thin and

Program: The most recent Photo Shop Creative Suites.

Camera: I just bought a new camera. I’m a canon girl and updated from the 30D to the 70D. I haven’t found a lens that I absolutely love just yet so I’m still using my trusty 50mm 1.8 that never fails me.

Anything Else: No tablet, no fancy gadgets. Just very tiny fiskar scissors, Strathmore 140lb. Watercolor paper and every color of acryilc paint imaginable.

tipstricks

I have been designing for a little over 7 years. There really isn’t much that has changed in my routine. I always start with doodling my designs in a sketch book, selecting paints and painting on watercolor paper. Then hours and hours sitting on the floor cutting pieces out and gluing them together. Scanning and extracting. However, about 2 years ago a designer friend introduced me to the Pen Tool in Photo Shop…. LIFE CHANGING!!!!

favorite

My favorite product changes month to month. Pretty much every time I try a new paint or water color technique or remember about a new favorite fairy tale or nursery rhyme. However, I just started creating a series of Art Journal type papers. The set I created for the November BYOC pretty much rocks my socks off.

DesFav

popular

My most popular product changes along with my style and paper pieces released. This time of year for at least the last 3 years Jesse Tree is my most popular product. I love this for many reasons. This product is a type of build your own ornament set. Families, TOGETHER, can create the ornaments then every night through the month of December can spend that time reading scriptures and reflecting on the Life of Jesus Christ. It is inspiring to see so many families with a strong desire to keep their holidays, their scrapbooks and their memories meaningful. That’s why I love my job.
