I love Bella Gypsy Designs and I’m so happy to have the sister duo back in The Digi Files this month! Lena and Tabatha are talented designers and work so well together. I had so much fun visiting with Lena again for the Digest! We covered some new fun things as she shared some of the things that have changed in their design process over the past year as well as some new fun tools and techniques they are using. Bella Gypsy Designs is Lena Gardner and Tabatha Reed. They are sisters and best friends, but for the last 8 1/2 years they’ve been business partners as well.Lena lives in Lexington, KY, and Tabatha lives in a small town an hour away. Lena is married and has 3 kids, aged 14, 7, and 6. Tabatha is engaged and has 6 kids, aged 11, 10, 6, 3, 20 months and 3 months. Aside from family cookouts and holiday engagements, they have 9 birthday parties to throw every year and a fun Halloween party tradition, so even without much effort, they get to see each other often!
The thing I love the most about this layout is that I’m in it. I know my kids will really appreciate pictures and layouts with me when they’re older. As for the aesthetic of the page, I just really love damask and any excuse to use it! I’m not a “solid colored background” kind of scrapper!

Tabatha started designing before Lena did, but just barely–she had been scrapping for a few months and began tinkering and designing about 2 months before Bella Gypsy was born. She was still a brand new designer when Lena got interested as well and they worked together to create a brand for the both of them to love and create with. Lena learned to design by watching Tabatha, and it was actually a few months before she ever created her first layout.
They are inspired by color and pattern! When you are a graphic designer, you can’t just turn your design eye off. They are constantly seeing color and pattern everywhere, texting each other pictures of neat patterns or colors and the like.
Computer: Tab is working on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, with 1/2 a terabyte HD and 6 gigs of RAM, and Lena’s working on an HP desktop with a 1TBHD and 8 gigs of RAM.
Program: They both use Adobe Creative Cloud and design in Photoshop and Illustrator.
Camera: They have the same type of camera and primary lens–Canon Rebel T2 with 50 mm 1.4 lens, but Tabatha also uses a 35mm lens sometimes so she can catch her larger group of kids in the shot!
Anything Else: Lena uses a Wacom Intuos tablet. After years of being a tablet snubber, she’s a total convert.
If you use Photoshop, check your version for a “beep when done” setting! In Creative Cloud, it’s Edit>Preferences>General>toggle Beep When Done. This is an efficiency life-saver for me. Sometimes when I’m cutting an alpha or converting .CR2 files or doing anything that takes a long time, I want to navigate away to check email, etc. Doing so gets you sucked into a procrastination vortex easily, so when your computer beeps at you indicating the task is complete, it’s a nice reminder to get back to work! This is my favorite because I love any chance to infuse our humor into our kits. Being able to use a cheesy quote from decades ago really made my week when I was designing this collection. Plus, I really like cool tones for boy kits, so I was pleased with this overall!
This was one of our most popular products last summer. I know not everyone goes camping or has a camper, but people seemed to like it. I enjoyed making it because the illustrations were fun & challenging. Typically I’m not a huge fan of smaller kits (this is a mini-kit size for us), but this one was fun to design and scrap with!
