A big WELCOME to Wendy of WendyBird Designs! I’m so happy to have her joining us in The Digi Files this month! Wendy’s hybrid templates are so mind blowing to me! Hi! My name is Wendy and I live in sunny Arizona with my boyfriend of 5 years. Depending on the day/week/month, we’ll have any combination of our 4 kids with us. My son is 15 and his kids are 16, 18 and 21. We also have gorgeous cat named Mary who is queen of the castle.
When I’m not designing or paper crafting, I’m usually crocheting, reading or out playing with our RC cars.
I do work full time as well and as if I needed something else to do, we recently started another business making and selling RC parts!
I love this box because it’s a fun twist on a mini album. I don’t do nearly as much memory keeping as I should – it often feels overwhelming to me. I was really inspired by Ziggle Scraps’ The List kit, and this box happens to have 13 panels, so it was perfect for making a Top 13 of 2013! Rather than getting stuck with lots of journaling (which I’ve always struggled with), I can document the year with bullet points!
A few examples of my favorites of 2013 are a road trip we took to Denver, him surprising with tickets to the Ballet for Valentine’s Day and my son’s first high school Marching Band performances.
I started scrapbooking about 15 years ago when my son was a baby, but quit when he was a toddler because I didn’t have enough time, space or money to keep up with it… and I still didn’t even have one album done! I found digital scrapbooking in 2008 and in 2009 discovered hybrid crafting which became the perfect blend – I adore everything about digi and I can still get my hands-on crafting time! In 2010, I started creating and selling hybrid templates. I joined Scrap Orchard in June 2012 and am so honored to be working with this group of amazing women!
Boxes are my favorite thing to create – it’s amazing how many configurations can come out of a single sheet of paper! I am often inspired by product packaging so I am often deconstructing things to see how I can recreate them out of paper! And as I play with other crafts, I think about ways to create coordinating hybrid templates for gifting them.
Computer: I have a Toshiba 27″ All In One Touch Screen that I love! I run Windows 8.1, have a 2TB hard drive and 16gb RAM.
Program: I subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud, so I’m using Photoshop CC and I am learning Illustrator CC. I also use Silhouette Studio Designer Edition.
Camera: Nikon D5000 that I mostly use on Auto…
Anything Else: My Silhouette Cameo is my constant crafting companion!
For those who are new to hybrid – Don’t be afraid! If you can use a layout template, you can use a hybrid template! With hybrid templates, all you’re doing is clipping paper to layer masks just like you would on a page template, then you flatten and print.
And just like when you first started digi scrapping, freebies are a great place to get your feet wet. I host a monthly hybrid challenge at Scrap Orchard that has a free template every month!
For more seasoned hybrid artists – my tip is to add layers and 3 dimensional elements. Something as simple as a real button in place of a digital one can take your project to the next level!
My favorite template is the Magic Box. It’s a little more complex than most of my templates, but it’s still very easy to put together and creates an incredible result! This box opens up to reveal 3 hidden trays to hold treats or organize your desk supplies.
My most popular template is the Phone Stand. It is sized to fit just about any smart phone or mp3 player and gives you place to prop your gadget in landscape mode for watching videos hands free, or use it to hold a photo on your desk or a recipe card in the kitchen.
