Using Your Digi Supplies for Birthday Celebrations

Birthdays are the name of the game…for a while, at least. The Daily Digi is celebrating its birthday all month long and our family is getting ready to head into BIRTHDAY SEASON. We celebrate eight birthdays between January 30 and May 1, with SEVEN of those being in an EIGHT WEEK period! Phew! That’s a lot of birthdays! I’ve talked about scrapping and taking photos on birthdays, but today I want to turn our attention to using our digi supplies to help us celebrate!

From the very beginning of my experience with digital scrapbooking, I have loved to use my digi supplies to help with our celebrations. From my photos cakes in 2006 and 2007 to a birthday t-shirt for my five year old in 2013, my digi supplies have always helped us make our celebrations FUN!

There are so many fun ways to use our digital scrapbooking skills and supplies to help celebrate the lives of those we love. Here are just a few ideas for you(and if you have more, I would love to hear them because like I said, we have a lot of birthdays coming up!)

INVITATIONS

You can make a graphic one like this

Or a hybrid one like this.

A quick search on Pinterest will give you lots of ideas!

(CUP)CAKES & CAKE TOPPERS

I already showed you the cakes I made for my sons’ birthdays many years ago and it’s still a great option. Just look for a place that will do photo cakes and give them your flattened .jpeg file for a perfect customized cake.

Cupcake and cake toppers are super easy to make and the abundant supply of digi materials, they are quick and fun too. Just look at these inspiring ideas from Etsy! Images are linked to original sources.

BIRTHDAY BANNERS

Nothing says fun like a specially created birthday banner!

To make it easy, you could use a ready made template set like this one at Sweet Shoppe Designs. Heather also sells templates for treat wrappers, treat bags, and hats & blowers.

PARTY PROPS and DECORATIONS

Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to props and decorations for parties. Check out these fun ideas!

FAVORS

Saying “thank you” to your guests in the form of small gifts and favors is a great way to use your stash.

I’d love to hear how you have used your digi supplies to celebrate!

Scrapping Great Quotes

My little girl Katie is hilarious. Seriously. The stuff that comes out of her mouth just leaves me speechless. I keep a running log of her quotes on Facebook, much to the delight of friends and family. Here are a few of her beauties:

Katie’s quote for the day: “If we had as many kids as the Duggars, I know what I would do! When it was Halloween and the kids came the door and said, ‘Trick or Treat!’ I would just give them one of the kids!”

During homeschool today: “I’m just a little girl! How am I supposed to know if ‘sun’ starts with a Sssss sound!”

A Katie quote for you (in her “when I was a mom” series): “When I was a mom, all of us wrestled (except the babies!) and I just banged them all down! And sometimes the daddy would help!”

KATIE: “Mama, can you put my hair up in two things?”
ME: “You mean pigtails?”
KATIE: “Yea, pigtails. Except when I was a mom my kids called them bird frogs.”

KATIE (at dinner last night): “Please more everything…except pasta and bread.”
ME: “So you just want more water?”
KATIE: “Yep.”

So it’s 9:20 am and we are driving in the car. Katie asks why we are going home. I tell her, “Because we need to go home.” She then asks, “Is it night-night time?” “No honey, it’s still morning.” {Huge sigh from Katie} “Phew! That was a close one!”

You can see what I mean! The girl just cracks us up. For a long time I have been wanting to do something with all of her quotes. I’ve scrapped a few of them, such as

However, I knew that I didn’t have time to scrap all of them in the traditional way. I really wanted to find a simple way to get them altogether so that they could be printed in a book.

I decided to make myself a template that I can use for all of her quotes. When I write down a new one, I can easily drop it into the template, grab a recent photo, grab a few simple papers from one of my favorite kits, and be done.

It’s been so easy!

Here are a few pages I have put together (these are 16×8 two-page spreads)

The process was so smooth that I decided to get started on another project I have been dreaming of for years. A friend of our family posts a new quote on Facebook every day. They are always the bright spot in my morning. I have been wanting to gather some of my favorites and make a book for her. So, I took the template, got rid of the photo spot, and started gathering some of her recent posts from her Facebook page. It will take me a while to do enough to put in a book (but she has been doing it for three years so I have lots to choose from!) but I think it will be so fun to finally give it to her. Here is the cover:

And here are a few example pages:

So do you have a fun way to scrap quotes?

Changing Photo Spots on a Template

It’s no secret that I LOVE templates. After using and creating them for over seven years, I can still say with full confidence that they are a scrapper’s best friend!

One of the things that I love most about them is that they are just a starting point. A template’s design doesn’t lock you in. Rather, it gives you a place to jump off from.

In this seven-minute video I will show you one of my favorite tricks for altering a template: changing the size/shape of a photo spot. Although it’s an easy fix, those just getting started in digital scrapbooking might not know how easy it is.

How do you like to alter your templates?

Late to the Smartphone Party

I was one of the first. In December 2007, when they were still the newest thing imaginable, I bought an iPhone. The classic. The $400 phone whose screen broke within days of purchasing and whose screen was subsequently fixed for a mere $200 more.

I loved it. I loved having access to email while out of the house and I loved being able to take photos on the go. It was my prized possession.

And then, just six months later, we had an unexpected move overseas where smartphones were barely used and internet access only a dream in most places.

For more than four years, I was happy with my basic just-call-and-text phone. I didn’t need fancy. I needed to be able to call my husband and ask him when he was coming home and I needed to be able to text my friends to tell them the import store had Mac & Cheese. Priorities.

Even when we spent a year in the States, I was happy to be without a smart phone. I couldn’t stand watching people everywhere I went glued to their screen. I watched moms on the phone while at the park and husbands scanning their Facebook feed while on a date with their wives. While I love technology and all the benefits it brings, I often wondered how many relationships are hurt because of it. At home, the computer is always a lure. Did I really want something to lure me in when I was out of the house?

And then, just as we were headed back overseas, someone gave me their old smartphone. It was old — an original Galaxy. Although I wasn’t sure of my need and this Mac girl wasn’t sure about an Android product, I gratefully accepted the gift with the thought that it would at least save me $30 on buying a new call-and-text phone.

And now, six months into having a smartphone, here are my thoughts as it relates to memory keeping.

REASONS I LOVE HAVING A SMARTPHONE:

  • Although I do carry my big camera around a lot of places, there are times when being free of the bulk and still able to take photos is a pretty awesome thing. This is especially true on my morning walks and runs when I am greeted with amazing sunrises. I can’t really run with a dSLR slung over my shoulder.
  • Since I don’t often carry around a notebook and pen, many small and ordinary moments that make up my life get forgotten. With a smartphone, I can jot down funny stories and meaningful moments so that the memories won’t succumb to mommy brain.
  • I like that I can keep track of other things like workouts, shopping lists, and pictures of things in stores. They make a fun way to keep track of real life things to scrapbook.
  • I love, love, love having video. I don’t use it much, but when a precious moment opens up in front of me, I am ready.
  • I can be sly. Sometimes, you don’t want the world (or the subject of your photo) to know you are taking a picture. I like being able to take photos without being noticed.
  • Taking pictures of me with my kids. With my big camera, I can’t exactly hold it out and take a photo. But with my phone, I have captured lots of sweet moments with my children.

REASONS I HATE HAVING A SMARTPHONE:

  • This video sums it up nicely.
  • It’s hard to really feel like you are getting away when the emails still come in and the Facebook messages still ding. There is something amazing about being gone for the afternoon — or the week — and not have to worry about anything happening online. It’s a freedom most of us don’t know we crave.
  • Because I always have a camera on me when I go out, I have noticed that I am more likely to leave my good camera home. And while this can be a benefit, I have also found that I am not able to capture a moment like I would really like. Photography, for me, is a way of capturing what my heart sees and my phone really limits my abilities.
  • It’s hard to ignore. When I am out with my husband or kids and I hear that I have a new message or email, it’s really hard to just let it sit in my bag. And yet, I want to be truly present with my family. I can’t stand talking with people and having them pick up their phone and text while nodding and pretending to hear what I have to say. Why would I want to do it to my family?
  • Memories are stored in the heart, not on a phone. I wonder if I actually miss moments in my attempt to capture them.

So yea, I’m late to the smartphone party. And the jury is still out on how I feel about it.

What about you? How has having a smartphone helped or hurt your memory keeping?

GoPro

When we were getting ready to leave the States last summer, to return to our home in Asia, we were given a gift from some people who wanted us to get something for ourselves. With six children, it’s natural that all of our money gets spent on gifts for them while we pass each holiday with a, “Maybe next time” thought when it comes to gifts for ourselves. Our friends, however, wanted us to do something special with it. My husband and I agreed: a GoPro camera.

We had first seen these camera when a friend posted weekly recap videos from the summer camp where my husband and I met. We loved the fun and crazy videos they were able to take with a camera that has a 170° wide-angle lens, is shockproof, is waterproof to 197′ (60M), and is wearable and gear mountable. So fun!

Since buying ours, we see them everywhere! The kids love to be on the lookout for them in TV shows and in movies. They are often mounted to the hood of cars, on the front of motorcycles, or even on strollers.

The camera takes both still photos and video, which we love.

Here are a few still photos:

A few things to note:

  • After reading reviews, I decided to purchase the dive casing. You can use the regular casing underwater, but people had mixed reviews. Since we were leaving the States and wouldn’t be able to change our minds later, we just went ahead and got it.
  • The camera is small! The whole thing is about 2x3x1 inches!
  • This one caught me off guard: there is no viewfinder at all! You just hold it out there and click. With the 170° wide-angle lens, you tend to get what you are hoping for.
  • It is definitely not a video camera that can replace your regular camera. The audio is very quiet in some instances and very loud in others. But keep in mind that it was designed for sports and action (and therefore it doesn’t want to pick up every sound!)

We haven’t gotten to play around with it as much as we would have liked, but we have done we have had so much fun with. I can’t wait to test it out more. My husband and two older sons just got back from a trip to Legoland Themepark and Waterpark (in Malaysia) and had a blast with it.

Our first experiences with it were during our month-long stay in Cambodia. We took a lot of trips to the pool!

So what would you do with a GoPro camera?

A Lot Goes Into A Simple Page

After you’ve been a digital scrapbooker for a few years, you forget just how far you’ve come in terms of understanding the techniques and tricks of your scrapbooking software. Things become second nature and you no longer need certain tutorials or references to accomplish specific looks.

Let’s take a look at a simple page and break down some of the skills needed to put it together.

Making a Simple Page

The January 2014 Digi Files contain this amazing kit by Lauren Grier.

I started by choosing my favourite elements from the kit and placing them on a blank 12×12 canvas:

Then I began to play with the elements, seeing how they worked together. I clipped paper to shapes and duplicated layers to put together the beginning of a page:

Then I added some photos and journalling and started to look at the page critically to see what I wanted to keep and what needed to go.

Finally, I chose to add more journalling and simplify the embellishments. Here is the final page that I put together. It was a quick and easy page.

Supplies: Always by Lauren Grier, Journalers by Valorie Wibben, Grown-up Girl font by Darcy Baldwin

But, is the page so simple after all? Maybe “simple” in this case is a matter of perspective. To put this page together, I relied on these principles and techniques:

  • White Space: First, the page uses a neutral background and a liberal amount of white space. Making a simple page still requires quite a few design decisions.
  • Groups of Three: Visual groupings of three are pleasing to the eye and a popular design choice.
  • Black and White Photos: Black and white photos are timeless and the a great way to scrap photos when you don’t want the story to be lost.
  • Editing Photos in Lightroom: I edited the photos in Lightroom, using purchased presets.
  • Column Text: Using text in columns, similar to a magazine layout, breaks up large blocks of text into a more manageable size.
  • Paint: I clipped paint to the edge of a frame, for a messy look.
  • Text Size: After years of scrapbooking in 12×12 and then printing in 8×8 size, I know that font size 14 is the minimum size that I can read comfortably. A larger text size makes a big difference in how much I enjoy a final page.
  • Word Art Title: Titles are the hardest part of a page for me so I’m always grateful when there is good word art to use!
  • Kerning: See the word “imagination” is the bottom corner? I adjusted the kerning, which is the space between the letters, to give it a more airy look.
  • Clipped Paper: I “borrowed” the banner shapes from a journal card template and added them to my page, clipping paper to them.
  • Inner Shadow: I used an inner shadow on the pink butterfly to give it a “cut out” effect.
  • Drop Shadows: Let’s not forget the shadows! Learning how to shadow is an important step for all digital scrapbookers.

That’s a lot of things to consider on such a simple page! Luckily, there are so many great resources available to new digital scrapbookers, especially here at The Daily Digi.

Thanks for reading!
