Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers, listeners, members, and designers! We are so grateful for your support! It is because of YOU that we are able to do what we love to do each day here at The Daily Digi!
This post is a bit late due to some changes on the back end of our new site. So far, everything is going pretty well. I’m so excited with the new features on the back end and how they are making things easier for me. There are quite a few changes for members as well. All members will need to do a one time password reset and then should be good to go from there.
We released a very short new episode of The daily Digi Digest this week to wrap up November, so check it out if you haven’t!
Journal card by Digital Design Essentials. LD woodland font.
While we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet (it’s tomorrow!), December is just right around the corner and I’m thinking about the many moments I will want to capture. With a month full of memory making opportunities coming up, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes and plan ahead. Fortunately, we have a ton of great resources right here at The Daily Digi to make this easier!
Check the calendar for holidays:
- December 1st – First Sunday of Advent
- December 2nd – Cyber Monday

Check your personal events calendar:
Look for parties, events, birthdays, and even routine appointments. All of these will help you decide what December moments are most important to you to be captured. I still love Google calendar and rely on it to help me keep all of the schedules in my life straight!

Think outside the box:
We discussed many different ways to approach holiday memory keeping in episode 107 of The Digi Show. I bet you will find at least one tip or idea that helps you take the pressure off during this busy season!
Be sure to check out Anna Aspnes’ unique approach to December Daily. She challenged herself to tell the stories of the year in December. It’s a great idea!
Make a list:
Jot down the ideas you got from the lists and links above and keep it somewhere you will see it throughout the next month. I’m going to keep mine on my iPhone for easy access. Don’t worry about doing every single thing on the list, keep it more as an idea reminder and get ready to enjoy a magical month ahead!
As I am writing this, we’re only a few short weeks away from the new year. For memory-keepers, January 1st is often the time to start a new project. Are you planning on embarking on a big project for 2014?
Personally, I am going to continue with my pocket style scrapbook album. I am really happy with how it has turned out. Through this project, I have an amazing snapshot of a year in the life of our young family. I definitely want to keep going, but I have some decisions to make! With a year of experience under my belt, I want to keep what works for me and fine tune my approach going forward.
Specific Time Period or Free Form?
Last year I scrapped a double-page spread for every week of the year and my weeks ran Sunday-Saturday. I really liked ending on Saturday because it allowed me to spend Sunday scrapping the previous week. Logistically this timing worked for me so I think I will keep it up for 2014.
I’ve seen other people tackle pocket page projects in a more organic and free-form style, scrapping material as they have it. Still others incorporate their Project 365 (Photo-A-Day) into their pocket scrapbook albums.
I love that this album project can be whatever you want it to be!
Same Layout Style or Change It Up?
In 2013, I mostly used the style with two 6×4 landscape images on the top and bottom, with four vertical 3×4 images in the middle row. I am going to incorporate a few new grid layouts into my pocket album pages going forward, just to keep things interesting.
Supplies: All About the Cards No. 1 by Julianna Kneipp and Studio Basic, Mix n Match Journals bundle by Shawna Clingerman, Today’s the Day bundle by Sugarplum Paperie, Photo Block v2 by Libby Pritchett, The Things You Say by Kristin CB, Project Grids by Amy Martin, Photo Collages No. 1 by Designs by Lili
Same Kit or Switch Every Week?
For me, there is no question – I’m going to use different kits, cards and other products every week. Keeping it creatively interesting has helped me to be able to keep with the project for so long.
Here’s what I keep consistent from week to week:
- Placement of my title card.
- Using week numbers in addition to dates. (I started doing this mid-way through 2013 and it made it a lot easier to put the pages into order when I had the album printed.)
- Handwritten journaling font. (I use DJB JenLin by Darcy Baldwin)
Digital or Hybrid?
I’m 100% digital. Every now and then I think about going hybrid because I love the look, but realistically, I wouldn’t be able to maintain that over the course of a year.
Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Midnight Edition Becky Higgins’ Project Life, DJB JenLin font by Darcy Baldwin
Digital “Pockets” or None?
I started 2013 using digital pockets, but I thought they dulled the colours on my photos a bit. I solved that by erasing the centre portions of the pockets, to just leave the “seams” in place. Although I liked this look, I found that just using stitched grids worked best for me. The look is simple, but still separates each grid spot, which is how I prefer my pages.
Supplies: All About the Cards by Julianna Kneipp and Studio Basic, Today’s the Day by Sugarplum Paperie, Basically Edgy by Krystal Hartley, Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens
12×12 or 8×8?
I’m feeling a little lonely in this decision, but I do my pocket album in the 8 -inch by 8-inch size. It works for me because that’s the size the I scrap all my regular pages in and the albums fit on my bookshelf. The larger 12-inch by 12-inch size seems positively gigantic to me in comparison.
Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Midnight Edition Becky Higgins’ Project Life, DJB JenLin font by Darcy Baldwin
Rounded Corners or Square?
Now that’s a pretty controversial question! There are staunch supporters on both sides. But, I’m going to stick with the square corners for my pages.
Are you going to continue your project into 2014 or start one for the first time? With Black Friday and the holiday season sales just around the corner, now is a really great time to start planning a pocket style album for 2014. Happy scrapbooking!
Are you always looking for the perfect camera bag? I’m a bit of a bag addict and I have spent a few years trying to find the perfect way to carry my bulky DSLR camera. I’ve found a few great options that are really great.
I love these custom made camera bag inserts. Steph has talked about hers on The Digi Show and so I decided to order one for me and for my daughter last Christmas. They turn any bag into a camera bag or backpack. So useful!
Photojojo has a similar product that you can slip into any tote or backpack to get an instant camera bag. Great for travel!
Heddy uses a Lowepro SlingShot bag. She says “since my husband often carries the gear bag while I am shooting, I wanted something that he would be comfortable wearing. I like that the bag evenly distributes weight across the body and that it has room for my dSLR, external flash and a spare lens, as well as personal stuff (like keys and wallet). It has handy features like a rain cover, hidden pockets, size-adjustable gear dividers, easy access to the camera, memory card pockets, and external loops to carry a tripod. I’ve had the bag for a few years, use it often, and it is still like new. I’ve been very pleased with the quality of its construction.”
Epiphanie also makes some fabulous camera bags and they even have some for men. These are all nice choices because they don’t scream “I’m a camera bag!” – they just look like a nice purse or bag.
There’s no rule that your camera bag has to be an official “camera bag”. Just find a bag that works for you! Vicki uses a “Vera Bradley backpack. Love that it doesn’t look like a camera bag and I can wear it without it getting in my way.”
If you are looking for a gift idea for your favorite photographer, consider getting them a fun new bag for their camera!
Extracting a photo is a fun way to highlight it on your page and a great way to get rid of a cluttered, distracting background. In paper scrapping it’s like taking scissors and carefully cutting around the subject of a photo. In digital scrapbooking, we can create the same effect using the eraser to “cut” around the subject.
Here are a few examples:
There are many ways to extract a person from a photo and you can find a number of tutorials on YouTube (e.g. Gavin Hoey’s Photoshop video tutorials). However, if you use a simple photo editing program, there is a simple way. The first step is to crop your photo to include the area you want to work on. Next you can use the Magic Wand to select the background you want to erase. However, if the background blends in a bit with your subject, you’re going to have to resort to simply erasing. Don’t fear – this isn’t that hard. Using a large eraser, erase broadly around the photo. (Be sure to use an eraser with a hard edge, not a soft edge. The hard eraser will give you a more precise line or edge.)
If you’re lucky, you can use the Magic Eraser to erase parts of the photo. Be careful that the Magic Eraser doesn’t inadvertently erase parts of the photo you want to keep. (In this sample I couldn’t use the Magic Eraser because the background colors were too close to the subject’s skin color or clothing.)
Finally, using a small eraser with a hard edge, go around the subject carefully. This is the most time-consuming but most important part of the process. The more carefully and precisely you do it, the better it’ll look in the end. (You might be able to try using the Magic Eraser again as you get down to small areas like between fingers or around the subject’s hair.) Using the Shift key, you can speed up the process. Click and then holding the Shift key, click at the next location and the computer will draw the line for you. This works especially well in areas that are long and straight but it works well with circles and curves as long as you click at each turn. It will cut down on your time and make your edges more precise.
Once you’re happy with the results, save your image as a PNG. This will preserve the transparency of your background. If you save it as a JPEG, the background will turn white (or black, depending on your settings) and you’ll have to erase again.
The final step is to give your subject a shadow. Keep in mind which direction your want the light to come from and how dark and deep you want your shadow to be. Play around with it a bit until you like what you have. (When you give it a shadow, you may find little bits and pieces where you didn’t erase. The shadow will help these areas show up.)
Here is the original photo with the extracted photo:
Extracting photos may take a little time, but it’s a fun option to use especially if you want to highlight action or show off the subject without the distractions in the background.

Welcome back to The Digi Files Lynne-Marie! I’ve always enjoyed working with Lynne-Marie and was so excited when she contacted me and said she was coming back to designing and was ready to contribute to The Digi Files again! I love how Lynne-Marie designs products from her own scrapping needs and desires. I love the retro feel of Lynne-Marie’s designs from colors to the artwork included. So much great stuff in her store! Let’s take a closer look at “Tinsel” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Lynne-Marie is from Quebec, Canada, where she lives with her musician-husband and 3 growing boys ages 6, 8 and 12. She teaches English part-time at her sons’ school and also enjoys singing with her husband on various recording projects. She enjoys cycling and long walks in the woods.
I am very inspired by the clean, graphic look of magazine articles, though you will find lots of artsy-type layouts in my gallery as well! I created a set of magazine layout templates and this page was created using one of them. I love that the focus is more on the journaling and photo than the papers and elements used. The large orange circle emphasizes the sunset in the photo. This style of scrapping uses a lot of blending modes and the opacity bar to create overlapping shapes and colors. Great photo editing beforehand goes a long way too! 😉
I started passionately paper scrapping back in 2005. I was on creative teams, I taught classes, and I even sold some stuff for a stamping company. Then I started dabbling with Photoshop… and I was hooked! My scraproom collected dust as I courted my new love. I soon figured that I could create my own designs and decided to open my own shop with a friend of mine. We opened Zig Zag Scrap in 2007, and then I was accepted as a designer at CatScrap. I struggled through those years to create, manage a shop and be present for my family. It was a learning experience. I eventually left Zig Zag Scrap to another owner to focus only on designing, but sadly, in 2012, both Zig Zag Scrap and CatScrap closed. I retired, thinking my design career was over, but in January 2013 I was invited to guest at The Lilypad, which I am now proud to call my digi-home!
I am inspired by color palettes, Pinterest, fashion, magazines, art, photography… anything! I have too many ideas buzzing in my head and not enough time to get them onto the screen!
Computer: My computer is getting old… I’ll be in the market for a new one soon! Currently I am working with a 17″ MacBook Pro (2008) with 6 GB of RAM, and three 500GB EHDs for storage (SeaGate). I store everything on one EHD and backup to the other two (two complete backups). One backup is automatic and the other is manual. I only keep a copy of what I am currently working on in my computer.
Program: As for software, I use CS5.
Camera: Nikon D70… but I use my hubby’s iphone most of the time.
Anything Else: none
Go for a walk. I usually go for a long walk before I start on any project, be it scrapping or designing. I take the time before I start to mentally go over my theme and the focus of my kit or layout. When I get back I am refreshed and ready to get started!
I got this idea to create a workable template that offered many different options. I created sets of blocks that could be combined by turning layers on and off, resulting in a ton of different options for one single template! These are fabulous for creating photo albums or for a different take on pocket scrapping. This particular set is also a great option for calendar tops!
Here are some more inspirational layouts using Lynne-Marie’s products. All of the layouts are linked to the originals with credits.
Save 30% off Lynne-Marie’s entire store with code: TDDrocks, expires 11-30-13.
Go have a look in Lynne-Marie’s store! We will randomly select TWO winners to win $10 in product! All winners will be selected through the Rafflecopter widget below. There are several ways to enter and you can do ALL of them to gain more entries for yourself!
