Last Day of October 2013

It’s time to wrap up another month of The Digi Files! What an incredible collection of never-before-released products we’ve got this month!  ALL of them can be yours when you become a member!

When you become an annual member you get access to 12 months of products for the price of 11! That’s just barely over $6 a month for products with over $50 of retail value (OR less than $1 per full-sized product)! AMAZING DEAL!! No waiting for payments to process. You can start downloading your goodies as soon as the calendar changes to a new month! You can become a monthly member of The Digi Files for $7.50 a month.

It has been a fabulous month, filled with lots of fun too! Katie and I wrapped it all up in this episode of Daily Digi Digest released through the feeds earlier this week:

[jwplayer config=”Small” mediaid=”39659″]

This is what our members said at the end of last month:

“For me each month is like my birthday! I just love the Digi Files and the diverse products to try. I have been scrapping for over 5 years with Photoshop and yet still always find something new to learn.” – Krista(norton94)

“I’ve been a DigiGame month-to-month member for almost a year now and finally got around to switching to an annual membership. I can’t wait for each new month to see all the new goodies!” – AJ

“My membership here has to be the very best bang for the buck I have with digital scrapbooking supplies. Every month I get such a variety of scrapping supplies; I get introduced to new designers and reintroduced to some; and I can enjoy the Playbook. This month is no exception. Wonderful variety, great quality, new designers, and yummy new digital goodness.” – Valerie

Hello, I am so glad I became a member as I am loving the Digifiles! I do not get to scrap often so I look for great templates to help maximize my time. I really enjoy the templates you provide… the beautiful kits are great as well. :) I have told a few friends who are considering going digi about your site. Thank you for all you do! Have a great day! Cris

Finding Halloween Inspiration for Scrapping + Photography

finding Halloween inspiration

Digital Design Essentials So Spooky. Lobster font.

With Halloween just a day away, you are probably working on last minute preparations for costumes, treats, and/or parties. Don’t forget to prepare for the memory keeping part of the holiday as well! Make sure your cameras and phones are all charged up with enough free memory space for plenty of photos. This is also a great time to browse through some of our past posts to freshen up your photography skills and give you some ideas of what you want to capture this year. Here are some of our Halloween posts:

One of the best methods I have for getting in the Halloween spirit is looking through photos and layouts from past years. Here are a few of my favorites – all images are linked for credits.

We always go and see the witches at Gardner Village. So fun!

I love to take pictures of our porch decorations and also any neighbors houses that look festive.

For my daughter, Halloween is all about the costumes!

Our annual trips to a pumpkin patch are some of my favorite memories.

I always forget to take night pictures for Halloween, but I love having them for my pages. I’m going to go out and photograph some seasonal scenes at night this year!

Creating Flickr mosaics with Big Huge Labs is another favorite activity for me. I love finding such festive photos!

Of course, I love to look through the galleries and see what other digi scrappers are documenting. Here are some of my favorites from the Digital Scrapbook Inspiration and the Digital Pocket Scrapping Flickr groups. All images are linked for credits.

Some Favourite Fonts

image

Digital scrapbooking and fonts go together like bread and butter. The right font can take a page from “good” to “great”. Fonts can be used for journaling, title work, and even art on a page. It’s no wonder that many digi scrapbookers find themselves with hundreds and hundreds of fonts. But, there is always room for more! Here are a few favourite free and paid fonts:

Making journaling and filler cards with dingbats

use dingbat fonts

DJB Yep, That’s Life dingbat font. One Little Bird Designs Stargazer paper.

Dingbats are one of my favorite scrapbooking secret weapons and I’m always surprised that digi scrappers don’t use them more. As I’ve been doing more pocket scrapping, I’ve realized that dingbats are a great way to customize your own journaling and filler cards!

If you aren’t familiar with how to create your own cards for pocket style or Project Life scrapbooking, here are a few helpful resources:

To get started on dingbat decorated cards, either create a blank journaling card with a solid piece of paper for a background, or find a fairly plain card included in a digital kit or official Project Life download.

I created a simple journal card background using a paper from One Little Bird Designs Carson Park kit.

Journaling_Card_Carson Park paper

Then I used the KG heart doodles dingbat font (free download from dafont.com) to create my own customized card. I used the letter “P” to get the dingbat of XOXO and duplicated it two more times to create this card.

There are so many possibilities! Here are a few more to get your creativity going:

Digital Design Essentials Gnomey kit + Yep, that’s life by Darcy Baldwin (letter c)

DDE card

Shawna Clingerman Mister Awesome + DB Rock n Roll (letter h)

guitar card

Erica Zane See Jane Play + Yep, that’s life by Darcy Baldwin

Now I can have a unique and custom card to fit in with my own scrapbooking style any time I want one. All it takes is a few fun dingbat fonts!

The Daily Digi site is filled with information every day to help you with your digital scrapbooking and memory keeping activities. Besides the daily posts, there is an extensive tutorial section where you can find help on a number of digi-related topics such as:

Another great resource to turn to is the help section from the software company you use for your digital products. The majority of our readers use an Adobe program (Photoshop Elements & Photoshop being the most popular) and the Adobe help site is very useful. Here are some useful links:

Keeping it Simple with Photo Masks

Have you ever used a photo mask? It’s a great way to highlight a photo without overwhelming your page. It also allows you to play with blending so that you can overlap photos or place text over top of a photo. Many designers offer pre-made photos masks in their templates. They’re a cinch! And it’s a great way to learn how to use a photo mask without having to create one yourself.

Below is a sample of a template using a photo mask.

Here are some templates by Jennifer Lindsey, Lorilei Murphy of Studio Rosey Posey, and Anna Aspnes.

To use the photo mask on the template, all you have to do is click on the layer with the photo mask and add your photo. (If you use Photoshop Elements you can drag and drop your photo onto the template from the photo bin.)

Resize and line it up so that it looks like it’ll fit nicely. Then all you have to do is “clip” it to the layer (Cntrl/Command G to clip). Before you merge (Cntrl/Command E to merge), make sure you like how it looks and nudge the pictures until the edges look nice.

You can then play with blending a little by using the opacity sliding bar in your Layers Palette.

Look around the edges of the photo mask and using the soft eraser, you can blend the edges with your background paper.

Or you can simply use the photo mask just as the designer created it. It’s super easy and fun to use! It looks like I spent a lot of time creating this layout when it actually took me less than 10 minutes. Love that!

(Layout created using Artscape Aimee template by Lorilei Murphy and Start the Music kit by Julia Makotinsky, both featured at Scrapbookgraphics.)

layout
This is a very old layout but has to be one of my all-time favorites. I was using a telephoto lens at the time so my son didn’t realize I was snapping shots of him in the pool. I truly love that I was able to capture his joy and wanted to make the photo center stage.

DesignerLO

started
In late 2002 I got my first digital camera and wanted to create my own photo Christmas cards. I was searching the internet for decorative fonts and came across the Two Peas In Bucket site. I of course found tons of fonts and I also found a gallery with a handful of digital scrapbookers -something I had never heard of or seen before. I was hooked. I gave away all of Creative Memories supplies and started scrapbooking digitally. There were no digi stores at the time so we all had to create our own papers and elements. After digi scrapping/designing for a couple of years I opened my little shop in May of 2004 and have been designing ever since.

inspired
Right now, my inspiration is wanting to telling a story in a digital kit format. Does that make any sense? *lol* I am currently loving organic textures, textiles and bright colors.

tools
Computer: I am using Windows 7, AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor, 3.40 GHz, 16.0 GB RAM, HP 25″ LED Monitor
Program: Photoshop CS5
Illustrator CS2
Camera: Nikon D70 with a kit lens, 50mm and 70-300mm.
Anything Else: 6X11 Wacom Intuos 3
tipstricks
Automate. Create actions for your most performed tasks and also create your own keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. It will save you lots of time.

favorite
I love this kit because it reminds me of my high school years. It was inspired by the old desks, manual pencil sharpeners, sharpies, lockers and the loud class bell. It’s special to me because it takes me back to my school days.

DesFav
popular
I believe this kit is popular because everyone at some time has taken funny photo booth photos and want to scrap them. This collection was inspired by the old fashioned photo booths of the 1950’s. I wanted the colors to be bright and fun yet vintagy. The special appeal may be the quirky photo props that can be added to any photo.
